Top 10 Girls

The Top 10 Girls - Recap baby!

Ten contestants, 90 minutes…this is killing me

Like last week, each contestant’s performance was preceded by a little video (coughfillercough) package.  This week’s theme was “Defining Idol Moments”–whatever that means. Katharine’s features her very best friend in the whole wide world…Kellie.  Yeah, right…sure, they don’t want to claw each others eyes out. Shots of them giggling, putting on makeup, and practically making out (yikes) on Katharine’s bed were–seriously–images I didn’t need in my head.  Thanks.

A picture named Katharine10Ga.jpegKatharine McPhee -  ”All In Love Is Fair”  Stevie Wonder - Not one of Katharine’s better performances, that’s for sure.  She overdoes the vocal runs generally, but tonight–ouch.  Not only were they overdone but really off.  It was like she was shooting at a target with a blindfold on, and missing every shot.  I don’t think this girl is commercial at all, and I can’t imagine what they’d do with her if she won the competition.  The judges weren’t enthusiastic–Simon was especially harsh, saying the “competition was more than just singing” and that her performance was forgettable.  She really needs to sing a contemporary pop song next to stay competitive.  But, despite the off night, she’s still a good bet for the Top 12.

A picture named Kinnik10Ga.jpeg

Kinnik Sky - “Here For The Party” by Gretchen Wilson -  Kinnik in a cowboy hat–that’s quite a sight.  Ok, that was different.  A raucous country song was not a good choice for her.  She’s got a great big voice, but she just didn’t convince me with that performance.  Unlike Paris or Mandisa, I don’t think Kinnik is very versatile.  She tried to turn it up a notch and really sell it, but the song fell flat.  Simon compared it to something he’d see at Disneyland.  I think Kinnik is in great danger of leaving the competition this week.

A picture named Lisa10Ga.jpegLisa Tucker - ”Who’s Loving You” by the Jackson 5 (originally Smokey Robinson and the Miracles) -  This is a great classic Motown song.  Lisa had pitch problems again tonight–worse than last week.  She had some really nice moments, though.  And still, a lot of poise–but I think she’s a little young for the song.  Simon made a good point when he said that she shouldn’t “come over as a very young girl singing grown up songs.” But he added, “You will sail through tonight.” And into the Top 12 as well, I believe.

A picture named Melissa10Ga.jpeg

Melissa McGhee - ”Why Haven’t I Heard From You” - Reba McEntire - Melissa is stepping it up!  That was hot. The only country song that kicked butt tonight.  She’s got a great, husky tone to her voice and a very attractive personality, despite what Simon says.  At least she seems real, rather than put on or laying it on thick.  I’m glad at least Randy and Paula gave her some props.  It’s gonna be tough, ’cause I don’t think the producers want her to advance.  Hence, Simon’s harping on Melissa’s lack of connection to the audience.  Never-mind that the audience has hardly had the chance to see her until now.  I hope Melissa lives to see another week–she deserves it.

A picture named Heather10Ga.jpegHeather Cox - ”Hero” by Mariah Carey -  I have to say, it cracks me up when Heather says that she’s a “stalker” of American Idol. And then proceeds to describe what it means.  Taping every show? Oh, that’s just the tip of the crazy, Heather…  Hee.  But,  her song choices are not so good.  Last week it was that horrible Idol song, and this week, it’s a Mariah Carey tune that’s just much too big for her.  She sounded pleasant enough, but when she went for the “glory note” it was simply anti-climatic, rather than thrilling.   A very lackluster performance.  All the judges agreed that singing Mariah is a dangerous thing–especially for a vocalist of lesser gifts.  Heather is in danger of leaving this week.

A picture named brenna10Ga.jpeg

Brenna Gethers - ”Last Dance” by Donna Summer -  Brenna seemed almost normal, and likable, in her pre-performance package.  Imagine that.  Too bad she was  off-key and that her voice lacked power and energy.  It’s amazing that a girl with so much “sass” offstage can be so dull and lifeless when she sings.  The producers have probably coached her to “talk back” to the judges, but it was pretty annoying.  She was so obviously sub-par, she just came off as stubborn and clueless when she argued back.  When she said she had “some people” who would vote for her, I laughed out loud.  Could she have been talking about the kids at “Vote for the Worst” who have chosen Brenna as their horse?  Har.  Simon actually said, “I think this may be the last we see of you after that.”  And that usually means goodbye–unless VFTW works overtime.

A picture named Paris10Ga.jpegParis Bennett - ”Wind Beneath My Wings” by Bette Midler - I adore Paris, but this was not a good song choice for her.  It was just a very meh performance.  The combination of those unique vocals and her cute personality are what make watching her work the stage such a joy.  “Hero” is so leaden and so serious and so boring, that the song came off as a throwaway.  Sure, she sounded great, but yawn. She should leave the mediocre songs to the mediocre singers like Heather Cox.  Paris should be singing the great songs, and nothing but.  She will, of course, advance this week.

A picture named Ayla10Ga.jpeg

Ayla Brown - ”I Want You to Need Me” by Celine Dion - Ok, who believes that Ayla never wore makeup?  Like, when she performs in front of people–which she has in the past–she’s never worn makeup?  Nah, I ain’t buyin’ that.  Makeup or no, she did a nice job with the song.  She’s a singer of modest gifts, like Heather.  But, unlike Heather,  she seems to know her limits and she makes the most of what she has.  It’s obvious that, like everything else in her life, she is working very very hard here.  Simon picked on her for being a little rote and mechanical.  He has a point, but I think she’s coming off a lot less bot-like than expected.  Ayla definitely stays and will make it to the Top 12.

A picture named Kellie10Ga.jpegKellie Pickler - “Let’s Give Them Something to Talk About” by Bonnie Raitt -  Ugh.  I hate the “little country girl” schtick Kellie lays on thicker than molasses.  Her voice really falls short.  I suppose it’s not anything that can’t be fixed with pro-tools.  And, that must be what the judges are thinking, because this week–they are still harping on her “likability” as if it’s the only thing that matters.  Yes, Kellie is going to need some major pro-tooling to fix those shouty, strained high notes.  But the truth is, the audience does love seem to love her.  Well, not me.  But the vast, American viewing audience–inexplicably yes.  She will move on, right into the Top 12.  Tell me again that this is a singing competition?

A picture named Mandisa12Ga.jpegMandisa - “Cry a Little” by Faith Hill - The other good country song tonight.  The practical joke she played on Ryan–telling him she had “dog jaw” and then snapping at his had like a puppy when he reached for her face–was cute.  If we’re talking likable here–I think Mandisa is the one–and geez, she can sing too.  Despite missing a few notes, Mandisa brought her big, big voice to this Faith Hill song and killed.   Unlike the judges, I thought it was a great song choice–proving once again that she can sing just about anything.  I love that she’s already hit rock and country, rather than sticking just to R&B.  Oh yeah, she headed straight for the Top 12.

