10,000 line up at Cowboys Stadium for ‘American Idol’ Auditions

American Idol auditions took place at Cowboys stadium in Arlington, TX today:

ARLINGTON à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ It’s a marriage made in heaven: The new Cowboys Stadium looks like a giant aquarium, and American Idol is the biggest whale in pop culture.

The power of that synergy was on display in the pre-dawn darkness Friday as a thick swath of people waited on the yet-to-be sunbaked sidewalk outside the stadium.

“We estimate the turnout at at least 10,000,” said Patrick Lynn, Idol’s supervising producer. “It’s way bigger than we expected, and I think that has a lot to do with being here and the excitement over the new stadium.”

Idol producer, Patrick Lynn says they’re looking for more than just good singers, “Originality, that’s what we’re looking for,” Lynn says. “I can’t really say what it is exactly, but you know it when you see it.”

“We’re looking for good singers, but we’re also trying to put together a really good show. So we want passion. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s bad, but that’s what we’re looking for,” says Lynn.

Dallas is the fourth stop of the Season 9 audition tour.   Check out the numbers:

  • Boston – 7,000
  • Atlanta – 10,000
  • Chicago – 12,000
  • Dallas – 10,000

Jason Castro’s brother Michael Castro, was supposedly auditioning today.   He made it to Hollywood last year, getting cut right before the mansion episode.   So far, no reports of sightings…

I did see on Michael Castro’s twitter that he was going to audition and then he said he’s not allowed to talk about it anymore good or bad.

  • holeighannie:

Hmm…I hope Michael made it through again! I really like his voice and I think he could be great, now that he’s got a year of performing and songwriting to his credit.

  • gingerly:

I hope that Michael Castro is better this season, because based on what I heard from him last season, he only made it through on being Jason’s brother. I didn’t hear anything good at all. I don’t think that he’d have even gotten to the judges based on his voice and his performance. He may this year…I’ve no clue. Don’t get me wrong, I love Jason Castro…I just don’t see that his brother figures into it.

In other news, I’m very happy that my City (Chicago) represents as being the city with the most auditions. Makes perfect sense to me.

  • SpenserJ:

Me either. I was a fan of Jason’s too. But, his brother didn’t appeal to me on any level. at all. I certainly don’t think his voice is good enough for a Top 36 or 24 spot.

  • Niall:

I’m iffy on the Castros, mostly because Betsy smells like a stage mom. She’s got her daughter in acting classes in Cali and I fully expect she’ll be trying out for AI 10 or 11, whenever she’s finally old enough. Besides which, Michael Castro is a dime a dozen as far as his talent level goes. I’m sure he’ll make it to at least Hollywood though just because his last name is Castro.

  • Tess:

Man…must be tough being related to an idol finalist.

  • liberty:

I hate to ask but how does the audition process work? the judges arent there? For some reason i thought the judges saw all 100,000 kids that audition…..they get paid enough to do so.

Best post, this. Yup, 80 bucks a head for Simon.

I’m not much a fan of Michael’s talent (he’s too nasally sounding for my tastes), but he’s been working on the singing thing for the past year whereas last year he had no experience, so I’d imagine he should be better. But I do agree he only got through last year due to the Castro name.

Meh on the stage mom thing. You can only be a stage mom IMO if you push your kids into things they don’t want to do. Jason seems to be doing exactly what he wants to do as does Michael. Both of them are adults.

That is Idolese for “I made it”…

  • brie200:

itsalleternal, Michael said that before the auditions.

It’s not the two adult kids I’m worried about. She’s got Jackie’s eyes full of stars and has been shoving her into the fanbase spotlight ever since Jason was on AI. Betsy definitely believes her baaaaabbbbby is gonna be a stah!

  • will:

I know I should do a search to verify this, but I could swear the initial reports on the turnout in Chicago put the figure much lower, with at least one article saying it was 4,000. Now it’s 12,000? Were the auditions spread over two days perhaps?

  • brie200:

I don’t buy it Niall, but I’m leaving it alone because Jackie has nothing to do with Idol. I just have a different opinion than you. Has Betsy always shown the best judgement? No. But then again people were insisting she was managing Jason and running his career and that has been proven untrue. Plus the boys have seemingly turned out just fine, so I give them the benefit of the doubt.

