Ace Young Interviews David Cook for American Idol Extra

American Idol Extra co-host Ace Young went on tour with David Cook and his band.

David says he’s writing songs on the road. He texts lyrics to himself so he can save them. They discuss his new video and his alter-ego “Terry the Lighting Tech.”

Plus, some “special” fans make an appearance. “We’ve got some very diligent fans,” says David. Ahem.

I saw David in AC and couldnà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t understand why people were so raving about him. The show was average

I’m kind of curious as to why you went. Are you a fan?

Eh, I was going to repeat my “why I’m a fan” speech, but I’m thinking it’s kind of pointless to try and defend him to those who just don’t like him; whether for his performance, his singing, or his hair. If you don’t like him, you don’t. There’s plenty of us that do, though.

Maybe the folks raving about him really mean it. Mileage.

I am so glad someone got video of this last night.

Azalea Queen dances with DC on stage.

Wow. Queen Azalea was *rockin’ out*!

  • Pam:

One thing that Ace mentioned was really dead on accurate and that was in reference to the wide age ranges of the audience. Last night I saw a lot of young children with their parents, grandmas, and plenty of ladies in the 20-40ish age range but there were a lot of men there as well. We basically had every single age group represented last night.

LMAO. I’ve been reading comments about David’s hair for over a year now, and I care now just as much as I cared months ago – zilch, nada, zero.
    It’s the VOICE, y’all, it’s the voice.
He isn’t a model and he needn’t be. Mileage, opinion, all that good stuff.

Supposedly the CBTM video is climbing iTunes and is currently #22. And I have yet to purchase my copy! Yikes.

    Exactly. :cool1_tb:

  • Sydia:

I agree that the voice made me not notice the pretty, at first. However, upon closer inspection, it was jumping out at me. I think he is beautiful; in a male guy next door kinda way. As far as his hair, yea, not a full head of hair, but he has enough to make him look delicious. Jusst annn ooopinion(mine of course). Cook = scrumptious. Nuff said.

  • annabelina:

I do think as a musician/performer/writer, David certainly has miles to go, although I’m enjoying his journey so far. =) His appeal to me personally is that he just seems to be an all around good person, and I think that was best displayed throughout last season as well as pretty much any interview he does. I could elaborate more, but I’ll just leave it at that. =)

Yeah. And if that’s being bald I’d like to know what people call to those who actually have no hair whatsoever. I think he has more hair than back in those Hpapy Together days. David doesn’t have to be the guy with the most hair in the world to be a talented person on what he does. It reminds me of those people who keep calling Kelly fat. If bald and fat are the two things people find to criticize an artist, I guess they’re doing something good.

I couldn’t understand if the that reporter asked Ace the same question twice or they just repeated it. She probably wanted him to tell the show was full of cougars. But Ace didn’t bite.

  • oceana:

It seemed to be an editing goof when Idol Extra showed the same question twice. I thought they did a retake for some reason and accidently showed both versions. I can’t imagine that Ace would answer it the 2nd time otherwise, as if he hadn’t just answered it. Oops.

As for David’s sexiness, to each their own. To me he’s attractive and sexy. To his fans he is. Those who find Kenny Chesney or Justin Timberlake or anyone else sexy, good for them. I mean, to each their own. (I don’t see anything sexy about JT. He totally turns me off.)

I really liked David in his beanie, tshirt and jeans. I wish he’d dressed like that on Idol, actually. LOL.

  • coco:

he looks bloated and resembles donald trump, but seems like a sweet fun guy.

  • Laurie:

David is losing his sex appeal? Tell that to the thousands of fans that were on his fansite the night he performed on AI! lol! From all the comments I have read on various sites, his sex appeal just skyrocketed with the release of the new video. Talk about a beautiful man! That video is gorgeous and the man can act! Between the face, the voice, and the visuals of the video, I was completely captivated! As far as AI Extra, Jillian is a very bad fit for the show. JD gave the show class, she is not a very good interviewer. She seems distracted and I think her co-host would be a far better host.

  • wonderwhy:

David is losing his sex appeal

I never thought he had any.

  • hypertwink:

And as some have already said, YMMV.

  • Jolene:

LOL. Just LOL at the direction this thread has taken.

Oh BTW – that screen cap cracks me up every time. It looks like Dave and Kyle are some crime fighting duo on the job. Kyle looks like he’s trying really hard to solve something. IDK why but it cracks me up.

  • sunchick:

    Donald Trump? Really? *raises eyebrow*
    I mean, reeeeallly?

You’re fired. Ba dump bump chhhht. Thank you, I’ll be here all week.

ETA: LMAO, Jolene. Now I have the The Ambiguously Gay Duo theme song (from SNL) in my head when I look at that picture.

  • Deejay:

This conversation has taken an amusing turn.

Ick. David needs to wash his hair, he is always so dirty looking and not in a good way.

    now ACE is hot!

Eh…I prefer David. It’s a good thing we aren’t all attracted to the same people.

David is losing his sex appeal Heà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s going bald.