Going this week:  Kinnik, Heather or Brenna.  Possibly Melissa.

More on Spoilers

HA HA.  Punked by a poster from the IdolonFox message boards! That entire spoiler list I posted right before the show was wrong.  For you West coasters, I  posted the real song selections in red next to the fake spoilers.    It was probably a fake list planted by a Fox operative… Hee.

Spoilers posted on message boards are often unreliable, I’ve found.

Just to clarify.  The spoilers I posted Sunday, Monday and earlier today came from sources that have been 100% accurate for me in the past.  What I posted earlier about the girls–the Ayla Brown spoiler and the bit of gossip about the judges not being happy with the girls (lots of country) performances and song selections–actually were accurate.  So, don’t go hatin’ on me, OK?  Just kidding.

I’ll probably continue to post message board spoilers, but with a giant caveat and asterisk to separate them from the spoilers that I get from more reliable sources.  Thank you….

Girls recap coming up soon….

More Gossip

I have no more actual song spoilers for the girls tonight, but I do have a little gossip about last night’s taping.

Apparently, the judges thought the girls picked bad songs, overall.  The judges weren’t happy with too many of the performances.  Even the favorites weren’t praised very highly.  Many of the song selections were country tunes.

ETA:  Here’s a list of songs for the girls that was originally posted at Idolonfox.  It’s made its way to Idol Forums and Survivor Sucks. And now my blog…  Thanks to the reader who emailed the list to me.

Supposedly, this list came from somebody’s friend who was at the taping:

ETAA:  Hi West Coasters?  These Spoilers?  Are Fake.  I’m adding the real selections in Red.  Song Spoilers found on message boards are often wrong.

Ayla Brown- “All By Myself” by Celine Dion (originally Eric Carmen of the Raspberries) -  actually sang ”I Want You to Need Me” by Celine Dion
Melissa McGhee- “Concrete Angel” by Martina McBride - actually sang  ”Why Haven’t I Heard From You” - Reba McIntyre

Kinik Sky- “Neither One of Us” by Gladys Knight actually sang “Here For The Party” by Gretchen Wilson
Katharine McPhee- “Wind Beneath My Wings” by Bette Midler actually sang “All Is Fair in Love”
Lisa Tucker- “When You Believe” duet by Whitney Houston and Mariah C - actually sang ”Who’s Loving You” Smokey Robinson and the Miracles (Jackson 5 Too)

Rumors

Big buzz on the message boards tonight.  Has Katharine McPhee left American Idol?  According to one of the hosts of the TV Guide Channel show,  Watercooler Talk, which aired last night, there is a RUMOR that Katharine HAS left the show.  I’m not sure exactly what was said–I didn’t see the show myself.  I only watch the TV Guide Channel if an Idol I really like is appearing on Kimberly Caldwell’s craptacular “Idol Chat” (GAH! Is she annoying, or what). Other than that? Errrrm, no….

This rumor–that Katharine McPhee has either quit, left, been DQ’d or whatever, from American Idol–hasn’t appeared in any of the usual places prior to tonight.  When Mario Vazquez quit the Top 12 last year, word had gotten around the internets at least a day in advance of the official announcement.  So far? Not a word, not a peep, not a sound.  My inbox? Empty, except for your questions.  The news outlets? Can’t find a thing. My opinion? If this rumor were true, there would be more buzz, more rumor, more innuendo than some passing reference by some ”host” on the TV Guide channel.

The girls taped their performance show tonight.  If Katharine were NOT in attendance, news would have leaked by now.  I’d venture to say this rumor is a big, fat dud. And maybe an attempt by the “hosts” of  “Watercooler Talk” to manufacture some of their own.  In the meantime, if I hear anything, I’ll post it here…

Oh look.  Taylor Hicks has actually performed “Easy” by the Commodores with his band.  If this is truly his song pick, I think he’s gonna do a fabulous job…

Speaking of the girls.  Like I said,  the girls taped their performance show tonight. I wonder how they did?  Please, drop me a line if you were there, or have some news.  I’d appreciate it, I really would.  Thank Yeewww.

Monday Morning Additions and Clarifications

Monday Morning Additions and Clarifications.

I have one more Spoiler to add to the list:

Bucky Covington - Garth Brooks, When the Thunder Rolls

I woke up this morning to a few questions in my email box.  I’ll try to clarify.  First, here is the list I posted last night:

  • Ayla Brown - a Celine Dion song
  • Will Makar - “Lady” -  by Lionel Richie
  • Ace - “If You’re Not the One” -  by Daniel Bedingfield
  • David Radford - “The Way You Look Tonight” - Standard, by Frank Sinatra and others,  recently done by Rod Stewart
  • Taylor Hicks - “Easy” -  by The Commodores, I believe

Will’s song “Lady”–Lionel Richie wrote the song “Lady” the Kenny Rogers hit. He recorded it in 1998.  The information you see posted regarding Will’s song choice is the information I was given.  Some of you are wondering if the song is Lionel’s hit “Once, Twice, Three Times a Lady”  I don’t think so, but I will attempt to get clarification on that.

Taylor’s song, ”Easy”–I posted, “by the Commodores, I believe.”  I’m not 100% sure on that, hence the “I believe” qualification tacked on the end. I’m working on clarifying that as well.  Also, I realize there was something completely different posted on the “Soul Patrol”, but in my experience, I’ve found spoilers posted on message boards to be wrong more often than not.

Thanks for playing! Hee.

Sunday Night Spoilers

Sunday Night Spoilers.

What songs will the kids be singing this week?  I do have a little inside information to share with ya all.  OK.  I know it ain’t much.  But it’s somethin’.  And I’m ever so grateful to my sources.  Thank You.

Nothing cast in stone, of course, but here’s what I got:

Ayla Brown is working on a Sarah MacLachlan song. Supposedly, she has approved a preliminary arrangement and has rehearsed it with the band.

Will Makar will be singing a ballad this week.  Nothing more specific on that, yet.

ETA:  Ok, I’ve received more information from a reliable source. Thank You.  Spoiling songs is difficult, because song selections ARE subject to change.  Ayla may have been rehearsing a Sarah McLachlan song, but for various reasons, her selection could have changed.  And I have more information on Will’s selection.  Again, nothing cast in stone, yada yada yada…

Ayla Brown - a Celine Dion song

Will Makar - “Lady” -  by Lionel Richie

Ace - “If You’re Not the One” -  by Daniel Bedingfield

David Radford - “The Way You Look Tonight” - Standard, by Frank Sinatra and others,  recently done by Rod Stewart

Taylor Hicks - “Easy” -  by The Commodores, I believe

Before They Were Idols

I thought it would be cool to feature music made by the Top 24 before they auditioned for Idol.  Some of these clips were emailed to me, left in my comments section, or found on message boards (particular thanks to the HH).

