I prefer Time for Miracles to FYE, but like both. I am older and don’t like the newer stuff as much so that is not surprising. Why isn’t TFM being played on Christian Stations. I know the disaster film is violent, but the lyrics are inspiring.

I couldn’t agree more. I mean I get that it’s pretty much the job of the AMA guy to hype his show, so frankly I just put it down to self-motivated hyperbole and moved on. I have hopes that someday Adam will be successful, but there is no damn guarantee, especially in this economy, with the music industry in the trouble it’s in and when songs like Fireflies can be number one hits. Who can tell who will be commercially successful and why?

I have been out of pocket to post for some time/but, have kept up with all the daily/nightly blogs on MJ’s….and, for sure have kept up with all Adam news and events each and every day. TFM is Epic in everything musical that it needed to be..and beyond. I have grown to really, really
like the song, his presentation, the vocals and his video and the emotion he shows on the video…I have had countless people of all ages, likes and dislikes, comment on his voice and how much they loved listening to it…and, would be going to the movie to hear him sing at the end! Now, for the subject matter, FYE…So smart of him to do the albumn cover he did…got attention…made thousands talk….got sooooooooo much media attention..papers, tv, magazines, etc. there was no end to it for 48 hours. Then, the single drops while all this attention is FRESH and you have interest galore and more in Adam.
My husband and I say this was a tremendous idea and it has worked.
Adam knows no limits to what he can do with his voice, he had me at Brigadoon and his first audtion of AI. He need not prove one thing to me. I know that voice and what it can do. FYE is a current song and it
is important to show that he can be as good doing this type of song,
as he can doing classical, ballads, soft rock, rock, pop, and, even religious..(“The Prayer”, etc.)and, no doubt in my mind he could do a Vince Gill, Garth Brooks or George Strait cover and it would blow all our minds. As for the lyrics being about rape, please, after listening to music for many more years than I care to admit, and, coming from a family background of musicians who were very skilled in their performances and teaching of music abilities, this talk of rape is all very wasteful chatter/but, I guess makes good conversation for some. I can’t even begin to list the artists and songs through the years that some would say had lyrics that made these look like nursery rhyme phrases. A member of my family in the 90’s was a member of the 4 Non Blondes group, which many will remember, as Linda Perry was the lead singer and I have kept up with current music for the younger generation since. I think(personal opinion) that Adam is one smart and super talented guy and that and his Mom/Dad/brother have gone through a lot seeing him come as far as he has and he has earned what is happening to him now. I really cannot imagine how anyone sees anything in this song that is what some are describing as rape.
I know he is going places and has a lot of people in the industry behind him, that is the best part of all of this…I know he has, not only his many loyal fans….but, those in the know to assist him in all his musical endeavors. I am enjoying FYE and cannot wait to hear all the rest of his songs and see all his upcoming appearances…..So, everyone
just sit back, relax, enjoy life and enjoy Adam…I sure intend to!

What’s interesting is that those in the industry, including mega-successful songwriters, producers and artists have spoken very highly of Adam’s vocal talent, some saying they have never heard a voice that can do what his can. It’s amazing to me that those people who are actually successful in the music industry and actively involved in making the music we hear on the radio, on our ipods find his talent something special.

TBH, I’ll take Rivers Cuomo, Greg Wells, Rob Cavallo, Brian May, Smokey Robinson, Claude Kelly, Billie Joe Armstrong and their opinions regarding Adam’s voice and be happy.

Noctem, take it up with the AMA guy, he’s the one who said it.

Erinn, have you seen the analysis of Adam’s vocal technique by DDD (ranking him number 2 in all time rock voices) or perhaps the review by four West Coast opera critics? – sorry I don’t have them to hand but both have been posted or referenced in this thread and many others. These studies were both by disinterested parties, and both conclude his voice and technique are incredible.. You and your friends are obviously entitled to their completely unbiased opinions but you might find these studies an interesting read.

Jordin Sparks and David Cook, both of whom who have a platinum album and multiple platinum singles, may have something to say about that. So too would David Archuleta, who has a gold album and a platinum single and Kellie Pickler, who has a gold album. In fact both, Archie’s and Kellie’s albums are closer to platinum than gold.

