American Idol Songwriters Contest

The song choices are up for the American Idol Songwriting contest. I haven’t listened yet, but I’m sure each and every one is a giant pile of POO. When I get a minute this weekend, I’ll take a listen. Oh yeah, I said that last year and actually never got around to it. Ha ha ha. No, really, this year I’ll listen, really I will.

If you want to register and vote for the contest, you can do it at the americanidol.com Songwriter Contest page. Or, if you just want to listen, Rickey has them posted at his site.

Maybe I’ll post a few of my thoughts in a bit. I’ve been busy working on the new server! The site will be moving to a dedicated server this weekend. Watch for a post detailing site downtime. Hopefully it won’t be too painful.

Interesting. I am now 99.9999% sure this is going to be a David vs David finale. May the best one win.

Aww. Hopefully it won’t take too long to get the site moved to a shiny new server. :D

A lot of the songs are just simply painful to listen to. TPTB must surely love them some subpar lyricists and songs about what is basically believing and being in moments and making it, and other cheery things like which will take me a year to list if I were to write them all down. I still question why TPTB don’t just let the finalists pick a song from the 20 or even better, sing their own material. Sigh.

    Thanks MJ. :)

I hope the server move goes well. I don’t know what I’d do without my daily dose of Idol crack delivered to me via this blog. :)

Yeah, these songs make me believe even more that they definitely want a battle of the two Davids in the finale. I’ve only actually listened all the way through to about 5 to 7 of them. Some of them, I just can’t make myself listen to. Ugh.

I agree, it sounds like a David-David finale based on those songs. I actually think more of the “guy” songs are better suited to DC, but I guess Archie has no trouble with a “girl” song. The actual girl songs are not only bad, but seem ill-suited to these particular girls for the most part, with the exception of maybe KLC (but the demo singer on the good-ish country song sings waaay better than her)

I’ve gone through and ranked the songs 4 times so far, giving 8 to 10 stars to anything with an electric guitar hook and one star to everything else.

But, I suspect it’s all for nothing, the confetti will likely fall on Archie’s bland rendition of “Here I Am.”

Okay, I went through and gave a 10 to anything that would suit Jason, a 7 to anything that would suit Cookie, and a 0 to anything made for Archie. I don’t have the desire to listen to that dreck anymore, so that’s it for me.

No doubt the Archie’s will get their pick.

mj… congrats on the new server! Your page has become so popular, especially on Tuesday nights, you’ve just had to upgrade! Awesome! And thank you!

I went to vote in the Songwriting Contest.
    I had 2 favorites.
1- Dream Big which I like so much, I hope I get to hear it again someday. (Apparently, they’re posted on Rickey’s site. Yay!) I really liked the voice of the girl singer, too.
2 - Only Love (Can Change the World)… really like the chorus a lot!

One song I disliked so much I had to give it a one.

    Wait…

    [dons tinfoil hat]

Did anyone vote last year? Did they ask year of birth last year? I don’t really care, but I wonder if they are looking for song choices that appeal to a certain demographic the most. [/tinfoil hat]

…I’ve gone through and ranked the songs 4 times so far

    Isn’t that against the rules?
They only let me vote once.

Any song can get electric guitar added to it when they play it live. David Cook proved that with “Hello”.

Being a singer and songwriter myself, I think the words and melody are an important consideration.

Ok….to my fellow peeps that directed me to where I could listen to the songs without registering at AI.com……I.HATE.YOU. You are all now officially dead to me. Good lord, after a trip over there I feel like a doughnut that just went thru the glazer at Krispy Kream.

After fighting my way thru the (inappropriate)love fest…shudders…I tried to get thru all the songs, but DAYUM, those “songs” are just plain bad.

Sooooo…here’s my thinking….DC please please make it to the top 3….tank on purpose….bow out gracefully…then drop to your knees and thank whomever you want for never never having to have your name, face, or voice associated with the Cheese Whiz covered block of Velvetta known as the “Coronation Ballad”

    sniff….what have I ever done to you people….sniff :cry_tb:

You’re only supposed to vote once.

    Ummmm-hmmmmm

Well, technically, I voted, my husband voted, my daughter voted, etc. Many people have access to more than one e-mail account. Please do not report me to Nigel :)

    Well let’s see…………………….so far I’ve been born in 1965, 1979 and 1988!

I did vote last year, but I don’t remember if they asked our age.
I guess for most people, their age might sway their song choice a bit. I know mine does. I don’t really care for the music of today. I loved the 60’s and 70’s, but I’m 49.

LMAO. If you’re voting for the same songs every time and they’re doing some kind of “demographic survey”, you’re completely screwing up their results. LOVE IT!!!

  14. 14 jersey Apr 12th, 2008 at 8:56 pm

I applaud all of you peeps who are listening to all of these songs in order to vote. I don’t think I can bring myself to do it! LOL

  15. 15 hapi Apr 12th, 2008 at 9:36 pm

    the songs: blehhhhhhh

They don’t start the contest where one could even enter, until it’s like a week or so and its closed. They seem to already have their songs. How does that happen? Not enough time to enter actually, unless they already have ‘their’ people they have in mind entering.

  16. 16 nmc Apr 13th, 2008 at 8:18 am

I wish that they would do one of the two following things:

    a. Either let the final two pick for themselves from the 20 songs of drivel–because that way someone like Blake isn’t having to sing something like “This is my now” and because, like every other week of the show, they’d be choosing a song for themselves that showcases their talent.

    or

    b. They have to know all season that they will have to perform THEIR OWN SONG at the end of the season. They can write it themselves, so that we can get a glimpse of what they would offer on a cd, or, they can work with a songwriter team just in the same way that musicians do anyway.

I mean, seriously–give us a chance to really see what they’re going to offer us once they’re off the show! Making DavidA sing the Beatles, or DavidC inspirational, or Jason/Brooke sing Mariah? What in the world? At least by this point, I know what Jason, Brooke, DavidC, Syesha, and KLC will put on a CD. And I know who plays instruments, and will therefore possibly put that on a cd. But these songs offered to the public to choose–when each style is so different? Each contestant left would sound great on some of these and wretched on others. And I’m sure even the final two left will have completely different styles and shouldn’t have to sing the same song.

    Ugh.

  17. 17 sciencefan Apr 13th, 2008 at 5:54 pm

I agree with your suggestion nmc to let the idols choose for themselves. After all, they’ve done that already during the season anyway - choosing from a list. Especially this year with the vastly different styles and vocal ranges among the remaining 7 contestants, it would be better to let the winner choose which one they like the most. We should let Nigel know.

  18. 18 dulce Apr 14th, 2008 at 7:31 am

Wow. These songs really make “This Is My Now” sound like a winner. They should either let the contestants choose themselves (or let them write it themselves). Now…all the fan bases are busy trying to vote for the song that their idol can sing. Interesting. I swear this show is a great study on demographics. Amazing stuff.

That being said…the songs BLOW. It sounds like they are preparing for David vs. David, but it probably won’t happen. But there are a lot of songs that either David could nail. Can’t say the same for the others. “You Believed In Me” actually sounds the most in David Cook’s wheelhouse. Any of the ballads will work for David A to varying degrees, maybe even for Carly. Hmmm…either way…what a sucky finale.
