Highlights from Chris Sligh’s Exit Interviews

From MTV.com:

  • Did he struggle with “Every Little Thing” during rehearsals? When I sang with Gwen, that was on Saturday, and I just picked that song out on Friday afternoon and had changed my song. I originally was going to do “Give a Little Bit” by Supertramp, and the Goo Goo Dolls redid it recently. But I really wanted to challenge myself a little bit more than “Give a Little Bit.” I had never really looked at the music [for “Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic”] and had never really actually even listened to the song, so I never realized that it was going to be quite that much of a challenge. Then by the time I got to rehearsals on Monday, I had started to get the rhythm down a little bit, and actually I went back and listened to my performance from Tuesday probably about 10 or 15 times, and it wasn’t a great performance, but honestly it wasn’t as bad as the judges made it seem.

Eliminated tonight:

Gwen Stefani and Akon sing her single, “Sweet Escape”.

(Bear with me peeps…it’s 5:30 on the East Coast and I’m scrambling to get myself ready to board an airplane at 9 am.  The blog won’t be updated as usual this weekend, but I’ll catch up eventually!  To follow is an abbreviated recap of last night’s crapfest show…)

************

This is where I am supposed to yell at “America” for getting it wrong, but I don’t play it that way.  As a long time Idol watcher, I realized long ago that American Idol is first and foremost a reality tee vee show that just-so-happens to feature some singing.  Oh yeah, the singing!  As much as the judges will wail on about how AI is a singing competition (they typically pull this card when they aren’t getting their way), well, we long time fans know better.

I mean, I could whine that lesser singers like Haley and Sanjaya out lasted Chris–contestants who should not have even made the Top 24 let alone the Top 12 if we were to judge on purely singing ability. But it’s pointless.  If AI were actually singing competition, it would run on the weekend, hardly anyone would watch it, and it would be called “Star Search.” And, I’d be off somewhere getting a life.  Maybe.

The truth of the matter is that contestants advance based on a whole bunch of criteria–how much the camera loves them, performance skills, personality, how actively the producers and judges pimp them.  Singing ability is typically at the end of the list.

What made last year so special, was that the best singers generally lasted ’til the end.  The media coverage for the most part stuck to covering the singers and their relative merits as contestants.  This year, the show has turned into a sideshow, with Sanjaya’s hair and Antonella’s half-dressed body driving the coverage. Good singing is on the backburner, with talented vocalists like Leslie Hunt, Stephanie Edwards and Chris Sligh leaving the competition much too soon.

So, bye bye Chris Sligh.  Y’all can argue with me if you want, but I will say without reservation that Chris had the best vocals of all the males in this competition.  I’m disappointed he won’t be performing next week with Tony Bennett.  I have no doubt he would have sung the hell out of a standard and would have lived to sing another week.

Unfortunately, Chris had a bad night.  An off performance combined with an early performance slot and no love from the judges spelled doom for Chris.  At this point, he did not have the fan base to carry him through a hard time.  That’s just how it goes on Idol–a bad night can do a performer in, just like that.

Chris was a front-runner after his initial audition, but he was unable to build on that momentum once the competition started.  Since he’s not a pin-up boy, he had to rely solely on his personality and vocal ability to capture the audience’s attention.  The vocal ability was there in spades.  But, unfortunately, his snarkiness didn’t translate well on the show (It never does–snarkiness generally folds under the cheesy earnestness of Idol) and his precocious song choices and vocal arrangements did not connect with the viewing audience.

Here’s what I think:  Chris will be a highlight of the big cheeseball poptarts concert this summer. There’s gonna be a whole lotta “I didn’t like him on the show, but man, was he AWESOME on the tour.”  He’s gonna do real well in his post-boot interviews–the talk show format will be a much better forum for his personality and humor. I think Chris will go the way of Kellie Pickler–her humor fell flat and felt forced and phony on the show.  Once she was booted and “out of the box” she was able to relax and be herself.  Now she’s a media darling. Chris’s post-idol career has every chance to go the same way.

Bleah, I must catch a plane and I’m barely packed.  I’ll leave you with a couple of things.  Chris has re-opened his entertaining and well-written blog.  Check it out here.  Soon, very soon, I’ll be reviewing the new album by Chris’s band, Half Past Forever.  You can download it at the band’s website or buy it from Amazon.  It’s an awesome collection of pop delights, and I’ve got it loaded on my Ipod and look forward to listening to it on the plane this morning.  If I don’t miss my flight…

Quickly.  A few thoughts on tonight’s show.  I liked Gwen Stefani a bunch when she was the lead singer of No Doubt. But these days, she’s sampling some wacky yodeling crap from “The Sound of Music” and recording pop-pap like ”The Sweet Escape” that’s on par with something Paula Abdul would have recorded back in the 90’s.  Needless to say, I’m not impressed with tonight’s performance.

The Ford commercial features crazy cowboy Chris Richardson and the kids singing ”I Fought The Law and the Law Won.”

Exxon is on board for the big Top 6 week charity event.  I plan to put my cynicism on hold that week.  I’ll be voting and donating.  I hope ya all will be too.

Nice sing-out from Chris. To be honest, when he strolled over to his castmates to give each one a hug, I stopped watching.  I really was that bummed.

Sigh.  On to the rest of the season.  Go Team Plaid.

Top 10 Performance

Tonight, the kids sing songs that inspired Gwen Stefani….

Can we bring British Invasion week back for an Encore?  I heard that Gwen Stefani arrived with a very short list of songs for the kids to sing, and some of them had to switch songs mid-stream.  Tonight, the performers who sing well are boring.  The singers who aren’t boring, have problems performing.  Tonight’s best performances are from Blake, Gina and Phil.

