Katharine McPhee’s Spin Cycle

Katharine McPhee’s Spin Cycle

Katharine McPhee’s team wasted no time “explaining” why her debut CD has been pushed back from December 19 to January 30.  In this MTV.com interview posted today, we’re introduced to a confident, self-possessed Katharine who’s fully in charge of her career:
A picture named Katharine1a.jpg
“In fact, when McPhee’s record label announced plans to include her signature song from “Idol” on her upcoming debut album, the singer replied, “No you’re not.” “That doesn’t go with the record at all,” she told MTV News recently.

During her “Idol” run, McHaters implied McPhee’s greatest downfall was overconfidence, but her strong sense of self is also her greatest strength as the 22-year-old Los Angeles native sets out to transition that fame into a career.

“The one thing you learn about ‘Idol’ is that you have to be really tough,” McPhee explained. “You learn how to be a powerful businesswoman right away, and I have gotten really strong about what I want and what I don’t. And, for me, it’s fun because it’s me against all the guys.”

What McPhee doesn’t want is to be rushed. While debut “Idol” albums are typically released at the end of the same year as the finalists’ “Idol” season and subsequent tour, she’s been vocal about pushing her LP to 2007. A release date has yet to be confirmed for her debut.”

Ok peeps. There’s no way Kat is calling the shots on her release date. No Idol has ever had that kind of clout with the label. Note the lack of an explanation for why the CD was pushed back in her remarks.  It wouldn’t be very cool to admit that she’s behind schedule or what she’s got in the can so far is unsatisfactory. Why else would her release date be moved from the lucrative holiday buying season to the barren wasteland that is retail in January–and two weeks into the new season of AI6 to boot?  Not buying it.

About the record:

So now we’ve been building the songs like how you would if you were making a record if you weren’t on ‘Idol’ and you would take five months. It’s been a cool creative experience for me. I’m really a songwriter and I’m learning from the best people in the business.”

Those people include Babyface and songwriter Kara DioGuardi (Kelly Clarkson, Hilary Duff), as well as less predictable names like Chad Hugo of the Neptunes and Timbaland’s production partner, Nate “Danjahandz” Hills, who worked on Justin Timberlake’s “My Love” and Nelly Furtado’s “Promiscuous.”

McPhee has yet to finalize the track list, but potentials include “Somehow,” produced by Ryan Leslie (Cassie’s “Me & U”), the DioGuardi-penned power ballad “Home” and “We Got Each Other,” a mid-tempo number that reminds McPhee of Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together.” “Neglected,” which McPhee co-wrote, is also a likely keeper, as is the girls’ anthem “Open Toes.” “It might be the new ‘Thong Song,’ ” she said, laughing.

Hmmm, so it looks like “Open Toes” is a keeper.  Alrighty then.  Her producers are definitely aiming for the teen market.  While the decision to go “current” will likely disappoint the fans who came to know and love the standards and adult R&B she performed on Idol, I’m betting they’re aiming for an audience beyond her Idol fanbase.  All Idols need to reach non-idol fans in order to sustain long-lasting careers.  But alienating your core audience to maybe reach a new audience is pretty risky.

What else I’m not buying–this image of an over-confident Kat–the young woman who knows exactly who she is artistically.  During the season, her performances were nervous and uneven. When she found a couple of songs that worked for her (”Over the Rainbow” and “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree”) she clung to them for dear life.  If she’s really a “current” R&B girl at heart, I don’t understand why “nerves” kept her from gettin’ down with her real bad self.  My spidey-sense tells me she’s a young woman who has yet to develop a clear artistic sensibility.  Right now, she seems to be going with the flow.

I mean, seriously, would a woman with a clear artistic vision make this statement?

“If I don’t have a hit record then I’ll try the record thing again and try the movie thing. And then [if those don’t work] I’ll just get knocked up and be a happy married woman.”

Right.

I don’t have a good feeling about this.  But hey, I’ve been wrong before.  Maybe there’s some brilliant strategy at work here–some smart, out-of-the-box thinking that will become clearer when Kat sells a boatload of albums come January 30th…

Katharine McPhee’s CD Release Date Pushed to January ‘07

Late Breaking News…

Katharine McPhee’s CD Release Date Pushed to January ‘07

Third time’s the charm?  According to Katharine McPhee’s official website, her album release date has been pushed back from December 19, to January 30, 2007.  Originally set to drop on November 14, the date moved to November 28, then to December 5, and then again to December 19–before being moved into the New Year.

Yikes.

