Anoop Desai posted a demo on his MySpace of Keri Hilson’s “Make Love”.
When I interviewed him back in August, he mentioned he’d be uploading music to My Space. He’s not wasting time, which is totally smart.
Cruising around his page, I noticed Anoop has a couple of my photos posted in his photo gallery. Yay Anoop!
Check it out. Anoop’s tenor sounds pretty smooth wrapped around this Hilson cover:

He did ask fans to tweet producers. I follow him on Twitter and was shocked. It was something about how “they,” meaning he and his fans, would get something started together by tweeting producers and songwriters. He added something about not being overzealous. Like was said above, it’s bush league and something a person does if they don’t have any other options.
And just because some of the people were nice enough to tweet fans back doesn’t mean it helped.
This, I totally agree with. It’s not his single, it’s a demo. And I think it successfully shows that his voice and singing style is very suited to the genre that he wants to pursue—pop R&B.And Keri Hilson is a very popular pop R&B singer (responsible for Knock You Down)….so those who are not into pop/hiphop R&B, probably won’t get this…..I don’t get some of the other genres either so….
Although personally, from his previous song covers…I’d prefer him to concentrate more on soul R&B (Donny Hathaway’s For all we Know, his take on Mario’s Let me Love You,Chrisette Michele’s What You Do and such) but definitely Anoop is R&B.
He is based in LA.I don’t know if he already has management but I think he’s hinted he is in process of doing so.Plus I think he’s been making demos to submit to recording companies.
Wouldn’t Anoop be in a better position than –say, US mere AI viewers– to actually know how hard it would be to ask for an audience with really famous singers and songwriters?Maybe, we are the naive ones.I don’t think that just because one was once a part of a huge TV show….it means your name by itself carries much weight around—-the big thing it American Idol not the contestants themselves. If that weren’t the case…wouldn’t it follow that previous non-AI winners would have been able to do just that (collaborate immediately with famous songwriters and singers)?
I think Anoop is ambitious but he is new to the business so he’s LEARNING and he’s TRYING.I hope he finds a management team that complements his drive and ambition because he certainly is not lacking in talent.
Regarding the NC concert….I think even if it was in NC, it was admirable how he and his friends (who were almost all non-professional musicians…more aspiring musicians) were able to put up a full 14-song concert in a big-enough arena in such a short time and in a presumably limited budget…..impressive enough for me.
That being said, thank you MJ for putting this up!And good luck Anoop!
Oh and yes….Anoop deserves a recording contract in the genre that he wants—R&B.
Anoop tweeted saying, “Here are some of the people I would love to work with. Let’s see if we can make this happen together. Don’t be overzealous tho”.
I really don’t see that as being unprofessional. It’s very similar to other artists/celebs asking their followers to trend or RT their latest project, single, etc.
AI gives your name some exposure but if you aren’t Kris or Adam, idols without a record deal have to work their way back to the top. I think networking through all media outlets is a good plan.
Just had a chance to listen to “Make Love”, and I’m liking it a lot. He has a very smooth, good R&B, neo-soul voice. Sometimes, I think Noop sings the songs too slow–or slower than we are accustomed on the cover songs. That kind of bothers me, but that’s his interpretation, so it’s okay. He sounds as good as any of the singers out there to me. I’m not a huge Keri fan, but she is good.
My friend who accompanied me to the Idols concert in St. Louis in August said that Anoop was her favorite of the ten. Her favorite types of music are Blues, Soul, R&B. She said he was very good.
We would buy his music!!!!
this kind of music ruled the airwaves in the early 90s. smooth & sultry. all that’s missing in his song is the saxaphone, lol. poor anoop was born a decade (or two) too late. hope anoop & ppl like him can bring about a revival of this perfect-for-lovemaking music.
Anoop’s voice is beautiful on this. The song is annoying but you can’t argue about the voice.
Funny how you say this when this song comes from a 2008 hit album. But I do think that the more soulful R&B songs is making a comeback….
Keri Hilson is a prolific songwriter and talented singer but if you listen to her version of the song, her vocals were like on the background (maybe on purpose) and overshadowed by the loud bass backbeats which almost drowns out Keri’s voice unlike Anoop’s version which is more about the vocals than the backbeats…..so that…
I think Keri’s version is very sultry and steamy…..Anoop’s version is sexy but very tender….totally Anoop’s take is different.
@Niall
Just cause he and the others were on the show, doesn’t mean they can go knocking on keri hilson’s doors. They don’t have access to those people. They have access to the people who have small studio productions. That is why he is doing cover songs for the time being. He is trying to show the genre he’s best at…which wasn’t reflected very well on the show.
he will be putting out original music soon, but I think he’s waiting to see if he can land a deal. In the mean time, he’s doing a great job of keeping his name out there. His fans are trying to help him by tweeting, or sending out his new videos to the other artists and/or record companies. Hey, anything helps right?
Anoop is not an idiot. He’s smart and yes, he is still learning and trying to make it in the music biz. He’s not like kris, danny, adam and allison where they have everything they need. its all now up to anoop. cut the boy some slack!
Let’s be sure to know when he gets management. That will solve problems and make connections with other artists and recording companies. But hey, there’s nothing wrong with Anoop’s fans to help out a little bit. I hope he will get the break he needs to let the world hear his wonderful voice!
