Final 3 - Performance Order and Complete Spoiler list

Here is the performance order for tonight:

ETA: Caffiend is back from rehearsal. She said things went well, but that everyone, including Debbie the stage manager seemed very tense. All three seem to be in this to win. Caffiend thought that Syesha Mercado and David Cook sounded a little off-pitch tonight. Overall, The Davids had the most memorable performances. Syesha “Broadwayed” her way through all three numbers. There wasn’t a point where she really connected to what she was singing. She’s definitely gone all glam. Lots of sequins tonight.

1. David Archuleta
2. Syesha Mercado
3. David Cook

1. Judges Choice 2. Kids Choice 3. Producers Choice.

  • David Archuleta - Paula Abdul chose: “And So It Goes” by Billy Joel - Beautiful, best of the 3 songs he did. It was a capella for half the song. he was wearing a tie and leather jacket.
  • Syesha Mercado - Randy Jackson chose: “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys - She wore a sequiny gold gown.
  • David Cook - Simon Cowell chose: “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” by Roberta Flack - He changed it up - made it a little rocky - almost unrecognizable.
  • David Archuleta - David chose: “With You” by Chris Brown - Audience loved it. Lots of interaction with the audience.
  • Syesha Mercado -Syesha chose: “Fever” by Peggy Lee - She wore a very short sequined mini-dress and sung it very suggestively.
  • David Cook - David chose: “The World I Know” by Collective Soul  “Dare You to Move” by Switchfoot - He played guitar. He explained that he wanted to do something upbeat.
  • David Archuleta - The producers chose: “Longer” by Dan Fogelberg - injected some runs - but still good.
  • Syesha Mercado - The producers chose: “Hit Me Up” by Gia Farrell - Syesha’s performances were the least memorable of the night.
  • David Cook - The producers chose: “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” by Aerosmith. Strings and violins on this one.

David Cook Will Win American Idol - And other Random Thoughts

OK, it’s time for a bold prediction.

There have been some truly gifted competitors in the race this year, but in order to win, a contestant needs a clear identity and consistent performances. David Cook has both. He caught the attention of the judges and the Idol audience with a rocked-out version of “Hello” Top 16 week. Subsequently, he’s built a reputation as the clever rocker, navigating this year’s narrow themes without sacrificing his identity. The smart move–singing “Music of the Night” in a straight-up musical theater style surely netted some votes from the non-rock contingent. Way to expand the fan base, Cookie! At this point, I think he’s garnered a broad appeal that will ensure he remains the last idol standing.

OK, I’m prepared for my arse-kicking! Heh.

Meanwhile–we’re still tracking the Final Three spoilers. Check it out. If you know something we don’t, tell us in comments.

Song choices? Can I say I hate “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” with a liquid white-hot intensity? But I won’t rule out the possibility that David Cook can change my mind. It’s Simon Cowell’s choice, picked out of the very short list of songs he’s ever even heard of. I’ve got no problems with the Collective Soul tune “The World I Know” for Cookie. He chose it, and I expect he’ll do a fine job.

Randy Jackson picked Alicia Keys “If I Ain’t Got You” for Syesha Mercado. She could impress if she’ doesn’t over sing it, but I’m not holding my breath. She’s already competed with this song–on the failed ABC TV show, “The One”.

David Archuleta was given Billy Joel’s “And So It Goes” by Paula Abdul. Seriously, a person needs to have experienced a substantial amount of heartbreak to sell this song. I don’t think anyone under 30 should even attempt it. I don’t have high hopes for this one. Dan Fogelberg’s drippy “Longer” chosen by the Idol producers, is right up his alley. More intriguing is David’s personal choice, “With You”. He’ll either sink or swim with this ultra-current hit from the ultra hot Chris Brown. It could be the surprise of the night…

ETA: Update on Syesha Mercado. Her personal choice is “Fever” by Peggy Lee. No screaming or extraneous runs required! And I hope she doesn’t add any. This could go really well for her. Her producer’s choice is “Hit Me Up” by Gia Farrell, from the Happy Feet soundtrack. This is Syesha’s chance to prove that she’s got the potential to be a viable commercial artist. Can she do it? We’ll see…

ETAA: David Cook isn’t singing “Collective Soul”. Instead, he’s performing “Dare You to Move” by Switchfoot. Being that I’m not up on the God rock, I don’t have an opinion ready on this one. His Producer’s choice is “I Don’t Want to Miss A Thing” by Aerosmith, written by that well-known supplier of Idol crud, Diane Warren. SOB. I have nothing more to say.

This will sound incredibly ridiculous to just about every single person reading this, but it’s actually my job to sit on my couch and watch “American Idol” with my friends. I’m sorry if you have a really boring sales meeting coming up in 15 minutes and you’re just killing time on the Internet until then and I just made you start daydreaming about how awesome it would be to get paid money to watch TV. But that’s my job. Really.

Of course, then I have to write somewhat detailed recaps of the show. Recaps that go on for thousands of words where I analyze “Idol”-related issues of monumental importance.

