American Idol Receives 5 Emmy Nominations, So You Think You Can Dance Recieves 4

The nominations for the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards were announced this morning, and both American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance received nominations. The show will be broadcast on ABC, Sunday September 21.

American Idol received 5 nominations, including one in the brand-new category, Outstanding Host For A Reality Or Reality-Competition Program. Ryan Seacret is a most capable host, and I’ll be disappointed if he doesn’t beat the likes of Heidi Klum (Project Runway), Howie Mandel (Deal or No Deal), Tom Bergeron (Dancing With The Stars) and even Jeff Probst (Survivor).

Idol’s other nominated categories are:

  • Outstanding Reality-Competition Program - This is the Award that Amazing Race wins every frickin’ year.
  • Outstanding Picture Editing Of Clip Packages For Talk, Performance, Award Or A Reality-Competition Program - The David Cook Homecoming clip from The Top 3 Results Show is nominated in this category.
  • Outstanding Sound Mixing For A Variety, Music Series Or A Special - The nomination is for Idol Gives Back.
  • Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video Control For A Miniseries, Movie Or A Special - Also for Idol Gives Back. IGB won in this category last year. It’s Idol’s only Emmy win.

So You Think You Can Dance is nominated in two categories. Three routines from last season received nods in the Outstanding Choreography category:

  • Hummingbird and flower / “The Chairman’s Waltz” by Wade Robson
  • Transformers / “Fuego” by Shane Sparks
  • Table / “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)” by Mandy Moore

SYTYCD is also nominated in the Outstanding Makeup For A Multi-Camera Series Or A Special (Non-Prosthetic) category.

    Those are all fabulous choices!!!

I have to say, I think the Amazing Race is a great show. Although it would be nice for AI to win, it’s going to be tough with one judge with a 4 word vocabulary and another who doesn’t even know what she’s watching. As much as I love AI, Amazing Race is much less annoying, IMHO.

  2. 2 Grammie Kari Jul 17th, 2008 at 1:33 pm

Two And A Half Men for “Outstanding Makeup For A Multi-Camera Series Or A Special (Non-Prosthetic” just doesn’t seem to make sense in this category.

I hope one of the SYTYCD routines for “Outstanding Choreography.”

I have never seen “Amazing Race”; however, if it continues to win it must have something going for it.

Ryan must feel very happy about this nomination. During the whole PaulaGate segment, he had to work hard for his money!

  3. 3 sumidol Jul 17th, 2008 at 1:38 pm

Well double yay for Wade and Shane. Now just get Shane back on THIS year!!!

  4. 4 Stefunny Jul 17th, 2008 at 1:48 pm

As a reality show, Amazing Race pulls off the incredible — going from country to country, doing interesting tasks and competitions, etc. I am a huge fan and I see why it wins time after time. AI, while fun to watch, doesn’t quite have the wow factor of TAR.

  5. 5 baxter Jul 17th, 2008 at 1:49 pm

WTF??? AI didn’t get a nomination for Outstanding Choreography??? Has the Emmy committee not seen the passion, talent and skill that every Idol puts into thier group numbers on a weekly basis?? How could they not be moved by the chest bump of Johns and Cook?? Not wept with emotion at the pure joy Jason put into his skipping across the stage?? Not felt the concentration Brooke put into every stiff kneed side step she preformed? Not seen the the originality that KLC put into her classic “I only know one move and I think it’s sexy” one foot forward and bounce up and down move? Pure genious if you ask me!!

    AI JUST.GOT.ROBBED!!!!!

Oh the injustice. I am demanding a recount. I will not stand for this!!! Anyone else with me???? :lol_tb:

  6. 6 sumidol Jul 17th, 2008 at 2:08 pm

Baxter - now that is very funny! Ok I am with you - lol lol lol

  7. 7 spritely Jul 17th, 2008 at 2:12 pm

Hell to the Yes, I’m with you baxter! Gross miscarriage of justice! And don’t forget Sy’s twirls, either. And the Robot Dance! And Cookie’s Backbend of Doom! And Archie’s Stick-Out-His-Hand Jive! Not to mention that marvelous pas de deux Cookie did with Ramielle when he stuck his behind in her back ’cause he couldn’t get down any lower. Sheer, classic perfection, all of it.