And then, of course, there’s Jennifer Hudson who has an Oscar AND a Grammy… and a gold record. And Clay, Ruben, and Fantasia all have multiplatinum career sales.

Erinn…though most of your post is your opinion this is one that I find hard to believe….I have a few friends who are vocal coaches and or have studied opera. NONE of them would agree with this statement at all. I think anyone with a lick of salt in the field of voice would even make this kind of statement. One thing that all the people I know agree upon when it comes to Adam is his vocal Technique…His breath control is outstanding almost ridicules. There is site, which has been talked about many times on this blog called DDD music forum with a bunch of different individuals who are experts in the field…They all agree about Adam’s technique infact they rate him 2nd amongst all rock vocalist and first in best live performance. here is the link http://forums.nutsie.com/viewtopic.php?t=54895&postdays=0&postorder=desc&start=30

I read on the wiki of Dr Luke that he has a history of writing lyrics touching taboo subjects (I don’t mean rape btw).

He is known for writing heavy pop-rock songs and occasionally hints on taboo subjects. His songs also used a combination of live and electronic instruments, also known as electropop.

I think Adam made a smart choice here, the song is very dance and radio friendly, and a live performance of it is probably going to be pretty cool, I downloaded it and can’t keep my feet still….I think he did real good……I also think we are going to hear all types of sounds on his CD, which is a smart move , most CD’s I have bought lately seem to have the same type of songs over and over…so looking forward to this change..

I can’t discuss what friends you have but I will gladly discuss different aspects of Adams singing technique, good or bad.

You’d have to go back a few pages, but things have gotten out of context. The actual post was about bias, and arbiters of taste, and I was in a discussion with a few people about Ann Powers, Lyndsay Parker, and masterclass lady about their bias towards Adam, and how it’s difficult to separate that from their comments. There are, and will be journalists and voice experts who will give Adam positive reviews, but I would be hard pressed to call any of those three objective.

There seemed to be mostly agreement on this, but if I’m misstating that, please correct me. ETA: I mean the original people I was talking to last night.

Any responses to this, I would prefer that they accompany the original discussion, but I wanted to bring you up to date before I post the anecdote in total.

As I stated before, though, another person’s opinion does not invalidate your own. Even if that person has objective reasons for feeling the way they do. Just because these guys feel this way doesn’t mean you are wrong.

This is – now completely out of context – anecdote…

Strangely, I’ve yet to meet a vocal coach/ person with a voice degree who likes Adam for anything besides wanting to grab his ass. The ones I know mostly preferred Anoop’s voice, and ended up liking Kris or Allison at the end. A few didn’t mind Gokey either. They all thought Adam had a great range and no clue what to do with it. Despised his technique. Pretty unanimously. It even surprised me. A few of them loved the theatricality of his performances though. A couple once joked with me that they’d put the TV on mute, and enjoy the show. lol’ ¦One of my best friends is a musician with a degree, and I’ve met and befriended a lot of people through him, and some of my other experience with musicians.

And yet, none of that means anything other than their opinion. YMMV, and so can other vocal coaches, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Ya know?

I mean, a lot of these same people loved Katharine McPhee, and her amazing and well-trained voice ‘â€œ who I couldn’t stand during the competition, and nothing they said would make me change my mind.

I should state that I’ve worked in and around the entertainment/ arts industry in some form for 16 years – since I was 17 – so a lot of the people I know come from those kinds of backgrounds.

ETA: Finding something interesting, or of note, does not mean finding it validating. It just means it’s worth looking at. There is no right or wrong in “interesting.”

I know right? Ironic considering… nvm.

I too have read vocal coaches, trained vocal experts “with degrees”, and the like, go on and on about Adam’s vocal prowess. But, honestly, I don’t believe you have to be any of those things to recognize the amazing control and range that he has. There are countless examples, but the stunning climactic run on Feeling Good (live and studio) is more than enough for anyone who has ever sung (and even those who’ve not) to recognize remarkable “technique” as he scaled up, held the glory note, and then scaled back down seamlessly. Really remarkable.

Mileage, of course and as always…
