American Idol Ratings: Up From Last Week, But Still Trailing Season 7

Nielsen fast overnight ratings for 3/11/09 from Marc Berman:

-Ratings Breakdown:
Led by American Idol, Fox won this first Wednesday of the February 2009 sweeps (yesà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ ¦it is a delayed sweeps period), beating second-place CBS by 6.26 million viewers and 3.0 rating points among adults 18-49. But the surprisingly positive news for Fox was relocated drama Lie to Me, which moved into the 8 p.m. hour with a dominant 11.12 million viewers and a 3.4 rating/10 share among adults 18-49. American Idol followed with 24.90 million viewers and a 8.8/23 in the demo at 9 p.m. — the highest rated show of the evening, of course. One year earlier, however, Idol was stronger at 27.13 million viewers and a 10.3/26 among adults 18-49 on March 12, 2008, according to the final nationals.

Good News: Idol was up almost 2 million viewers-22.50 million viewers and a 7.8/22 among adults 18-49 in the 8 p.m. hour–airing at 9 pm instead of 8 pm.

I figured this would happen. I expect the trend to continue now that those dreary semi-finals are over.

I love this show so it’s sad for me to have that shark-jumping sensation that I haven’t been able to shake since the weird extended semi-finals and so many good people, like Junot and Felicia and others, being discarded by the judges, seemingly at random, for throwaways like the likable but out of his element Jorge. That and the addition of Kara BlahBlah and I’m actually taping the show and fast-forwarding thru it for the First Time Ever.

I guess my main problem is that this new format gave little chance to a lot of good people and too much power to the judges, so the way the group jelled doesn’t feel right to me, it feels wrong from the start. This final group has a lot of power but for some reason there’s no one magic contestant that makes me long for their success and I’m wondering if somehow the way it all came down has something to do with that.

  • CRB:

The format this year is akin to going back to something inferior for the sake of making change, or perhaps nostalgia. It will be interesting to see if the producers are right and “discovery” of this cast, contrasted with the “boredom” of last year, will hold the audience going forward this season. Personally, I doubt it. I’ve seen these people two (or three) times and I’m pretty bored with most of them already.

I really like this season but I think David Cook is the best contestant that was ever on the show.
I do hope ratings go up because I love AI.

I think the ratings will continue to improve as the season goes along but probably won’t be as good or better than previous seasons. It’s bound to happen after time and I do think this format has hurt somewhat.

  • Valentin432:

I don’t know if the new format has anything to do with the ratings drop.
The auditions had already a significant drop from last year.
It’s just a global phenomenon, AI has to compete with a growing competition, not only other channels but with the internet.

I think the show this week was great and should launch a very entertaining season. I also was angry because of some elimination but that’s nothing new with AI even with the ancient system (Covais over Gedeon, Scarnato over Sloan and Sanjaya over anyone are proof of that).

Val, that’s a good point about competition from other media.

Even this early, I would normally have a few strong favorites, but I’m still waiting…I can say that out of everyone so far, Alexis stands out for me the most. But the way Kara keeps encouraging her to tart herself up has made her actually more bland to me, she looks more costume-y and more like everybody else now. Maybe next time they’ll bring out the stripper pole for this cute young ma. I’m not a prude, but what was so wrong with her fresh young look?

I do like Wednesdays with the guest stars.