Thank god you called this to our attention, lol.

  8. 8 schmanda Jul 17th, 2008 at 2:14 pm

Ryan is certainly capable, but I feel like he’s been kind of “off” this season and last, like he wasn’t really having all that much fun anymore. Or is it just me?

I have to go with Tom Bergeron for this one. If nothing else, he should be given some sort of award for dealing with human void Samantha Harris or, failing that, a heapin’ helpin’ of hazard pay.

  9. 9 Patchchat Jul 17th, 2008 at 2:31 pm

Yeah…I gotta go with Amazing Race, too. It’s the only reality show I’ll watch. I end up investing A LOT in the show in terms of affection and emotion and it nearly always pays off. This was my first year watching A.I. and most of that was on You Tube. I wanna do Amazing Race, but I’m afraid they’ll make eat some country’s delicacy that’s still moving on the plate. It’d be over. Done. Taking my passport and going home.

I too go for Tom Bergeron. He’s very engaging — sometimes downright hysterical. And he deserves hazzard pay for dealing with that useless cohost. I thought it was just me who thought she sux.

Perhaps an American Idol could perform on the Emmys. It doesn’t matter which one just as long as it’s David Cook.

    :)

I actually like the sound mixing during the non-Idol Gives Back live broadcasted episodes this year. For the first time in Idol history Dolby Digital was “done right” with an almost pure vocal-only front center channel. The optiion to pull the vocal from the cacophony of the band allows one to hear near acappella versions of the performances that emphasize singing ability, or the lack thereof.

    LOL, and IAWTC.

Outstanding Picture Editing Of Clip Packages For Talk, Performance, Award Or A Reality-Competition Program:

American Idol • Episode 733 (David Cook Goes Home) FOX •

Huh? Is that the name of the episode, or did they just nominate the DC part from that ep?

  12. 12 CRB Jul 17th, 2008 at 3:26 pm

Huh? Is that the name of the episode, or did they just nominate the DC part from that ep?

It is the weepy package that they put together for his homecoming where he is crying, his brother is crying, the crowd is crying….The answer it was the editing for that single segment.

  13. 13 Michelle Jul 17th, 2008 at 3:35 pm

Adore TAR and agree it should win for series…but I’m pulling for Ryan to win host (esp since the TAR host isn’t nominated this year!) Go TEAM SEACREST!

And Yay for DC’s homecoming segment being nominated! DC made for a lot of great TV on AI this year :)

  14. 14 mj Jul 17th, 2008 at 3:36 pm

It is the weepy package that they put together for his homecoming where he is crying, his brother is crying, the crowd is crying….The answer it was the editing for that single segment.

I thought it was the name of the episode, but now that I think about it, your explanation makes more sense.

I’m going add that to my post.

  15. 15 abbysee Jul 17th, 2008 at 3:37 pm

I hope Ryan wins in his category. He truly is the best at what he does. Except for the weird thing he and Simon do together, well, not that, lol. Just the silly banter. Otherwise he is incredible.

  16. 16 jenniewdc Jul 17th, 2008 at 3:49 pm

I’m on the bandwagon for “The Amazing Race,” even though it’s won every time. It’s my favorite reality show. Just the editing job itself is incredible!

I’ve always liked Ryan, but he doesn’t seem to have the enthusiasm and the quick wit that he used to have. Maybe he’s just gotten bored with the show after hosting it so many times. I didn’t used to appreciate Tom Bergeron, but as someone else said, I noticed this season how witty and spontaneous he is. Still, for old time’s sake, I wouldn’t mind if Ryan won.

Next year, I hope Cat Deeley is nominated for best host. She’s great, as has been said on this blog before.

  17. 17 Jolene Jul 17th, 2008 at 3:50 pm

The answer it was the editing for that single segment.

