Allison Iraheta is Signed to 19 and Jive Records!

Entertainment Weekly has the scoop:

And the record deals for American Idol season 8 finalists continue to roll in at a quick clip. After champion Kris Allen’s deal with 19/Jive and runner-up Adam Lambert’s deal with 19/RCA were announced earlier this week, EW has exclusively learned that 19 Recordings has also signed fourth-place-finisher, rocker Allison Iraheta, and that her debut album will be licensed to Jive Records, like Allen’s forthcoming disc. And just like the the albums from her two fellow alums, Iraheta’s is anticipated for a fall release. (Talk about an Idol-rific autumn!)

All week long, Idol fan sites like mjsbigblog were abuzz with rumors of Iraheta’s signing. The 17-year-old singer sounds like she’s barely processing the news herself: à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“I think Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢m still in shock that this is happening — getting to record my first album and this whole awesome experience is a dream come true!à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ Allison said in a statement released to EW by 19 Recordings.

Notably absent from the recent spate of deal-making? Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢d be polarizing third-place finisher, Danny Gokey. Says a rep at 19: “Thereà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s nothing to report just yet.”

Thanks for the nod, guys! And Allison fanboy, Michael Slezak, could not be happier!

Say what you want haters, but I would suspect that Gokey is probably the only one in the top 4 who actually needs money.

I’m not a Danny hater, but I do have to wonder why you think he’s the only one who actually needs money. By the number of different glasses he’s sported, I find it a bit difficult to believe he’s in dire need of money. I just don’t think any of them are independently wealthy.

  • Allison has fabulous phrasing. The only real problem she had during the season was with her diction, but she was wearing braces on her lower teeth. She’ll be fine once they come off (if they haven’t already). She’s only 17! She has nowhere to go but up, and she’s starting from a very high place.

I am so excited for her and her legion of fans. Sometimes (in both her case and Kris’s), the cream really does rise to the top, in spite of the best efforts of TPTB.

And, yeah, I’m feeling bad for Danny right now too. Was never a fan of his singing or his cluelessness, but I don’t think he’s a bad guy at all, and I do think he was badly used. Idol is not a warm and fuzzy place for the naive or slow on the uptake.

  • Brian Mansfield has the official PR – Allison Iraheta signs to 19/Jive

à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Allison was an absolute stand-out this season,à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ stated RCA/JIVE Label Group’s Chairman and CEO Barry Weiss. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã…“Her bluesy, powerful voice, spunky attitude, and edgy star power immediately captivated us and it didn’t matter where she ranked on Idol, we knew we wanted her to join our amazing crop of young talent at Jive.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬

She was going to get signed no matter what :-)

  • Her phrasing is one of her fantastic talents. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve seen many people praise it, and Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve never before seen anyone say ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a problem.

From the way the original statement was worded, I think the poster meant Allison’s ennunciation, not phrasing. I agree with you… her phrasing is excellent!

    50%??? Thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s basically slavery.

Well, that’s not a definite. I just said I wouldn’t be surprised. Typical management deals range from 15-25%. But half has happened befoe when you are dealing with big, greedy, powerful entities signing newbies, so anything is possible.

  • Well, over the past 3 seasons ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s been four to Jive, two to RCA, one to Arista, and one to Arista Nashville. So, pretty spread out – only J is missing but they havenà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢t signed an R&B artist since Fantasia so thatà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s not surprising.

Labels such as Columbia and Epic, now part of the SonyBMG umbrella (formerly Sony before the merger), have yet to sign anyone.

The country labels would probably be the attraction for Megan, since they don’t really have anyone else to pick from this season. (Even though I would expect her to be a total flop like Kristy Lee; I’d rather see Felicia Barton signed.)

  • I’m late to this thread so i’m just going to say CONGRATS TO ALLISON!!!!!!
I can’t wait to get her CD.

  • There has been a lot of talk about Allison’s enunciation. ie. she puts an “H” sound in front of her words. This is true. But a lot of people have said that this is because of her braces. I disagree. The “H” sound would not have anything to do with that because that sound comes from the throat.

The most likely reason for this “so called” problem is that she grew up singing in Spanish. She is only 17 and hasn’t had the experience to get over the linguistic differences.

I have been an ESL teacher for the past 14 years.

This is the most likely explanation for the “H” problem.

I couldn’t agree with you more, Allison’s enunciation was due to her background, not her braces…

I can hardly wait for the CD’s of Kradison

  • Yeah Allison!

  • dcmjfan127: What does A&R stand for?

It stands for Artist and Repertoire. An A&R person looks for artists/songwriters/producers, helps them with their development, and hooks them up for projects.

There hasnt been a press that said Theresa is Allisonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s A&R so i wont believe it.

Yeah — it’s easy to say that Teresa is her A&R because she’s the head of A&R for Jive’s parent group, Zomba, but that doesn’t mean that she’ll be handling her personally. Similar to saying that someone’s being managed by Simon Fuller when they’re directly managed by someone under him.

matkojapan: Allison has stated on numerous occasions that she writes her own stuff.

The one example of a song that we know she cowrote is Take It Or Leave It — her recording of it is at:
    http://www.youtube.com/user/BrandonPetersMusic

Me: Her phrasing is one of her fantastic talents. Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve seen many people praise it, and Ià ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢ve never before seen anyone say ità ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s a problem.

tinawina: From the way the original statement was worded, I think the poster meant Allisonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â€ž ¢s ennunciation, not phrasing.

