2008 American Music Awards - Live Blog! - Carrie Underwood, Daughtry, Jordin Sparks Winners

Idols certainly did not go away empty handed from the 2008 American Music Awards tonight. Motley Crue presented Daughtry with the Favorite Pop/Rock Duo or Group award. They shut out The Eagles and Coldplay.

Idols took a couple awards presented off camera: Carrie Underwood won Favorite Album - Country Music for Carnival Ride, beating out Garth Brooks, Ultimate Hits, and Rascal Flatts, Still Feels Good. And newcomer, Jordin Sparks beat out fellow Idol Daughtry and the Eagles for Best Artist - Adult Contemporary.

Carrie Underwood lost Favorite Female Country Artist to Taylor Swift. That was bound to happen. Bet Taylor cleans up at the Grammy’s and next year’s CMA’s too…

Full list of AMA winners, HERE.

Live blog below:

Daughtry, Carrie Underwood, and Jordin Sparks are nominated for awards.  David Cook and David Archuleta will be presenting.  I’ll be attempting to keep track of it all!  Stay tuned for updates, photos and video right here…

Live blog, video, photos after the JUMP…

ETA: By popular demand, more videos. Click on the links to watch: Christina, Pink, Annie Lennox, Sara McLachlan and Pink, Coldplay, The Fray, Kanye, The Jonas Brothers, Natasha, Alicia Keys. Archie joke is at the end of Alicia clip…

Christina Aguilera opens the AMA’s with her “7 songs in 7 minutes medley. Spectacular! Fav: “Ain’t No Other Man”.

Jimmy Kimmel is tonight’s host. He’s usually pretty funny. It will be so sad when Jay Leno takes his time slot next year. You know that’s going to happen. “Katy Perry kissed a girl. Clay Aiken did not.” ha ha. Uh oh. Jimmy made a Jonas Brothers virgin joke! “This is not the place for David Archuleta to learn the F word….David reminds me a lot of myself when I was 8″ OK, I have to put up a vid of this opening monologue now…

New Kids on the Block perform. So past their expiration date… Too bad Donnie Wahlberg couldn’t get that acting career together.

Scott Wieland, staring hard at the teleprompter, introduces the marvelous Pink. Ironically, she’s performing “Sober”. Hopefully, that’s what Scott Wieland is… As always, Pink is FABULOUS.

David Cook introduces the Princess of Country, Taylor Swift. She performs “Fearless.” She’s stiff and tuneless when she sings live. Thank Jeebus for autotune!

Ne-Yo performs. Boy, does he. Great performer, and his song “Closer” is a hot R&B confection. “Miss Independent” is also pretty jammin’.

Jesse McCartney introduces Leona Lewis. She performs “Better in Time”. Yippy yappy yip yip! It’s called vocal gymnastics, y’all.

Billy Ray Cyrus introduces his “little girl” Miley. She sings “Fly on the Wall” Gah, she’s horrible. Billy can’t think she’s too little if he condones her hooking up with 20 year olds.

Coldplay is next. I do like them, but Chris Martin sounds kind of like a wounded animal in heat tonight. Whoops.

Terrance Howard introduces Mariah Carey. More vocal gymnastics coming our way! OK, that was actually pretty fierce, girlfriend. Good job, Mimi.

Next, Kate Walsh from “Private Practice,” a show that nobody watches, introduces The Fray… Coldplay Part 2!

Jimmy Kimmel introduces The Dream…He wants to choke the Jonas Brothers? Oookay. He introduces Beyonce performing “Single Ladies.” Time for the latest dance craze! To be performed at the next wedding you attend!

Demi Lovato introduce the Jonas Brothers. Such cute little teenaged rockers! Not singing in key, but none of the rock groups managed that tonight, so they get a pass.

Not so cute…the no-talent Pussycat Dolls. Gah, get off my TV! Ha…ha…ha…ha… SOB.

Now it’s Ali Landry and the Old Navy Fashion Report. Zzzzz….

