American Idol 9 Final Week Rumors – 05/25/10

This thread is going to be the central repository for rumors/confirmation about this week’s final and finale.

Keep checking back for updates.

3rd Update: From @Mix1063:

“The guys of season 9 are singing Hall and Oats “You make my dreams come true” and “Maneater”
Lee sings with Hall and Oats “I can’t go for that” Tomorrow Night on Fox 66″
Crystal Bowersox performs Joe Cocker “With a Little help from my friends””

2nd Update: AINow.org is reporting that there will be a tribute performance featuring Idols on Wednesday, but it will only include Idols not signed by 19

UPDATE: TMZ is reporting that Paula Abdul was out shopping for a dress recently and that she will be attending the finale tomorrow. More HERE.

RUMORS

  • @h20waterconvo tweeted last night:  “Fox 11 News just said Lee & Crystal will sing 3 songs each tomorrow – winner’s song, producer’s pick and contestant’s choice.”
  • Hollywood Life is reporting that Lee Dwyze and Crystal Bowersox will sing with Joe Cocker at the Idol finale! ! Read more HERE.
  • “American Idols Top 10 perform “Schools out For The Summer” by Alice Cooper Tuesday” via @MIX1063 (if this is true, I would think the group number is for Wednesday’s finale)
  • People magazine reported that Paula Abdul will appear to help send off Simon Cowell. At the very least, she will probably appear in a video tribute.
  • Janet Jackson will perform on the results show.
  • Chicago, the Bee Gees and Hall and Oats have supposedly been tapped to keep the Baby Boomer demo happy.
  • Cleveland radio station @WQAL “Seems the Christina Aguilera rumor is true.. as we hear the gals practicing Stronger! Sounds Good!”
  • @WQAL “Rehearsals going on… The Boys are practicing a rendition of “Pants on the Ground!!!”
  • Idol Tracker reports that the Melissa Etheridge/Crystal Bowersox duet may be back on the table (The appearance contract Etheridge signed with Dancing With The Stars would not allow her to appear on the Idol finale)”

Idols who have confirmed their return to the Finale (or not)

  • Elliott Yamin tweeted on Monday: “my homie taytay hicks gets in town 2day…gonna get 2 share the stage with him again!..1st time since r idol days..can yall guess what 4 ??” (Tay tay is Taylor Hicks).
  • Michael Johns tweeted on Monday:  “It was fun being back at the Idol finale today. Good to see some old friends. I got asked to perform on Wednesday night. Pretty excited…Can’t give too many details sorry but its going to be pretty epic”
  • Blake Lewis tweeted last night that he WILL NOT BE PERFORMING on the finale

Confirmed to Perform:

  • Will Young will sing the boot song, “Leave Right Now” on Tuesday night’s performance show.
  • Christina Aguilera, Carrie Underwood, Kris Allen and Enrique Iglesias will be appearing on Wednesday’s finale  to perform their new singles.

  • Valentin432

Thanks for the recap Mj, hope this is the sign of two really great nights of entertainment.

  • Patroo

Looking forward to the boys rendition of ‘Pants On The Ground’. That Larry something (original artist) is going to be rich.

  • Kirsten

The appearance contract Etheridge signed with Dancing With The Stars would not allow her to appear on the Idol finale

Boo on DWTS. I dislike it when these shows try to limit others’ opportunities. I can see why they wouldn’t want the person on the other show at the same time, but what do they care after their season is over? AI didn’t bar Miley from appearing on DWTS after she’d done a turn as a mentor/performer on their show.

Will Young will sing the boot song, “Leave Right Now” on Tuesday night’s performance show.

What a flop of a boot song. I hope they let us see the “montage of the year” instead of focusing on Will Young the entire time. I have nothing against the dude, but the song is terrible (and the lyrics are totally inappropriate for a boot song. Even the title. That song can’t leave soon enough).

h20waterconvo tweeted last night: “Fox 11 News just said Lee & Crystal will sing 3 songs each tomorrow – winner’s song, producer’s pick and contestant’s choice.”

Blech! I hate the producers mucking around with the finale. This is the chance for the contestants to feature themselves. The coronation song is a given and you can’t escape it (Cook/Archie kind of did a little), but the producer’s choice is a terrible idea. If the Idol gets to pick two songs, they can craft a story. They can feature two aspects of themselves. Who they will be as artists. When the producer picks a song, not only do they have to jump that hurdle, but they also have to pick their one song choice in reaction to that producer’s choice (can’t have anything too similar).

My one hope is that the order posted is the order in which they will be performed (i.e. coronation song first and out of the way). If they want to sandbag one of the contestants, they can let one sing the coronation song in the first round and the other in the last round (the one not singing it in the last round can sing their own choice).

  • DarkGlamour17

i haven’t commented in here in a while. Basically because I haven’t been watching the show since Aaron left. ANYWAYS! I am sorta kinda in a weird way looking forward to the finale. I just want to see David Archuleta.
Plus I want to see the Simon tribute I wonder of it will be a tearjerker? :(

  • googletot

Diana DeGarmo Guess who is flying out to LA to tell @americanidol about the @HAIRtribe! SURPRISE! Heading to the airport now

  • TylerWV

Maybe Will is going to sing Leave Right NOw as part of Simon’s tribute, hehe.

  • calimari

Glad Blake tweeted that he will not be there. Lord knows we’ve all been on the edge of our seats speculating on that. LOL.

  • uche

I’m really trying to look forward to this finale, but it’s just not clicking. Christina’s an amazing vocalist, but from what I saw of her performance on Oprah, her Idol finale performance will definitely be lacking.
I listened to Enrique Iglesias’ new single, and it’s Godawful. Goodness. Pants on the Ground? Really? I’ll pass. I’m not a fan of Carrie or Kris, but their performances should be good. I love the BeeGees (and I’m 17), but looks like they won’t be performing. But Hall and Oats? Yeesh. It’s like a time warp with these people. Why not bring back David Cook, or even Adam (I get he’s mentored and performed, but Carrie will have performed twice by the end of this season. And he brings viewers, whether they like him or hate him.) Frankly, I don’t care if they appear a million times, as long they are good.
I wonder how US X Factor’s finales will be. If they are smart, they will put more current (but TALENTED aka they can actually sing without autotune)artists on it to appeal to the young generation. Guess we’ll have to wait and see.
I mean, do people really care if an Idol alumappears more than once, even if they are good? Really?