David Archuleta - More on Papagate

Rickey covered the story this morningDavid Archuleta’s vocal coach ran interference for the family on the CBS Early Show Monday morning. I clipped the interview later in the afternoon, and when I went back to check a few hours later, it had over 1000 hits!

This story still has legs! It continues to wind it’s way through the news cycle.

Randy Jackson weighs in in an interview with The Canadian Press. Besides predicting a David and David finale, he downplays Papagate while at the same time admitting that stage parents can make the Idol experience even more stressful for a contestant:

“We’re never backstage and we don’t have that interaction with the contestants at all,” Jackson said from Los Angeles. “I think there’s probably more of a press story there than a reality.”

Still, Jackson admitted that parents can make a tough situation tougher by adding to the anxiety of a youngster already shaken by the prospect of singing live on television.

“It’s hard on the kids, regardless,” he said of the weekly “Idol” broadcast.

“You can put yourself back into high school where your parents are at every show, every stage play, every game, every whatever. I think it’s the added pressure - you want to do good in front of them. … I think the show’s tough on these kids when you imagine that 25 or 30 million people could be watching you that night.”

Indeed, Jeff Archuleta isn’t Idol’s first stage-parent-from-hell according to the stories I’ve heard…

And there is more. Read what MTV, New York Magazine, Idolator, Good Morning America, and Entertainment Weekly have to say. ABC News even has a pictorial review of famous showbiz stage parents!

How will Archie do without Daddy running interference with the Idol staff on his behalf? It’s one more stress for David, probably one he doesn’t need. While there’s always rehearsal time back at the apartment, and cell phone calls that can be made throughout the day, when push comes to shove, it’s going to be Davey vs the Idol staff. I think the Idol staff will win ’cause Davey isn’t use to sticking up for himself. With the Idol staff in a position to exert some influence, David’s performances will likely take on some new dimensions.

It won’t matter, however. I agree with the pundits who think this will be a win-win situation for Archie. If he stinks up the joint, he’ll get a flood of pity votes. If he’s good, there will be much ohhing and ahhing over his ability to succeed without Daddy Dearest.

I’m thinking there is more to this story than is being reported. The whole Sean Kingston/Beautiful Girls kerfuffle may have been a handy excuse to finally get Daddy, who had become a huge pain in the ass, out of the Idol staff’s hair, and also away from the contestants as they prepare for the last push to the Idol crown. If the worst is true–that Daddy has been harassing the contestants–he should have been kicked to the curb weeks ago, not the last two weeks of the competition. It’s going to be an interesting week.

TV Guide covers the Final 3

The final push for the Idol crown is the TV Guide cover story for their May 19 issue (on newsstands this week).

Dark horse Syesha Mercado says, “I believe if you’re passionate about something, it has to happen for you.” In other words, watch out peeps! I still think it’s entirely possible that Syesha could sneak into the Final Two…

David Archuleta defends his stage dad Jeff, “I’ve heard some of the weird things that people have been saying, and it’s kind of a bummer…I think I, of all people, would know what’s going on, and he’s been great. He’s given me a lot of good advice and helped me from making any dumb decisions. He understands more than anyone what I want in music, and I’ve felt really blessed to have to have someone like that.”

Meanwhile, there’s a detailed account of Jeff Archuleta in the studio with David micromanaging his recording session. I can hear a collective sigh of relief from the Idol staff now that Daddy Archuleta has been banned from the rehearsal hall.

David Cook has refused to use his brother’s illness–brain cancer–as part of his backstory, “The sympathy vote idea leaves a real sour taste in my mouth…I swore to Adam and I swore to myself when I got on the show that if I was gonna do well or poorly, it was gonna be on my own merit.” The Adam Cook story has become part of the picture, regardless, even if only to the internet fans who follow the show closely. David says he welcomes the show as a mental break from the stress of his brothers illness, yet, “By the same token, what he’s [Adam] is going through, allows me to kind of have a purer perspective Yeah, Idol is huge and it’s career building, but it’s just a show.”

Ban on David Archuleta’s dad stirs a lively ‘Idol’ debate

Does David minus dad mean danger for American Idol’s presumptive front-runner?

The Associated Press and other news outlets reported over the weekend that David Archuleta’s father has been banished from rehearsals by Idol producers.

The reports say that the action came after Jeff Archuleta demanded phrasing from Sean Kingston’s Beautiful Girls be inserted into David’s rendition of Ben E. King’s Stand By Me last week. The change cost the show additional song-clearance fees. The AP cited an unidentified source associated with Idol who was familiar with the situation; an Idol spokesman declined to comment Sunday.

David’s dad has been a strong presence behind the scenes, and observers wonder what effect the loss of backstage support would mean for David, 17, as the show enters its last two weeks Tuesday (8 ET/PT, Fox).