Jimmy Kimmel introduces Justin Timberlake as a “surprise” guest. He’s been enlisted to give an award to the great Annie Lennox. Annie Lennox >>>>> Justin Timberlake. I’m just sayin’. Damn, Annie is just spectacular. There really are no words. THAT’S how you sing a song with emotion, and passion. TAKE NOTES KIDS. Justin Timberlake presents Annie with the Humanitarian award. She thanks Simon Fuller and 19…

Natasha Bedingfield takes the stage, and yes, it is unfortunate she has to follow the great Annie Lennox, but she’s OK. Natasha has a great recording voice. When you hear her on the radio, you know exactly who she is. She sings a medley of songs, “Unwritten”, “Pocketful of Sunshine” and “Soulmate”

It’s Rihanna’s turn. She performs “Rehab”, and inexplicably, she’s got a silver eye patch on. Won’t she trip on the stairs? She looks like Prince in that getup. Prince is a boy–maybe that’s not so good.

Kanye West performs “Heartless”. Sure, he’s a douchebag, but you can’t deny the guy his talent.

For some contrast, Sarah McLachlan sings “Arms of an Angel”…with Pink! Sarah, gal of the 90’s and not so famous anymore, needs a little help.

Alicia Keys performs “Superwoman” with surprise guests…Queen Latifa and….Kathleen Battle? What the hell? Ok, now this is just plain weird. Queen Latifa raps a shoutout to Jennifer Hudson and her family…

And on that very strange note…The AMA’s are over. After Jimmy Kimmel makes a joke about putting David Archuleta to bed…

The Awards:

  • Jamie Foxx presents Favorite Female Artist - Soul Rhythm and Blues Music (Rihanna, Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys) to Rihanna. She won the same category last year.
  • Paris Hilton and T-Pain (ridiculous!) presents Favorite Pop Rock Artist (Chris Brown, Kid Rock, Usher) to…Chris Brown
  • Lance Bass presents Favorite Country Band Duo or Group (Brooks and Dunn, Rascal Flatts, Sugarland) to Rascal Flatts. This is the second time they’ve won the award. Sugarland should have won, if you ask me.
  • Nickleback presents Favorite Rap Hip Hop Album (Jay-Z, Kanye West, Little Wayne) to Kanye West for Graduation. It’s his first win at the AMA’s. Damn, no hissy fit from Kanye tonight! Kanye wants to be Elvis. Lolz!
  • David Archuleta and Shailene Woodley present Favorite Male Country Artist (Garth Brooks, Brad Paisley, Kenny Chesney) to Brad Paisley.
  • Colbie Caillat and Richie Sambora present Best Pop Rock Album (Alicia Keys, As I Am, Coldplay, Vida La Vida, Eagles, Long Road Out of Eden) to Alicia Keys, As I Am
  • Nick Lachey and Scrub’s Sarah Chalke present Favorite Country Female Artist (Carrie Underwood, Reba McEntire, Taylor Swift) to Taylor Swift! DAMN Taylor Swift kicked Carrie Underwood’s Ass! OMG it’s the first AMA she’s every won!! Eleventy ONEEE!!!!!
  • Daughtry presents Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist (Alicia Keys, Mariah Carey, Rihanna) to Rihanna. This is her second win tonight. Daughtry are not jealous at all!
  • Jordin Sparks and Enrique Inglesias presents Favorite Rap/Hip Hop Male Artist (Flo-Rida, Kanye West, Lil Wayne) to Kanye West. Jordin stuck to the script. Good girl! Enrique congratulated her on her “win”. Hm. More blah blah from Kanye. He wants to give the award to Wayne. Whatever!
  • Ashley Tisdale presents the T-Mobile Breakthrough Artist Award. Voting closed just a few minutes ago! (Colbie Caillat, Flo-Rida, Jonas Brothers, Paramore and The Dream) to The Jonas Brothers. They are damn lucky there were no Idols in the category…
  • Akon and Julianne Hough present Favorite Album - Soul/R&B (Mary J. Blige, Growing Pains, Alicia Keys, As I Am, Mariah Carey, E=MC2 to Alicia Keys, As I Am
  • Motley Crue presents Favorite Pop/Rock Duo or Group (Coldplay, Daughtry, Eagles) to…Daughtry. They won 3 last year. Unfortunately, Coldplay and The Eagles’ fans’ didn’t figure out how to clear their cookies
  • Steven Tyler and Joe Perry present Artist of the Year (Alicia Keys, Chris Brown, Coldplay, The Eagles, Lil Wayne) to Chris Brown. He wants to give it to Coldplay. What’s with peeps not wanting their awards tonight? It’s his third award this eventing.

BTW, if anyone wants to write up a re-cap of the event, I’ll post it out front. :).

