Happy Kellie Pickler Day!

Happy Kellie Pickler Day!

Kellie Pickler is the first kid off the Season 5 block to release an album.  And her brand-spankin new CD, “Small Town Girl” drops TODAY!  You can pick it up retail, or download it off one of the various online music sites around the net.

Kellie Pickler 2.0

Reading back through my archives reminds me of how so very much I hated Kellie Pickler during the competition.  Ok, hate is really too strong a word.  But, basically, I wanted her off my Tee Vee, like, NOW.  I couldn’t believe this girl of few vocal gifts was getting by on a sob story and a ”personality”.  A personality that seemed to be completely contrived and not at all amusing.  “What’s a ballsey?” indeed…

But, something has happened in the months since her elimination at 6th place.  Kellie no longer irritates me.  I still think she’s limited vocally.  And on tour, she was stiff and awkward on stage–something she’s going to have to work on before she tours to promote her new album.  But now, I find her kind of charming and find myself actually rooting for her.  Her new album is well produced and full of, yep–personality.  Except, now I’m thinking that’s not such a bad thing.

How did my attitude evolve? My feelings began to change almost immediately after she was eliminated. When Kellie did her post-boot interviews, she made no excuses for her bad performances–she appeared plucky and unaffected rather than whiny and fake.  Her skits with Wolfgang Puck on the Idol finale actually made me laugh.  Later, on the talk-show circuit, I found myself cracking a smile at a few of her “kellieisms”.  Only a few days after having her wisdom teeth pulled, she still managed to suit up and show up to perform on tour.  Later, when she missed a few shows due to vocal problems, she made an appearance on stage to wave to her fans–sweet.  She appears upbeat and level-headed in interviews.  And absolutely NOT dumb.

Sincere, bright and grounded–is this post-idol Kellie the real Kellie?  Does it matter?  For me, the two-faces-of-Kellie is yet more proof that the tight little box the contestants are shoved into during the competition allows them to reveal only a sliver of who they really are. Like any ”reality” show, American Idol offers little in the way of reality.  It’s television–drama–soap opera.  Once a contestant is off the show and no longer playing a character created for them by the Powers That Be, we are often introduced to a different person altogether.

Have I learned anything? No. I realize I’m possibly still being manipulated. And I just don’t care.    Furthermore, I have big plans to get sucked into the manufactured melodrama that is American Idol again next year. Yep. I’m hopeless.

But in the meantime–Kellie! You Go Girl!  Hee.

What’s Up With Elliott

What’s Up With Elliott

Micheal Slezak who writes the Popwatch blog for EW.com, posted a little piece about Elliott Yamin today.  No news to report at this time–just a question.  When is this guy going to get a record contract?  We all want to know the answer to that one.

Slezak also posts links to You Tube videos of Elliott and the Little Memphis Blues Orchestra performing  ”Use Me,” “Little Ghetto Boy,” “I Believe to My Soul,” and “Whipping Post,” at the Virginia state fair last month.  I’ve seen them. They’re good.  Definitely worth a look.

And speaking of LiMBO, the former Taylor Hicks Band, Shirley Kennedy of the National Ledger posts Part 1 of her interview with LiMBO hereBrian Less (keyboards), Jeff Lopez (horns), Sam Gunderson (guitar), and Zippy (drums) talk at length about how the band came together.  Good stuff.

Bits and Pieces

Bits and Pieces

Check out Gray Charles for another Taylor Hicks update.  Taylor continues to work on his upcoming album–75% of the basic tracks are complete, and they are beginning to mix some of the songs.  Are you looking forward to seeing Taylor in concert?  He’ll start a 3 month tour in February and plans to “play lots of different size towns, even smaller ones.”   Hopefully, that’s going to be a town near you.

And seriously, is dropping the F-bomb in a song that big of a deal?  I mean really…

Bucky Covington and his wife are moving to Nashville today.  I hear he plans to go straight into the studio to record some tunes.  Good luck Bucky!

According to this blurb posted on puretonemusic.com, Chris Daughtry has finished his self-titled album “Daughtry”.  The site lists the song titles.  A couple of tunes will be exclusive downloads only, so completists will have to shop around:

Here are all 12 confirmed song titles (in sequence): It’s Not Over, Used To, Home, Over You, Crashed, Feels Like Tonight, What I Want (featuring Slash), Breakdown, Gone, There And Back Again, All These Lives, and What About Now. The song, “Sorry” will be exclusive to iTunes and the newly recorded acoustic versions of “Home” and “Crashed” will be exclusive to WalMart.