Here is an original tune performed by Bucky Covington posted on Bucky Covington Online.com

Jose “Sway” Penala’s fansite has an entire page devoted to Sway’s music and tunes recorded with his band, 6th Day.

Here is a song recorded by Paris Bennett.

From the CBS StarSearch Page, Lisa Tucker competing in Star Search - Junior Division when she was 13.

A snippet of Ace Young’s song on the “Little Vampire” soundtrack.

Music and more music from Chris Daughtry’s band, Absent Element

Taylor Hicks, who’s been gigging for 10 years, has a ton of stuff out there.  Here are four mp3s to down load: Georgia on My Mind (this is a gem, highly recommended), Heart and Soul, Hell of a Day and Soul Thing.  Also, mp3s Taylor’s college band recorded, posted by Taylor’s friend, Steven Jackson.

Ayla Brown’s fansite Ayla-Brown.org has posted  mp3s and video from a benefit she performed.

Will Makar’s band, Last Born.  And, a home video.

Any other Idol hidden gems out there? Either shoot me an email, or post in my comment section.  Thanks.

I’ve updated and added website links for Bucky Covington, Will Makar, David Radford and Taylor Hicks, here.  And I’ve re-written and added pictures to the guys’ performance recap from Wednesday.  I re-posted the guys’ recap here–with the girls’ recap posted right below.

News Roundup

News Roundup:

According to Carrie Underwood’s official website she’ll be appearing on this Thursday’s (March 2) results show to perform her hit, ”Jesus Take the Wheel.”

Here is an MTV interview with the four contestants who were eliminated Thursday night.

  • Becky O’Donohue insists the recently re-published Maxim photos from 2004 had nothing to do with her elimination.  She’s open to exploring opportunities in modeling and acting, but singing is her first love.
  • Stevie Scott mentions the fact that she was sick the night of her performance.
  • Patrick Hall thinks his song choice played a factor in his elimination.  Looking back, he feels it might have been wise to stick with what the audience saw at the audition (he sang “If” by Bread).  “Amazing Grace” was on his list of songs.
  • Bobby Bennett wants to pursue the Broadway stage.  He would love to perform in “The Music Man.”  After reviewing his performance of “Copacobana,” he realized it was a little over the top.

Here’s a fun, gossipy article about what idol life is like when the cameras stop rolling.  Let’s see…Melissa votes for herself on her cellphone…Kellie is getting (gasp) stuck up…Taylor (that scoundrel) likes milk with his steak!…Oh the horror….

Ratings news: According to Reuters:

“”Idol” won the time slot against tough competition from CBS’ “Survivor: Panama,” ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” and NBC’s Winter Olympics coverage of figure skating, skiing and snowboarding events, but the special Thursday results edition of “Idol” didn’t fly as high as the regular Tuesday and Wednesday editions of the show.

“Idol” topped out at 23.1 million viewers and 9.8 rating/24 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary estimates from Nielsen Media Research. In recent weeks, “Idol” in its regular time slots has topped the 30 million viewer mark. “Survivor” (14.9 million, 5.5/14) felt the heat of the extraordinary competition.”

Idol still won the time-slot Thursday, but was down by a significant number of ratings points compared to its regular Tuesday and Wednesday night shows.

Sidenote:  Thanks SO much to the folks who have been leaving links to articles, websites and everything and anything related to Idol and Idol contestants.  I read and keep track of  ALL the comments I get here.  Sunday, I plan on posting some of the cool links to pre-idol contestant material I’ve found here and around the net.  So please, idol fans, continue to post your cool links! :).

I especially appreciate the folks who point out my mistakes and set me straight when necessary.  You are all like the editor I need desperately, so please don’t stop. :).

BTW,  Anybody who knows any song spoilers? Please click the little yellow envelope and drop me an email. ;).  I would be forever in your debt.

ETA:  The Top 10 girls are taping on Monday, the Top 10 boys on Tuesday.

Top 24 Results

Gone from the competition tonight:

Bobby Bennett - Predictable.  He was the right person to go, and he knew it too.  Bobby–don’t choose songs for your grandma–choose songs that can advance you to the next round.  You might mull that one over back at your day job at Target.  But, maybe it didn’t matter.  I think contestants like Bobby are chosen only as fodder to be ripped apart by the judges–for the amusement of the masses, of course.

Patrick Hall - Predictable, unfortunately.  And the more I think about it, the more disappointed I am.  Some times one mistake, like choosing the wrong song, can be fatal.  That very first song in the Top 24 round is so important.  Now we’ll never get to hear Patrick sing a ballad.  Dang.

Stevie Scott - Predictable.  I’d heard rumors that Stevie wasn’t feeling well Tuesday night.  Despite that, she was way out of her league in the competition.

Becky O’Donohue - Unpredictable - She’s not a good singer, but I thought her beauty and sweet personality would keep her in the competition at least another week.  Coincidentally,  Becky and her twin sister Jessie did a photo shoot and web video for Maxim Online in 2004.  Extra did an “expose” of the story yesterday, with Simon Cowell’s girlfriend Teri “surprising” him with a screening of the web video.  The pictures have been floating around on the net since December–not much of an “expose”–and certainly the show’s producers were aware of them.  I don’t believe the rumors I’ve been hearing–that Becky was disqualified.

I have a subscription to the American Idol Magazine (yeah, I really do) and I just received the newest issue with Constantine Maroulis on the cover nice.  There are some real nice photos and an article about him on the inside.  Also, there’s a feature on the Hollywood rounds and profiles on each of the Top 44 contestants–which is nice, since there were several who got no screen time.  The issue’s a little on the thin side though–only 64 pages–20 of those pages make up a semi-final round “score card.”  Play along at home, ya’ll.

Worth sharing from the magazine–AI5 Schedule for the rest of the season:

Top 12 Guys

Expanded Recap - Top 12 Guys

This is a revised verion of the re-cap I posted on Tuesday.  I added some pictures, ’cause pictures are cool.

A picture named Patrick12Ba.jpgPatrick Hall - “Come To My Window” Melissa Etheridge - I keep hearing Melissa in my head.  His performance was forgettable — Patrick doesn’t have the power to carry this song off.  In Hollywood, he sang “If” and his singing was so beautiful, he actually made me like that drippy Bread song for the first time.  I would love to hear him sing more ballads.  *He could be in trouble, but the judges were kind, and Patrick is likable–so he may live another week.  *Patrick was eliminated this week.