Yeah, I know she did :wink_wp: — but I figured some people might be sick and tired of me saying that her enunciation is, as matkojapan said, only a “so-called” problem. Other singers make the same stylistic choices she does, such as the “H” at the start of some words. As far as I’m concerned, she doesn’t need to change a darned thing about her enunciation/diction!

  • “Here comes the next Daughtry imo.” (from pg one)

C.D. had best look in his rearview mirror, lest he’ll get his ass run over by The Rocker!
And, I’ll surmise that Fuller takes a personal interest in this girl. He sees the writing on the wall!

  • Do you guys think my boy Matty G still has a chance to get signed?
I am so worried about him.

  • “Do you guys think my boy Matty G still has a chance to get signed?
I am so worried about him.”
I think Matt has more than a chance to be signed, He is too good to pass up on. I am just losing hope everyday that he will be signed to 19. This doesn’t mean the end of the world by any means, it just means that we’ll have a longer wait before we hear news on who he is signing with. :thumbup_tb:

  • maracaibo: Do you guys think my boy Matty G still has a chance to get signed?

Not by the 19/Sony machine, no, I don’t think so. But I’d encourage you to take the same attitude I did with Allison — hope that another label (whether major or indie) will pick him up later, and if not, that he’ll self-produce stuff. Indeed, if Jive screws Allison over musically, as I fear they might, I’ll be wishing that they had passed on her and she had gotten a deal with a better label. I think that’s how I’d be feeling now if I were an Archie fan. So, you never know — Matt (and anyone) might be better off musically outside the 19/Sony machine.

  • It may be better off if Matt can get signed outside 19 (if I’m being completely honest, that’s why I was sorta hoping Kris would finish at 3rd, for a little more artistic freedom)

  • I remember reading the posts in the beginning of this season, perhaps it was Idolatry or elswhere, I don’t remember, but people were complaining that there was nobody really standing out of the crowd this year and that it would be a booooring Idol after David Cook (my favorite from last year). And now we have THREE great idols (Kradison) and some other with great potential (Matt and Anoop) :) Yeay!!!
Did not like Danny, really disliked him later in the season, but now I feel really sorry for him – yes, he is clueless and self-appreciating, but as you guys said, he was kind of used by AI :( Wish him all the best, honestly

I didn’t understand the ‘needs money’ statement as well but I do know that he came to AI with 15 pairs of glasses (not much, in my opinion, as he’s been using glasses for many years) and finished with more than 50 pairs (which he said in an interview that were all gifts, he didn’t need to pay for any of them).

  • I didn’t read any of the comments, this blog is moving way too fast for me lol.

I am so glad this is official and I could not be more excited to see what the future holds for Allison.

  • I’m late to the party but just wanted to say, “Yay, Allison.”

This girl amazed me all season with her talent, her maturity and her incredible personality. The way she handled Simon’s criticisms, how she got along with EVERYONE, her tactfulness, her enthusiasm … she’s amazing. When I heard that she was looking after a reportedly drunk Megan at the Idol afterparty (I saw the raw video), I thought, “who’s the adult here?” She’s just a warm, genuine person who seems like she’d be an awesome friend. She’s got all the qualities to make it big. Hope she does.

    Go Kradison!

  • We are at enunciation again. There is absolutely NO DOUBT that the “grill” full braces on Alli’s bottom teeth cause enunciation/diction problems. If it is true that her top full grills were removed in the past several months, there is ossibly some lingering effect from them as well. Anyone who has worn such (me), has a child who has (me), or has close teenage friends with braces(me) knows this. Any orthodontist will tell you this (just called my ortho buddy). Alli also uses stylistic variations which are not problems. The enunciation problems will disappear contemporaneously with the braces

I said a while back that the cause of the breathy “h’s” should be easily deduced. And the linguistics is it. However, I do not recall anyone saying that the braces caused the breathy H’s. They do not.

Other that the linguistic factors, I have wondered about another possible factor. It seems that many, many light years back in another universe not unlike our on that I was taught as a method to punch out, give power to certain words with a little “ha” push. Anyone heard of this as a technique, or have you taught or employed it?

  • ppwars;

unless she is wearing a retainer, braces on the front of her teeth should have no affect on her enunciation whatsoever.

This whole braces thing is ridiculous.

If anybody on here has studied linguistics (as i have) they would know that she has a slight Spanish influence on her enunciation! NO BIG DEAL!!

As for the “ha” push. yes. ALL talented singers sing more from the diaphragm than
the throat. But almost none produce the “h” sound before words.

I honestly don’t even know why this is an issue!

    Braces=no
    Cultural and linguistic background =yes

let’s celebrate Lava Girl!! or should I say the rocker!! how about Lava Rock Grrrllll??

  • one more thing, if it were a braces problem it would come through on her recordings. and it doesn’t.

When she is on stage she is singing based on emotion and what she knows. no time for a re-take.
that’s why the Spanish influence comes through.

    again. no big deal

    cheers

  • Braces = yes, no doubt. Our universes are different here. Many here who have worn braces have experienced problems, I wager. Just as with the other issues, these problems are easier to control in the studio than live.

Linguistics/culture = yes, which I have always fully understood. And good technique could easily exacerbate/accentuate L/C influences (the “ha’s).

I AM in the “huh”, “what” camp, as in who cares? But, as all things Idol, the “let’s flail on a contestant for something” eye turned on Alli on these NON-issues. Thus, all this junk….

and, as you said, no big deal.

    cheers