Now I can pretend David Cook is nominated for an Emmy.
    …Well, close enough. LOL

And I thought it was exceptional editing. Having watched the entire day live on FoxKC.com, the AI editors really did a masterful job conveying the essence of that day.

It’s here if anyone wants a reminder:

  18. 18 Kirsten Jul 17th, 2008 at 4:19 pm

Count me in as a fan of The Amazing Race. What that production staff does is nothing short of a miracle. Meanwhile, AI’s production staff can barely remember which camera to go to and when to turn on a mic. I noticed that they got even less technical nominations than they normally do (and we still don’t know why they got rid of the old director who was much better, IMO). It’s a good thing they added those two new categories (host and clip segment) or the nominee haul would be pretty dismal this year.

Any word on which episode they sent in for submission? I checked at The Envelope and that is one of the few they don’t know. I’ve maintained for years that they should submit one of the Hollywood rounds (Josiah, Syesha, weird cough-drops, etc.), but for some reason, the producers keep ignoring my blog posts (j/k). They always send in one of the performance shows which are nice, but not all that exciting out of context (imagine that is the only episode you watch. Which one would grab you enough to care if you knew nothing about the contestants?).

The episode that TAR sent in features Goths doing yoga, Dad’s melting down while hanging posters, hippies making a lei, a type-A trying to give a flower garland to an elephant and people delivering propane with out of control carts. All told in a story. Tough to beat, but I think TAR is vulnerable this year. Too many wins and I think they should have gone with the donkeys.

I think AIs chances are slim. They slipped in the ratings (the Emmies never like that), they slipped on production values (the Emmies never like that either) and they’ve been nominated too many times. It might be time for Dancing with the Stars.

  19. 19 jersey Jul 17th, 2008 at 4:26 pm

Amazing Race for the win!!! Love.that.show! I also hope that Ryan wins for host - although if Phil Keoghan had been nominated, it would be a tougher call for me. I do think that Ryan has the tougher job, but I love Phil.

  20. 20 KrazeeK120 Jul 17th, 2008 at 8:32 pm

I do think that Ryan has the tougher job, but I love Phil.

Ooooh, ITA! However, my favorite is Jeff Probst. I hope he wins. I just don’t think Ryan is all that funny, to be honest.

  21. 21 Keel Jul 17th, 2008 at 9:00 pm

For Emmy Drams, I recall that shows on the short-list get to send in 1 episode each for consideration. The eventual nominees then get to send in 5 episodes each for consideration. Do they use the same process for reality shows? If so, then perhaps AI would be able to showcase some story arcs better / have more context by showing 5 episodes to judge from instead of just 1.

  22. 22 Margaux Jul 17th, 2008 at 10:20 pm

Not only did AI get robbed on choreography, I was sure that hair and makeup would get nominated for transforming David Cook from a nerd to a sexy rock star..

Had to be as much a challenge as turning Paul Giamatti into John Adams..
    Robbed, I’d say Robbed.

  23. 23 spritely Jul 17th, 2008 at 10:29 pm

hair and makeup would get nominated for transforming David Cook from a nerd to a sexy rock star..

I’m going to be laughing about this all night.
And shouldn’t there be a category for best accessorizing? Miles could be nominated for giving DC the handcuff and star necklace.

  24. 24 dorris Jul 17th, 2008 at 11:18 pm

TAR is a classic. It’s my all time favorite.

Tom Bergeron is really very good. Very funny and quick witted. I don’t know about Ryan because I haven’t seen AI in its entirety (except some ep in Season 5).

    SYTYCD :
Hummingbird and flower / “The Chairman’s Waltz” -Wade Robson
Transformers / “Fuego” - Shane Sparks
Table / “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)” - Mandy Moore
—All good routines but then, there are so many good routines/ Choreographies from last season’s SYTYCD.

  25. 25 FolkFan Jul 17th, 2008 at 11:26 pm

I had the same thought about hair—they should have submitted Dolly Parton week for the Little Sparrow Haircut, or as they call it on TWoP—The Haircut Heard Round the World.

