Greatest hits? Hmmm. I would have swapped out Gina Glocksen’s ”Smile” for “Paint it Black” or pretty any other Melinda Doolittle performance for “As Long as He Needs Me.” For Chris Richardson, I would have chosen “Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying” or “Change the World.” I would download all three Chris Sligh performances–any one of them could have made an appearance on this compilation.
What do you think?
For you completists, $29.97 will fetch you the “Collector’s Edition”. This digital compilation has 76 songs–every Idol studio recording made during the season, except for Jordin Sparks’ “Living on a Prayer.” (It was available on americanidol.com during the season, but has been dropped, for some reason).
All 76 songs are available as individual purchases for 99 cents.
Jordin Sparks’ and Blake Lewis’ tracks are available as mp3s at americanidol.com until June 20th. If you buy from the American Idol site, it’s not included on the Billboard Charts (19 has declined to send the figures to Soundscan) So, if you’re a fan who likes to see your fav on the charts–you’ll want to purchase their EPs and individual singles from iTunes.
No word on whether anything will be released on physical CDs.

I can’t believe they picked “Turn The Beat Around” for Haley. That was an awful performance and it’s what got her eliminated. They should’ve used “Tell Him” instead.
Lakisha, Chris Sligh, Sanjaya, and Phil have certifiable Greatest Hits. The others, not so much. (Well, I guess Blake’s is, but I vastly prefer the live version of YGLABN to the recording.)
I was disappointed in some of the choices. Gina had other performances that were better. Chris R definitely should have done a different one like Change the World. I think I would have given Haley Tell Him. The ones I agree with are Blake (although Time of the Season would have been good also), Chris S’s is good although too short, Phil’s Blaze of Glory is one of the only ones I liked by him, and Sanjaya because it was his only good one.
While “Smooth” wasn’t Chris R’s best performance on the show, I do like the studio version of it. I haven’t bought it yet, but from the clips I’ve heard, it sounds good.
I definitely need to get Lakisha’s “This Ain’t a Love Song”. Can’t remember if I have Phil’s “Blaze of Glory” or not. I think I do. I got several of his, one of Gina’s, and several of Melinda’s from the AI site during the season at the same time I was downloading all of Blake’s.
I think I’ll probably get Brandon’s, all of Sligh’s, a couple of Chris R’s, and a couple of Lakisha’s and that will be the extent of my downloading. With all the other ones I’ve bought, I’ve already given TPTB way too much $$ this year on downloads. I could have bought the whole collection. Except, I didn’t want the whole collection. Heh.
Who in the world chose these songs? I mean they couldn’t have any other song by Melinda. My Funny Valentine, I’m a Woman, Trouble is a Woman, or Have a Nice Day, anything except As Long as He Needs Me. Gina with Paint It Black, how by when she sang Stand by You and Jordin with that corny This is my now song. Seriously who decided these songs because they suck, only 3 choices actually made sense
Blake – You Give Love a Bad Name
Lakisha – This Aint a Love Song
Phil – Blades of Glory
Everything they could’ve changed
“only 3 choices actually made sense
Blake – You Give Love a Bad Name
Lakisha – This Aint a Love Song
Phil – Blades of Glory”
I totally agree!
I don’t understand why Jordin’s Studio Version of Living on a Prayer is not on this .. its amazing
As for Phil… i much preferred his Where the Blacktop Ends
There are some really odd choices on this compilation album. In the past, they’ve had a very limited number of songs to pick from (e.g. last year, it was the first 3 or 4 songs from the competition and in other years it had a theme such as “Soul”), but this year, they can pick any song they sang in the finals. There is no excuse for picking songs that were considered “their worst performance ever”. Who picked these songs?
Great Choices: Blake, Phil, Lakisha
Good Choices: Chris S, Sanjaya
Not Much to Choose from Choices: Brandon, Stephanie
Bad Choices: Chris R
Worst Choices: Gina, Haley, Melinda, Jordin
Chris R and Melinda had much better performances than the ones chosen. Melinda’s song is her most forgettable. They chose Gina’s and Haley’s worst performances. Gina would have been much better with “Smile” or “I’ll Stand By You”. Haley was better on “Tell Him”. Jordin should not be stuck with the coronation song. Give her something better to represent herself.
Last year, the contestants sang their compilation album song on the tour. For the sake of Melinda, I hope this isn’t true this year.
I agree with this, although I thought Besame Mucho a great choice for Sanjaya. They picked the most boring song for Melinda.
They should have picked Gina’s “I’ll Stand By You” but they wouldn’t because Carrie sang it too this season. I preferred Gina’s version, FWIW.
Wonder why they choose so many songs that ultimately got the singer eliminated? For Haley, would have gone with Missing You. Although she screwed up the words during the live performance, it was a good download. Tell Him was a fun and sexy live performance but not her best vocal. For Phil, I would have chosen Where the Blacktop Ends. Would have preferred Melinda’s Home compared to the Oliver soundtrack song. Gina’s song was definitely not her best performance but can’t really include I’ll Stand By You in light of Carrie Underwood’s superior version. What horrible luck to have your best song covered a few weeks later by a better singer.