USA Today

Idolatry

At a time when radio has lost relevance, and many fans have settled on niches that are reinforced on the Web every twenty minutes with updates and free music, “American Idol” offers a recurring event that almost everybody talks about at almost the same time. Every Tuesday and Wednesday, the show attracts some twenty-five million people, and invites them to then argue about what they have watched. (Seventy-four million votes were cast in the finale of the 2007 season.) For some of the younger viewers and contestants, the songs being performed are outside their niche. The two weeks this spring that focussed on the Beatles catalogue were a revelation for anyone smug enough to think that fab is forever. (Pop is too old to have a single, collective memory anymore.) Whatever objections you may have to “Idol” ’s mechanics or style, it asks singers to learn material they may not know, and sometimes even to listen to the people who wrote the songs explain them. This is something that no other content-delivery platform does right now. (A song placed in, say, “Gossip Girl” or “Iron Man” could eventually reach as many people as a song on “Idol,” but with less context.) Any enterprise that lets Dolly Parton expand on her work for an hour is adding to the common good.

The Final 3 - What Should the Idols Sing? - Spoilers Included!

Actually, it’s a moot question at this point. We already know half the songs the Idols are singing–there is only a little room for speculation.

Here’s how it works: The Final 3 sing 3 songs apiece. Each Idol is assigned a judge who picks a song. The Idol picks a song and The producers pick a song. The Idols have no control over two-thirds of the song choices. It’s a process that allows TPTB to control the outcome. Want to throw an Idol under the bus? Make them sing the dour “Vincent” (Clay Aiken, S2) and then change the arrangement at the last minute! It’s a veritable minefield for the remaining Idols.

Here is what we have so far:

David Cook

  • Simon Cowell chose: “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” by Roberta Flack
  • David chose: “The World I Know” by Collective Soul
  • The producers chose: undetermined

Syesha Mercado

  • Randy Jackson chose: “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys
  • Syesha Chose: undetermined
  • The producers chose: undetermined

David Archuleta

  • Paula Abdul chose: “And So It Goes” by Billy Joel
  • David chose: undetermined
  • The producers chose: “Longer” by Dan Fogelberg (this is a brand-new spoiler)

I’m not going to attempt to pick songs for the Idols this week, but I do have a few thoughts.

The last two weeks of Idol performances have–in a word–sucked. Nobody seems to be enjoying their time on the Idol stage these days. Fun times spent flying to Las Vegas last weekend to see the Cirque du Soleil meant less time practicing and resting. It showed in the Idols’ performances last week. While all 4 appeared burnt out, the surviving 3 seemed as serious as a flipping heart attack. The playful camaraderie between the constants has slowly evaporated as each Idol has been eliminated. It’s hard to imagine the kids left–at this point–pulling off an exuberant group number. The energy and chemistry required are MIA. Hopefully, the hometown visits recharged the kids’ batteries, and there will be some new attitudes emerging on the Idol stage come Tuesday. As far as the producers are concerned: Sleep. It’s a good thing. Fit it into the kids’ schedules, will ya?

ETA: I’m also wondering how Papagate is going to affect the proceedings this week. Daddy Archuleta, who appeared to be micro-managing David’s performances and song choices won’t be with David backstage as he rehearses with the band and the vocal coaches. Will little Archie wither under the strain? How will the controversy affect the voters? I’m thinking he’s going to get a ton of pity votes if he tanks on Tuesday. America may think it cruel and unjust to separate a minor from his own father at such a crucial time of the competition. I mean, poor David is only 17! It looks like a win-win situation from here, at least as far as the competition is concerned.  From a personal standpoint–not so much.  Poor little David, for reals

So, peeps, what do you think? What should the Idols sing? What should the Idols do? Are you looking forward to the Final 3? Discuss!

  • David Cook - “Hungry Like the Wolf” - I was hoping for a recording of “Baba O’Riley” in order to get that payoff I felt I was denied when David performed the truncated version Tuesday night. Oh well. “Hungry Like the Wolf” is about SEX. David’s live performance lacked zip, and I’m not getting a sense of urgency from the recorded version either.  ETA: It’s such a dumb song to begin with, it’s hard to take seriously.  I hope David’s hometown visit re-energized him. He seemed way off track this past week.
  • Syesha Mercado - “Proud Mary” - Zzzzz. Did I nod off? Sorry. I said this in my recap–if I never ever ever EVER hear this song again in my entire lifetime, it won’t be too soon. Tina Turner Syesha ain’t. She’s not even a Trenyce.
  • Jason Castro - “Mr. Tambourine Man” - This was a perfect song choice for Jason. The arrangement is wisely kept to acoustic guitar, with a little bit of electric guitar and bass. Jason’s sweet, incomparable vocals bring the poetry in the song alive. My favorite of the four. Oh, how it could have been.
  • David Archuleta - “Love Me Tender” - Hm. No. All the little twinkly Disney embellishments in the arrangement annoy me. And, it’s off to Never Never Land! Gah, I just hate what David’s dad David has done with the melody. Give me Elvis’s tender, sexy version please. The recorded version is even more syrupy and denuded than the live version.
