According to Vote For The Worst, there will be more than a Top 24 this year.   The rumored number is 36, and according to a   posters in the VFTW forums, the Top 50 who were chosen in Hollywood a few weeks ago will be whittled down to 30+ in January, and will come back in February to appear on the live shows.

A couple more new and notable Hollywood Contestants: Ju’Not (he auditioned S7) and Perrie Cataldo (Also from S7–He’s the single dad with a young daughter, and an arrest record)

  • CRB:

It sounds like a move, if true, that will lessen further the meager amount of screen time that people who aren’t being promoted will have to make an impression with the viewing audience.

When one combines this with the highly restricted song choices and horrendously limiting themes that we saw last year and it should be quite clear what constitutes “the cream” that will be skimmed for the Top 12.

  • Tony:

Top 36? So now each contestant will have even less time to sing their song and the show will feel rushed (that is if the top 36 show isn’t 4 hours, which is a LOT of American Idol)

  • Justin:

Good god… I wish they would just leave everything the way it has been for the past few years. What are they going to do, form groups again and have the top 2 from each enter into the top 12 then do a wildcard? Hello- we did that in season 3 and we formed a pretty crappy top 12! With the exception of a few (barrino, degarmo, hudson, london)… then there were some who were “pretty” good- amy, george, possibly jasmine. then the rest were just ok, if not worse.

  • Soapbox0916:

The earlier seasons had 30 plus contestants in them (though they split them into groups and then wildcard). That is probably the number that is needed to handle both the plants and the newbies. I have nothing against people getting a second chance or having experience, but newbies should have a chance at a first time too.

I like to vote for the underdogs and the “rough drafts” with potential, so all of my very favorites were elimiated by AI (not the fans) before the semi-finals. I was very thrilled with the Top 50, but felt like I got the wind knocked out of my sail when the top 24 was announced.

While last season brought in new fans, it really lost my enthusiam. Last season was not for me, although I am glad that others enjoyed it. I want AI to appeal more to me, but not lose the appeal to others with different tastes. More semi-finalists brings in more types of fans, and then AI can blame the fans for not voting for a particular contestant.

Plus more semi-finalists means more contestants that they can keep signed. They can hang onto some contestants that they are not sure about, and see how the public reacts to the contestant, before losing opportunities.

If they would have done this last year, they could have hung onto Josiah, Colton Swon, Angela Martin, Kyle the politician, and so forth. This would have also have allowed them to keep the plants, who some I think were music industry agreements to appease someone, while allowing more niche artists who probably would not win, but may come back to haunt AI if cut, to stay in the competition longer and then be voted out by fans instead of AI judges.

Also, as CRB stated, the heavily promoted chosen stand out even more in a larger pool.

So far, the Top 50 is all guys. haha, if they keep this up, maybe Simon will be right!

And YAY for Ryan P.A. Johnson! :)

  • Duke:

Ju Not reminds me of John Legend. with an amazing falsetto. ME GUSTA!

LOL. “rough drafts”. I like that :)

  • Ugh. I really hope they don’t go back to the way the semi’s were done in seasons 1-3. I really prefer it the way it is now, because we get to hear them sing more than one song, and one fluke good performance in the semi’s isn’t as likely to get a mediocre person into the top 12.

I could see how it might work if they added another week to the semi’s and eliminated more people each week, but please please not back to the old semi’s.

  • elisad:

I actually like the old semi, cause it’s quick. Better if they just go straight to the final…