A picture named David12Ga.jpg

David Radford - “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” Queen - David’s voice has a nice tone–there is potential there–but he’s yet to come into his own. David has the cutest dimpled smile–which may keep him in the competition even though his vocals are sub-par.  He could knock someone out of the running for the Top 12 who is vocally more worthy. David wasn’t good, but Randy’s comments were harsh.  UGH–I have no interest in watching teen-aged boys cry, and David looked close to tears.  Just more evidence that the age limit should be raised to 18.

A picture named Bucky12Ba.jpgBucky Covington - “Simple Man” Lynyrd Skynyrd - Bucky has a raspy rock voice that he pushed too hard–maybe it was nerves. His voice sounded really rough and he had trouble staying on pitch.  Paula mentioned his “nice tone” and maybe next week we’ll hear something a little softer–possibly a country rock tune?  Bucky’s southern charm and hot looks will keep him in the competition, for at least another week.  If he steps it up, he could be a dark horse to make it into the Top 12

A picture named Will12ba.jpg

Will Makar - “I Want You Back” Jackson 5 - Damn, I have a weakness for these 70’s throwbacks.  And this song is one of my favorite guilty pleasures.   I love this kid–great voice and a performance that seemed effortless. Easily the best of all the teen boy singers. If he doesn’t make the Top 12 something is very, very wrong.  The teen likability factor will keep him competitive this week, even with Simon’s lukewarm comments.

A picture named Sway12ba.jpgSway - “Reasons” Earth Wind and Fire - Listening to Randy and Paula praise Sway’s performance, I thought I’d entered some alternate universe. I thought my eardrums were going to explode, he hit so many bad notes.  His transition from falsetto was NOT good, despite what Randy and Paula said–it was terrible.  At least Simon had some sense when he said it was a “really pimpy 3rd rate copy of Earth, Wind and Fire.”  Even though he doesn’t deserve to, expect Sway to advance this week.

A picture named Chris12ba.jpg

Chris Daughtry - “Wanted Dead or Alive” Bon Jovi - Not crazy about this song, but Chris performed it well.  Chris does not have a fantastic voice, but he makes the most of what he has.  He’s able to connect emotionally with whatever song he sings. Positive comments, especially from Simon–means that Chris will have no trouble advancing this week.  He’s a good bet for the Top 12.

A picture named Kevin12ba.jpgKevin Covais - “One Last Cry” Brian McKnight - He started out a little shaky, and was pitchy, but he had his moments.  Even the goatie vibrato was less prominent.  But still–between the goat and the lisp, I find his vocals unpleasant.  Kevin certainly has a lot of spunk, but that’s no reason to keep this kid advancing.  Randy/Paula’s compliments cast Kevin as the sweetest kid ever–then Simon, the meanie, enters to tear him down.  Outraged viewers will vote to keep him in.  Kevin will live to see another week.

A picture named gedeon12ba.jpg

Gedeon McKinny - “Shout”  There is something really…off…about Gedeon’s personality.  He speaks with a really pronounced, stilted, enunciation, like he’s preaching or addressing a crowd of people.  I think Gedeon is going to have a hard time connecting to the audience.  Even though he picked a perfect song for his talents and did a great job–*he’s a good bet for elimination this week.  *Gedeon is safe this week.

A picture named elliott12ba.jpgElliott Yamin - “If You Really Love Me” Stevie Wonder - Elliott’s vocals are warm and soulful.  Who knew talent like his could be found in karaoke culture?  He’s been unpimped–until now.  When Simon said he was potentially the best male vocalist,  he seemed to be casting Elliott as “the rough diamond” who will grow throughout the competition.   The high praise received from all three judges means he will advance. With the judges obviously in his corner, Elliott has an excellent chance of making it to the Top 12.

A picture named bobby12ba.jpg

Bobby Bennett - “Copacobana” Barry Manilow - WTF? What is this guy doing in the competition? His rough, crazy performance of this song was completely out of place and just plain bizarre.  The Top 24 is where the competition gets serious, isn’t it?  Or is this just an attempt by the producers to bring what makes the audition rounds so popular (horrible singers) into the competition? Is he just fodder for Simon’s barbs? *All I can say is–bye Bobby, it was nice barely knowing ya.  *Bobby was eliminated this week.

A picture named ace12ba.jpgAce Young - “Father Figure” George Michael - I’ve been critical of Ace and I still don’t think he’s a great singer.  And while I usually find his facial expressions and the way he works the camera cloying and hammy, somehow his style worked perfectly for his song choice.  Simon was right–brilliant song choice.  Best performance from Ace, yet.  He’s not only a sure bet for the Top 12–I think he could win this thing.

A picture named taylor12ba.jpg

Taylor Hicks - Elton John “Levon” - I have no idea what Taylor meant when he said “Levon” possesses “Family Values”–once I parsed through Taupin’s opaque lyrics, I found the song’s message hardly uplifting.  But nevertheless–he  chose a great, classic pop song to sing, toned down the twitchiness, and sounded great on top of it.  The judges, including Simon raved.  I think Taylor will be sticking around, all the way into the Top 12.

Recap - Top 12 Ladies.

With Pictures!

A picture named Mandisa12Gb.jpg

Mandisa chose a rock song, “Never” originally by Heart.  She’s one of the best singers out of the 12 girls.  She delivers a song with confidence and her vocals are strong.  She’s a big, beautiful girl with a ton of style who commands the stage–there’s nothing tentative about her.  She definitely “tricked” out some Heart, just like she promised.  The judges were unanimous in their praise.   Mandisa is a good bet for the final 12.

Kellie Pickler sang “How Far” - originally by Martina McBride.  Her vocals were average–she has a tendency to go sharp and shout on the high notes.  The judges mentioned  this in passing, but their comments mostly revolved around her ”likability” rather than her singing.  Simon said that she had a “potentially” good voice. This is key–Kellie has been cast as the sad little girl with big dreams. She’ll spend the rest of the series overcoming adversity and realizing her “potential.”  When she performs in the final two (my prediction), the tears will never stop.  Don’t expect her to go anywhere soon.

A picture named Becky12Gc.jpg

Becky O’Donohue performed the great rock classic,  ”Because the Night - Originally by the Patti Smith Group, covered by 10,000 Maniacs. Both Randy and Simon said Becky’s vocals were better than they expected.  The judges put her in the Top 24–shouldn’t they expect her to sing well?  After all, these are the best singers they could find, right?   Maybe not.  Randy came right out and said that a great-looking girl like Becky didn’t need to have great vocals, and indeed her vocals were not good.  Becky is a sweet, beautiful girl–but she should not advance to the Top 12.