  • Shorty

Don’t know how legit this is, but an Elliott/Taylor duet?

  • Tess

There is not one thing being offered by AI that would make me tune in on Wednesday and waste 2 hours and 7 minutes of my time. Chicago is older than me…and that is as old as dirt, Janet Jackson is nothing more than a $1 a dance performer, the BeeGees aren’t the Brothers Gibb anymore (I still miss Maurice), Joe Cocker and Taylor Hicks just look spastic on stage, I’ve heard Christina’s new song (bleh) like wise with Kris Allen, Enrique is so yesterday, Elliot and Michael Johns were never favorites or mine, and I can view any Country video station and watch Carrie 24/7 (and watching paint dry is more fun though she has a great voice if you don’t have to watch her).

OK…now I have offended everyone. But, less I forget, I would have to watch a dozen boring kids try to bring it to the nokia stage one last time. And, I would have to try and stop myself from gagging every two minutes as Simon is honored for his long and “brilliant” contribution to the Idol legacy.

Both “The Boxer” and “People Get Ready” are not avaiable on iTunes anymore. All the other song by all the idol are! I think we know what this means!

I’m bringing this over from the “What should the IDOLs sing?” thread. I just checked and monkeyman is right….and a sleuth!!!! I think monkeyman has uncovered what Crystal and Lee are singing tonight for contestant’s choice!

  • Kirsten

Diana DeGarmo Guess who is flying out to LA to tell @americanidol about the @HAIRtribe! SURPRISE! Heading to the airport now

They are FINALLY going to let Diana back on the Idol stage? About freakin’ time. She has to have had the worse treatment of any finalist ever.

Maybe Will is going to sing Leave Right NOw as part of Simon’s tribute, hehe.

    LOL

  • Eileen99

Someone I talk to on twitter told me that she heard on the DC Fox station this morning that the vocal coach said Lee & Crystal are getting different coronation songs to sing. Did we know this? On the one hand, this could be good if they are given songs to sing that suit their individual styles and let them shine. On the other, it opens all sorts of manipulation possibilities…

  • abbysee

They are FINALLY going to let Diana back on the Idol stage? About freakin’ time. She has to have had the worse treatment of any finalist ever.

Never understood that at all. Wasn’t a fan, but what did she possibly do to piss tptb off? She was just a kid.

  • bean99

Why not bring back David Cook, or even Adam (I get he’s mentored and performed, but Carrie will have performed twice by the end of this season. And he brings viewers, whether they like him or hate him.)

I wouldn’t object to DC being on the finale because he won but not Adam who’s had way more than enough exposure on Idol this season imo.

I’ll watch no matter who’s on because I want to see this season’s idols. I just hope we see more of them than they did last season. Hopefully they won’t spend any time on the stupid awards since it’s also Simon’s farewell.

  • OhMyRawrrr

I remember Joe Cocker looking old and decrepit when I was a kid. I can’t even imagine what he looks like now :0

  • Kirsten

Intriguing! I don’t remember them doing that for MW and ANS last year, though. I’m not sure what pulling the song does for them unless they are planning on releasing an updated studio version. Great sleuthing!

“People Get Ready” is a good choice. “The Boxer” is not. Why? Well, because everybody remembers “The Boxer” as his finest moment (if you ignore the “MOMENT!!!11!!!” the producers created last week which I do) and you can never go home. It will never sound as good as the first time (because you have lost the element of surprise and moments only get better in our memories). Pick your second or third best moment (whichever you think you can do better than the first time). That way, you leave people remembering the moment on the finale and your biggest moment. “People Get Ready” was a bit of a moment for Crystal, but it wasn’t her best moment. Of course, YMMV. Plus, I’m biased.

Although, I will grant that “The Boxer” is a good choice if Lee is buying into the “just a weary paint seller dude” story arc that the producers have crafted for him because it totally fits that story (though, that’s probably why we haven’t forgotten that performance).

    X Factor’s finales

It’s quite similar. From last year’s british X Factor:

    Week 10 (12/13 December – Final)

Saturday night – TOP 3 perform

    * Themes: Audition song, celebrity duet, mentor’s favourite performance from the competition[57]
    * Celebrity performers: Robbie Williams (“You Know Me”)
    * Celebrities performing duets: Michael Bublé, Robbie Williams, George Michael[57]

The contestant that received the fewest votes on Saturday was eliminated at the end of the show, coming third in the competition.

Sunday night – TOP 2 perform

    * Theme: Contestant’s favourite, winner’s song (“The Climb”, originally by Miley Cyrus)
    * Celebrity guests: Alexandra Burke and JLS (medley of “Bad Boys”/”Everybody in Love”), Leona Lewis (“Stop Crying Your Heart Out”), George Michael (“December Song”), Paul McCartney (“Drive My Car”, “Live and Let Die” and “(I Want To) Come Home”)[58]
    * Group performance: “Never Forget” (Take That, performed by all 12 finalists)

  • Suzanne

Enrique Iglesias will be appearing on Wednesday’s finale to perform their new singles.

What hand is washing the other for that?? Enrique Iglesias? He’s on Interscope Records (which has awesome artists, btw–if I were a singer I’d want to be on that label), but it doesn’t seem related to 19 or Sony. Maybe he’s more popular than I thought?

  • geekygirl

Maybe Will is going to sing Leave Right NOw as part of Simon’s tribute, hehe.

