To be honest, Adam isn't really grabbing his crotch. He's teasingly stroking around and on the crotch area. It's kinda hot, IMO.

It's nothing like the youtube .38 video where he is actually grabbing Little Adam.

I'm confused, did Adam grab his crotch or did he hump the mic stand? Or maybe he did both. lol. I haven't seen the videos actually.

Clay Aiken caresses the mic stand and humps his co-singers (female) and his fans love it (it never did anything for me). And he's a religious role model, according to himself.

I admit right now that I don't like crotch grabbing, I think it's gross, and it always seemed to me that Michael Jackson was the one to popularize that particular move. But massaging the mic stand, that's not so bad, unless they go overboard, and then it's just laughable.

Clearly everyone has their own perception of whether or not AI is a family show. Points can be made on both sides. Maybe Fox should decide, and market it clearly one way or the other, or put out some sort of disclaimer when advertising the tour, so parents will know what to expect.

It doesn't sound like a big deal unless you are sitting in the front row. It's probably one small gesture in a 3-hour concert. Basically I don't like seeing little kids at these shows, which is why I hardly ever go to them. I like concerts for adults, not kiddie shows. A lot of parents don't even notice when their kids are making noise and fidgeting during heartfelt ballads for instance and it's very distracting.

Finally, in some ways yes America is too prudish, in other ways, it's pretty discouraging the crap that goes on that kids are exposed to on tv and internet. A lot of that stuff even adults shouldn't watch, especially when it's violent, graphic, and sick. As a nation we seem far more obsessed with violence and murder than with sex. Healthy sexuality is nothing to be afraid of.

Yesterday I was talking to my gay friends about Adam (they've never heard of him) and they were really surprised that so many women were excited about him - I had to explain to them that he is just as universally sexy, as let's say Marylin Monroe was to many gays - and they totally understood... :)

They are ending the tour in the East Coast, and as I understand that is where another solid block of Adam's rabid fan base is. I envy those people. Adam will probably hurl them to to the outer space of human sensuality with no ride back.

I sure hope so! LOL

LOL! I also second that, as one of those east coast go-ers :-)

I hadn't heard about the previous year stuff as much, especially the Constantine antics (that was before I started following the show). So I guess Adam is hardly the first, or the last.

I may not care if Adam humps the mike or grabs his crotch but I don't since he didn't display that level of so-called raunch on the show

Adam humped the mic on the show. Danny treated us to his pelvic thrusts. I won't get into the guest stars and their antics. I think if you watch the show with any attention, the tour probably is about par with what you see on television. Haven't seen it yet... just vids.

Yikes. Is it me or is this way away from the original point... which is that people may show up to the AI concert expecting the contestants behavior to be in line with the kind of things those contestants are allowed to do on the TV show. It is not about what any one of us personally thinks is offensive, whether anyone is a "prude" or whether Adam is a bad guy.. to me those are all value judgements that have nothing to do with the topic. I may not care if Adam humps the mike or grabs his crotch but I don't since he didn't display that level of so-called raunch on the show, I could see how someone might not expect to see that at the concert. And they may have a point, to me at least.

So in the big arenas his act may come across as milder.

I believe that may be the case.

Well AI used to be known as a family show. And back in the day, a huge number of tween girls attended the tour (ages 7-12). And the videos I saw of Adam grabbing his penis during WLL were way OTT for a "family show." I don't really care what rockers or rappers do at their concerts. I'm sure the raunch factor is through the roof. For an Idol concert, Adam's act looks vulgar and OTT.

However, that may be the videos because no reviewer has mentioned it. So in the big arenas his act may come across as milder.

No insult to anybody but I don't really care that in Country X we are accustomed to public nudity and you Americans are so prudish...etc. Different strokes for different folks so to speak.

For the people that are getting all bent out of shape over Adam's performances and thinking that it will scar their children for life should have to spend a few days in elementary, jr. high and high schools. I have seen 4th graders grab their crotch and tell another student "Bite me!" and some worse. Believe me, most people do not realize what the public schools are like nowadays and what exactly goes on in those schools on a daily basis. Prescription and illegal drugs are rampant and the language a lot of the "good" kids use at home is not what they use outside of their home including in elementary school. Just follow some kids, tweens and up in the mall and you will get an ear and eye full. Kids are much more aware of things now than ever before.

So I'm not talking about Adam here, talking about Matt freaking Giraud. Holy cow, did anyone else besides me check out the Hard to Handle VIDEO in Oakland, possibly the best one YET, imo. I mean seriously, that piano solo is amazing, holy shit. The performance is just amazing, and better everytime as well. I cant get enough of it.

But again, my original point is that the expectation by some families of a family-friendly environment on the tour isn't silly.

I agree with that.

I don't agree, however, with the posts above by others suggesting that the show did not "warn" of what might be possible on tour. Adam did Ring of Fire, after all. :-) Love it or hate it, that performance was undeniably suggestive and sensual -- even w/o the neck raring back, lip-licking, and "accidental" flipping of the shirt while feeling his way, so to speak. LOL And he did WLL on the show, too -- with the acapella "Woman...." and all that goes with that, except now he's adding a mic stand, that literally adds very little, imo. He did quite a mighty hip thrust in PTFM, as I recall, and he came dangerously close to a crotch grab on Satisfaction too. So...