A picture named Ayla12Gb.jpg

Ayla Brown’s privilege and background will keep her from achieving the underdog status necessary to win this thing, but don’t count her out.  She’s excelled in competitive sports and comes from a family of achievers.  The girl definitely had her game face on as she performed “Reflection” - originally by Christina Aguilara. It was an ambitious choice that paid off.  She had a few problems with the high notes, but other than that, it was a good performance.  And like Simon said, she didn’t sound “robotic.”  Ayla has a good chance to make the Top 12.

A picture named Paris12Gc.jpg

Could Paris Bennett be any cuter?  When she speaks with that little squeak of a voice, who could imagine how mature her sound is when she performs?  She sang “Midnight Train to Georgia” - originally by Gladys Knight and the Pips.  It was a perfect song choice for her–she does sound a little like Gladys without being derivative.  While, I think her dancing inhibited her vocals a bit, she still sang like an old pro.  After she makes the Top 12, she’ll definitely place in the Top 5.

A picture named StevieScott12Gb.jpg

Stevie Scott has trained in opera since she was 11 years old.  She performed “To Where You Are” - originally by Josh Groban without any of the power one would expect from an opera singer.  She has a unique style for sure–but her style is very niche and not really suited to Idol.  She hasn’t developed the confidence yet to compete in such an intense environment.  Her vocals were weak and pitchy and she seemed way in over her head.  She does haven an interesting, ethereal quality to her voice though.  In a different setting, she might do really well–just not the Top 12.

A picture named Brenna12Ga.jpg

Brenna Gethers is a lot of things–but boring?   Only when she sings.  Brenna spends the whole time off stage mugging for the camera, and personally, I’d rather see her personality when she performs.  But maybe that’s just me.  Her performance of ”You Are the Sunshine of My Life” - originally by Stevie Wonder was pretty lackluster.  The judges called her on it.  Simon said,  ”You’re like a wild little cat, and someone’s put gloves on you.”  At this rate, I don’t see her lasting much longer.

A picture named Heather12Ga.jpg

Heather Cox laid an egg with “When You Tell Me That You Love Me”.   It’s an odd song choice to begin with–it debuted on AI4 as a group number.  Later in the season,  Vonzell Solomon  performed it.  Heather was flat pretty much through the entire song.  Randy mentioned that she had laryngitis during Hollywood, but advanced anyway, because they “remembered all of her performances.”  Other than Hollywood, wouldn’t that be just one performance?  Her initial audition?  He said he expected her to “slay”–but why?–since he’s barely heard her sing.  Needless to say, she did not “slay” here, and unless she’s got something we haven’t seen yet, she’s not going to advance much further.

A picture named Melissa12Ga.jpg

Poor, unpimped Melissa McGhee got to finally strut her stuff on the Idol stage.  She performed  ” When The Lights Go Down” originally by Faith Hill in a husky vocal suited to country or pop.  She didn’t quite knock it out of the park, unfortunately, but if she gets more time and manages a “wow” performance, she may be able to advance.  When Simon told  her she was unmemorable, she told him in the nicest way possible that tonight was the first time that America heard her sing.  For that reason alone, I hope she gets to stick around for at least a little while longer.

A picture named Lisa12Ga.jpg

Lisa Tucker performed “I’m Changing” - originally by Jennifer Holiday like the young pro that she is.  She’s got some pitch problems, but other than that a lovely voice that’s refreshingly uncluttered with vocal runs.  Plus, she’s got an incredible smile that lights up her face.  Nothing surprising from the judges–they raved.  I see Lisa taking her talent very far in this competition.

A picture named Kinnik12Ga.jpg

Kinnik Sky’s performance of  ”Get Here” - Originally by Oleta Adams was powerful and really didn’t deserve the criticism she got from the judges.  Yes, there were a few off notes–but no more than Lisa Tucker, who’s vocal problems were barely mentioned.  Simon said, “It was a very cabaret performance that we’ve heard a million times across American Idol,” which is one of his pat critiques used primarily to reverse-pimp a contestant.  He compared her unfavorably to the younger contestants and it was almost as if he were telling her she was over the hill.  Really, I think this was the most unfair critique of the night.  They appear to be holding Kinnik back in order to make sure the young talent–Lisa and Paris–advance.

A picture named Katharine12Ga.jpg

Katharine McPhee closes the show in the pimp spot.  She performs “Since I Fell For You” - an old standard.  She knows the Barbra Streisand version.  Katharine is a singer who really knows how to move on stage and work the camera.  And she’s expert at selling a song in 1:30.  This was definitely her best performance yet, but  I’m still not convinced she’s a very versatile singer.  And it’s hard to imagine her as a pop singer–which is what Idol manufactures.  But so far, the judges are in love with her.  She’s definitely headed to the Top 12.

Notes on the Top 12 Guys

The Sway song spoiler was WRONG.  I hate when that happens–I apologize. I’ll do better, I promise.

In the meantime, some notes on the guy’s performances tonight.  I’ll have some caps and more comments later.  Look for the girls recap soon:

Patrick Hall - “Come To My Window” Melissa Etheridge - I keep hearing Melissa in my head.  His performance was forgettable –Patrick doesn’t have the power to carry this song off.  He could be in trouble, but the judges were kind, and Patrick is likable–so he may live another week.

David Radford - “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” Queen - David has the cutest dimpled smile–which may keep him in the competition even though his vocals are sub-par.  David could knock someone out of the running for the Top 12 who is vocally more worthy. David wasn’t good, but Randy’s comments were harsh. David looked close to tears.

Bucky Covington - “Simple Man” Lynyrd Skynyrd - Bucky has a raspy rock voice that he pushed too hard–maybe it was nerves. He had trouble staying on pitch. His southern charm and hot looks will keep him in the competition, at least this week.

Will Makar - “I Want You Back” Jackson 5 - Damn, I have a weakness for these 70’s throwbacks. I love this kid–great voice and a performance that seemed effortless. If he doesn’t make the Top 12 something is very, very wrong.  The teen likability factor will keep him competitive this week, even with Simon’s lukewarm comments.

Sway - “Reasons” Earth Wind and Fire - Listening to Randy and Paula praise Sway’s performance, I thought I’d entered some alternate universe. I thought my eardrums were going to explode, he hit so many bad notes. It was terrible.  Even though he doesn’t deserve to, expect Sway to advance this week.

Chris Daughtry - “Wanted Dead or Alive” Bon Jovi - Not crazy about this song, but Chris performed it well. Positive comments, especially from Simon–means that Chris will have no trouble advancing this week.

Kevin Covais - “One Last Cry” Brian McKnight - He started out a little shaky, and was pitchy, but he had his moments tonight.   Randy/Paula’s compliments cast Kevin as the sweetest kid ever–then that meanie Simon came in to tear him down.  Everybody will vote to keep the poor kid in. It’s a very effective technique.  Kevin will live to see another week.

