American Idols Live! 2008 - Tampa, FL

The Idols finish their tour of the Southeast in Tampa, FL tonight. They fly out of Florida directly after the show tonight for a 2-day tour break before they pick up again in Texas on Sunday. Today there was a big Meet and Greet for everyone out at the buses between 2-4 that was advertised on the news. All the Idols came out to sign and chat with fans.

Whatever you have–videos, pictures, re-caps, post here. It’s your thread-discuss! And, if you send your stuff to me at mjsbigblog at gmail.com, I’ll post it on the front page…

    Karate chops…or something…Mavid.

    So, here’s my Tampa recap……

Um, I don’t have one. I didn’t get to go! As unbelievable odds would have it - my babysitter actually got in an accident on the way here. She’s fine - the car not so much. Obviously, I was more concerned about her, than my missing a concert, because for a teenage girl - your first accident can be pretty traumatizing.

In between talking to her on the phone and trying to make her feel better, I did get many an awesome text from the super-awesome Sarah. And, she cell-certed me a little Jason, so that was great. Sarah tried to call me during Brooke’s set - but alas, I was doing bath time (okay, I may have shed a small tear then - sorry Brooke - I love you!).

I just talked to Sarah on the phone, and they’re on their way back to Orlando. I’m sure she’ll have a fabulous recap for you all because I know she had a fantastic time.

Thanks again Sarah for thinking of me at home with my little sad self. You’re a true pal.

AWWW, Spense. :-( One day you’ll see both Brooke and Jason in a better venue! Promise!

  4. 4 IGetCranked Aug 21st, 2008 at 11:16 pm

I’m so sorry SpenserJ. I didn’t go when I could have, so at least your dissapointment isn’t from stupidity like me. :dunce_tb: I’m really glad your babysitter is ok because then you would have felt way worse.

Darn Archie and his little jacket tease!

    My condolences too Spence.

I am so sorry Spense, I am sad too. I didn’t get to go either because of the storm. I was going to get tickets last minute and drive to Tampa from Jacksonville but I didn’t want to go through all the wind and rain. Oh well, I will have to catch the idols another time or make a long trip to another state. It kind of sucks because I really wanted to see MJ, Carly, Jason, Cookie and of course Archie. Why couldn’t they come to Jacksonville like last year.

Well we were their in spirit then, lol. “Darn Archie and his little jacket tease!”
Yeah I was hoping it was gone too. ;)

Awwww Spense! Sorry you didn’t get to go, but glad to hear that your babysitter is OK. Your first accident as a teenager is VERY traumatizing (I speak from experience!). Glad Sarah came through with some audio for you :)

  8. 8 pj Aug 21st, 2008 at 11:34 pm

KK, I know. I hit an elderly couple trying to go home from their clogging event in my first accident at 16. It was a side street thingie. No one was hurt, but I can’t forget those outfits.

  9. 9 SpenserJ Aug 22nd, 2008 at 12:11 am

I was going to get tickets last minute and drive to Tampa from Jacksonville but I didn’t want to go through all the wind and rain.

That was a wise decision my friend - no need to drive through that crap if you don’t have to.

I can still remember my first accident when I was 16 - every gosh darn second of it. So, I really did empathize. Plus, she’s a kick-ass babysitter and an all around fantastic teenager, so my mama-love was in full force for her tonight.

I appreciate all of your condolences (MJ peeps are the best!). And yes PJ - I do so hope that I get the chance to see Brooke & Jason again (I have no doubt that I’ll get the chance to see Cookie too).

Of course I told Mr. Spense that this was all his fault for being out of town! So, his punishment will have to be me going to a Chicago show sometime - don’t you think that’s fair PJ?

Apparently, only Jason & Archie were able to go out & meet fans after the show.

The fun part was after the show; all the fangirls went the wrong way, and it was open season to meet everyone. The only one outside was Jason Castro; he was really nice, he was signing stuff and letting people hug him if they felt so inclined. He had to go but he mentioned David Archuleta would be coming out later, but everyone else had to catch a plane to Houston.

Anyway David Archuleta and his dad came out… the way this douche was acting you’d think Jeff was the Idol. David was doing his awkward little laugh and pacing about nervously, while his dad posed for pictures and signed autographs

So the first thing I have to say is thank GOD for sunshine. I saw my first glimpse of it in FOUR DAYS as I was arriving in Tampa this afternoon, and it immediately put me in an even better mood than the one I was already sporting from having scored last minute tix on the 6th row floor on the “Mavid Side” of the stage.