No official word on why the album has been pushed back. Katharine was still recording vocals on Monday November 20th, according to this interview–making a December 19th release doubtful, as it takes several weeks to complete mixing, post-production and manufacturing once the vocals are completed.

Of course, as some have speculated in comments, perhaps Clive Davis, the man who ultimately green-lights the Idol albums, heard a rough cut and ordered a do-over.  Ruben Studdard, for instance, was sent back to the studio to re-record tracks for his debut album by an unsatisfied Davis.

Or perhaps, The Powers That Be weren’t satisfied with the response to the 3 songs that were leaked to promosquad two weeks ago.  The hip-hop R&B vibe of a song like “Open Toes” may not have pleased some of her fans–particularly adults who enjoyed her performances of standards and adult R&B on Idol.

One thing is for certain, pushing the release date to January means no holiday sales for Katharine.  And by the time her record drops, AI6’s new crop of Idols will be capturing the viewing public’s attention.  Will folks beyond Kat’s core fanbase stop to notice her new album?

All I can say is that in order to ensure decent sales, the publicity push for Katharine’s album will have to be very aggressive.  For Katharine’s sake, I hope come January, her label is willing to put forth the effort.

Season 6 SPOILER Update - Tuesday Edition

Season 6 SPOILER Update - Tuesday Edition

When we last left off, I posted an item about contestant Sabriena Stone successful advancement to the Hollywood Rounds.  A friendly commenter came by to tell us that, alas, Sabriena did NOT make it to the next level.  Rumor has it that she did not make it past group day.

Oh, and that hot blonde haired chick featured in the AI6 commercials singing for the judges? She was in one of the rooms that got cut on the last night…

Also, of the 10 girls who got called back in the middle of the night after getting cut (see yesterday’s post here.  Of the 10 callbacks, only 2 made it past group day after getting cut, and none made it to the Top 40.

Yes, I said Top 40.  The Top 24 contestants will be chosen from a group of 40 contestants, rather than a group of 44, as in Seasons 4 and 5.

More on the Top 40

I’m hearing that the talent level in the guys is incredible.  There are full-time musicians in the competition.  For instance, guys who have had record deals and left them to be on the show.  Additionally, there is only ONE contestant under twenty in the top 20 guys.  Over half the guys are over 25.  It seems that TPTB are favoring mature contestants this year, even more than before…

Stay tuned.  You won’t want to miss tomorrow’s installment…

Bits and Pieces

Bits and Pieces

Katharine McPhee took part in the David Foster and Friends Ontario Charity Gala in Niagara Falls Canada.  She sang  “Over The Rainbow,”  “I Have Nothing” and sang a duet with Andrea Bocelli.  Paul Anka, Michael Bublé and Babyface also performed.  The gala raised money to cover the non-medical expenses of families with children in need of organ transplants .

Gray Charles confirms that Taylor Hicks dropped by the Greg Allman and Friends show in San Francisco Thursday night to play harmonica on a number.  A blogger who attended the show recounts it here.  This is what the blogger had to say about Taylor’s performance, “…he’s a legitimately talented dude who is much bigger than the label [American Idol].  And he did a helluva job on the harmonica…”

Jennifer Hudson recently signed on with Clive Davis and Arista records. Here’s what Clive had to say about Jennifer’s talent, “Jennifer is a vocal wonder, a tremendously gifted artist…Her extraordinary voice gives her a signature sound and distinguishes her from every singer on the horizon today. Jennifer is a very exciting new addition to the Arista family.”  Hey Clive! Are you just figuring that out?  You could have signed her in 2004, at the end of Season 3.  Just Sayin’.

Season 1 contestant Jim Verraros talks about his upcoming movie role and being the first former Idol contestant to come out of the gay closet here.  Jim’s upcoming movie is called “Eating Out 2.”  He plays a gay man who plays straight in order to woo a guy who’s a little sexually confused.  Yes, it’s a comedy…

And finally, Jon Peter Lewis continues to promote his new independently produced album, “Stories From Hollywood”.  In this latest press release Jon says, “I was called a lot of interesting and very funny things as a finalist…but when somebody recently called me the ‘Indie Idol,’ that was one comment I was pretty proud of.”

“Stories from Hollywood” reflects the two years JPL has spent developing his sound, and it’s worth a listen.  JPL is no longer your Crazy Dancing Pen Boy.  His debut CD is a fine album of indie rock tunes that would play nicely on Adult Alternative radio.  Yes–alongside Snow Patrol, Coldplay and Death Cab for Cutie.  Listen for yourself–he’s got his tunes streaming on his My Space.  And if you missed it, I wrote a review a few weeks back here.

thanks lisab
