Billboard Update 02/03/07

View this week’s Idol Billboard chart here.

  • Idol related CD’s occupy the #1 and #2 spots on the Billboard 200 this week.
  • Chris Daughtry’s “DAUGHTRY” is the #1 album this week on the Billboard 200.  It’s also #1 on the Rock Chart and the Billboard Comprehensive Albums chart.  According to Billboard, “DAUGHTRY”, “debuted at No. 2 in November and has not been lower than No. 11 since. Sales increased 30% over last week, likely due to last week’s premiere of the new season of Idol and the continued strong performance of the single “It’s Not Over” on the top 40 and Hot AC charts.”
  • “Dreamgirls”, featuring Jennifer Hudson, drops to the #2 spot on the Billboard 200.
  • However, according to Billboard, it was another “dire” week in music retail, ” …the third in a row that the No. 1 Billboard 200 album has shifted less than 100,000 copies. The last time this happened was in May and June of 1991, shortly after Billboard began using SoundScan sales data on the chart.”
  • Kellie Pickler’s appearance as guest host on The View last week gave her numbers a nice bounce.  “Small Town Girl” jumped from #83 to #51 on the Billboard 200, and #13 to #8 on the Country Album Chart.
  • Kimberly Locke has a new single, ”Change”.  You can check it out on her MySpace.  “Change” debuts at #25 on the Adult Contemporary Chart.
  • Clay Aiken’s single “A Thousand Days” debuts at #29 on the Adult Contemporary Chart.
  • Bucky Covington’s single, “A Different World” moves 10 spots on the Country Singles Chart, from #57 to #47.

Can someone explain how the distribution issue and lack of single propelled Daughtry to no.1 over Taylor? The number of actual CDs for Taylor is larger, yet Daughtry is being listed as no.1 which doesn’t add up.

I agree, Dov. It doesn’t. And I don’t think it’s very fair to Taylor that his album has been out for a while and STILL no single. Man, they must REALLY want him to fail and want Chris to succeed. It’s kind of sad actually.

They’re both talented in their own way, but to pimp a non-winner over a winner is kind of a mockery to the competition. Season two Ruben was in the bottom two, but Clay never was and it is pretty much agreed upon that Clay was the true winner had there not been the telephone voting problems, but Ruben still got the publicity. Clay eventually proved himself, but still. Season five we have Chris in the bottom two twice, but Taylor never. From day one Taylor had the pull of the public, but Chris had the pull of the producers. Both are great at what they do, but the winner should be given all the resources to succeed before all the other contestants else it makes the competition of no use. All of them should be able to succeed, but the winner should be the one that, well, wins! But what is the deal with the distribution issue and the lack of a single? I don’t know the facts on it and have heard it is a biggie considering the actual number of CDs produced was higher for Taylor than Chris, but Chris is getting more of the publicity. Is it just that it’s easier to publicize a rock star over a jazz/r&b/soul singer, or is it because Taylor thumbs his nose at AI producers (which they deserve), or is it something else, or is it all of the above?

MJ, I think you forgot to run Taylor’s numbers… :-)

When it’s your money on the line, then you can make the decisions. Besides, there is plenty of time for Taylor to release singles. You are merely looking at a snapshot in time each week, and both of them deserve to succeed and will on their own time.

So don’t fret over sour grapes because the grapes ARE NOT EVEN SOUR AT THIS TIME.

Taylor is thrilled over Chris’ success as he will be with kat, E, or any of the Idols. Why shouldn’t we all be??? Chris is a good guy and a great talent. I am 100% pulling for Taylor and in time he will get
    there.

Chris finally won me over with the National Anthem last week. One of the best renditions I’ve heard.

Thanks MJ for keeping us updated.

Again Why no Carrie Chart information? What is the problem? Carrie is an Idol as well.

I don’t mention an Idol unless something notable has happened in their chart movements–or they have something new on the chart.

Check out my current chart under “Current Charts”, all of the Idols who are on this week’s Billboard charts are listed there.