Gedeon McKinny - “Shout” There is something really…off…about Gedeon’s personality.  He speaks with a pronounced enunciation, like he’s preaching or talking to a crowd of people.  Its really off-putting. Even though he picked a perfect song for his talents and did a great job–he’s a good bet for elimination this week.

Elliott Yamin - “If You Really Love Me” Stevie Wonder - Elliott has the blue-eyed soul thing going on.  He’s been unpimped–until now.  When Simon said he was potentially the best male vocalist,  he seemed to be casting Elliott as “the rough diamond” who will grow throughout the competition.   The high praise received from all three judges means he will advance.

Bobby Bennett - “Copacobana” Barry Manilow - WTF? What is this guy doing in the competition? His rough, crazy performance of this song was completely out of place and just plain bizarre. All I can say is–bye Bobby, it was nice barely knowing ya.

Ace Young - “Father Figure” George Michael - I’ve been critical of Ace and I still don’t think he’s a great singer.  But he picked a perfect song for his personality and talents. Ace will be moving on, without question.

Taylor Hicks - Elton John “Levon” - Taylor chose a great, classic pop song to sing, toned down the twitchiness, and sounded great on top of it.  The judges, including Simon raved.  I think Taylor will be sticking around. Yay.

Who could go on Thursday:  Patrick, Gedeon or Bobby.

Here it is…

A Guide to the Guys!

A picture named BobbyBennettTop24.jpg

Bobby Bennett, 19, Denver, CO. Aud–Denver.

Bobby is one of the unpimped.  Like Melissa McGhee, we’ve yet to hear him sing.  In fact, his appearance in the chair and his reaction afterward were really our first real glimpses of him.  And that’s a shame because Bobby comes across as funny, and extremely likeable.  Bobby has been singing since he was 7.  Before auditioning for Idol, Bobby worked at Target.

A picture named KevinCovaisTop24.jpg

Kevin Covais, 16, Levittown, NY. Aud–Boston.

It’s kind of awful, but every time I look at Kevin I think of little Eggbert from the Foghorn Leghorn cartoons.  Kevin sang Josh Groban’s “You Lift Me Up” for his audition. Paula said he was an unlikely Idol, but that it didn’t hurt Clay Aiken.  Simon observed that, “Folks over 80 would love you…nobody under 20 would understand you.”  Kevin’s biggest competition will be the other teen boys.  Both David Radford with his teen idol good looks, and the vocally talented Will Makar will be tough competition for Kevin, whose warbley tenor may not have broad appeal. A picture named BuckyCovingtonTop24.jpg

Bucky Covington, 28, Rockingham, NC. Aud–Greensboro.

Despite the fact that we’ve seen or heard little from Bucky, he appears to have a growing fan base.  His good looks and the hint of southern charm is intriguing to many.  Bucky picked up a guitar at age 19 and has played in various country and rock bands.  Bucky’s twin brother Rocky also auditioned in Greensboro, but did not advance. Bucky needs to perform memorably right out of the box if he’s going to stay in the game. Bucky Covington.net Bucky Covington Online.com Covingtons crew.com

A picture named ChrisDaughtryTop24.jpg

Chris Daughtry, 26, McLeansville, NC. Aud–Denver.

Chris sang “The Letter” for his audition, and his gritty vocal style impressed the judges.  In Hollywood he proved he could bring heartfelt emotion to a song, whether the classic Cat Stevens tune, ”First Cut is the Deepest” or the banal Barry Gibb tune, “Emotions.”  Prior to Idol, Chris was a member of the band “Absent Element” and recorded a CD with them.

Patrick Hall, 27 Gravette, AR Aud–Las Vegas.

Who is Patrick Hall? A question many were asking after Paula singled him out in an MTV article as a contestant the girls would fall in love with.  We finally heard him sing during the Hollywood rounds where he managed to make the cheesy song “If” completely swoon-worthy.

A picture named TaylorHicksTop24.jpg

Taylor Hicks, 29, Birmingham, AL. Aud–Las Vegas.

Old man Taylor.  Ok, he’s really only 29, but that head of gray hair and world-weary look makes him seem mature beyond his years.  Taylor is probably the most experienced of this bunch, having performed his soulful blues in and around the Birmingham area for the past 10 years. When he auditioned in front of the judges, Simon balked. Taylor is a gifted vocalist, but will his un-idolesque appearance and quirky mannerisms be embraced by the viewers?  I hope so. A picture named WillMakarTop24.jpg

Will Makar, 16, The Woodlands, TX. Aud–Austin.

Will performed for two presidents–Clinton and Bush–while a member of the Houston Children’s Chorus.  His performance of “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” for his audition had Randy and Simon were ready to send him to Hollywood. But Paula thought he needed a few more years to mature.  She may have a point–competing on national television on a highly rated TV show is a lot of pressure for an inexperienced teen.  Still, Will is easily the most talented of all the teen boys.  He has a natural style that’s never forced or self-conscious.  His talent could take him far into this competition. A picture named GedeonMcKinnyTop24.jpg

Gedeon McKinny, 17 Memphis, TN. Aud–Chicago.

We first heard Gedeon when he over-sang “Let’s Stay Together” during the a Capella rounds in Hollywood. He over-sold himself in “The Chair” when he told the judges that he’s “climbing the stairway to success and ready for America to see what God has done.” (?)  Simon said  if Gedeon had said that first, he might have said no.  It remains to be seen if he has the goods to back up his big–confidenceGedeon McKinney Online

A picture named SWAYTop24.jpg

SWAY, 28, South San Francisco. Aud–San Francisco.

Will Jose “Sway” Penala have the Filipino-American voting bloc behind him  the way Jasmine Trias 3rd place AI3 did?  Some are predicting yes.  He performed “Superstar” for the judges who enthusiastically advanced him to the next round.  When Sway auditioned for idol, he was a member of the group 6th Day whose existing record contract,  when discovered, raised some  eyebrows.  Supposedly, performers with existing contracts are ineligible for Idol.  Sway didn’t perform well during the Hollywood rounds.  He’ll need to step it up in order to compete with this talented group of guys. A picture named DavidRadfordTop24.jpg

David Radford, 17, Crystal Lake, IL. Aud–Chicago.

David sings in a crooning style reminiscent of John Stevens from Season 3.  David has talent, but has yet to develop an original style.  David performed the rat-pack classic “The Summer Wind” for his audition. Paula and Randy were reluctant to let him through, but after some coaxing from Simon, they relented.  David needs to dial the mannerisms back a bit and relax.  But it may not matter. His megawatt smile insures that the girls will be voting their fingers off for him.  Rad Pack.org Rad Pack Idolshow.com David Radford Forum

A picture named ElliottYaminTop24.jpg

Elliott Yamin, 27, Richmond, VA.  Aud–Boston.

