In regards to his comment about Rush some background information might be relevant. You do know that Rush is native to Missouri, and that his family has been very prominent in the politics there for years. He attended SE Missiouri State for a couple of semesters (is that a rival of Central Missouri – Cook’s alma mater?) before dropping out and getting into radio as a DJ. He came back to Kansas City, working in music and radio, before taking a job with the Kansas City Royals. Yes, he worked for David Cook’s favorite sports team. Since Cook grew up near KC, and is a huge sport’s fan, I’m sure the subject of Rush L. has come up a few times around the dinner table. Hee hee.

I just thought it interesting that he might have more of a background knowledge of Rush’s “sport’s owner” qualification than what you might expect. LOL

Umm… cause you’re reading stuff that ain’t there? Or you’re not reading the charts? Daughtry’s 2nd album has been a resounding success so far, as evidenced by the strong performance and endurance of the lead single (which is still going strong even as the 2nd single is being released) and the album is nearly at 700k already. It isn’t selling as quickly as the 1st did, yes, but remember the 1st album was right after he came off Idol and released at freaking CHRISTMASTIME. After the christmastime it performed on the steady burn track that the 2nd album is displaying all the signs of doing, fueled by a string of great singles. As the songs on the 2nd album are far better than the songs off the first (in general) he will very likely (no evidence to the contrary so far) repeat the same strong performance. Also his large venue tour begins in mid Oct, only a few days away now, this will also help give him legs as he begins to tour in support of the album. So, not sure what else you were expecting to read if you were looking for signs of a huge massive sudden unexpected failure from Daughtry (sorry but you are bound for disappointment).

I’ve been wondering about something. Daughtrys latest album after a good couple of weeks has been sinking just as fast as Hicks first album.
But you would never know that by anything I read. I wonder why that is?

That’s from last weeks’ album chart. Dude is still in the top 50. By this time in his run, Taylor was almost off the chart altogether. Daughtry has a debut song still charting and is coming up on the add date of a follow up single. He probably already sold more albums than Kelly Clarkson. He’s not tearing it up like last time, but he ain’t tanking. And I’m not even a fan of his.

Very happy for Daughtry and Carrie. Wish Kelly got a nom and it goes without saying that I’m bummed about Cook. I’m not entirely surprised. He definitely deserved it, but I’m not sure that a lot of people got the chance to see why, unless they went to a concert. He made tons of public TV appearances performing TOML, Light On and CBTM, when he could have been performing almost anything else more effectively on his album. I still remember his SNL performance and the contrast in fan response to his Light On performance compared to the Declaration performance, or the contrast in the public’s response to his Permanent performance compared to his CBTM performance on Idol. I wonder whether RCA ever realized that they could have done things a little better.

Sigh, this is exactly how I feel. I am so unimpressed with how RCA has handled his material.
But on the bright side, David always starts OK and ends up doing brilliantly in the long run. Let’s focus on album #2!!

This whole paragraph, yes. But all said, DC still has so much going for him, and yay for album 2 on the horizon, woot!

No doubt he’s as nice as they come, but I’d bet my paycheck DC is using this as motivation.

Also, this. What does he say a lot? You’ll get a thousand NOs before you get the one YES in this industry. Dude has worked his ass off to make it in music since he was 15 and he’s got a long road ahead of making more music, and I don’t doubt that he’ll continue to work hard and shoot for the moon. I love that story he likes to tell about when MWK played in LA for a record label showcase, and that one record label exec told him specifically that he wasn’t good enough and for him to quit or something. I love that he didn’t just crumble up and give up on his dream after that. DC’s a big guy. He’s faced bigger disappointments, and hell, if nothing else, he’s in a much better position, financially and otherwise, than he was before Idol, and no matter what, he’s in the position where he can make music for the rest of his life without worrying about getting a day job. It’s all good

Basically it’s just different strokes, I guess. Personally I don’t get why lots of artists are so popular as well, take Nickelback (or their many clones) for example or say – Tokio Hotel. Sometimes we just have to conclude that “it’s just not our thing.”

I feel that way about almost every artist that is big this year. Compared to last year, this is a very lackluster music year for me. Just can’t get excited over Taylor, Lady G or even KOL. While I was a big fan of Eminem and BEP’s earlier stuff, I just don’t think they put out great albums this year. On the other, hand, Beyonce impressed the shit out of me this past year and I was never a fan. I definitely feel out of synch with the public.