Will Young!!!!! Squuuueeee!!!! Love him, love his voice, love this song. This would be particularly funny as he was NOT Simon’s pick to win, and Simon pimped the other finalist like crazy. Ahh there is ironic justice.

  • Suzanne

I wouldn’t object to DC being on the finale because he won but not Adam

Adam tweeted a week or 10 days ago that he’s not on the finale. I think most people think that DC IS going to be on the finale (as will DA). They’re both in LA for something secret right now.

  • Suzanne

I remember Joe Cocker looking old and decrepit when I was a kid. I can’t even imagine what he looks like now :0

Dream of all dreams–I want to see Joe Cocker on the same stage as Taylor Hicks. Could make Taylor look young again? Duel of the spazzes on body language tho.

  • Daytripper73

Hell will truly be freezing over if they let Diana anywhere near the stage. I’m guessing she’ll just be attending and doing press. I hope I’m wrong and instead she is included in whatever the other former contestants are doing.

  • Suzanne

On the one hand, this could be good if they are given songs to sing that suit their individual styles and let them shine. On the other, it opens all sorts of manipulation possibilities…

I think what it means is that both singles will be released and they want both artists to have a hit with their individual coronation songs, regardless of who wins. (Like Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard did.) Frankly, I never understood the years when they had both finalist sing one song–Seasons 1, 3?, 4, 6, and 8. Generally shafted the second place finisher. (Of course, both got shafted in S8 with that horrific song. I mean “boundries” isn’t even a word.)

  • frogcooke

They’re both in LA for something secret right now.

    SEKRIT!

  • calimari

I thought Lee did a fair job on “The Boxer”, but far too many “la la las” in there. He needs to do more of the verses w/ actual lyrics & less of the “la la las”.

  • cheese

If they’re letting Taylor back on the stage, I wonder if that means they’re collecting as many winners as possible? Doesn’t Simon secretly want to see that Cook/Carrie duet?

I think I’m most looking forward to the coronation songs. Two songs = twice as much fun counting cliches! Yay! I think Crystal will have “dreams” and Lee will have “believe” and maybe one natural disaster each. Whoever gets the rainbow wins.

  • http://www.myspace.com/gwendolyndiane GwendolynD

I actually can’t find any Inspirational Week iTunes from any of the contestants.

  • Suzanne

Never understood that at all. Wasn’t a fan, but what did she possibly do to piss tptb off? She was just a kid.

I never got the impression that anyone is mad at her. Season 3 was a weak season–frankly, the entire top, what?, seven?, were all kids except for Latoya London. Jennifer Hudson had a breakout movie role and matured A LOT after being on the show, but she wasn’t that great while in competition (uncontrolled blasting voice). Diana Degarmo had a few good performances but rose to the top because she didn’t crash and burn in any of the weeks. She didn’t have outstanding performances.

Now, all that said, she’s coming along nicely building a career for herself that has been separate from American Idol, which has been excellent. I think the show is having her on because she’s done some notable things (been in two hits on Broadway) since graduating from the show and they see that it’s worthwhile for both of them to promote her. You don’t see AI having on LaToya London, who is a better singer than Diana Degarmo, because LaToya is virtually invisible out there in the performance world.

  • https://twitter.com/pmhowden undercooked

They really should have all the winners and runner ups on. Even if it is one massive group number ala “You (Simon) are the World.”

Blake should be on there as well as Adam. Not sure who’s putting this list together, but it doesn’t make sense to leave anyone off if they are doing a tribute to Simon.

  • Tess

I wouldn’t object to DC being on the finale because he won but not Adam

Idoldom is interesting….it is a matter of hand selecting who is appropriate to be on the finale. Lets see: Diane D. (runner-up), Elliot (3rd place finisher), Michael Johns (7th place, or was it ninth)…Clay has been on the finale. C’mn what’s good for the goose is good for the Gander.

For me…I still can’t get over the fact that AI thinks it has to go outside their stable to get talent to perform on finals night. The whole premise of the show is to find that bright new talent and now they have 8 years of talent that is out and about in the real world. I would even put up with watching the final (live/delayed) if the guests were past contestants who had measured up in the real world. And I’m not just talking winners here….I might not find all 80 of the past top tens entertaining…but I would find them more appealing then Janet or Joe or Mellissa or Enrieque or Barry or Robin or even Hall and Oats…even Christina is pretty blah for me (at least with her “new” style).

  • justshootme

None of this has me psyched. None. Of. It.

It would have been nice if they they’d just put out a blanket invite to the top 4 or 5 from each season and filled the stage for some kinda Simon tribute. I’d have been down for that. If this is just TPTB picking … I was gonna say their “favorites” but then how did Taylor and Diana make the cut? Bizarre.

Somebody’s shelling out big bucks to make Enrique’s new single “happen”. Janet Jackson and Xtina are all ego, just so unlikeable at this point. I thought half these other guests were already dead. Ugh. Did I mention I was Not Psyched?

  • abbysee

I think the show is having her on because she’s done some notable things (been in two hits on Broadway) since graduating from the show and they see that it’s worthwhile for both of them to promote her.

That explains why she’s going to be on now, not why she wasn’t in seasons 4-8. The runner up is almost always invited back the next season to promote their cd. I think there was a reason that she was not.

  • hicksaholic

I’m so excited about the possibility of a Taylor/Elliott duet but I have trouble really believing it. AI has never been supportive of Taylor, don’t know why they would start now with such a high profile show. Here’s hoping though.

  • Kirsten

Frankly, I never understood the years when they had both finalist sing one song–Seasons 1, 3?, 4, 6, and 8.

Season 3 was one of those rare “two coronation song” years. Both finalists had to sing both coronation songs, but one was released as the primary single for each of them (although, they both released both songs for a total of 3 on their EP).

Season 1 also featured two coronation songs, but Kelly released both of them (with “A Moment Like This” being the primary one). Back then, there were clauses to hamper the runner-up from competing much with the winner.