  • rockvixen:

I hope there are a ton of Adam impersonators for AI 9 because it would be fun to see a clip of them all during the auditions.

  • LindaT:

Rockvixen, I was just thinking the same thing! I wonder how many contestants, in the name of “originality”, have shown up with hair dyed black/blue, black nail polish, eyeliner and studded clothing? That would make a fun reel to show on an AI audition episode. :)

  • NatX:

I don’t profess to know the Castros, but I did follow Jason pretty closely on the show and kept tabs in the months following to see what the deal was with his post-Idol career. As far as I can tell, I don’t see anything that warrants putting the dreaded “stage mom” tag on Betsy Castro.

Do we actually know that she PUT Jackie in acting classes? Or did Jackie, after being around the celeb scene for a bit during Jason’s run on the show and being an impressionable ‘tween, decide à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’ get this à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬’  ON HER OWN that she wanted to do that? It’s not like a six year-old who already has four years of piano experience and has appeared on 13 different talent search shows and can’t have dinner until the six practice hours are over. And Jackie seemed to be all over some YouTube filming her and a friend doing some silly shit awhile back. Maybe she likes the camera? Not everything that happens is based on a crazy parent.

And hell, a lot of parents think their kids are going to be stars, and encourage them or give them whatever opportunities they can to succeed. That’s not being an overbearing stage parent, that’s being a parent. Not every parent is going to say “hell no! You get your ass back in that schoolhouse and go learn about chlorophyll and General Patton!”

    I can’t believe I’m even addressing this.

  • sillypraguer:

LOL at the Adam impersonator. He’s got the style down. I think it was Ellen who predicted lots of guyliner and nail polish in the AI 9 auditions. When she interviewed Adam on the phone.

  • gabam:

Lots of people were happy that AI came back to Dallas this year. I Love Michael’s voice and personality. I hope that he will be on AI Season 9. If he doesn’t make it, I’m sure that he will still be just fine. I like the original songs that I’ve heard that he’s written and co/written.

Both Jason and Michael were 20 years old before they decided to take a shot at becoming solo music artists. The family was surprised by both of them doing so because neither sung in public much before trying out for Idol. Does not seem like stage parenting to me. To me it seems that once the kids decided that they wanted to try the music business, everyone was supportive. Their grandfather, father, 5 uncles and lots of cousins also sing and play musical instruments yet they only started to sing in public when they were ready to do so.

Jackie loves to sing and make videos. She has older female cousins who act/sing in plays. She became interested and wanted to take acting classes during some of her free time during summer break. Not put in acting class, but requested to spend some time on summer break trying something new. Seems like a constructive use of time to me.

Too bad that lies are posted on the internet, believed, added to, and spread with such intensity. I think that family support is great when kids are trying to spread their wings. JMO.

  • Niall:

Jackie loves to sing and make videos

Yes, I know. She’s been famewhoring on the internet for quite awhile. she’s way too young to be so fixated on being famous and her family is just feeding into it. jackie Castro reminds me of Ali Lohan, desperate to be famous. I wonder how long before she moves to Cali and is just receiving “tutoring” wink wink.

  • gabam:

Wow. Did not see that hostile statement coming about a 13 year old. Wow.

My opinion is that she is a kid and is having fun and since she is talented, if she wants to go for it, she should. Since she is only 13 and not an Idol contestant, I will not continue with this. I’m out.

  • uncgirl:

I am surrounded by parents that sign their kids up to be a star at whatever activity their child does well at. I think this means you are interested in your child succeeding life. Why can’t a parent be invested in their children? I certainly am invested in my children.
I don’t think a person is considered a stage mom when the kids are over 18. The parents don’t have any legal rights after the child turns 18.

I have to say I was laughing at all the critics when Jason signed with Atlantic. It doesn’t mean he will make it big, but it does mean that he is headed in the right direction and if Betsy helped him get there, all the power to her!

Michael now knows some people in the music industry that have helped him out. I’m not really a fan of his music style, but if he wants to give it a try I wish him luck.