I’d be okay with Ryan winning. There were a few times this season where I actually said, damn, he does great with a hard job, moving the show along, getting the eliminated contestant in shape to sing, etc. If Phil from the Amazing Race was nominated, though, well, he and his eyebrow would have my vote.

I’d be good with the David Cook homecoming segment winning. They did a great job with that, boiling down like 14 hours of homecoming into a short sweet package that really was well done. I’d think that I’m F’g Matt Damon wins, unless it splits votes with I’m F’g Ben Affleck.

I can’t say that I have any opinion on the IGB nomination.

I don’t really support AI winning either of the other awards. On the big one, there were a slew of problems this year, largely coming down to the production. Just to name a few: (1) the hour-long results shows; (2) the Swaybot pit and camera shots through the Swaybot pit; (3) sound quality issues; (4) the judging fiasco on Top 5; (5) the ancient themes; and (6) the fact that they exhausted the contestants to such an extent that the last few weeks were relatively low on highlights. I’d vote for Project Runway. Not the best year for The Amazing Race, and Project Runway had a great season.

On sound mixing, I know that they nominate for a particular episode, but the sound mixing was so bad throughout the season (culminating in the disgrace that was Top 4—it’s amazing how much better Hungry Like the Wolf is when it doesn’t sound like it’s acapella—that I’d hate for the sound mixers to get any validation through an Emmy. The episode actually nominated—the finale—also had some sound issues, particularly with the group performances. Take a listen to the George Michael group performance, which is otherwise a very good group performance. Lots of problems with turning on and off of mikes, and mike levels.

  26. 26 Stefunny Jul 17th, 2008 at 11:29 pm

I think they should have gone with the donkeys.

It’s the camel footage that is usually the icing on the cake, methinks. Although nothing will ever be quite as funny as Colin yelling that his ox was broken.

As for host, I think Ryan does a very good job keeping the whole show running on a schedule. I would like him to tone down the pitting judges against one another but mostly he shines when he has to make the shows with more contestants fit within the time/commercial break parameters.

  27. 27 cooktard76 Jul 17th, 2008 at 11:55 pm

I love AI, but not even Ryan can take away my love for Jeff Probst. I hope the Cookie homecoming clip wins though!

  28. 28 Grammie Kari Jul 18th, 2008 at 2:08 am

Tom Bergeron is really very good. Very funny and quick witted. I don’t know about Ryan because I haven’t seen AI in its entirety (except some ep in Season 5).

I like Tom Bergeron as well and think he is deserving. Howie does attract a lot of attention.

Although Ryan might be deserving of a nomination just because he’s been able to last this long, he did not handle PaulaGate with finesse and forgiveness. Not one apology to Jason. I lost respect for everyone associated with the show that week, and I have been watching since Season 1.

  29. 29 GEEK4VOCAB Jul 18th, 2008 at 6:28 am

Oh my God… I just watched that homecoming package again on You Tube… it is fricking amazing and deserves to win!

My favorite bit is when the cheerleaders are doing their thing and the camera pans from them over to David. He just shrugs and shakes his head like, “I’m just as shocked as you are, man.”

  30. 30 poporange Jul 18th, 2008 at 9:30 am

Right Daivd Cooks sinsere tear full hommcomming should get an Emmy?Who knows but the Emmy luv tears. The thing I wish is that when An Idol meets someone who is Ill/wheelchair to make it a private charished event not for PR or a media circus and also maybe someone over the age of 30 would be nice .

American Idol desserves an Emmy win and Friday Night Lights does not. Who wants deeply complecated stroylines no they want simplitic banter between half-twited judges .Newly written lines heck no, just give the contestant song alredy song and the judges the same old lines to repeat untill the audiance wants to go bald by tearing thier hair out.

  31. 31 poporange Jul 18th, 2008 at 11:42 pm

correction- first part was harsh it is great to have yungsters meet thier idols maybe also have people who are over a certain age meet thiers. Just cynicle of some in the media it seems story first then individuals second.