Season 7 had the even rarer “Pick one of the songs from the pile of crap songs we put out as a coronation song and the voters have already decided sucks AND then we’ll surprise the world with the real coronation song on the finale” (but it did give Cookie and Archie a chance to pick a song that might actually work for them and not have side-by-side comparisons).

I still feel kind of sorry for Blake watching him bounce along to the coronation song with the expression on his face “Yah, I know I’m not going to win either”.

The producers can manipulate the hell out of the coronation songs no matter what route they take. If they sing different songs, just give the non-chosen one horrible dreck outside of their range while TCO gets a song suited to them. If they sing the same songs, just have that one song be in the wheelhouse of only one of the contestatns (and don’t let them re-arrange it). And then you get years like S8 when the coronation song seem designed to sandbag both contestants. So, maybe TPTB really are just that stupid and they aren’t manipulating anything.

Hmm, well considering how heavy the manipulations have been the last few weeks, I’m more than a little wary to hear this news. I just hope Lee doesn’t get the full “childrens chorus, while holding a puppy and a baby on stage” treatment, with poor Crystal left with some treacle that makes NoBo sound like Handel’s Messiah.

I liked what they did S7 the best – letting the David’s pick what they wanted to sing from a group of all the song-writing finalist picks. This year, I’m afraid tptb will just hand them the song to do.

  • https://twitter.com/pmhowden undercooked

For me…I still can’t get over the fact that AI thinks it has to go outside their stable to get talent to perform on finals night.

ITA- Blake’s got a hit dance single and I know I would enjoy watching him perform that. I would also love to see Adam do IIHY. Not sure how much more relevant we can get than that. AT least we have Kris performing his new single and it sounds like Carrie is too. So we have that to look forward to. XTINA, whether her single is good or bad, is performing new material. What is Janet going to sing?

  • bridgette12

Michael Johns, Elliot, Taylor, Joe Cocker, Janet Jackson, Enrique Bee Gees, Hall&Oates, DiGarmo all have one thing in common, they either haven’t had a hit song, or had one ten, twenty maybe thirty years ago.
Carrie certainly should be on the show, but watching her is like watching paint dry. It’s pretty going on but after a while you get sick of looking at it. Bring on some rock performances. You have Daughtry, Cook, Adam all on 19Entertainment payroll, why don’t they get those guys there. Hey I would take Nickelback or Train at this point. Anyone to bring some life to these homage to Simon Cowell. What about Kings of Leon, those guys give great live performances. They can get someone from RCA or JIVE Records to bring some life to this finale.

  • mmb

I’m sure everyone is waiting with baited breath to hear Will Young sing the unforgettable Leave Right Now

Elliott had a massive hit song in 2007.

I agree and I would watch that too. (It’s exciting to see how some of the people have flourished since competing.) But I think the finale premise is to pair the best contestants with famous artists to perpetuate the Cinderella/Cinderfella stories that are American Idol.

  • Mary102

Blake should be on there as well as Adam. Not sure who’s putting this list together, but it doesn’t make sense to leave anyone off if they are doing a tribute to Simon.

Yeah, IDK. The list of people they have on does seem rather random. No offense, but really with some of these picks? Diana Degarmo, Michael Johns (much as I enjoyed him S7)?

And I agree that having more previous idols is better than most of the pop stars and has-beens who usually populate the stage. Although I will admit that a lot of awesome moments have come in the past from the unique pairings – especially when it’s been an older, classic singer, paired with a current contender.

Allison and Cyndi Lauper were awesome last year.
I remember enjoying David Cook with ZZ Top too.
And of course last year with Queen was just epic win.

  • Suzanne

Elliott had a massive hit song in 2007.

Kirsten is such a fact checker!

enrique has a new song out that is doing pretty darn well on the top 40 charts, and his picture is on the front page of many large clear channel websites….so i would not include him in that group…i’m not an Enrique fan, but just sayin…

  • Niall

I’m rooting for lil Diana to finally be recognized somehow. The show should be proud of her. She’s proven to have more star potential than their once beloved Latoya, and a major Broadway career launched via AI is nothing to frown upon. Let bygones be bygones and at least acknowledge she exists.

  • abbysee

I think that as many of the top tens from all years should be there to celebrate Simon’s departure. I don’t watch idol for the celebrity performers. But give me a former idol, even one that I may not have loved in seasons past I get a bit giddy because for what it’s worth they are hugely more entertaining. I wanna see Bo Bice, Tamyra Grey, Anoop Desai. I might have loved the Bee Gees (guilty pleasure), or Chicago (I played Color My World more times than I care to admit) in my youth, but seriously, I like to remember them as they were, not the vestige of their formers selves. This year especially should end on the up note of what they show is all about. Plucking Kelly, Ruben and Clay, Fantasia and Jennifer, Carrie and Bo, Taylor and Daughtry, Jordin and Blake, Cook and Archuleta, Kris and Adam out of relative obscurity and giving them this incredible shot. Hell, it’s inspirational. I wanna see my idols.

  • Mary102

And Lee singing The Boxer? Yeah, that makes sense to me. I think it’s a good pick for him because it fits the whole “toiling everyman” story that is pretty much his ticket to the title at this point. I really don’t remember it being THAT huge a moment earlier in the season to risk not being able to match up to it again, whereas I DO think that was an issue last year with Adam singing MW again – just too hard to recreate that perfect, magical moment.

I’d have picked Bobby McGee for Crystal to sing. It was really energetic, fun, fit her so perfectly – that would have been a great choice!

  • Suzanne

You know what–with all the people on–I bet we see our old idols on for one 5-minute group performance and maybe they each get a two-measure solo. It’ll be great to see the old kids (and it is weird that the ex-Idols who will be on don’t seem picked for how well they did in the competition), but I bet that they are on for that Simon tribute and that’s it. The only past Idols that will have a spotlight for more than under a minute will be Kris and the queen of AI, Carrie Underwood.

Oh–and I haven’t seen in this discussion anything about Carly. Thought for sure I read yesterday that she’ll be in that group song too.

