American Idol Top 10 to Ring the NASDAQ Stock Market Closing Bell

While the American Idols Live! Tour makes it’s way through the New York area, the kids make time today to ring the Nasdaq stock market closing bell.

Watch the live video feed at 4 pm ET HERE.

ETA: The Idols are being introduced now. The Nasdaq guy is butchering names. It’s pretty hilarious. David Cook thanked all the tour sponsors. Now they’re taking pictures and getting a bunch of little kids in place.

That was pretty amusing. The usual hilarity you’d expect from the usual suspects ensued.

I managed to grab the video. It’ll be up in a bit

ETAA: Check out the video, After the JUMP…

OK, that wins for the most random Idol-related thing I’ve ever seen on my computer screen.

  2. 2 Pam Aug 1st, 2008 at 4:01 pm

Jason was such hoot! I loved that goofy grin on his face! :laugh_tb:

  3. 3 Layla Aug 1st, 2008 at 4:02 pm

I don’t mean to be rude…but I watched it and was left wondering What the fuck was that about? Just PR I guess.

  4. 4 psnax Aug 1st, 2008 at 4:02 pm

Yep, that was completely random - I think the Idols thought so too :) I just wonder what the traders thought ….

  5. 5 sleepyinsomniac Aug 1st, 2008 at 4:04 pm

I couldn’t see it on my laptop. Can somebody recap what happened?

    Also, someone at TWOP said:

Is the NASDAQ building actually saying?:

    NASDAQ WELCOMES

    DAVID COOK

    AUGUST 1, 2008

    Can anyone confirm?

  6. 6 Jolene Aug 1st, 2008 at 4:06 pm

That was pretty damn random indeed. Cookie is an excellent spokesperson though. It’s like he’s been doing this forever.

    Who were the kids?

  7. 7 kathrynTX Aug 1st, 2008 at 4:06 pm

ITA cheese! And did the electronic billboard say DC hearts MJ at the end? I couldn’t quite make it all out. I guess that was just PR. Maybe other Idols have done it, I dunno, I haven’t ever followed like I have this year. Jason and MJ are very silly. Cook is a darling. He specifically did NOT thank the Tour Manager LOL! Love them. :biggrin_wp:

  8. 8 Pam Aug 1st, 2008 at 4:06 pm

There will be pics up later from Getty Images and probably Wireimage too. With last year’s group, we got tons of photos. :)

  9. 9 cookcricket Aug 1st, 2008 at 4:08 pm

Oh good! Thank you MJ ahead of time for posting a video! I just caught the very end with the ringing of the bell(?).

They seemed to be enjoying themselves and yes, very random indeed! LOL.

  10. 10 kathrynTX Aug 1st, 2008 at 4:11 pm

Yes sleepy the NASDAQ billboard says NASDAQ WELCOMES DAVID COOK AUGUST 1, 2008! Oh and now it says NASDAQ WELCOMES AMERICAN IDOLS LIVE TOUR 2008! So that’s cool eh? I suppose Cook gets his own name on there cause he is THE American Idol 2008. Oh wait, now they are putting each person’s name up there! Oh boy…get your name on the NASDAQ electronic billboard and you’re a ROCK-N-ROLL STAH! How very silly. Alright, I have to get back to work. :bye_tb:

  11. 11 Sarah Aug 1st, 2008 at 4:15 pm

I think the electronic billboard actually said DC hearts NY. That would make sense, I think. Either that, or he was just being his silly self! :wink_wp: Anyway, it was all very fun, the kids were adorable, and DC did indeed handle himself like the pro he is. And maybe the bell ringing was because AI or RCA or something like that is sold on NASDAQ?

  12. 12 dizzyclover Aug 1st, 2008 at 4:15 pm

Loved that! Did you see the DC (heart)’s NY on the big sing thingy (I don’t know what to call it) at the end?? … LOVED IT!! :)

  13. 13 dizzyclover Aug 1st, 2008 at 4:16 pm

ok that would be SIGN thingy (sorry…)

  14. 14 Layla Aug 1st, 2008 at 4:18 pm

DC id very well-spoken indeed. I still am left with a WTF feeling. Oh well……

  15. 15 Jolene Aug 1st, 2008 at 4:21 pm

Loved that! Did you see the DC (heart)’s NY

LOL, just saw it now! I didn’t get that it was NY though until reading it here.
I think he just snuck it in like a second earlier cause you can see him scribble something there.
    Nice touch, no doubt.

