David Hernandez and Diana DeGarmo sing “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” on the Saturday CBS Early Show, with American Idol’s Michael Orland on piano, after the jump.

This seems like a nice gig for the 4 of them. Congrats.

They sounded and looked great! I wish Idol/Fox would do a Christmas special and bring back lots of the popular idols. I would watch it.

Wasn’t Constantine going to be part of this too?
They sounded great. Hernandez has great vocals.

Yes, so was Kim Caldwell. Some of the lazier news stories still post the old cast members. This has been in the works for several months now, and Idols who were supposed to participate came and went…

They sounded great together! I’d go see this if they were coming anywhere near me.

Thanks, MJ. If there’s one thing Michael Orland knows, it’s how to do something right. I was skeptical about the Idol tour idea, but at least he brought together 4 people that can actually sing. I do have to say, Diana and David look wonderful as well.

Thanks MJ. I remember reading about Kim Caldwell, but must have missed the Constantine part.

I always thought David H had a really good voice and this shows it. They do sound great together. Glad to see David and Chikeze get a chance to be seen and heard and make a few bucks.

    DH gave me goosebumps.

Chikezie was on Hollywood 411. He talked about the AI judges, the AI tour, and the upcoming Christmas Tour. He then sang “O Holy Night.” He really should have dressed up a little more for this TV appearance. Check out the video…

    Interview and Performance

Here’s a very brief VLOG from Chickezie.

Sniff. David Hernandez was so sent home too soon last year.

  12. 12 Niall Nov 30th, 2008 at 12:47 am

I can’t get over how grown up Diana is now!! She sounds amazing. David H did a good job too.

  13. 13 Tony Nov 30th, 2008 at 1:36 am

    “Make the Yule-tide gay”

    lolz

But seriously, I always thought David was really good and was definitely sent home too early.

ok good i’m not the only one who laughed a little with that line.

And yes they both sounded GREAT!!!! I would love to go see this show but the closest it get is TEXAS.

David and Diana sound fantastic together (and look great). I could see them doing very well on Broadway or as a cabaret act. Anyway David H was my second favorite of S7 and I’m happy to hear him again. Usually these idol “also rans” show seem terrible but this one looks good.

I agree about David and Diana - great voices. Also loved Chikezie. I am not a big Kim Locke fan - not sure why.

If Hernandez would have sang some in falsetto like that on the show, he would have been around a lot longer.

  18. 18 t2 Nov 30th, 2008 at 11:47 am

Hernandez drew the short straw on the Beatles songs (Saw Her Standing There — a pure pop song while David’s real strength was in R&B/soul/motown/ballads/anything BUT pop. David also had zero backstory so that didn’t help. And then, of course, there was the whole stripper thing…

Hernandez was my second favorite too — I hope he gets music that suits him, because he shines in that gendre.

They sound great! I’m glad they are getting people together for this who are all excellent vocalists. I so wish they were coming closer to where I live…I would love to see them! I loved all four of them when they were on their seasons of Idol, and it’s nice to see that they are keeping themselves in the public eye. I can’t wait for Diana to get a country album out. I always thought that would be the best fit for her voice. Even Simon said the genre suited her back on Country Week of Season 3.

David and Diana sound fantastic together (and look great). I could see them doing very well on Broadway or as a cabaret act.

Diana’s done Broadway and did very well with it. I think she’s pretty settled with writing and recording in Nashville right now.

Those two sound really nice together. I still think David Hernandez left much too early, torpedoed by the gay stripper scandal. He was really very good. I’m glad he’s getting the chance to do this show, even if he wasn’t Top Ten. I guess this shows that once a season of Idol is over, everybody is pretty much equaled out. So two 2s can do a tour with a 10 and a 12. If they added Amy Adams and George Huff, I would really be happy!

I always loved David H.’s voice and am thrilled he’s getting some exposure. I also love Diana DeGarmo. That girl can sang!!! I hope to hear more from both of them in the future.