  • https://twitter.com/pmhowden undercooked

They really should do a medley of songs from idols who have been on Broadway. We have Ace and Diana from Hair, Constantine from Rock of Ages, Clay from Spamalot and Taylor from Grease. I know I’m missing some folks. Someone was also in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Seriously, they could have been working on that all year and it would be awesome.

  • songsungblue

Eh. Simon’s already told People magazine that Lee will win since he “needs the break.” [I guess the insulin dependent single mother from rural Ohio doesn't need the break at all, does she?]

Simon will declare Lee “Lord of All the Heaven” no matter what he sings.

It’s all over but the confetti.

  • weese

I am happy they are bringing back former Idols who could really use the exposure. Adam had a huge chunk of time this season. Daughtry, Carrie, Kelly, J-Hud just don’t need this stage any more. The rest do. (Haven’t heard anything about Pickler-one of Simon’s favorites).

It’s all over but the confetti.

So it will be another two idols for the price of one year? If Lee wins, Crystal will be co-winner. If Crystal wins, Lee will be a pip to her Gladys Knight. He needs to win to be relevant. She doesn’t. I think I get the script for tonight. Let’s see if it plays out as such.

For me…I still can’t get over the fact that AI thinks it has to go outside their stable to get talent to perform on finals night. The whole premise of the show is to find that bright new talent and now they have 8 years of talent that is out and about in the real world.

Tess I totally agree. Eight years of talent and they have to pull people out of the retirement home to be on this show. Putting artist on that their glory years were sometimes decades ago is crazy. I don’t mind if they pay homage to the past, but why don’t you use Idols to do the singing in a short montage. They could have had a all-star show with Kelly, Daughtry, Cook, Carrie, Adam, Archuleta, Kris, Jordin and Melinda. Different people, different styles and all can sing. They could do some duets and make this a show of a lifetime. Instead we are getting bad season 9 duets, retirees, desperate singers looking for attention and a love fest for Simon. The cherry on top of this would be one of those awful “we are the world” type songs at the end of the show. Everybody could be on stage with guitars and harmonicas, singing some type of folksong from the 60′s with confetti falling and balloons popping.

  • LaurelG

Michael Johns, Elliot, Taylor, Joe Cocker, Janet Jackson, Enrique Bee Gees, Hall&Oates, DiGarmo all have one thing in common, they either haven’t had a hit song, or had one ten, twenty maybe thirty years ago.

Random choices doesn’t even begin to cover it. My god, it’s like they’re giving Simon a giant middle finger for a send-off! yikes.

I’m sure everyone is waiting with baited breath to hear Will Young sing the unforgettable Leave Right Now

At least he’s a decent singer which is more than can be said for some who will be there.

MJ: Do you know anything about the rumor that Siohban Magnus’ favorite band Hanson has suddenly changed their tour schedule to be in LA on Finale night, supposedly to be on the Tonight Show?

  • will

Wouldn’t Will Young’s appearance be the first time they’ve ever had a guest sing on a Tuesday performance show? Not only does the “boot song” make no sense on Tuesday, but I think it’s highly disrespectful to bring a guest in to sing on Lee and Crystal’s big night.

@WQAL “Rehearsals going on… The Boys are practicing a rendition of “Pants on the Ground!!!”

    Oh Lord.

  • Trina

Simon is telling everyone Lee will win doesnt mean he will. I don’t think Simon is capable of being subjective when it comes to Lee.

Doesn’t Simon secretly want to see that Cook/Carrie duet?

I dont know about a duet but hell hes probably still wishing for that Billie Jean reprive lol

The list of former Idols is just…weird. DC and Adam both performed already so I dont feel they are being slighted by not performing but the list is just odd.

well then simons been wrong 2 years in a row lets make it 3 CRYSTAL FOR THE MFW!!!

He was wrong last year in the press, but the year before he was telling all the media DC would win, he didnt switch to Archie until after all the performances. Then in typical Simon fashion he changed back to DC on the red carpet after he saw the votes.

Wouldn’t Will Young’s appearance be the first time they’ve ever had a guest sing on a Tuesday performance show?

I think the guy that sang Bad Day sang on a Tuesday. But all the Idol/boot song singers sang as well.

Can’t they at least get Bruce Springsteen to sing with Off-key Lee? And I. can’t. wait. for Elliot and Taylor. Bring all the old idols back you can find – a big ol’ idol reunion. Sounds like a summer special, huh? I’m all over that!

I bet that they have video messages all throughout the telecast before throwing to commercial break of former mentors, performers, idols, random famous people, wishing simon well….i suspect that DC and AL each taped video messages when then appeared this season

The list of former idols seems random because they are probably calling back as many as they can to give a goodbye to Simon.
It will be great if we see like 50 of them on stage singing.

ap photos of david a performing at the elevate lounge in la last night, as part of the pre-finale festivities… brooke white, kristy lee cook, scott mcintyre, taylor hicks, bo bice were in attendance… david sang several songs, and rumors are he sang a new song, perhaps from the upcoming cd – richard rushfield was there and tweeted about it, thought no video has surfaced – dang, lol… he’ll be at the finale – no confirmation/word/rumor if he’s included in the tribute to simon…

I believe they started that back in S5 when they had Daniel Powter on to sing “Bad Day”. Daughtry, Ruben and Carrie also sang their boot songs on the finale night. There is a montage of the year playing behind them.

    Here is How It’s Done

  • jpfan

Michael Johns, Elliot, Taylor, Joe Cocker, Janet Jackson, Enrique Bee Gees, Hall&Oates, DiGarmo all have one thing in common, they either haven’t had a hit song, or had one ten, twenty maybe thirty years ago.

Elliott had a very big AC//Top 40 hit with Wait for You the summer of 2007 (so that’s three years ago). The song went platinum and the album went gold in Japan the following summer. I know how important those international stats are these days. :)

Enrique has a Pop song (w/Pitbull) that’s climbing up the charts as we speak. As for the rest, even a chart follower like me knows it’s not all about transitory Pop hits. Sometimes having a 20-30 year old career is a good thing all on its own.