This USAToday article reports that Katharine McPhee performed “I Have Nothing” at the Carousel of Hope Ball in Beverly Hills last night, to a standing ovation led by none other than Whitney Huston, who recorded the song originally.  You might remember that Katharine’s Top 6 performance of this song during the competition was roundly criticized by the judges.  The viewing audience, however, disagreed and voted her into the Top 2.  Simon Cowell apologized to her on that week’s results show.

Whitney is in the midst of a comeback, led by none other than her mentor, Clive Davis, who also oversees production of the Idols’ records.  The new kid in town happens to sing a Whitney tune.  Whitney happens to be in the audience. The new kid and the old kid happen to meet afterward. The cameras happen to capture the moment.  Clive lurks in the background, twiddles his fingers Montgomery Burns style and murmurs ”Excellent”. Heh.

Clay Aiken is set to guest star as himself on the ABC soap Days of Our Lives in December. He’ll sing ”Everything I Have” off his latest album, A Thousand Different Ways–part of a “private concert” for Days‘ Steve and Kayla (Stephen Nichols and Mary Beth Evans).  Clay’s version of “O, Holy Night” will also be featured in the episode, which airs Dec. 22.

Clay will embark on a 16-date holiday concert tour during December, accompanied by a live orchestra.  Last year’s holiday tour included an ambitious “story” written by Clay, about a little boy who “discovers the true meaning of Christmas”.  This year Clay?  Just sing.  Thanks a bunch.

A few Idols have records dropping tomorrow.  Of course, Kellie Pickler’s album, “Small Town Girl”, will be in stores Tuesday.  Also, Fantasia Barrino’s single “Hood Boy” is being released to radio.  Her album is set to drop December 12. You can listen to a stream at her MySpace.  And, Season 5 semi-finalist Patrick Hall releases his single “One For the Ages” tomorrow.  The album “One For the Ages” will be available February 2007.

Upcoming Appearances

Upcoming Appearances

Carrie Underwood will appear on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Monday October 30 and The Ellen DeGeneres Show Wednesday November 1 to sing her current hit, “Before He Cheats”

Constantine Maroulis is playing an 11 pm show at the Cutting Room in NYC Tuesday, Oct 31.  Tickets are $30

Kellie Pickler is scheduled to appear on the Today Show, Wednesday, November 1, The View, Thursday November 2 and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Friday, November 3.

Clay Aiken guests on the Megan Mullally Show Thursday November 2.

Paris Bennett will perform for the The Journey to the Ends of the Earth Begins benefit for the Children’s Cancer Research FundThe concert is at 6 pm Saturday November 4 in Milwaukee, WI.  Tickets are $500-$250. There is more information at Children’s Cancer.org.

And finally, Jon Peter Lewis and his band play Crash Mansion Saturday, November 4 at 6 pm in NYC.  The show is part of the CMJ Music Festival.  He will also participate in a panel discussion earlier in the day, which is unfortunately, only for CMJ registrants:

The American Idol Effect: A&R and Marketing in a World of Overnight Sensations: A no-holds-barred discussion of how reality shows like ..American Idol.. affect artist development and record-company marketing. The panelists also take a look at how artists on reality shows and TV talent competitions deal with stereotypes, public backlash, and perceptions about how long their careers will last.

The CMJ Music festival is a way for unsigned bands to network with college radio stations and music professionals.  Like American Idol, it’s an avenue–albeit more traditional and credworthy–for  unknown artists to break into the music business.

I’d love to go to the panel, but CMJ registration is $500.  So, no, I won’t be there.  I will, however, be at the Crash Mansion show on Saturday.

Bits and Pieces

Bits and Pieces

Rehearsals.com just posted another Taylor Hicks video.  Taylor really lets loose on “Hollywood Night’s”.  Definitely my favorite from the trio of videos posted so far.

Last week,  Taylor Hicks and Limbo performed for the New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Cabaret 2006 Benefit in NYC last week.  Gray Charles has the set list and some details via horn player, Jeff Lopez, here.  The set list: ”Whats Going On”, “Hell of a Day”, “What I’d Say” and “Whipping Post.” They closed the show with “New York State of Mind” More pictures at What’s up VIP.