  22. 22 Suzanne Nov 30th, 2008 at 3:59 pm

Thanks for putting that up, MJ. They did well. I hope their tour gets good audiences. Chikezie is singing mostly R&B, which I think he likes but it’s too bad. there’s a lot of people who do R&B, and he’s got more in his arsenal than that.

I am not a big Kim Locke fan - not sure why.

She’s not a nice person. (She called Jason Castro as dumb as a rock (or as dumb as dirt–can’t remember exactly but you get the idea) in the press. That wasn’t a private comment; she said it to a reporter while that person was interviewing her for a publication.) Perhaps that’s why.

I think they sounded great together!
I really do enjoy all 4 of them, and if the chance came around, I’d go watch this show.
Despite what shes said since her time on the show, Kimberly Locke was one of my fave contestants. Her ” I can’t make you love me” still gives me goosebumps.
I wish them a lot of luck with this tour!

  24. 24 IdolFanatic Nov 30th, 2008 at 4:40 pm

Yeah I am a fan of Kim Locke’s voice and even have her first CD. However, I have not been very impressed with the comments she has made about some of the Season 7 contestants. It seems like a lot of past Idol alum came out with some sour grapes and negative feelings towards the Season 7 group. Chris Sligh wrote a weekly column for EW about the show and came off at times sounding borderline arrogant. Constantine well, he’s just a jerk, plain and simple. Blake Lewis…pretty much dissed the whole Top 10.
Ayla Brown sounded downright bitter in her writings about the season. It’s a shame that so many of them had such feelings of negativity regarding Season 7. Perhaps because it was being touted as the Most Talented Season ever. The thing is though, they say that every year, and this is the first year I had heard so many sour grapes type of comments from past Idols. Everyone’s certainly entitled to their opinions and I don’t expect them all the like everything they see and hear, but there are ways to go about it without coming off as bitter also rans. It just made them look bad. Carmen Rasmusen was very classy in stating her opinions. She used constructive critcism but she never bashed anyone. Phil Stacey was also very classy in his blogs for USA Today.

I’ve always liked Kimberly, but if she said that about Jason, she goes down down down in my estimation. I think Jason’s a lot smarter than people realize, but even if he wasn’t, not a smart thing for Kim to say.

David Hernandez - just never saw the appeal.

  26. 26 IdolFanatic Nov 30th, 2008 at 7:40 pm

Jason’s incredibly smart, talented, and very sweet too. People underestimate him just because he is sometimes a little shy. He was terrific on the tour.

I liked Hernandez, and he sounds good here, with Diana D. Unfortunately, David’s not a standout personality and his voice, while nice, isn’t “different”. Chickeze was wonderful on the show and his “She’s a Woman” was one of my favorite performances of the season. I hope we hear more than just stright up R&B from him… again, in that genre, he is lost in a crowd. Just the same, it’s hard to create a post Idol career, especially with a lower tier exit… so I wish them all well.

Kimberley Locke was the first idol contestant I actually voted for. I knew it was a lost cause (she was up against the Clay/Ruben machine) but I always loved her voice. Still do.

Idolfanatic, I hear what you’re saying about some of the comments made by Kim and other former contestants. You can hear some bitterness and snark in much of the comments, but I have to (respectfully) disagree with some of your comments regarding Sligh. I read his EW blogs on the show and found them accurate and insightful… yes, with snark. But that is part of his personality. I didn’t personally feel the bitterness at the same level that you did. But, that’s just my opinion.

Hernandez was “outed” when the Idol producers decided to give him a public “vote of confidence” and therefore made news out of an innocuous TMZ story that was actually quite old having been published on VFTW long before and in general circulation on the Internet boards and blogs (with pictures) for weeks. The fact is that the 19E people didn’t want a gay/bi male stripper touring…for whatever reason…nor, clearly, did they want Amanda touring. From the small number of performances that I heard from him, Hernandez was my favorite male vocalist last year. Having said that, stylistically, I feel he still goes overboard on the melisma.