Elliott is a high-school dropout (really) whose singing experience has been mostly in karaoke bars.  The first time we saw him, he was pwning Terrell Brittenum during their group sing in the Hollywood rounds.  Elliott’s impressive R&B vocals weren’t showcased nearly enough during the auditions. He’s just one more contestant who will have an uphill battle overcoming a lack of all-important screen time. Elliott Yamin Yahoo Group

A picture named AceYoungTop24.jpg

Ace Young, 25, Denver, CO.  Aud–Denver.

Buzz around Ace started early.  Along with Patrick Hall, Paula singled Ace out for heartthrob status.  He starred as himself in an episode of “Half and Half,” opened up for New Edition and has a single on the “Little Vampire” soundtrack.  He sang Westlife’s “Swear It All Over Again” for his audition.  Randy said he was one of the best singers in the competition.  Simon disagreed.  Though Ace is pretty and has tons of potential as a teen idol, his vocals are breathy and lack power.  Nevertheless, he’s had tons of screen-time and appears to be one of the pimped ones.  I can totally see an Ace-Kellie final two…  Ace Young.org Ace Young.net Ace Young Fans.com Ace Young Forum Totally Ace

Your Top 12 Girls

Here’s a run-down of the Top 12 Girls.  The Top 12 guys are coming up tomorrow.

A picture named ParisBennettTop24.jpg

Paris Bennett, 17, Fayetteville, GA.  Aud–Greensboro.

Paris is the Granddaughter of Ann Nesby who was the lead singer for the grammy award winning Sounds of Blackness.  A tiny girl with a mighty voice, Paris is only 17 years old, but she sings like an old soul.  Paris blew the judges away when she performed “Cowboy Take Me Away” by the Dixie Chicks and “Take Five” by Billie Holliday for her audition.  She chose two songs from completely different genres and managed to nail them both.  The early buzz seems to be all about Paris. Paris-Bennett.org Paris-bennett.com  Darling Paris.com

A picture named AylaBrownTop24.jpg

Ayla Brown, 17, Wrentham, MA.  Aud–Boston.

Dubbed the All-American girl by Idol producers, Ayla is a star basketball player at the private high school she attends and has a full scholarship to play at Boston College this fall.  She sang “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” for her audition.  Her mom is Gail Huff, reporter for Boston’s WCVB-TV and her dad is MA state Sen. Scott Brown, R-Wrentham.  Her biggest challange is to overcome her image as the privileged girl who never seems to break a sweat, allowing the average viewer to identify with her. So far, Simon has dubbed her “robotic.” Ayla-brown.org  Ayla Brown Online

A picture named HeatherCoxTop24.jpg

Heather Cox, 22, Jonesville, NC.  Aud–Denver.

We haven’t seen much of Heather since her audition in Denver where she performed Josh Groban’s “You Raise Me Up.” Word is she had laryngitis all through the Hollywood rounds, which is probably why we didn’t hear or see much of her.  Heather grew up singing in her father’s church, where he’s the pastor.  He sang tenor for the Blackwood Brothers, a legendary gospel group.   Heather Online

A picture named BrennaGethersTop24.jpg

Brenna Gethers, 25, Mt. Vernon, NY.  Aud–Boston.

Brenna has a degree in sociology from Brandies University and a black belt in Shotokan karate.  Cast in this series as the girl-you-love-to-hate, or maybe just the girl you plain hate, Brenna’s vocal skills (what little we’ve heard) appear to be secondary to her ability to bring drama and conflict to the show.  And at least she knows it, as she said to Simon when she heard she made the cut “Let’s go, lets do it, let’s make good TV.”  Bling, bling and shine on, girl.  I couldn’t find a fan site for her!

A picture named MandisaTop24.jpg

Mandisa, 29,  Antioch, TN.  Aud–Chicago.

Mandisa is a gospel singer and worship leader.  She performed with the Fisk University Jubilee singers while she was a student there and has performed with Shania Twain, Trisha Yearwood, Take 6, Larnelle Harris and others. She performed Alicia Keys “Falling” for her audition and got three enthusiastic yes votes from the judges.  Simon made a crack about her weight after she left the room, but they kissed and made up when Mandisa made the final cut.  Mandisa Forum

A picture named KinnikSkyTop24.jpg

Kinnik Sky, 28, Duluth, GA.  Aud–Greensboro.

Viewers were introduced to Kinnik during the Hollywood group rounds where she performed with Tyra Schwartz, Celeste Scalone and Nicole Turk for the judges.  Kinnik has been singing since the age of four and has worked as a professional actress at various theaters.  Her challange now is to overcome the serious lack of screen time she’s had so far. Melissa McGhee, 21, Tampa, FL.  Aud–Denver.

Melissa has been singing since she was four years old.  She also loves to dance and loves working with children.  She’s had virtually no screen time since the season began.  Viewers will hear Melissa perform for the first time when the semi-final rounds begin this week. She needs to perform memorably in order to stay in the game.

Katharine McPhee, 21, Sherman Oaks, CA. Aud-San Francisco.

Katharine performed “God Bless the Child” for her audition.  Randy was blown away, but Simon was not completely sold, (”parts of that song were very good,” he said) but still impressed.  Her mom, Peisha is a singer and vocal coach.  Katharine has performed in a few local LA theater productions. She attended Boston Conservatory for one semester majoring in musical theater.  Katharine-Mcphee.net   Katharinefans.com  Katharine-Mcphee.org

Kellie Pickler, 19, Albemarle, NC. Aud–Greensboro.

Kellie has a compelling back-story that’s been featured prominently on the show. She was raised by her grandparents after her mom left.  Her dad, a drug addict, has been in and out of prison. She competed in “Gimme the Mike–Charlotte” and in some local and state pageants. She sang “Since U Been Gone” and “Broken Wing” for the judges.   Simon said she over-sang the songs, but all three judges sent her on to the next round.  She has a vocal style very similar to last year’s winner Carrie Underwood. Currently, Stevie is a freshman studying music at Cal State Univ-Sacramento.    Also a victim of a serious lack of screen time, Stevie is another contestant who needs to make a big impression the first time out to stay in the competition.  Stevie Scott Online

Lisa Tucker, 16, Anaheim, CA. Aud–Denver.