  • ggdoorsfan

Elliott had a massive hit song in 2007.

Kirsten is such a fact checker!

that she is – and if you’ve watched more than a season or 2 of idol, this also would be common knowledge… ‘wait for you’ was a smash for elliott, and i hope he finds a way to have another, and another….

  • sma11ie

I think most people think that DC IS going to be on the finale (as will DA). They’re both in LA for something secret right now.

I hear Archie will be at the finale, but Cook is in LA because he lives in LA right now… there’s definitely been no indication he’ll be at the finally.

I hope the “contestant’s choice” wording rather than “contestant’s favorite” or “contestants’ reprise” means we’ll get new songs. I don’t like reprises. I think Kris lucked out with ANS but you rarely match the magic of the first time.

  • TwigLA

For what it’s worth, I’m looking forward to both tonight and the Finale. I also don’t think this season was as bad as everyone makes it out to be and there were some real talents we were introduced to. I found something to like in every one of them.

I’m hoping this year we have a good coronation song that suits both finalists. I know that is next to impossible, but I’d like to see it.

None of the celebrity artists this year can top last year’s ‘Tales From the Crypt’ Rod Stewart. THat had to be the most serious WTF AI Finale Moment in History. Particularly since he refused to have any of the Idols perform with him.

The best, hands down, celebrity moment was when they brought Prince on.

I’m looking forward to Joe Cocker being on. I doubt I’ll be able to keep my mental image of John Belushi’s impersonation of him out of my head. SNL classic gold! For the song, I want ‘With a Little Help From My Friends’ for Joe, Crystal, and Lee.

  • EmmaCT

Guilty admittance: The finale – first time I’ve looked forward to “Idol” this season. Hoping for a non-fabricated “moment”…

  • Suzanne

No. I don’t know if they do it every year, but Ruben did this in S7 and Carrie did it in S8.

Ever since Season 5 they’ve had the boot song performed live as the last performance of the Tuesday night competition show, and usually with a video montage of the season in the background.

S5–Bad day, S6–Home (Daughtry), S7–Celebrate Me Home, S8–Home Sweet Home.

I’m glad that after S5 they figured out that they could in-breed with using their own stable of singers.

If Lee and Crystal are smart, they’d write a song about “going home” for their albums.

Darn it I missed Elliot’s international stardom, it was so brief. I will be on pin and needles for the next hit.

As for Enrique I didn’t realize had been in show business that long, 20 to thirty years is a long time for someone his age. Just hanging on to the edges of music business is better than nothing at all.

  • jpfan

Darn it I missed Elliot’s international stardom, it was so brief. I will be on pin and needles for the next hit.

Well as I said until fairly recently most fans didn’t follow international sales that closely. ;) But yes Elliott did very well in Japan with the first album. The second is a whole other story. Jordin Sparks also did very well internationally but again not a whole lot of folks were paying attention.

Enrique does have a song rising on the Pop charts. And obviously I wasn’t referring to him when I was referring to long careers.

  • standtotheright

    So…I finally heard “Woohoo.”

I may have to tune in just to see the PTC server farm go up in flames.

(Also, between this and IMH, I have to conclude that Claude Kelly is a very…attentive boyfriend. Heh.)

  • lorismile

I never heard of this song.

Nothing could beat Allison shoving Danny during School’s Out with Slash performing. I can’t imagine this group singing that song.

  • jpfan

Wait for You hit #3 on the Top 40 and AC chart both.
It was one of the most played songs that year on the radio.
I think it was included in the top 10 for airplay in 2007 (but I could be wrong).

Wait for You was even included on a Kidz Bop album. :)

But obviously having a current hit on the Top 40 chart is not the criteria for Idols returning for the Idol finale. Maybe the producers will explain their choices in an interview. Or we’ll know when we watch the show.

  • ggdoorsfan

I never heard of this song.

awwwww… it was everywhere, and elliott even came back on idol to sing it – that’s when it really exploded… elliott has challenges as an indie label artist, but one thing they can’t take away from him, and many people will sing for years and never have … a bona fide monster hit on his resume…

those rushfield tweets from the elevate lounge last night during david’s performance – and the ‘new’ song

Gee–I hope that David A isn’t in LA just to perform at the before party. Now wondering if he’ll be on stage for the Finale?

You know, Brooke White, KLCook, Jason Castro, Scott MacIntyre, and Taylor Hicks are all in the pictures from the party last night. If all the past idols in LA are going to be in that salute to Simon thing, it’s going to be a crowded stage.

  • justshootme

By the by, why are they doing “School’s Out For Summer” again this year, when they just did it last year (granted, not in the finale)? All season long, my mantra has been “No repeats. Songs from this century.” and all season, they have let me down. Way to be consistent to the bitter end AI.

Lee’s “The Boxer” and Crystal’s “People Get Ready” are no longer available on iTunes. So, I guess we can assume those are their “contestants choice” songs. I’m not suprised. I would have chosen “The Boxer” for Lee and either that or “Bobby McGee” for Crystal.

  • LoveContinuum

Seriously, there are people who never heard “Wait For You?…

    Never heard of it.

Will Young was the first contestant to put Simon in his place… and receive a full apology from Lord Cowell the next week. He also confirmed he was gay within a week of winning. But then, that sort of thing is no big deal outside the States.

Lol, saying you never heard of Wait For You doesn’t mean it wasn’t a monster smash, because it without a doubt was. Also, Janet Jackson had a number 1 r&b/hip hop hit in 2006 with Call on Me, so that is another artist who had a hit within the last ten years lol….

  • LoveContinuum

Thanks Mateja. I wish we could see what a telling off it was though. I remember Will saying, “No. Wait. You’ve had your say Simon, now it’s my turn. We come here to sing and compete. We don’t come here to be disrespected by you.” Or something along those lines. Simon’s face was classic! And the rest of the contestants in the green room nearly collapsed with laughter.

