Billboard Update 08/04/07

Here it is–this week’s Billboard Update

  • It’s official. Bucky Covington takes the lead as 2007’s best-selling debut country artist. Yay Bucky…
  • She’s charting at #6 and #8 on the Hot Christian Adult Contemporary and Hot Christian Songs charts (Only the World). And charting at #3 on the Hot Singles Sales Chart.  That’s Mandisa, whose debut album “True Beauty” will be released on Tuesday.  Check out her my space to hear some samples and buy her singles…
  • “Now 25″, the latest Top 40 compilation album, debuts at #1 on the Billboard 200.  Carrie Underwood (Before He Cheats), Daughtry (Home),  Kelly Clarkson (Never Again) and Elliott Yamin (Wait For You) all have cuts on the album.  It’s an Idol Bonanza! Yee haw…
  • Bucky Covington and Kelly Pickler both move up the charts this week.  The other Idols either stayed about the same, or fell down the charts a bit. Not counting compilations, there are no Idol albums in the Billboard 200 Top 10 this week…
  • Chris Daughtry (Home) and Fantasia (When I See U) hold on to #1 positions on the Hot Adult Top 40 and Hot R&B Singles/Airplay charts, respectively.
  • Taylor Hicks (Heaven Knows) climbs from #23 to #22, its highest chart position so far.

Great news for the Buckster. (My pet name for him is Busky after I’ve had a few glasses of wine.) Great to see so many former idol contestants doing well on the charts. I wonder who we’ll see from season 6? Should Bucky be worrried about losing his country crown to Phil? Should Chris be worried about losing his rock crown to Gina? Who knows? Somebody needs to get signed first! Come on Jordin spill!

    Allright now Taylor!

And congrats to the Buckster. Love the dude. So great that Nashville’s embracing him. His video (and Kellie’s) are absolutely refreshing in their sweet simplicity.

Should Bucky be worried? No. There’s room for both him and Phil :) Don’t think D has anything to worry ’bout…but hopefully Gina will put forth some kicka$$ rock. Pop music could use a good rocker chick again. :cool1_tb:

Oh lg - I was just goofing off with those dumb questions. I was trying to get someone to respond… I talked to myself a lot in here this morning!

Kirsten, under the Billboard Charts listings there is a note giving “Total Units sold…..”. Could you define “unit” — Albums only I assume? Both physical and digital? TY.

    Another yee-haw for the Buckster.

I have an observation, and a question.

    1) Bucky’s success is a great reason why it’s important to make top ten and the tour. He probably would not have been signed if he didn’t have the tour experience. Remember, he was very close to being eliminated on top 11 week (he was in the bottom two along with Kevin).

To me, top 11 week is far more important than the finale. It’s not important to win, especially when the fourth place finisher has so-man times more sales than the winner. But it is important to make it into the public’s (and media’s) eyes during the tour.

Matt and Mikalah (both 11th place finishers) made it as spokespersons because of their personalities. And I wouldn’t be surprised to see Kevin make it as a spokesperson. But they have the personality as spokespersons, and they are not the best singers.

Sadly, this does not bode well for Stephanie who I thought was eliminated way too early. She’s a great talent, but I just don’t see doors opening for her.

    2) Any rumors on if Bucky and/or Kellie would be nominated for the Horizan Award (the CMA Award for the best new country artist)? Carrie won that award last year. I thought Kellie would be nominated for sure, but if Bucky is garnering more sales than her….

Yes. Units are albums and they are both physical and digital. BB combines them for their charts (though there are seperate digital charts for some categories). Digital album sales are still quite low compared to physical sales. Most people tend to buy the physical CD or a few digital tracks. The big exceptions are probably digital albums with exclusive iTunes bonus tracks.

Here is an article as the reference for the numbers:

    Oh well, it worked :)

He probably would not have been signed if he didn’t have the tour experience.

Good point. Also, it didn’t hurt Bucky at all that Mark Miller of Sawyer Brown took a shine to Bucky and helped him get his foot in the door. Bucky’s got it goin’ on and I’m so proud of his success.

I think it’s quite possible that either he or Kellie will be nominated for the Horizon award, but it’s def. looking better for for Bucky at this point :)

It is great news for Idol to see such success. I am thinking back to Seasons 1 & 2 when many people in the music industry took this show as a fad or joke. It has proven to be a mighty torch with more and more singers wanting to appear on the show after seeing increased record sales for TV appearance!

I wish Taylor would catch fire quickly. I still believe in him and his music! What a great representative he is for the show.

Thank you MJ for being on top of things! You are very much appreciated!
