American Idol Finally Wins an Emmy
The Creative Arts Emmy Awards took place Saturday night. The event covers the technical awards and b-list categories deemed too boring for the primetime telecast. American Idol took the award for Outstanding Technical Direction for it’s Idol Gives Back episode. That win kept it within four losses (22 losses before the win) of beating “Newhart” which had 25 nominations without a win. Congrats TPTB!
However, there are some who think Idol should be forced t give it back:
How is it possible that “Idol Gives Back” was permitted to compete as a special and a series? It can’t be both. It was either a stand-alone TV special and should compete in those races, or it was a regular episode of an ongoing series and compete there. The Emmys have distinctly separate awards for those different program classifications.
I’m sure the academy folks would have to pry that award out of the producer’s cold, dead hands if they actually changed their minds…
Ryan Seacrest Weighs in on This Summer’s Idol Tour
In an USAToday interview with Ryan Seacrest (he’ll be hosting the Emmy Awards next Sunday night on FOX) he has this to say about the news that tour receipts are down for this summer’s Idol tour:
Ryan responded to our story today about the American Idol tour not selling out, saying: “Try smaller venues.” Then he added, “I think, to be candid with you, we could have done a better job with the storytelling of the contestants — looking at who they are and where they came from and compiling compelling bio pieces, and I think you’ll see us do more of that this season.”
Regular readers of this blog know that I agree wholeheartedly with Ryan’s assessment. The producers got a little too full of their own success–they forgot what makes the show compelling–the contestants. Nothing more, and nothing less.
