About Face

I think this is worth noting.  When Sundance Head spoke with People Magazine after his boot, he retracted the statement he made on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show.  In response to his statement to Ryan, that one of the male contestants believes he has the competition “in the bag,” Sundance told People:

I actually need to retract that statement. I love all the dudes on the show and I was baited into that question and I tried to answer it in a funny way but it spun out of control. I just want to say now that all the guys on the show are extremely genuine guys. I have no hard feelings, even for Sanjaya Malakar. He’s young, he doesn’t have a lot of confidence in his voice right now, but that’s going to come to him as he grows. He’s going to be a success in the music biz. He’s full of talent – he’s going to go real far.

Actually, I thought Sundance might have been facetiously referring to himself as the arrogant one — especially since he offered to hire that other guy who was last to be cut from the 24 as his bodyguard. His comments continue to indicate that he felt entitled…how soon we forget how embarrassed he was to be outlasting anyone else in the Hollywood week.

Aw, poor Sundance! I actually didn’t mind him - and certainly wouldn’t have minded him going further. I think he’s a genuinely nice guy, and like the rest of us mortals sometimes misspeaks when trying to be funny or caught in an awkward situation.

It didn’t sound like he was trying to be funny - I think he meant it - I just wonder who he was referring to. Chris R maybe?

Wow. They made him drink the koolaid FAST, didn’t they? And he’s not even on the show anymore!

    Two thoughts:

    1) I think Sundance is, to some degree, misunderstood and probably isn’t as arrogant as he has appeared at certain points.

    2) That said, I think he was serious about his comments to Ryan at that time. This sounds like damage control, or guilt for having bitched about a friend and regretting it later.

Sundance strikes me as the kind of guy who is always trying to be funny but rarely succeeds (see Steve Carrell’s character in the Office). In the week where they had to reveal something interesting about themselves, he didn’t answer it truthfully, he tried to be funny. You can just tell he was up all night trying to think of something funny to say. Sundance is a good guy, he just isn’t too swift with his social banter.

Besides, I’m sure that every year at this point, there are 2 or 3 AI contestants who think they have it “in the bag”. Chris certainly did last year. His stunned look when he got kicked off was just priceless.

I agree MaryS. I listened to his initial interview with Ryan and I think Sundance meant what he said. It seems like he’s either been reprimanded by the actual person, by the AI producers, or is just plain feeling guilty. It’s not like in the initial interview Ryan was like, so are there any contestants who think they have it won and Sundance said, Oh yeah, and then moved right on. Plus, I have a hard time believing that Ryan (who, in spite of some of the weird stuff he sometimes does on the show, is quite a savvy interviewer) would ask a question like that out of the blue…If Ryan he was going to just ask about cocky contestants wouldn’t he have asked if there was anyone who was sure of themselves in general? If I remember right, Ryan’s question was very specific, something like: is there any ONE contestant…

    Just my opinion though.

Oh, Sundance. You are never going to make it anywhere if you aren’t yourself. He has no PR skills whatsoever. I personally thought his exit interviews made him sound like some pompous ass, and retracting what you said just makes you look like a hypocrite

I’m not losing any sleep about Sundance not making the top 12. From his revealing what his song choice was for this week, and doing some “punk rock” version I fear he may have sucked another week. Obviously he doesn’t seem to get what he’s good at, and punk rock isn’t it.

I didn’t care for Sundance and think he has blown any chance for making it with his exit interviews. Saying Ryan “baited him” is a crock. No one baited him into what he gave for an answer. Ryan asked a straightforward question and Sundance answered. No baiting there. I always thought Sundance came off as cocky and arrogant.

Mekia, Chris had every right to look startled when he was voted off in lieu of Katharine. Just look at album sales to date and you will see that Kat after 5 or 6 weeks isn’t even in the top 50 on the Hot 200 album sales while Chris has consistently stayed in the top 10, with 2 #1 finishes and either a top 2 or top 3 finish this week. And unless Kat’s sales improve drastically it is very doubtful that she will even be certified gold. Chris has been certified Double Platinum and now TPTB are predicting 4x Platinum! He is singing to soldout audiences and Home is the “boot” song as you will hear tomorrow night. I think he had every right to be self-confident in view of what he has accomplished.

BTW, I think another Chris is suffering from overconfidence and the person I am referring to is Chris Sligh rather than Chris R.