The idols, on the other hand, are putting out much better music this year, IMO. I think the recent singles from Daughtry, Kelly and Jordin were excellent.

So what you’re saying is they purposely choose the stinkiest songs as singles? Makes a strange sort of sense… bwah ha.

Naturally, I’m a little disappointed for Cook, but I’m not shocked he wasn’t nominated. He’s a new artist that didn’t blow up on TOP40 radio. The thing that sucks is I know he really was looking forward to a possible nomination; so I feel for him. Still crossing my fingers for the GRAMMYs.

But I hope this lights a fire under him and he gives RCA the Fuck You when it comes to the way his next album is run. Let him have some REAL creative control this time around. The good thing is he has some leverage right now. They tried so hard to Nickelback him and completely screwed him in the singles department. Arguably the two blandest songs on his album were singles (the only two where he didn’t have a writing credit) because the fine folks at RCA didn’t want to take any risks and played it as safe as you could possibly play it. He’s a good songwriter and has a knack for a great arrangement. Give him the goddamn car keys.

I know neither has been announced yet but I believe Kelly shifted around a tour date (before the onsale) that ended up leaving her free on the day of the AMAs which prompted some rumors that she would perform. She has a show in Calgary on 11/20 and her next show would be in Seattle on 11/24 so it seems possible that she has been booked for the AMAs.

As far as Carrie goes there was a leaked Play On promotion schedule a while ago posted at Country On Demand, a country news site. The schedule wound up being deleted but it indicated that she would be performing at the AMAs. So far that leaked promotion schedule has proven accurate.

Kris Allen performing was just me wishful thinking which is why I said hopefully with regard to him.

All award shows space out their performers announcements to keep the buzz going so I’m sure acts have been booked to perform without having been announced yet.

At this point Kelly and Carrie are well established beyond AI so I don’t think having them perform on the same night Adam Lambert is also performing turns that show into AI. Although frankly I feel many non-AI acts could learn a little something from several AI alumni about turning in a good all around performance that doesn’t sacrifice good vocals for show.

Isn’t Kelly supposed to be performing at the AMAs? That’s what I’m looking forward to. And I’ve heard Carrie is too. And Adam. Hopefully Kris too. Let them show the rest of the industry how it’s done. These awards matter not.

They can snub Cookie all they want. He is and will always be one classy guy. Most awards aren’t worth the paper they are printed on. Let his music do the talking. It already has and I’m sure his new stuff will be light years better.

Daniel B: The only problem so far (and it is a big one) is that RCA apparently picks singles by having a group of howler monkeys randomly throw darts at a board that only has tracks from the album that David didn’t write himself as options.

I like David Cook more than Daughtry, but Daughtry has sold a lot more albums than David. I am not surprised David Archuleta wasn’t nominated. He sells more singles than albums, plus his music doesn’t exactly burn up the charts. I understand people wanting to honor Michael Jackson because he died, but he received plenty of awards when he was alive. His nominations could have went to more deserving nominees.

eh, i’m not mad at ‘em for not nominating david… his career is young, he’s still progressing and maturing as an artist, so no heartburn here… because of his relative youth, he has plenty of time down the road for other noms and possible awards… congrats to carrie and daughtry for representing, and good luck to them both!

I’m completely not surprised that Taylor Swift and Micheal Jackson dominate. They probably sold more albums than anyone else this year.

And it’s even less surprising, personally, that the only artist/group that I like on any list (discounting Michael Jackson, because whilst I don’t like him, pretty much everyone has a Jackson song or two that they like) is Kings of Leon.

As trite as this sounds…most award shows are just revenue builders. They are often a cash cow for the network, they increase sales for the performers, presenters, and winners and they provide a reasonably fun evening of television. They aren’t earth shattering…and one of these trophies isn’t going to define anyone’s career.

Last year Carrie, Daughtry and Jordin Sparks not only were nominated for AMAs but won. And if Carrie/Daughtry win this year, I think it’ll be her fourth and his third AMA.

AMA loves its Idols. Kelly Clarkson and Clay Aiken have also won. Cook wasn’t nominated because LO and CBTM weren’t big Top 40 hits. That’s really the only reason.

Kelly or Pink. They’re my favorite female vocalists, and these two had banner years with monster singles and great tours. I mean… Eminem? And just too many repeats in general. What’s with Taylor and MJ being in so many categories. There are only 3 nominees, so by doing this, unless they stack the presenters and performers, they really lower the number of celebs attending the show!
