American Idol 9 Top 11 Theme – Teen Idol Week
UPDATE: Check out the press release:
On Tuesday, March 23 (8:00-10:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed), the Top 11 finalists (Didi Benami, Crystal Bowersox, Lee Dewyze, Andrew Garcia, Casey James, Aaron Kelly, Michael Lynche, Siobhan Magnus, Paige Miles, Katie Stevens and Tim Urban) return to the IDOL stage to perform in a Teen Idols-themed week.
iTunes will have a list of songs up soon that will give us a better idea of what the theme is about.
Somebody from AINow.org just tweeted that next week the Top 11 Idols will be singing songs from Teen Idols.
Don’t ask me what that means, because I have no idea.
When I get more information, I’ll post it here.
PS: If this is really the theme, it’s a really stupid idea.

THIS. All I can say to this is OH BOY and not in a good way!
Of course! But do you remember the movie, “Sooner or Later”? Now that’s a classic.
Nothing can top Rex’s hair, I think Tim has more of a Donny Osmond in his heyday hairstyle.
Would it be too bold for Andrew to take on Ritchie Valens? What about Ricky Nelson? Elvis would be a major challenge for the guys. I suppose anyone could do a Taylor Swift or Justin Bieber song and sound better, but different?
Siobhan doing Lesley Gore’s, “You Don’t Own Me” would be too obvious, but what a great song that is.
I’m betting on a stripped down, acoustic version of “Ooops I Did It Again.”
O.M.A I FLOOOOOVE THIS IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bestest.theme.everrrrrr
Sadly I think they’ll do old idols
be CURRENT.if you sing bieber, I don’t care how bad you are, you’ll have his fanbase behing u and u garunteed to win!!!
GREAT GREAT GRET GREAT THEME!!!!!!
I wanna hear some t swift.,.
great question! BEATLES were teen idols, esp in their mop-top phase.
The first big teen idol I remember is Ricky Nelson. They should have his twin boys on the show. They are loads of fun. Actually they should do a Ricky Nelson night, instead of a generic teen idol night.
Ricky was very popular and his sales broke records. Also, he went from light rock to light country which would help the Idol contestants out a lot as they could pick their favorite genre, rock or country.
Last but not least, Ricky was the first singer to launch his singing career on television before becoming a hit on radio (just like the Idols)…
Maybe next year…it’s definitely overdue. Of course, most of the kids would have no idea who Ricky Nelson is, but they should have to learn about past greats and get out of their comfort zone. IMHO that is part of the competition.
Well, it’s a new theme so what the hell, I’m for it.
revcat, I got to see Ricky Nelson about 6 months before he died. He was still awesome.
And FWIW, my definition of a teen idol is “anyone who’s ever been on the cover of Tiger Beat.” But a playlist sure would help….
I wonder if ABBA would qualify as teen idols. They certainly appealed to many teen fans. I could see Siobhan taking on Dancing Queen, with its two octave range, and coming out in some funky ABBA costume. But could she make it her own?
Crystal should sing “Lost in Your Eyes” by Debbie Gibson. She would be perfect for it and could play electric guitar as well. It would bring the house down.
Someone needs to sing Archie’s “Crush”, then, if this is true. And if it’s available.
I just felt Rick(y) defined the Teen Idol of the age and his music is mixed genre. I would assume when they say Teen Idols, Elvis comes to mind. Maybe David or Shaun Cassidy. There was a period of time that no single guy was popular but rather groups. I will admit I don’t know a lot about the current Teen Idols. So, I’ll depend on many of you to keep me informed. (Thank you.)
I like life, so, I hope none of these contestants make me shoot myself by doing Swift, Cyrus, Bieber, Lovato, Gomez, or any Jonas Bro. Luckily, Crystal’s my favorite, & I can’t picture her going there.
I just had a vision of this as the group number.
Interesting idea… I think it would be fun if they included “Hard Days Night” or maybe even a Monkees song on the list. Pleasant Valley Sunday, anyone?
I don’t think ABBA is teen idols. Having said that, Siobhan can do The Winner Takes It All some justice.
Actually, I like to see ABBA as a theme week by itself.
OMG. My head would explode from the awesomeness of that.
ex-lurker, I tried to guess what I was going to see when I clicked on your link, and found myself humming, “…gonna keep on, keep on, keep on, keep on dancing all through the night…”
So CLOSE!
ABBA has been a theme of idol all over the world, why not US ?
Yes, Americans are not big fans of ABBA compared to other countries, but I think if it is a theme, it will be a surprise how much enjoyable it is. TPTB should do this. I don’t want same old same old themes. And those critics will see how hard ABBA songs really are to sing.
LOL
Oh there is no way they won’t call him (kara)oke, UNLESS, he has more musical ability than anyone can ever think or dream (no I wouldn’t dream this, seriously, just no) and can change something up when we least expect it. Honestly, I don’t see this happening, but this show has actually had surprises in the past.
Okay, I love my daughter and would be supremely happy for her if he made top ten. (He probably will.)
I hope this doesnt mean songs from current artist that are teens. YIKES. Maybe it means artists that started their careers as teens. My generation of teen idols would be Britney, Xtina, Nsync, Backstreet Boys, Jessica Simpson etc.
This is so strange. Simon’s comments after Lee’s performance this week – on trying to have a moment, personality not shining, being a dark horse; I immediatelly commented (jokingly)that maybe Lee could create a moment on the piano. I was thinking of Kris who played guitar only up to that point and then brought up the piano to create a moment.
Well, I read TV Guide article on Idol’s Dozen.
I guess I did not know this before, but on Lee’s article – his secret weapon is the piano which he is saving it for rainy day.
Kris has so much better tone of voice IMO, but of course he did not have Simon in his corner this early in the game.
For some reason I can only think of 60’s songs. Would Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons count? Saw a show recently where there was a medley of those great old songs: “Sherry”, “Walk Like A Man”, “Let’s Hand On To What We’ve Got”, “Workin’ My Way Back To You”.
Gosh, Casey could have a MOMENT if he did an early Elvis song. I vote for “Heartbreak Hotel”, but he’s got to move more onstage.
I liked the old Idols themes where they would wear clothes from different eras and sort of ham it up. Maybe that would add spark to this season.
ETA- Wow! Didn’t know Lee played piano, too. Can’t wait to see it.
I admit, I also got kind of excited when I read that TV Guide tip about Lee’s piano skills.
I like him, and I want to see “a moment” from him more than I do anyone else right now. After much analysis (certainly much more than I should be expending on a reality show), I’ve decided it’s a combination of (1) the fact that I really like the tone of his voice, (2) he seems like a nice guy, (3) he was watching Cookie like they all should have been, and (4) the fact that his deer-in-the-headlights look reminds me of a certain recently-lost and much-lamented young man. So, go, Lee! Give us the Alex Lambert Memorial Moment!!