Brenna Gethers,  Season 5 semi-finalist with an attitude (remember her?) has a new gig.  She’s now the lead singer for the funk-rock group Bomb Squad.  The band was hand-picked by Dick Clark to perform at the 31st Annual American Music Awards.

Kellie Pickler’s “Small Town Girl” Set to Release this Tuesday

Kellie Pickler’s “Small Town Girl” Set to Release this Tuesday

Want to preview Kellie Pickler’s new album? You can listen to the entire CD here on her CMT home page .

I gave it a listen this morning. I’ll say up front, I’m not a fan of country music, but I was pleasantly surprised.  The CD is filled with catchy pop/country tunes.  I particularly like the jangly guitars on “Red High Heels”, although her vocals are over processed.

The songs, 5 of which Kellie co-wrote, highlight her backstory–that of a plucky girl with a hardscrabble upbringing who perseveres and eventually prevails.  The songs are mostly upbeat country confections, positive in a you-go-girl kinda way.  I won’t be surprised if ”Small Town Girl” does very well in the  pop/country market.

Kellie appeared on the “Grand Ole’ Opry” last night.  According to this article she sang her single “Red High Heels” and “My Angel” which is dedicated to her grandmother.  Keep checking the WSM 650 AM archives for a broadcast of the show–WSM will rebroadcast her performance tonight, 9-9:30 pm Central time.

The CD was produced by Blake Chancey, who previously worked with the Dixie Chicks.

Kellie is scheduled to appear on the Today Show, Wednesday, November 1, The View, Thursday November 2 and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Friday, November 3.  Check your local listings for times and stations.

thanks kirsten

Just in Case You Were Wondering

Just in Case You Were Wondering

An item posted yesterday at MTV.com news had Idol fans scratching their heads:

In an unexpected twist, this year’s “American Idol” third-place finisher, Elliott Yamin, is touring with Little Memphis Blues Orchestra, Taylor Hicks’ former band. LMBO followed Hicks on the American Idols Live Tour this summer and began playing with Yamin in the process.

LiMBO backed Elliott when he played the Virginia state fair a few weeks ago, but are they actually hitting the road together?  Jeff Lopez, LiMBO horn player, speaks to the matter in this post on the official AI message boards:

With the AI finale only a month behind us we have spent this time coming up for air…to meet as a band and consider our future…we have played post gigs with Elliott Yamin (Tacoma Concert Series Coming Home Concert) in Richmond and just this week a private gig in New York with Taylor…both were amazing…

We are going to continue to work with both Elliott and Taylor as opportunities present themselves… but it is important to note that right now we are not “officially” on tour with either artist…(we are pretty sure mtv.com was referring to the fact that we played with Elliott in Richmond and it was pretty cool to see our name there) E & T are coming up for air as well and determining their path…figuring out their future…

Stay tuned…

Katharine McPhee - Upcoming Appearances

Katharine McPhee - Upcoming Appearances

Katharine McPhee has been very tight-lipped about her upcoming album.  All we know at this point is that she’s working with several producers (including hip-hop producer Nate Hills) and that she’s currently very busy recording in the studio.  At this point, fans can only speculate about the direction she’ll take on her upcoming album.

Chris Daughtry Debuts New Single

Chris Daughtry Debuts New Single

Update - Preview clips from Chris’s new CD here.  The CD is self-titled–check out the cover here.  I just listened–this stuff is hook-laden, radio-ready pop-rock.  I think DAUGHTRY will not only sell many CDs but get plenty of airplay on Hot AC radio stations across the country.

Big Chris Daughtry news this morning.  DAUGHTRY’S new single will be “It’s Not Over”.  It’s an upbeat, pop/rock number and was clearly a fan favorite when the reviews came in the morning after DAUGHTRY’s Viper gig in LA a few weeks ago.

Chris made the announcement this morning on The Bob and Showgram morning show out of Raleigh-Duram NC.  The broadcast was streamed, so fans all over the country heard him play an acoustic version of the song.  At the end of the interview, the studio version of the song was played on the radio for the very first time.

Chris has said that once the single was picked, it would be released to radio in a few days. So, watch out for that…