  16. 16 sciencefan Aug 1st, 2008 at 4:22 pm

    I missed it.
Thanks in advance, mj, for uploading the video.
I logged in at 4:04 PM.
All I saw was the billboard.

There’s youtube of the gang from AI a year ago,
    doing the same thing.

  17. 17 kathrynTX Aug 1st, 2008 at 4:33 pm

Oh darn, it was DC HEARTS NY, of course! I liked DC hearts MJ! hahaha! The bell ringing signifies the closing of the market. Well, I gotta get my Cook fix however whenever wherever I can right now…even random stock market closings will do. Sigh.

  18. 18 Jolene Aug 1st, 2008 at 4:37 pm

Oh darn, it was DC HEARTS NY, of course! I liked DC hearts MJ!

kathrynTX , I must admit I liked DC hearts MJ better too. LOL!
Think I’ll go have another look at that latest Mavidance.
    ;D

  19. 19 Suzanne Aug 1st, 2008 at 4:58 pm

I cannot believe that is one of the things that the Idols do. Incredible. Well, now they can go to dinner I guess.

And could they dress any lower for Wall Street?

  20. 20 onetruevoice Aug 1st, 2008 at 5:04 pm

thats cute how jason tells the little girl to move over!

  21. 21 gabam Aug 1st, 2008 at 5:09 pm

    Thanks, MJ.

They have celebs ring the closing bell quite often. Elliott did it last year.

  22. 22 cookcricket Aug 1st, 2008 at 5:19 pm

So does anyone know who the kids were and why they were there? It wasn’t as if they seemed excited to be with the idols???!!!

They made sure NASDAQ wasn’t covered up by a kid. heh. Poor Ramielle should have been out front with them. LOL.

Yep, I haven’t followed Idol and definately not so very much after like this year, but apparently with the above post it was done last yr. too.

One more thing, why is my comment so long on this…?LOL.

  23. 23 sabby_rina Aug 1st, 2008 at 5:23 pm

Oh man, I’m so ignorant. I thought NASDAQ had something to do with race car driving. I thought they were going to a car racing track to say “Ready, start your engines.” I’m so dumb.

  24. 24 GwendolynD Aug 1st, 2008 at 5:25 pm

A few of those kids had a “Why am I here?” look on their faces? LOL.

  25. 25 Layla Aug 1st, 2008 at 5:35 pm

Oh man, I’m so ignorant. I thought NASDAQ had something to do with race car driving. I thought they were going to a car racing track to say “Ready, start your engines.” I’m so dumb.

I’m still cracking up at this remark!!! LOL

  26. 26 elle Aug 1st, 2008 at 5:38 pm

    I can’t believe I just watched that!

  27. 27 jpw-ak Aug 1st, 2008 at 5:41 pm

I immediately thought “the Muppets take Manhattan!” Fun PR stunt, totally unrelated to music, and I wonder if they’ll invade MTV this afternoon!

  28. 28 gingerly Aug 1st, 2008 at 5:42 pm

    I can’t believe I just watched that!

Yeah, well I’ll do anything I guess for a glimpse of Mr. Cook.

  29. 29 CFIdolsfan Aug 1st, 2008 at 5:46 pm

I cannot believe that is one of the things that the Idols do. Incredible. Well, now they can go to dinner I guess.

And could they dress any lower for Wall Street?

I think it is a cool way of getting a little recreation, and letting people see who they are, while on a grueling tour schedule. They did it last year as well, and they also dressed casually. I guess there was no need to dress up as they are not there to do business.

  30. 30 Zeppelin Aug 1st, 2008 at 6:37 pm

    LOL and WTH to that.

MJ and Jason crack me up.
    Cook is the perfect spokesperson.

  31. 31 CRB Aug 1st, 2008 at 6:49 pm

This is just 19E extracting another collective pint of Idol blood. These kids don’t need a freaking day off when there is a buck to be made…come on people! Work them and call it ‘a day off in the Big Apple”.