In my view, no one's coming in ignorant to the possibilities unless they did not watch the show. And if that's the case, the problem is not about Idol providing mixed messages about what to expect this year, from this group.

Ultimately, I think it's a tempest in a teapot. Because young kids are not going to get it, and if they do, "protecting" them ended long before Adam hit the stage.

In my view, no one’s coming in ignorant to the possibilities unless they did not watch the show. And if that’s the case, the problem is not about Idol providing mixed messages about what to expect this year, from this group.

Ultimately, I think it’s a tempest in a teapot. Because young kids are not going to get it, and if they do, “protecting” them ended long before Adam hit the stage.

Even in my limited experience and understanding, I would agree with this' ¦ but for the Rollingstone cover story. I think this year, somebody decided that it might be better to let the artists be more themselves prior to their debut albums.

The cover was a bit suggestive, but I didn't see anything racy or crazy or different than what we've seen before in that Rolling Stone cover story.

The most surprising aspect of that article was that he was able to talk about his sexual preference. And all things considered (Ellen, Elton et al) not really all that surprising.

But again, my original point is that the expectation by some families of a family-friendly environment on the tour isn't silly.

They are ending the tour in the East Coast, and as I understand that is where another solid block of Adam's rabid fan base is. I envy those people. Adam will probably hurl them to to the outer space of human sensuality with no ride back.

I sure hope so! LOL :biggrin_wp:

Very varied and quite significant points of views being presented here.

I asked earlier in a post about Utah's possible reception of Adam. I have not been there, though I have several Mormon friends from Utah. They are more conservative than the Roman Catholics I know. But they are also among the kindest I have met and when confronted with new sets of experience are more amiable in their reaction. This probably is not a generalization but this is our personal experience.

As I think more on this topic, The American Idol TV show is foremost a business and fueled by profits. The TV show's primary earnings are from advertisements and other related business franchises like Disney. I would tend to think that the show's restrictions would be based on the advertisers and franchise guidelines.

When I first saw Adam perform I kept wondering how AI would fit him in Disney if he wins. Can you imagine Adam in full Glam glory parading down Disney's main street to the tune it's a Small world after all?

But the concerts would be another matter. The revenues are from ticket sales mostly. Adam and his controversial presence in AI would draw both fans and the curious and provide reason for young male teens to hang around the mom's and sisters for these concerts.

True there are sponsors but the concerts would be the precursor to these aspirants' recording careers. I think more risks would be taken here. From a market test point of view, I tend to think the producers will not leash Adam.

People evolve. Their tastes in music evolve. So will American Idol evolve? If it cannot evolve with the people's changing tastes and perceptions, its revenues will erode, it will then be time to put it to rest.

The kids will have to wait until august to let it all hang out.

Even in my limited experience and understanding, I would agree with this... but for the Rollingstone cover story. I think this year, somebody decided that it might be better to let the artists be more themselves prior to their debut albums.

Maybe not, but maybe.

Certainly, for any number of reasons, a distinction can be made about a magazine and a concert. But still, when it hit the shelves,I read that article as a departure from the AI of past. And now, watching the concert unfold, I see something similar.

Maybe a change was inevitable given the media hype and all. And maybe someone realized it's better for a future recording artist to be authentically packaged and branded from the get-go. Maybe Adam is not completely containable. Who knows. To me, though, it seems a legitimate decision made by a higher power, that's all. :-)

Adam could be censored and told, as Elvis was, that he had to stand perfectly still, and he'd still cause huge screams just be moving his pinky - a.k.a. Elvis.

Doesn't matter what the man does. He exudes sexuality.

I'm one of those, as I have said before, that really giggle about American Idol being a family rated and family friendly show. Especially during the audition episodes when we see all kinds of overtly revealing attire and pretty sexually explicit behavior, and the use of the bleeps and the AI logo to cover up words or gestures that are obviously highly inflammatory. This year we got to see a woman throw herself at the judges table, begging and we got to see another contestant use her body as her path to 15 minutes of fame.

We hear back stories that are often pretty graphic and tumultuous and probably not proper listening for the under teen set. And the inuendos and sexually explicit jokes that are bantered about between Simon and Ryan and Simon and Paula are pretty adult....and no one can tell me that Paula dresses with a 12 year old highly impressionable girl in mind....no its all about appealling to the young bucks that she finds attractive.

The discussion has already been carried on about the choice of "guest" singers and their song choices. And the commercials run during the program are not always geared to the "G" rated families out in tv land.

As for the tour....we can't even mention some of the clothes worn by the Idol girls and the shirts unbottoned to here that some of the guys have worn. And contestants like Constantine made come hither eye movements at the camera and the audience that were easily taken out of chapter 6 of the paperback "how to have sex with your eyes alone". And some of the Mavis routines last year weren't always family friendly.