…You just noticed he’s losing hair? I don’t think his sex appeal was ever in his hair anyway. Maybe he’ll find some kind of treatment that works to save the hair, but he’ll be ok either way Chris Daughtry isn’t having any issues.

  • hypertwink:

He needs hair or he’ll be next in line to play Lex Luthor in the next Superman movie. Hee.

  • k4dc:

I’ve been studying that hair intently (along with the rest of the head) for over a year now, and I must say I haven’t noticed that the hair is getting any thinner. I think he just has thin hair and a high forehead. But the hairstyle more than makes up for it. Well, that and the EYES.

  • CookVoter:

Thank you MJ for posting this video. We are not able to see this program in our area. We do get Fox TV but this is not included in the lineup.

During my life, I have had the pleasure of attending 100’s of concerts of all genres of music. Recently, I attended a DAVID COOK CONCERT. I feel that I can make comments that are “spot on” being that I have a lot of experience as a member of the audience!

David Cook WOW..WOW.. WOW!!! David and his band are awesome!! His voice is magnificent in a live concert, his band is very tight musically. He is charming, sexy, funny, adorable, and is so gracious. He has a fan base that will do all they can to push his career right to the top! His fans are much the same as those that Bon Jovi has or Michael Jackson once had. Fans that every musician wishes they could capture…all ages! He can sing the phone book as Simon once said. And it all sounds great!

The entire crowd was on their feet at his concert singing, dancing and doing the wave to his music. As an artist when this finally happens you really know that people are into you and your music. This is happening to David when he is just starting!! So, I think all of you should get a ticket to a show and then come back and comment!!

  • oceana:

As for Cook, I still find him grossly overrated as a singer, writer, and performer. Everything about him is so average (especially his new song),

I wonder if you are basing your opinion of him as a songwriter on the 3 songs he has released so far, because he didn’t write any of them. The first one was the coronation song, which he was required to sing when he won the show (and he made it a platinum seller and AC hit, not bad for a corny song).

The 2 singles off his cd are the only two songs he didn’t write or co-write. Many fans don’t feel those are the 2 best songs on the cd. Fans praise his songwriting based on the songs on his cd which he did write, and also on songs he put out or wrote pre-Idol, like on his Analog Heart cd, and another cd that was never released because Idol came along before it could be.

I think he’s a gifted (and prolific) songwriter and so I value all opinions but was just curious if you’ve listened to his own songs that he wrote. There’s also 3 bonus songs, Kiss on the Neck (he and Neal wrote), Breathe Tonight, and My Last Request, which are among the fans’ favorites.

Some of us wish the label was putting out the songs he wrote as singles, but they have their own game plan, and at least the next single will be one that David wrote or co-wrote. I fear that people are forming their impressions of him based on lesser songs off the cd, but I’m not really worried as I know that it all comes out in the wash and eventually people will discover the other songs and his versatility. (But I do love all the songs on his cd, including the singles.)

Don’t get me wrong, I respect your opinion and wouldn’t attempt to change it, I was just curious if you have listened to other songs by him besides the 3 singles. Peace. :)

  • CookVoter:

My opinion is based on many things.. none of them being the three singles he released. Being a big fan of Idol, I watched his every move during Season 7 and could see that he really knew what he was doing and understood the need for progression from week to week. No matter what they told him “he got it” and came back stronger.

My favorites of David’s are “Porcelain” from Analog Heart; “Therapy” from Blindsided (Axium); “Permanent”, “A Daily Anthem”.and “Kiss On The Neck” from David Cook. I have many others I like from Analog Heart too. I love his new CD and realize that RCA has to get paid back for all their support before he can actually bust into his own venture. I’m fortunate enough to have his entire body of work to listen to so I don’t have to just stick with the new stuff!

Plus, he does cover songs so great that I always enjoy seeing those pop on on DCO or You Tube. I don’t understand when people on these threads say he is so average…they just aren’t Cook fans then for whatever reason. David is anything but average and people in the music industry that he comes in contact with rave about his talent.

  • oceana:

    HI CookVoter :)

It’s okay with me if someone thinks he’s average, to each their own. I was just curious if they had heard the songs he wrote, hoping nobody will judge his songwriting skills based on 3 singles which he didn’t write. (And we all know that RCA picks the first few singles, or such is my belief.) I agree CookVoter that RCA is right to call the shots at first since it is their money on the line, and I don’t think David minds waiting for the chance to put some of his own songs (that he wrote I mean) front and center.

Actually we mustn’t forget Barbasol, which he didn’t write but he made small changes, which he loves to perform though, and which is also a new single in the rock genre. It has been shortened for the radio, I’d like to hear the shorter version but haven’t found a link yet.

  • Jolene:

oceana, the radio edit of BBS is available on David’s MySpace. They shortened the guitar solo considerably.

  • oceana:

Thanks Jolene. I think I’ll like the short version.

  • sammi:

i can’t believe how much I hated Ace on the show and how much I love him now. Also David, I couldn’t stand him early on in the season but love him now.
