In Wednesday’s recap of the Top 8 results show, I wondered why a pre-recorded performance of Akon singing his hit “Don’t Matter” was inexplicably part of the show. me: except Ryan did mention it right before Akon’s appearance. Bad me, I missed it FFing through the boring Farmers Market segment. Ryan says the top 50 is culled from all the Billboard charts. Thanks Sarah.
Here is the reason. Akon’s performance is part of a new americanidol.com website feature called The Hit List. Fans who visit the site can vote for 5 favorite songs from a list of 50 songs posted on the site. The votes are tallied, and announced on the show.
Each week, an artist on the list will perform a song on the show. Some of the artists you can vote for: John Mayer, Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Katharine McPhee, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry and Pink.
I believe Robin Thicke is slated for one of the upcoming shows. He recorded a performance the same night as Akon.
Also, while poking around the official American Idol website, I found this. A partial list of Idol Alums who will participate in this summer’s brand-new Idol Camp has been announced. Spending part of the summer in the beautiful Massachusetts Berkshires will be, Bucky Covington, Carmen Rasmusen, Vonzell Solomon, Kimberley Locke and Jon Peter Lewis.

The Hit List - interesting among the 50 listed, they have 2 of Carrie’s songs (”Before He Cheats”, and “Wasted”), 2 of Daughtry’s (”It’s Not Over” and “Home” - imagine that), and Katharine’s “Over It”. Most of those on their list I wouldn’t listen to if given to me. There is also a place where one can include some songs they’d LIKE to have on the list (not that it will do any good, but I listed some of Taylor’s, including “JTFTW” and “The Right Place”)
Thank you for all the interesting topics on the front page, MJ, as well as the Daily Chat pages.
MJ, I think Ryan did mention a blurb about it. I’m not sure *exactly* where in the show, but I want to say it was either before or after Akon’s performance.
Fergie has also taped a song to be shown one week, as has Pink, I believe. The EW behind the scenes articles talk about the tapings.
ETA: I believe the 50 songs on their list are currently on one of the billboard charts? Not sure though.
Okay….so, if the songs have already been recorded…..why are we voting?

I had the same thoughts. Sounds like a way for them to get Daughtry back on the show since Nigel said there were no plans to have him back. I also listed the same 2 songs from Taylor that you did. I wasn’t aware that Kat had a top hit??? Call me confused. I do like Carrie, but, she has been on the show umpteem times already.
Both of Carrie’s songs are legitimate major hits and BHC is exploding now on non-country radio making it a required selection along w/ Wasted. I agree that more Some Hearts album performances on Idol this year would be overexposure. Plus she has reportedly already shot non-performance footage for the Idol special during her past overseas trip, so her next live AI visit should be next season. Kat’s song is doing well on several charts as the current charts tab at the top of this site indicates.
The hit list only states that the top 5 voted songs each week will be announced and that 1 of the 50 will be performed–not necessarily the voter’s picks. And the top 50 are hits based on actual charts so Taylor needs major airplay to appear as an listed option on the chart. Nevertheless, I hope Kat, Chris, Taylor, and Elliott all get the chance to return this season and cut the deadweight from these hourlong results shows.
Have been writing in Elliott’s song “wait for you” for days now.
Will continue, would be great to see him on the show, doubt it will happen but have always rooted for the underdog (:
Give it up people-the pimpimg started last year and Simon has made his point this year. Your votes don’t matter and are not important to them. I guess Elliot shouldn’t have been friends with Taylor and sung with LIMBO. He is getting the TAYLOR treatment too.
Maybe if Melinda and Lakisha get the boot at 4th, Simon will make a point with the winner and stop this INSANITY!!
I have been voting daily for my top five. After I rank them I write in Elliott Yamin/Movin On and Elliott Yamin/Wait For You. The results from last week are listed on the site now.
This thread is NOT about Taylor Hicks and Season 5. It’s about Akon and the Top 50 Hit list. STAY ON TOPIC.
Sorry MJ, this is about the list-it is manipulated to suit their rules, again. I’ll be good.
How do you write in?
I thought the exact same thing when I first saw their choices. A lot of them had already recorded, or were scheduled to be on there, so it made me wonder if we were really getting to choose. Neveretheless, I voted for The Fray as my first choice, knowing I probably stand no chance of seeing them on AI.
After you rank your choices, it gives you some empty lines to write in your own choices.
This is so silly. There is just too much going on with all they are doing this year! This is just my opinion, but it seems they want to cash in while they are still on top.
Now, I think this camp idea will be good even after the show is no longer on the air:
Campers create their own schedules by choosing from classes in singing, dancing, acting, song writing, audition and performance techniques, personal style, video production, set design and more. Instruction will be provided by respected professionals, with special master classes featuring guest artists such as favorite former American Idol contestants, recording artists, and other top industry professionals.
Because there is so much cuts in the Arts, this could be very helpful. So glad there are scholarships available!
Say, do you think they will have any of the dancers from, “So You Think You Can Dance?”
You know, it’s funny, when I write in, I write in people like Amy Winehouse and James Morrison. New artists who have albums out with great songs on them who DIDN’T get the exposure of being on tv in front of 30+ million people for 13+ weeks.
And I think it’s already been confirmed that Daughtry will be back to sing “Home”. So this is not some devious plan to get him back on the show.
I voted obviously for the two Daughtry songs #1 and #2, then Carrie’s “Wasted” #3….and at the request of my daughter, Hilary Duff’s “With Love” #4 and Hinder’s “Better than Me” #5. LOL
My write-ins are at the top of the ROCK charts but won’t ever be played on AI. Songs like Breaking Benjamin’s “Breath” and “Diary of Jane”, Papa Roach’s “Forever”, and Saliva’s “Ladies and Gentlemen”. Sigh.
I voted but I don’t think I will again. I think they have already recorded who they want. After all, there aren’t that many weeks left. Just another ploy by the PTB to make us think we are involved.