Lisa was the original “Young Nala” in Disney’s LA production of “The Lion King.”  At 13, she competed in the Star Search Junior Division. She also was a two-time winner on Ed McMahon’s TV show, “Next Big Star.” For her audition, she sang Whitney Huston’s “One Moment in Time,” in a clear, beautifully controlled voice that Simon said was “the best 16 year old we’ve ever had throughout this whole competition.”  Lisa’s experience and poise could help ensure she sticks around for awhile.  Lisa Fans.com

Spoilers - Top 12 Guys

The Top 12 guys taped their episode last night, and I’m hearing very little information about the show.  However, I do know that Bucky Covington sang  “Simple Man,” originally by Lynyrd Skynyrd.  I’ll post more information as I find it…

ETA:  I have a sliver information regarding the judges comments on Bucky’s performance:  One of the judges (not sure which at this time) said that his overall his performance was good but that he needed to clean it up a bit–maybe a little too grunge for the song he sang.

I’m hearing via the boards that the audience last night got a big ole lecture from the producers about leaking information from the performances.  Last night’s taping was filled with mostly VIPs–studio executives and family members.

Song Spoilers - Top 12 Girls

The AI Season 5 launch party was last night.  Check out the pictures at Getty Images and Wire ImagesConstantine Maroulis performed there last night, and I have an update via my homeboard (thanks gr) via Constantine message boards.

Constantine performed “My Funny Valentine,” “Hard to Handle,”  ”Want Someone Badly,” (Jeff Buckley tune) “Down to the Nightclub,” (Tower of Power) an original tune called either “I Came to Thank You” or ”Thank You,” and “I Think I Love You.”  Prior year Idols in attendance:  Justin Guarini and Jon Peter Lewis.  More news will be forthcoming as I find it.   eta: a couple of edits necessary to add and edit song names…thanks con fans.

Song Spoilers for the girls have shown up on a few message boards.  These appear credible to me, so I’m going to post them:

These come via Television Without Pity and Live Daily via a poster a Idol Forums who attended the taping:

  • Mandisa - “Never” originally by Heart.  Mandisa was first.  Randy said, ” Wow wow wow..what a way to start off the show..that was hot!”  Simon said it wasn’t a “perfect vocal..particularly in the middle.” but to expect her in the final rounds.
  • Stevie Scott - “To Where You Are” - originally by Josh Groban. Simon said ” I think you completely and utterly messed that up”.
  • Paris Bennett - “Midnight Train to Georgia” - originally by Gladys Knight and the Pips.  Paula said she reminded her of Fantasia. Simon said she ” had the likeability factor. It’s not about being good, it’s about being great…and that was great!”
  • Lisa Tucker - “I’m Changing” - originally by Jennifer Holiday.  Simon said “she made the girls who are 5 or 6 years older than her look ordinary.”
  • Kellie Pickler - “How Far” - originally by Martina McBride.  Simon said she started off better than she ended it. (she was very nervous)  but said she has the “likeability factor” and that her song “was important to be heartfelt and it WAS heartfelt–it felt sincere–and that’s what we’ve always liked about you” also she ”potentially has a very good voice” and  he “thought she did very very well.”  Sounds to me like she was fair-to-middlin’ but Simon praised her anyway. Can you say PIMP? I knew you could…
  • Heather Cox - “When You Tell Me That You Love Me” - Crappy group Idol song from last year. Simon said she played it safe.  He said, ” No one will remember that performance.”
  • Becky O’Donohue - Because the Night - originally by Patti Smith. (and co-written with Bruce Springstein who once said he wouldn’t let Idol use his songs) The judges thought she did well–better than they imagined.  Simon thought she was just OK and that “quite good” isn’t good enough. unless you are kellie pickler….
  • Ayla Brown - “Reflection” - originally by Christina Aguilara. Randy was pleasantly surprised. Simon thinks she’s a “hard worker” but that the song revealed her vocal limitations. But, for the first time, he saw some emotion in her.
  • Brenna Gethers - “You are the Sunshine of My Life” - originally by Stevie Wonder. Randy thought it was a safe performance and that she needs to stick to her “attitude”–that’s why people like her. Simon thought she did horribly.  He compared her to a “wild cat that was forced into wearing gloves.” And apparently, Brenna was constantly mugging for the camera.
  • Kinnik - “Get Here” - Originally by Oleta Adams. Had the next to the last spot (I’m not sure of the others, these aren’t in order except where noted). Randy said she was sharp in the middle. Paula said despite the few pitch parts, she’s a classy woman regardless. Simon said, ” we’ve seen 1 or 2 quite stunning performances from very young girls who we got really excited about–and with somebody like you, who’s 28 years old, very elegant, very real–it was a very cabaret performance and we’ve heard this a million times across American Idol. Not once did I sit here and think–wow, where did this girl come from?”
  • Katharine McPhee - “Since I Fell For You”  *I believe this was originally by Lenny Welch.  Katharine had the “Pimp Spot” at the end of the night. Simon said there were 4 really good performances, and that hers was the  best.

*I did some research–”Since I Fell For You” has been recorded many, many, times starting with Buddy Johnson and his Orchestra, with vocals by the great Ella Fitzgerald, in 1947.  Buddy Johnson also wrote the song.

Poor Melissa McGhee.  I’m sure she sang last night, but I can’t find any spoilers that mention her!  She’s doomed…

ETA:  Finally found some info on Melissa’s song, from Idol Forums (poster there did a real nice job recapping the performances):

  • Melissa McGhee - ” When The Lights Go Down” originally by Faith Hill.  Randy thought she started off a little shaky with pitch problems but pulled it through in the end–he thought it was just alright. Simon said, ”before your performance tonight, I just never would have remembered you for whatever reason.”  Melissa said that he didn’t remember her because she never got air time.  He said, “Apart from that, I think you’ve been overshadowed by some of the bigger personalities…that may be your problem, because I think you actually sang that better than a lot of the other girls tonight”  And also, ” You’re sort of lifeless…and that worries me…..but you sang it well.”

The guys tape tonight.  Spoilers so far for the guys:

  • According to a source, Bucky Covington will be singing either the Elvis tune “Suspicious Minds” or Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Simple Man.
  • According to Taylor Hicks’s brother, Taylor will be performing Elton John’s “Levon”
  • Sway is rumored to be singing “On Bended Knee” by Boyz 2 Men.

Sidenote:

Some ratings news.  So far, Idol is pwning the Olympics.  From an AP wire story via ABCnews.com:

“The winter Olympics proved no match for television’s gold-medal winner, “American Idol.” Fox’s phenomenally successful contest crushed the Olympics in head-to-head competition on Tuesday night, 27 million viewers to 16.1 million, according to Nielsen Media Research. The Olympics recovered a bit after “Idol” went off the air, but its overall audience of 18.6 million was the least-watched winter Olympics telecast since Nagano’s closing ceremonies in 1998, Nielsen said.”

The overall ratings for the Olympics have been running well below the 2002 Salt Lake City games in viewership, according to the article.