I swear Idol producers since Lithgoe left couldn’t pick the winner of a one horse race. Why keep secrets about who is on the finale when there are fans who would tune in specifically to see certain people on there? The final competition would be way better with an original song from the contestants since they are both songwriters. There is no crime in being flexible each year to keep the show fresh. The show this year has had decent talent but it has been produced like stale crackers….soft, crumbly and with an off taste.

Will Young!!!!! Squuuueeee!!!! Love him, love his voice, love this song. This would be particularly funny as he was NOT Simon’s pick to win, and Simon pimped the other finalist like crazy. Ahh there is ironic justice.

I’ve watched every season since season 1 – and I didn’t know Elliott had a massive hit. Never heard him on my y-100 miami (#12 pop station). He could very well have been played – but it never registered for me. The AI alumni I’ve heard played here are Kelly & Carrie of course, David Archuleta, Jordin Sparks, Adam Lambert and Kris Allen. I would say Kelly, Carrie and Jordan the most.
So I think a lot of the awareness has to do with where you live and what your stations are playing.

Oh shit – I just clicked on the Elliott you tube link – I TOTALLY know this song but had NO IDEA this was Elliott. What an awesome voice!!

Yeah, I didn’t watch Idol S5, though it was big enough a pop culture phenomenon that season that I was aware of the top finishers. (I remember a friend griping about this Chris Daughtry guy getting booted early. And later seeing clips of Taylor and wondering why he was so spastic.)

Anywhoo, point is, I was only vaguely aware of Elliott, but that song was everywhere. Like most radio hits, I recognize the song but don’t bother finding out who sings it. The only reason I associated that song with Elliott was because I remember watching I think VH1 video countdown, and they had an interview with Elliott and talked about the video making #1, mentioned Idol, etc. I remember being impressed that an Idol non-winner did so well with his song, not even realizing at the time that it was an indie release, which makes it even more impressive. I never saw Elliott perform this on Idol, though, since I only saw like 5 total episodes of S6.

I don’t think the age matters as much as how fit you are. Tina Turner was still cooking even in her 60s. Joe Cocker may be in great shape, who knows.

I don’t think it matters either. It’s just that Joe’s age was mentioned and Queen’s was not, so I just thought I’d mention it. They both had their heydays back around the same time, so it’s not surprising they are about the same age.

Joe is very respected in the biz, too.

ou have Daughtry, Cook, Adam all on 19Entertainment payroll, why don’t they get those guys there.

They’ve already been on AI this year – happy to see some others fially getting a chance, although I’m sick of seeing Carrie on every award show and finale

I think of Carrie in terms as being the grand matriarch of a huge, crazy family, who makes everyone feel comfortable and pulls snickerdoodles out of her bag to feed the kids. Carrie is going to be there, even if nobody else is there. She’s thankful for the opportunity Idol gave her and at the end of the day, she is a great ambassador for the show. No she’s not my cup of tea and yes she bores me, but she’s a Superstar in the country genre and is a gold mine when selling her music.

Think they should have Adam come on and sing “Can’t Let You Go” to Simon.

I would freaking die. I love that song so much!

Ditto. I would do anything (yeah, pretty much anything) to hear him sing that live. But I don’t think it’ll happen. Those notes are just too off-the-charts to sing live. If he sang that on the finale, it would seriously be the end of Idol. Nothing could top that.

  • LeeTravers

Speaking of duets – would have preferred Lee and Crystal sing “This Is Us” (Knopfler/Harris) rather than that insipid ditty from “Once.” Would have really suited them well.

  • J9BT

I was searching for Crystal Bowersox info on Twitter and saw this from a couple of people – not sure if it’s true or not, but sounds cool!

“MaineFarmMan Word is that Crystal Bowersox is going to perform a duet with the late Janis Joplin in a super 3-D presentation on stage! “

LOL! If they can do it on major music awards shows with Nat King Cole, Elvis & Michael Jackson, why not with Janis Joplin on IDOL?

It certainly might create the “moment” they’ve been looking for this season! Although I agree it’s likely a false rumor.

Very excited about the Taylor, Elliot duet! Maybe it’s the only way TPTB would have Taylor back on (j/k – kind of).

Taylor was on last season, sang “Seven Mile Breakdown” and Simon gave him a standing ovation. So, I think Idol has thrown a lot of sh!t at Taylor over the years, but I thought that was nice.

  • cheese

Don’t we usually have some leaks about the coronation songs by the time they sing them? I can’t remember if we knew about “No Boundaries” last year or whether they just dropped the Kara bomb on us right before Kris and Adam attempted to sing that mess.

I’m choosing to believe that Cook will at least be there on the red carpet or something. They’re not going to fly in Taylor and Diana and leave David at home with his dog. I think all the winners should sing “My Life Would Suck Without You” to Simon and his ego.

  • cookcricket

As cheesy as a MamaSox/Joplin duet sounds, I wanna hear it!!

Oh shit – I just clicked on the Elliott you tube link – I TOTALLY know this song but had NO IDEA this was Elliott. What an awesome voice!! :D Does anyone know what he’s singing on the finale?

Poor Elliott. Awful that so many people *do* know the song but have no idea he sings it!

My guess for what he does on the final: Stand with 28 other Idol alums all singing For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow to Sir Simon.

    Seriously.

Clues for Lee’s songs (this spoiler has never been wrong):

Song #1: “He is going to be put into a rink and fight it out or he doesn’t have to think outside the box for this song”
Song #2: “Everybody might hurt after this song.”
Song #3: “He might have an awful day.”
“The third song they are both singing. However it was not a song just written for them. It did play a big part in American Idols past.”

    The Boxer
    Everybody Hurts by REM
    Bad Day by Daniel Powter

  • jersey

LOL, cheese. “My Life Would Suck Without You” would be perfect!