Taking a tween or younger to a concert is up to the discretion of an adult. And if said adult thinks an idol's song styling or look is too suggestive for the juvenile it is their responsibility to make choices about what the child is exposed to. AI is not a disney show, it is shown at the same time as many FOX programs which are pretty violent and suggestive, and it is not advertised as being "family" friendly. If people think it is or should be that is their take on the show...not the networks or the producers. Same for the Idol tour.

Or' ¦they could just watch reruns of Idol this year to see guest performers like Flo-Rida who sang a song about oral sex. . .

I have to admit, I raised my eyebrow at that.

At any rate, you'd never find any of the kids singing songs like that. When the kids performed Pink's "So What"as a group song, it had all the references to alcohol edited out of it, for instance.

Personally, I don't really care. But I'm just making the point that the tour is an extension of the show, therefore it's perfectly reasonable for folks bringing their young kids to the concert to expect a family-friendly experience.

ETA:

Interesting discussion! Just my two cents -- nothing could be more gross than what Constantine Maroulis did on the Season 4 tour: leaned down from the stage so the women could touch his sweaty chest (with shirt unbuttoned).

I forgot about that. Yes, Constantine's performance was kinda sexualized, and became moreso as the tour wore on.

At certain concert spots, he had a pair of female groupies in the front row, indulging in a little "girl on girl" action, just for him. Family friendly indeed. LOL.

Another two cents -- children may have no idea about the meaning of certain gestures on stage or scenes in movies, but nothing wrong with parents having standards about what they want their children exposed to. Let them be little, I think the country song says. I agree that AI, for a "family show", had a bizarre slate of guest performers this season.

He is not copying Adam with the mic stand. Danny does a little salsa dance routine where the mic stand is analogous to a dance partner, and he steps and swings around it. Adam is doing the mic stand as a phallic symbol.

Josie, yeah, I've noticed some trying to say that in the last day or so, as if Danny all of a sudden started doing this. But as I said, Danny has been doing that since the first show....during the salsa dancing part. And it's not really overtly sexual, unless someone wants it to be. It's really what your mind makes of it.

Adam's is more overtly sexual, but so are some of his songs. It works with his set. Again, I'm not offended.

I wonder if the choreographer that they worked with helped to instruct them with their moves here. I know Danny already knew how to salsa dance, but how to make that come off right without a human partner, probably not so much. I would assume that the choreograper helped him with this.

I was at the show last night and around 6pm right before the show while standing in line I was surprised to look up and see Danny Gokey 3 feet away from me talking to fans waiting in line. He was very nice and interactive and gave me a hug (and came back and gave me a second hug after I remembered I forgot to take a picture the first time.) He also spent a lot of time on the fan line after the show and took many pics (some of the Idols were not taking pics with fans at all.)

I am a Kradison fan but I was most impressed with Danny's fan interaction last night. Adam only worked half of the line and his was the only autograph I didn't get (but I am still a major fantard.) Danny gets a bum wrap and so I just wanted to throw it out there what a sweetheart he was last night.

BTW, he is also way cuter in person than I ever thought he was on the show. And his talking was not preachy, it was more paying homage to his love for his wife and encouragement to people to not let hard times hold you back. I found it touching and appropriate. Now I am a DaKradison fan.

Thanks so much madnessinmotion for posting the kind words about Danny. It's been tough in Internet land for Danny and Danny fans for sure....appreciate you taking the time to post.

He was very nice and interactive and gave me a hug (and came back and gave me a second hug after I remembered I forgot to take a picture the first time.) He also spent a lot of time on the fan line after the show and took many pics (some of the Idols were not taking pics with fans at all.)

I am a Kradison fan but I was most impressed with Danny’s fan interaction last night. Adam only worked half of the line and his was the only autograph I didn’t get (but I am still a major fantard.) Danny gets a bum wrap and so I just wanted to throw it out there what a sweetheart he was last night.

BTW, he is also way cuter in person than I ever thought he was on the show. And his talking was not preachy, it was more paying homage to his love for his wife and encouragement to people to not let hard times hold you back. I found it touching and appropriate. Now I am a DaKradison fan.

Maybe American Idol is just doing their part to help parents begin those awkward discussions about the B&B's with their kids. :ponder_tb:

Or' ¦they could just watch reruns of Idol this year to see guest performers like Flo-Rida who sang a song about oral sex. . .

Hahaha!! EXCELLENT POINT!!! :clap_tb:

From my understanding, Anoop does some sexy moves and Danny is now straddling the mic. I haven't seen the show so I don't know for sure but that is what I read. The only difference is fans aren't going on about Danny and Anoop's moves. Also, with those thigh high boots, Megan is looking like a wee bit of a street walker. And isn't Allison wearing a corset with garter belts for Slow Ride?

Actually Danny has been doing that since the first night in the Maria Maria song.

But yeah, I do think that Adam is much more overtly doing sexual things than Danny or the others, but it fits his songs better, too. I haven't been offended by anything I've seen, but I have found it amusing. I tend to think it's funny when guys "try" to be sexy, and they all do try, don't they?

I really haven't given that much thought to the kid thing. My daughter is only two. I think the mic straddling would go over the heads of most younger kids (up to 9 or so, at least), though.