The next thing I have to say is that Tampa LURVES them some David Cook. Other people got plenty of screams too, but the ones for David Cook were seriously deafening. I, ahem, did my part to add to the love he was receiving, but seriously - it was insane. He even made a little comment about it on stage - something to the effect of thanking people for the cheers and stuff, and then saying “it’s kinda weird… the two people preceding me both have connections to this area, but I don’t. But I have been here before. Family vacation.” Heh. His banter was cracking me up. One particular thing - after he finished the whole filming the audience thing, he comes back and says, “so someone out there while I was doing this had a “marry me Jason” sign. I didn’t realize we looked so much alike!” Crack. Me. UP! He also took me to the other end of the spectrum - getting all teary eyed when he talked about Lindsey Rose - the little girl from Tampa with leukemia whose father is a personality on the Tampa Fox station, and gave him the orange bracelet he always wore on the show. It was so sweet - he dedicated “My Hero” tonight to both her and his brother.

Yes, the Mavid “dance” was karate chops. MJ had a piece of cardboard that said “DC” on it, and DC karate-chopped it, and vice versa. Sweet.

Random observations - besides that the words “we will rock you” were on the screen behind Michael during his performance to begin with, it really bugged that them flashing up was out of sync with the singing. LOL. Other than that, Michael was great. I really enjoy him, but I definitely prefer when he sings bluesy stuff.

Archie got great big cheers for “Stand By Me.” That was probably my favorite of his songs. He did a really great job with it - and all of his songs, really. He was really out of breath between songs though, but sounded great singing. He also got a ton of love from the crowd tonight. I think the biggest non-teen Archie fan in the world was sitting behind me. My ears were ringing from her, and from all the squealing.

Carly can freaking wail. I. lurve. that. woman. ‘Nuff said. “Crazy On You” was the first time on the show that I really started coming around to her, and it still rocks my world. She killed it. She said that some of her husband’s family was in the audience tonight. Awwww.

Ramiele’s stage presence has grown leaps and bounds. She sounded good on the first two songs, but I just think the Maroon 5 song was an ill-advised song choice for her. Her family was sitting a couple rows up from me, I think. At least, it looked like her dad, and there was a girl with them who looked just like her.

Weirdly, Kristy got a bunch of cheers (not that she’s not good, just that it kinda surprised me). It seemed to kind of surprise her too - at one point after a song and sustained cheering she kinda had this look on her face like “Wow. Seriously? You like me?” She’s got sass and can work the stage pretty well, but she does still have that weird wide-leg stance.

Jason is a pure bundle of joy. I just lurve him to death. Jason cracked me up with the way before he started SOTR, he just kinda deadpanned “thanks for coming to the second half of our showwww” in the way that only Jason can do. I missed his banter between SOTR and Crazy because I was saying bye to Spense. :)

Brooke sounded really great, and she’s just a joy on the stage as well. I think as a whole set, I like hers the best. The songs just all fit her so well. “Yellow” was a highlight. Love her version of that. And I cheered extra loud for her for you, Spense. :)

Chikezie is really seeming to come out of his shell. One of my favorite moments of the night was when they each come to the end of the front catwalk the finale time, he just kinda stops and does the robot during his face time. A. dor. a. ble! Love him. He was really good tonight. Full of energy and a lotta fun.

Syesha got a lot of love from her hometown crowd. She said her family was in the audience and she seemed really glad to have them there. Honestly, I know everyone likes “Listen”, but I like “If I Ain’t Got You” better. Just my personal preference. IMO, she gets kinda screechy on “Listen.” But she was really good.

I think that’s it. Not sure how good my pics will be as, though I had great seats, I have a crappy camera. But I got a ton of them, so hopefully some will turn out. The teenage guy sitting next to me with the “Marry Me Carly” sign (which she acknowledged, but then had to disappoint him by saying that she’s already married, lol) seemed to be taking some good pics and videos, so if they end up on youtube, and you hear some insane screaming (omg I even squealed a little *hangs head in shame*), please try to ignore it. LOL.