ETA: If that spoiler is correct, then Daniel Powter must be thrilled! He can sell another bajillion copies of “Bad Day”.

  • Kirsten

Song #3: “He might have an awful day.”

Wouldn’t this fit with the Beautiful Day spoilers we’ve been hearing?

Song #1: “He is going to be put into a rink and fight it out or he doesn’t have to think outside the box for this song”

Is rink supposed to be ring? If so, definintely the Boxer. If not, maybe it’s something from “Five for Fighting” (he got the name from what they say when somebody gets a penalty in hockey for fighting). I could see Lee being able to handle something by FfF. Although, the falsetto might give him some trouble. Maybe that Superman song?

But, it’s probably just a typo and is “The Boxer” since Lee likes it so (and it was a good song for him and it fits his story arc).

  • cookcricket

    The Boxer

Song #3: “He might have an awful day.”

Wouldn’t this fit with the Beautiful Day spoilers we’ve been hearing.

I would love that over Bad Day… but this clue about a big part in AI past doesn’t fit Beautiful Day… unless I’m mussing something?

  • Kirsten

“The third song they are both singing. However it was not a song just written for them. It did play a big part in American Idols past.”

Hmm…that definitely sounds like it could be “Bad Day” although, “Beautiful Day” fits too because it was the song from the World Idol winner.

“Beautiful Day” would tend to favour Lee and “Bad Day” would tend to favour Crystal (IMO). Terribly meta to pick “Bad Day”. And totally just asking to get booted (which, if they both have to sing it will cancel everything out).

I love that song, and there’ve been so many times I’ve blasted this song in my car envisioning an imaginary Cook-Clarkson duet on it, cuz I’ve said it before, but I think DC’s voice is actually best in the pop-rock vein. As an aside, this is why I’m actually wishing that Max Martin collab rumor for David is true…

Tell that to some of his fans on Twitter. I’m serious,I was nearly choking on my coffee reading some of the OTTness of it all. Did you know hes banned from the finale because 19 hates him and its obvious everything with RCA is downhill??

  • Suzanne

Why wouldn’t they want Idols signed by 19? They are a commercial enterprise. They can be (and so royally are) self-serving. This is not the American way.

  • standtotheright

sma11ie, I love you, KC, DC, and plenty of pop-rock, but if you seriously want me to swallow a MLWSWY from Cook, we are gonna have words. It was a warmed-over Breakaway reject that showed up five years too late, and not even Miss Kelly could make me love it.

As a sarcastic send-off to Cowell, though, I’d take it.

Did you know hes banned from the finale because 19 hates him and its obvious everything with RCA is downhill??

As a producer, I always invite the people I hate to perform and host segments on my nationally televised programs just so that I can crush their spirits by rescinding their invitation to the finale.

And as a record label, I always force my artists to stay away from public events because I want to watch them spin in circles, and not because I could possibly envision having something related to album production for them to do.

2nd Update: AINow.com is reporting that there will be a tribute performance featuring Idols on Wednesday, but it will only include Idols not signed by 19

Well, if that’s true, then there’s the Taylor Hicks, Elliott Yamin, Melinda Doolittle, Michael Johns, etc., appearance.

This sounds pretty strange to me, though, I must say….. I mean, Will they introduce them by saying — Hey, listen to all the great voices that Simon and his comrades totally passed on as being incapable of earning money? Or what — Hey, look, even though Simon and the show seem to love throwbacks, based on the other guests they invite to these finales, they really threw *this* group of throwbacks under the bus! ???

  • standtotheright

I can’t believe that they’d actually be this petty, but maybe 19 is refusing to let it be their own artists out of pique?

“Push a SyCo series in the US, don’t get the advantage of our artists waving you off.”

Not really a spanking that would sting him, but what other reason could there be?

  • sma11ie

sma11ie, I love you, KC, DC, and plenty of pop-rock, but if you seriously want me to swallow a MLWSWY from Cook, we are gonna have words. It was a warmed-over Breakaway reject that showed up five years too late, and not even Miss Kelly could make me love it.

LOL, I unabashedly love that song purely because it’s so reminiscent of songs on Breakway. I flove it, blare it in the car with the windows down, and scream along with the “my life- MY LIFE, would suck- WOULD SUCK without you’s” like I screamed along with the SINCE U BEEN GOOOONE’S back in the day. I miss when pop radio was chock full of songs like this and not all dance-pop or rap. And MLWSWY is bottom line a cute song with cute lyrics, and wouldn’t it be adorable as a duet? Hee. I’m weird.

The non-19 Idols tweet is odd.

I don’t follow the ins and outs 19 entertainment, etc. so sorry in advance for asking some dumb questions.

Who owns 19? Is it Simon Fuller? I recall reading (could be wrong) that he really isn’t involved with the American Idol TV Show? If that is true, will he be involved with the US X-Factor?
Is there a possibility that there is some sort of rule about peforming on AI and X-Factor within a certain time frame and this could be a factor because they want some of these 19 artists to perform on X-Factor?

I’m just thinking out loud, but that 19 tweet raises some questions.

  • Trina

Jesus Simon Fuller is a bastard! That just reeks of the ultimate control.

  • frogcooke

The whole non-19 thing is sketch…. if you ask me.

  • standtotheright

But Fuller left 19 as well, right? So it’s the new guy, Robert Dodds, making the call, no?

  • https://twitter.com/pmhowden undercooked

Ok here’s the wiki stuff on 19

In March 2005, 19 Entertainment founder Simon Fuller sold the group to Robert Sillerman’s CKX, Inc. in a cash and stock deal worth £100 million ($192 million). Fuller remained in his role as CEO and became a director of CKX, effectively co-ordinating all creative aspects of the CKX business until January 2010 when at coming to the end of his employment contract with CKX, Inc., he decided to start up a new business, XIX Entertainment, while still acting as an consultant to CKX / 19 and as an Executive Producer of 19′s shows.