  2. 202 cookcricket Nov 24th, 2008 at 10:47 pm

Thanks for posting the extra vids mj. I’m watching some of them now since I didn’t finish watching the show.

Someone mentioned earlie that the JBs looked pissed at Jimmy Kimmel’s opening remarks, I just thought they looked like, “Yeah, that’s to be expected, just not sure how to respond, Oh well.”

BTW, I’d love to read any recaps of those who were there. Esp. DC and band on the red carpet. Thanks!

  3. 203 hypertwink Nov 24th, 2008 at 11:12 pm

I agree, cookcricket. They weren’t so much pissed as they were like “Um, didn’t Russell Brand do this already? Oh, you’re going to do it too…m’kay.” I think Jimmy was funny but it almost went overboard with the young/teen jokes (like Archie and the JoBros).

One thing that I thought was going to be dicey was the whole Joe/Taylor and Nick/Miley breakup bit. Good thing, not much came out of it, which was surprising since Joe and Taylor are still in the “You fucked it up. No, you did” blaming game.

No recap, but I did watch it and here are a few observations. First, I am an award show junkie, and I look forward to this show particularly because the entertainment is usually pretty great, but for me this year was a bit disappointing. The highlight of the entire evening, for me, was David Cook and the band singing on the red carpet. It was fun to see the few people they interviewed. I did enjoy hearing Daughtry and seeing the members of the band. The whole time they were talking to the Jonas Brothers I was trying to see if David Cook (behind them in the background) was with Kimberly. Loved “Declaration”. Hated that they cut it off mid way through for a ridiculous commercial, the product I can’t remember, and would probably never buy even if I did because I was so annoyed they cut off David Cook. He sounded great on Light On and we got to hear the whole performance. Loved the little smile as he heard the crowd singing along. Very cute.

I kind of liked the flower dress. Talk about going green. Also thought Miley Cyrus looked really nice although precocious 16 year olds are not my favorite people in general. She did look great and it was a nice way to celebrate her 16th birthday. Didn’t they just do that in Disney World?? Taylor Swift looked lovely. She does sound better on the radio though, but I am sure it was a pretty “nervous-making” experience. She and her ex Jonas brother didn’t appear to run into each other.

Jimmy Kimmel, who is usually funny, wasn’t funny at all on this show, in my opinion. His comments about Archie were a little tacky. In fact most of his jokes seemed to fall flat. I hated the reference to Elvis Presley and where he died. Also, is it just me or does Kanye West need to get a bit of an ego check? Annie Lennox was a highlight and I also loved Alicia Keyes. Coldplay, not so much, and I usually really like them but they were all over and I couldn’t recognize any melody in the song they performed. I liked the Sarah McLaughlin/Pink duet. A strange combination to be sure, but somehow it seemed to work.

Congratulations to Carrie Underwood, not sure why her award was given at another time. It seemed a few others could have been cut out of the television show rather than hers. Congratulations to Jordan Sparks, but not too crazy about the bright yellow dress. She has had a great year in terms of Top 40 stations though. Jive records has done okay by her. Congratulations to Daughtry for beating out some pretty stiff competition. I am also glad that Chris Brown won and was impressed with his acceptance speech which was humble and gracious.

Thank you to the person who posted all of the Getty Images. Page 13 or 13 was, of course, my favorite page with all of those good pictures of David singing on the red carpet. I hope both Davids get to perform next year and both are nominated for major awards. A lot more David…a little less NKOTB would be my suggestion and maybe they could get Queen Latifah to be the host next year.

  5. 205 cookcricket Nov 24th, 2008 at 11:17 pm

Alicia Keys, blew me away with Queen Latifah and Kathleen Battles. Not only was it inspiring, but they were having such a great time! Awesome. Sarah McLachlan and Pink, so beautiful! Annie Lennox was very nice too! Thanks again for posting these mj.

You know, I’ve discovered a lot of great music on your blog. I have to say I found you when searching for more on DC during the finals and after AI, but you go above and beyond in introducing me to knew and different things. Thanks! :)

  6. 206 ShariG Nov 25th, 2008 at 12:05 am

Just wanted to say I agree with cookcricket. Thank you MJ. We always know where to come to get news of David Cook and more.

Shari, I so totally agree with you on Jimmy Kimmel. I liked him when he used to do the comedy routine on the Fox NFL Football pregame show (yes, I’m an extreme NFL football fanatic - maybe more than a fan of Idol), but I thought his jokes were lame and tasteless. Give me Billy Crystal anyday.