OH! Corey the Warm Up Guy made a hilarious comment during intermission when he was doing the Air Guitar Hero things with the kids. One of the kids, a little boy, got up there and Corey asked his name (don’t remember), his age (8), and “what he does” (swim). So Corey was like, “so you wanna be Michael Phelps, huh?” and the little boy’s like “YEAH!” And he was like, “so in *tries to calculate years and fails*, so yeah, you could be over in China now, competing… only you’d have to be a Chinese gymnast.” My friend and I DIED out laughing. I think that’s the only truly funny thing I’ve ever heard/read Corey say.

I had a blast, but it would have been even better if Spense hadn’t been stuck at home. :( I’m glad I was able to call you with a little Jason love though. I felt so badly that you weren’t there. :(

Now, I’m back to the rain (I’m ready for Fay to get her ass OUT of Florida). Yay. At least I got a brief break from it and a fun night at the show. :)

LMAO, I could swear that big scream at :27 is me - what you hear right before DC is about to start his solo line. I screamed right at that spot, and that videographer is really close to where I was sitting LOL.

Thanks for the recap Sarah. I especially enjoy hearing what the banter was. It can be so difficult to understand on videos (if you get it at all).

Here’s that news story from My Fox Tampa Bay.

I watched that video and I am just floored. David just continues to prove that he is the mensch that he is purported to be.

Sarah, thanks for the recap! I’m a jellus h8er right now.

Here are some great pics from the Orlando Metromix.

i am late to post but terrible weather has keep me away…i do not post often but i was at the concert last night and a few notes…
    1. the set is sooo much better than season five…skipped last year.
2.everyone knows the program so i will not reveiw by order but the show seemed to be in two parts -the warm-up and david cook. the preformances were that different.
    3. the crowd seemed older than the last time i went with a lot more men.
4.i took my husband…his first idol concert. he does watch the program and he will vote if so moved. i thought he was ready for this live experience after watching for three seasons. while watching tv he would even tear up when brook teared up, of course he does cry during some commercials too.
so as we progress through the count down i could tell he was bored. i heard the normal it’s too loud to unique do you know they sell cotton candy here? i jusy knew as we got close to brooke he would perk up. the beautiful yellow lights began with yellow twirling and swirling pulsation deafing music
hitting us in the face…did i mention we were in row twenty in the middle? i looked over and what did i see..the only human being in the universe who could fall asleep in this place. what could i do? i hit him and he open his eyes like where am i . at this point i could not quite remember why i married him.
5.during the intermission i heard more than one person say..
that cook girl sure is pretty…that is southern speak for WHAT! was that? someone might have mentioned to her that Tampa is the location of macdill air force base head of the southern command group…you know just an idea.
6.second half better husband liked jason who for all appearances is able to sing sound asleep with his eyes open
and can not see the sweet beautiful girl who made a poster of herself as the bride and jason as the groom she held as high as she could every time he looked her way but nothing seemed to register…that might be difficult to work into the future life of a normal person which is were jason will find himself if he does not WAKE UP!
7.husband says hard to listen to syesha because outfit makes her look like she has chicken legs.
    8. the real concert…by the way he did stand for this part to the horror of those behind him as he is 6′3″ tall. david cook is a real artist. he preforms with abandon and gratitude. as an artist myself (this accounts for all spelling and grammer mistakes that i do not want to hear about) it is exciting and humbling to see someone so young with so much talent who realizes how he got there. this is why i went to the concert
    and i was not disappointed.
9.after we got to the car and i heard how boring and loud it was…after my promise that he would never have to come again…afer getting through the traffic and hitting I-75 southbound and after many miles in the dark stomy nite he finally said…i would make all those hundreds of phone calls you made me make again…he was that good.
10.so i forgave him for sleeping.

  21. 21 cookcricket Aug 22nd, 2008 at 9:54 pm

Awww fla, I loved your recap! Thank you so much! My husband went with me too, but he did enjoy all of the others a little more than yours.

How sweet for him to acknowledge what an awesome artist DC is! If you’re like me, I cannot wait to see him on his solo tour!

Sorry for your nasty Florida weather.

    Thanks again!

  22. 22 EmmaJK Aug 22nd, 2008 at 10:56 pm

Thanks for the fun (and funny) recap, fla. Hope the weather clears for you real soon!

but the show seemed to be in two parts -the warm-up and david cook. the preformances were that different.

As a Cookie lover, I like this assessment. I’ve heard/read others say the exact same thing.

the only human being in the universe who could fall asleep in this place. what could i do? i hit him and he open his eyes like where am i .

And, as a married woman, I BWAH at this. My husband once fell asleep at a White Snake/Scorpions concert. I will never let him forget it.
