2008 Year End Idol Sales and Chart Wrap-up
Here’s a brief wrap of of the Idols on the year-end charts.
Ken Barnes of Idol Chatter has put together an amazing round up of numbers for all the Idols. He’s sorted the Idols alphabetically, and listed their year-end stats for Billboard, Mediabase and Radio and Records. Check it out HERE.
Ken is moving on from Idol blogging, but hopefully, he keeps up with at least some of the Idol sales numbers in another column. The info has been invaluable for us Idol obsessives…
I’ve got my own Billboard end-of-year chart HERE, itsalleternal put together a nice Radio and Records chart HERE and thanks to Folkfan for a round-up of various radio year-end countdowns HERE. Plus, Radio Disney’s Top 50, via Ozarka HERE.
Nielsen sent out their 2008 Year-End Music Industry Report in a press release. Here’s where the Idols stand in the reports various Top 10 lists:

The big Idol chart story of 2008 is Jordin Sparks. The sleeper Idol who came off the show with virtually no buzz not only had a massive hit with “No Air”, but her two other singles, “Tattoo” and “One Step at a Time” were also hits, landing #72 and #63 on the year-end overall. Her album, Jordin Sparks is #64 overall.
Carrie Underwood did well (but not as well as Taylor Swift…) on the country charts–#1 singles artist (Billboard) and #1 Country Artist (R&R), but didn’t cross over quite as well as she did last year. She was #13 overall this year vs #5 in 2007 (Billboard).
Daughtry didn’t release an album in 2008, but he still managed to maintain a presence on the charts: #1 Adult Top 40 (Billboard and R&R), #2 AC artist (Billboard), #1 AC artist; #1 Hot AC artist (Mediabase), #9 artist overall, #2 AC artist and #1 Hot AC artist (R&R). That #4 spot for Daughtry on the Top Selling Digital Albums of the Soundscan Era is pretty sweet.
And, David Archuleta, David Cook, and Jennifer Hudson all got off to a promising start on the 2008 charts. I expect 2009 to be filled with chart success for all 3.

Congrats to Jordin, really. That’s great to see her forging her own path post-AI Winner path, different from Kelly’s and Carrie’s to be sure, but no one can say she’s not succesful. Impressive first year post-AI indeed. It’s great to see all of her listed success and her record went boot.
Great to see David Cook on the list, considering his album just came out in November. Awesome.
Best of luck to all the idols in 2009. Should be fun to see what this list will look like with next year when both Kelly’s and Daughtry’s album come out. Thanks MJ.
Congrats to all of them! I agree that someone, somewhere, needs to give us the full scoop, but I can see why he wants to do something else.
ETA: It seems that USA Today let him go based on his words that he wants to cover Idol elsewhere. Maybe you should contact him mj to make him one of your co-moderators on here?
heres another year end thingy lol

mj – I’ve learned what really happened. I’ll forward you an e-mail that I sent to him.
Big congrats to all the Idol contestants that charted….it’s pretty amazing when you think that just one year ago we had no idea who David Cook or David Archuletta were.
Here’s the last countdown update: The top 30 on AT20’s top 60 HAC songs of 2008:
30.What About Now-Daughtry

Thanks for editing into the original post, MJ. It hadn’t even occurred to me to do that…..
why are people listing Leona Lewis on here???? she is not an idol…she is an x factor girl…heehee
Speaking of X Factor, MJ any chance of you covering that next year?
I’ve been including Leona Lewis on any of the countdown updates because MJ has been monitoring her all year long, because of the X Factor connection.
It’s hard to cover something when you can’t really watch it. Maybe I’ll post some of the more interesting videos, if they pop up on You Tube.
She’s Simon’s girl, so it makes sense. I monitor all kinds of things that aren’t strictly Idol. I covered Nashville Star, Canadian Idol and America’s Got Talent over the summer, so I include those people in my charts too.
Thanks MJ! That would be great.