I hope both Davids get to perform next year and both are nominated for major awards. A lot more David…a little less NKOTB would be my suggestion and maybe they could get Queen Latifah to be the host next year.

    Amen to that.

  8. 208 Scott Nov 25th, 2008 at 9:45 am

Sorry this is a little late. I haven’t posted here yet, but I’ve lurked off and on since May. I usually come to MJs for the most recent information concerning AI, music trends and charts, and other TV related items. But I had an experience with fellow fans at the AMAs that just blew me away, and wanted to share.

The day - and what I witnessed - really drove home the reality of how big David Cook is in “Hollywood.” He was literally groomed on Sunday to be next year’s Breakout Artist at the show. As far as the “industry” is concerned, he’s already more than a breakout artist. He’s an established, hot artist period, and is held in very high esteem. I was one of the fortunate Cook fans who were treated to a full day at the AMAs, from the free concert to the red carpet arrivals to the 3 hour show.

The AMAs showed David a lot of love. A LOT of love. They showed David’s fans a lot of love. We in turn showed David a lot of love and several times today brought a smile to his face. David’s vocals on LO, sung & recorded twice in a row (for technical reasons) were flawless, twice in a row! To me his vocals were jaw dropping on Sunday. They began with Declaration which was also delivered flawlessly live by the entire band.

It struck me how serendiptious this all was. A small group, maybe 150 to 180 David Cook fans, treated to a private concert, to which we were accepted within hours of emailing our request, and once there, treated extremely well. All was so well organized. The day was divided into three components: David and his band’s performace between 2pm and 3pm. Then we’re moved to the bleachers 100 feet away for two hours of red carpet arrivals (of course David walked it even though he had arrived hours earlier-it’s all about the publicity and the interviews). And then, to our surprise and delight, EVERY David Cook fan who attended the concert was given a free ticket and brought inside to see the show! The show was amazing.

This was a unique and unusual event. David and his boys were the sole performers. It was HIS stage, with his name behind it in huge letters, in the style of his album cover. Just Cook fans. Standing all up by the stage. Intimate and amazing. it was pretaped and inserted into the live red carpet show. David and the boys were so relaxed. David was utterly charming, very funny, very chatty, and very much in control. Emitting enough charisma to ignite nuclear fusion. He toyed around with us, and had to kill time while the TV folks set up the shots and got the taping ready. So he was basically shooting the breeze with us. You’ve probably seen the videos (and fan pictures on the boards) so you know great they all looked in their ties. I call it “dress-rock.”

On the red carpet David got the loudest cheers, but it helped that half the bleachers were the 150 to180 of his fans who went to the performance! At one point when he was on line, after the pictures were taken, we started chanting Da-vid, Da-vid… etc. and it made him laugh. He did a fist up in the air thing, and then put his finger on his face - you know, the dimple routine thing. We showed him love! We did it during the concert too. I yelled out VH1, NUMBER ONE! and he looked over and smiled and then said, “hey, that was you guys!”
Bottom line: the AMAs literally packed the bleachers with Cook fans. Because of that he clearly got the loudest cheers going by. From my perspective, more than the Jonas Bros. Hollywood has completely embraced this man.

The music industry and the AMA clearly laid the groundwork of inviting him into the fold, into the big leagues. It was like they were foaming the runway for him to land in awardville next year. It was an honor for him to be the sole Red Carpet perfomer. It was a showcase for a breakthrough artist who is so new he hasn’t yet been nominated. I felt like it was an honor for us fans. It was a great day to be a David Cook fan here in LA. It bodes well that Daughtry won tonight. And I loved seeing David talking to Daughtry on the red carpet. He and Archie seemed really happy to see each other too.

    Awesome recap, Scott!

I thought I’d share some pictures and links to videos. The videos shot by John (John_socal at DCO and d-c.org) are of the entire 25 minutes that David and the band were on stage, including all banter and songs.

Scott, thanks for sharing your experience with us. What a truly memorable day it must have been for you. I’m also sure you guys helped make David’s first AMAs very special and one he won’t soon forget. He certainly deserves all the love and support we can give him. You did the fanbase proud! :)

  12. 212 weareallinnocent Nov 25th, 2008 at 10:19 am

Yes, awesome Scott! Thanks so much for including us. You really made me feel like I could be there. Proud teary eyes for me!