I wonder which one of the corporate sponsors demands this little Wall Street meet and greet as part of their package. Or maybe this is a side deal that CKX worked out with NASDAQ when they bought the 19E franchise aboard back in ‘05.

Anyway, this has to rank right up there with the weird Top 2 concert that Ford/Adcraft gets post tour on the strange perquisite list.

  32. 32 Revolver Aug 1st, 2008 at 7:21 pm

Actually, ringing the closing bell at the NY Stock Exchange is a time honored tradition for celebrities, athletes, musicians, visiting dignitaries, presidential candidates, etc, etc.

Now there is a similar tradition with the Nasdaq (especially when the celebrities in question have ties to Nasdaq related companies).

Believe it or not it is considered an honor.

So .. not as odd as you might think

  33. 33 yf7184 Aug 1st, 2008 at 7:36 pm

Why is Carley dressed like that? Everyone else is wearing what we are used to seeing them in but Carley looks a bit different. Why? Or am I just so ignorant about her dailywear routines?

  34. 34 sumidol Aug 1st, 2008 at 7:46 pm

Yeah, they always different celebrities do this. Led Zeppelin did it back in 2005, now that was an odd sight.

  35. 35 cookcricket Aug 1st, 2008 at 9:02 pm

I’ve seen Carley dressed like this in m&g pictures.

  36. 36 sumidol Aug 1st, 2008 at 9:02 pm

Is there something I need to download or add to see these videos without the stopping and starting and taking forever? I didnt have that problem with the redlasso ones - I am about to throw my computer on the ground right now!

  37. 37 IGetCranked Aug 1st, 2008 at 9:06 pm

This is one time when I’m glad I’m not famous. Oy

  38. 38 sumidol Aug 1st, 2008 at 9:25 pm

I would love to have a personal tour throughout the Nasdaq - that would really be something to remember. What history there is behind that place - they were very lucky to be given that opportunity.

  39. 39 baxter Aug 1st, 2008 at 9:27 pm

Good Lord!!! That is 8 mins and 26 sec. I will never get back in my life…. :wallbash_tb:

  40. 40 sumidol Aug 1st, 2008 at 9:50 pm

Well thats 8 minutes I wish I could spend with them - from the sounds of most of the comments it would be fun to watch. I can’t get the stupid thing to load and play all the way thru though - dammmmmmit!

  41. 41 jan Aug 1st, 2008 at 9:50 pm

Ha ha - they all looked so awkward - poor Ramiele couldn’t see over the stand - and did they forget to call Brooke at first?

  42. 42 SilentLucidity Aug 2nd, 2008 at 12:40 am

That was random, awkward, and hilarious at the same time :P .. Chikezie was the only one who dressed for the occasion :lol_tb:

  43. 43 cooktard76 Aug 2nd, 2008 at 7:19 am

I think this is the most hillarious post I’ve ever read! The one upthread about thinking Nascar insteand of NADDAQ, I’m still cracking up.
On that note, coming from an extremely fanatic Nascar family, I wouldnt mind seeing Cookie do the “Gentlemen, start your engines” line for an upcoming race. =)
    Taylor did it.

  44. 44 sciencefan Aug 2nd, 2008 at 7:37 am

Chikezie used to dress pretty nice for the competition, too.
    Remember his “orange” suit?
-which by the way - I thought was really nice looking on him.

  45. 45 bean99 Aug 2nd, 2008 at 7:42 am

That was the strangest AI thing I’ve ever watched. :blink_tb: Nice to see the reaction to Michael. I guess they must get used to doing PR as the price they pay but I’m sure it gets boring.

  46. 46 awilliams Aug 2nd, 2008 at 6:30 pm

Well that was wierd. I wonder if Mr. NASDAQ spokeman goes home and does Guitar Hero in front of his mirror….Jason was funny gesturing to that little girl to move over. Didn’t he help coach kids in soccer…he’s prolly used to little kids. Cook was well spoken as usual.

“I immediately thought “the Muppets take Manhattan!” Fun PR stunt, totally unrelated to music, and I wonder if they’ll invade MTV this afternoon!”

Hahahah, now that is funny. Too bad The Muppet Show isn’t made anymore. That would have been soooo much fun to have the Idols on that. Betcha they would’ve had a blast too. All the top rock stars used to try and get on with Miss Piggy.