Gwen Stefani is this week’s Idol “mentor.” During her video clip, I’m struck by how normal and down to earth she is in contrast to her stage persona.  She’s like the California girl next door.  We don’t really see Gwen coaching the kids, so much as commenting on their performances.  I love Gwen–she constantly stresses to the kids not to over-sing and to pay attention to the melody.  Indeed, less is more. She’s very honest in her assessment of the kids, which is refreshing. Paula looks very mod tonight.  Love the hair. Continue reading ‘Top 10 Performance’

Idol News Update

Jeanette Walls, gossip columnist for MSNBC cites a Star Magazine report that quotes an insider who says, “Most of these rifts [between Simon and Ryan] have been outlined.”  Producer Nigel Lythgoe responds, telling TMZ Nuh uh. Hmm, what do you think?  Cynical me says that much of the on-camera banter is scripted or at least outlined ahead of time.

Here’s a clip of Paula Abdul on David Letterman last week.  She says Simon has a Teeny Weeny. Eep!

Katharine McPhee is on the cover of this months issue of Self Magazine.  She was recently in New York City hosting VH1 and Self Magazine’s ”Hollywood’s Tightest Bodies” party. Check out pictures of Katharine wearing a midnight blue dress. Kicky!

The South Still Rulz!

The New York Times (registration required) notes that out of the Top 11 American Idol contestants, 7 are from the South.  Andy Dehnart of Reality Blurred further points out that in the Top 24, the South was underrepresented–only 7 were from the South–including Florida, Texas and Virginia.  In other words, Stephanie Edwards was the first Southerner to be eliminated since the public started voting.

Last year, according to Pursuent Research, 39% of Idol viewers came from the South, while 21% each came from the North and North Central regions and 19% from the West.  This year, according to the Times article, ”…the two-hour season premiere had a 34.7 share in Atlanta, compared with 22.3 in New York and 18.2 in Los Angeles [from Nielsen Media Research].”

Ratings News Week 10

Here ya go–this week’s updated Season 6 American Idol ratings chart.  And, here are the preliminary Nielsen numbers for this week:

Tuesday:

Fox’s “American Idol” delivered another dominating performance Tuesday as 29.4 million viewers tuned in to watch the remaining 11 finalists perform, according to early Nielsen estimates. The two-hour “Idol” edition averaged an 11.6 rating/30 share among adults 18-49, more than all other broadcast networks combined.

The only other net to crack the 3 rating point range in 18-49 Tuesday was CBS with “NCIS” (3.6/10) and “The Unit” (3.3/8).

Wednesday

According to preliminary nationals from Nielsen, “American Idol” (10.1 rating/26 share in adults 18-49, 26.3 million viewers overall) dominated the 9 o’clock half-hour, beating the other four English-language broadcast networks combined by 3 shares in 18-49. That led into a winning score for comedy “Til Death” (5.9/15 in 18-49, 14.6 million viewers overall), which was on par with the previous week, when it was relaunched behind “Idol.”

Season 533.3 million viewers tuned in for the Top 11 Performance show, according to Nielsen numbers. That’s versus 29.4 million for this year’s Top 11. 27.6 million viewers tuned in for Season 5’s Top 11 results show, versus 26.3 million this year.

However, Variety reminds us that Daylight Savings Time started 3 weeks early this year, and is having an effect on TV viewership overall–down 6% from last year.  FYI, Daylight Savings time occurred during Week 12 last year.

ETA:  Reader Kirsten points out in comments, that while TV viewership is down 6% from last year, the difference between 33.3 million and 29.4 million Idol viewers is 12%….

Voting totals were down again this week:

American Idol Downloads

Does it bum you out that a favorite Idol performance is only 1 minute 30 seconds long?  Would you just love to hear a full version?  Americanidol.com is making available for download every Top 12 performance–FULL versions of the songs, recorded in the studio by the Idols–for 99 cents a download.  It’s a fantastic idea, and a very smart way to compete with the bootleg mp3s of the live performances that are available all over the net.

I just downloaded Blake Lewis’s (Team Plaid!) and Chris Sligh’s performances. Their Zombies covers from British Invasion week are terrific.  As an aside, after listening to the full version of Sligh’s ”Endless Love” from Top 12 night, I’m convinced more than ever that it was beautifully arranged and performed. The full version is gorgeous. That boy can sang.

After you download Season 6 Idol performances, you can surf to the Idol alumni page, where you can pickup new releases by Taylor Hicks, Elliott Yamin, Jon Peter Lewis and others. Easy, peasy.

Season 6 News Roundup

Next week, pop star Gwen Stefani coaches the Idol contestants.  On Wednesday, Akon joins her to perform Stefani’s hit “The Sweet Escape.”  This week’s theme–the kids get to pick their favorite pop songs.  In other words, they pretty much get to pick what ever they want.

DVR ALERT:  Tuesday’s performance show will run 7 minutes over.  It’s not enough for Fox to kill the competition during Idol’s timeslot–they have to screw with the next hour as well. Sneaky, sneaky.

Check out the HOT (and I don’t use that word lightly) portraits of the Top 12 posted at Getty images. Nice!

People magazine explains what we didn’t see during Tuesday night’s performance show. Funniest bit: Chris Sligh nearly poked Simon Cowell’s eye out with his microphone stand. People also posted bits from Wednesday’s show. The LA Times and Pop Watch both continue with blog reports from inside the CBS studios during American Idol tapings.   I particularly like Richard Rushfield’s insightful reports from the LA Times: Continue reading ‘Season 6 News Roundup’