ETA: VIDEOS!!! Thank YOU, Thank YOU, Thank YOU!!!

  13. 213 Scott Nov 25th, 2008 at 10:21 am

I’m having trouble adding the images… my computer’s misbehaving. Clearing out some stuff and will try again. I wanted to put 6 of the best pictures right on that post. The boys were beautiful. Great eye candy… modern-day Beatles look.

  14. 214 elisad Nov 25th, 2008 at 10:23 am

    Aww, Scott, love ya.

  15. 215 Scott Nov 25th, 2008 at 10:25 am

That link to clip #1 took me to a different location.. here’s the correct link:

  16. 216 Scott Nov 25th, 2008 at 10:29 am

OK, so I embed the pictures, they show up when I save it, and then they disappear when I refresh. The code remains when I open the post to edit. Not sure what I’m doing wrong.

MJ, or any other Cook fans I know from DCO or d-c.org, please feel free to grab any of the pictures from my flickr pages and add them. I liked the ones of Neal and David side by side, arms in mirror image positions… the one of Andy, Joey & Kyle together, the stage with the huge David Cook sign and the one where David is leaning over, really close up, talking to the fans, and the verticle one of David smiling and looking to his right.

  17. 217 FolkFan Nov 25th, 2008 at 10:30 am

Those are some wonderful pictures, Scott. They looked so sharp, but also so happy….

  18. 218 hardkandy Nov 25th, 2008 at 10:35 am

MJ - sorry if I’m a little late on requesting but can you please upload the video of Taylor’s winning moment? I’ve only been able to find a video if it someone recording from the tv so the quality is not so great. But it’s cool if you can’t do it. Thanks anyway! :)

  19. 219 Scott Nov 25th, 2008 at 11:08 am

I just have to add one more thing, especially to some folk who love to passive aggressively predict the end is near for Cook. That tune is getting pretty old and rather laughable at this point.

Just from my experience all day at the AMA’s - David’s performance, the red carpet, and then all of us treated to the show inside - David was treated like royalty on Sunday, and so were his fans. David is A-list. Absolute A-List in Hollywood. I was there, and I witnessed it personally, as did DCO/d-c.org friends John_Socal, Zoo (Jeannine), dizzyclover, ItsSoReal and 150 other fans on various boards. Not to mention that Simon Fuller manages David personally. And that his album is off to a FANTASTIC start on its first week. Personally, I can completely ignore the naysayers. David is huge, and it’s well beyond our bubble. He’s past the point of no return. Even the biggest starts can fall, and many do down the road. But David Cook has launched and he’s pretty much golden for the next few years. Not everyone is asked to serenade Hillary Clinton.

  20. 220 weareallinnocent Nov 25th, 2008 at 11:17 am

“Not everyone is asked to serenade Hillary Clinton.”

A most excellent point, Scott! Thanks for the pep talk. It surely helps the worriers (and warriors) among us, ahem. :wub_tb:

  21. 221 FolkFan Nov 25th, 2008 at 11:32 am

    Preach it, Scott. Woo-hoo!

  22. 222 LK08 Nov 25th, 2008 at 11:54 am

Suzanne from page 4- I think the Kimmel bit about Klein putting DA to bed was a lame attempt at making fun of his young look again. Not sure, but it WAS lame.

  23. 223 Scott Nov 25th, 2008 at 1:10 pm

I must add that I love Archie and really dislike any kind of disrespect toward him. He seems like a really good natured young man with a thicker skin than you might imagine. That’s speaks to his humility. He probably takes it all in his stride, but I still think he deserves respect. When he’s got a half dozen hits out there and his record is platinum, then it’s time for some ribbing. Right now I view it as kind of mean. I may sing the praises of Mr. Cook, but I will NEVER take anything away from Archie. He is a powerhouse of talent who will succeed in a very different genre (which is the most popular genre).
Both Davids are in this for the long haul. In addition to the Davids, there are 3 more winning entities to emerge from AI7:
    Sony/BMG (RCA & Jive)
    19 Entertainment
    The fans

  24. 224 LK08 Nov 25th, 2008 at 4:27 pm

Well said Scott. The fans are the big winners with these two guys.

  25. 225 Scott Nov 25th, 2008 at 10:30 pm

John has posted his HQ version of his videos of the David Cook Band’s AMA performance, and the’re amazing!
