Yamin’s album, released in March on Sony/ATV’s boutique Hickory Records label, has shipped 360,000 copies, and going gold (500,000 copies) is all but assured.
according to Foxes on Idols’ Donna Reynolds. Elliott has actually sold less than 251,000 as of this week. Looks like this is just one more instance of labels inflating their shipments (as in Kat McPhee “going gold”) with less than a stellar sales record. Up until the past year, I was naive enough to believe that if an artist was certified as gold or platinum that they had sold 500,000 or 1,000,000 units. Apparently ignorance is bliss and rose colored-glasses are highly desirable eye apparel since I was much happier with the music world before I found all this out.
The post article says Elliott has Shipped 360,000 and gold is almost assured. I think that’s a true staement. It didn’t say he SOLD 360,000.. Last sales had him at 250,913 so of course they had to ship more to the stores. And going Gold is shipping 500k which is good enough for me. It makes no matter if he sold 500k cause if the stores are stocking them then it is just a matter of time before he’s gold. GO ELLIOTT.
I think it’s true too ealbino. I don’t care if it’s based on shipped or sold. It matters not to me and it certainly doesn’t bother me. I’ll be one happy camper if Elliott can hit that 500K!
What Donna Reynolds wrote is E sold almost 251K as of this week. His actual Soundscan number was 250,930 (or something like that.) He was
very close to 251K. No one is inflating his numbers.Since his original shipment was 240K, shipping another 120K makes sense. The Post article states they shipped 360K total. That’s all the info we have.
I too have gotten an education is how platinum isn’t really platinum, etc. but as of right now, no one has inflated Elliott’s sales. Please do not compare him to Kat going “gold” (which I don’t think she actually has). His label is “expecting him to go gold.” They’re not saying he has. Since Elliott has a hit single, I think he’ll continue to sell CDs.
I agree JPFan and Lu

I’ve read that as long as an album sells about 10K a week, retailers keep restocking. If sales go lower, no new orders go in for while. So the challenge for all of them is not to fall too far below 10K weekly. If Kat doesn’t start selling at this level, I doubt her album will be certified “gold.”
Well, I have heard Elliott’s single on my local top 40 station every day this week, so he’s doing well in Florida at least. :)
I think he’ll continue to sell well. It’s a good album, and the single seems to be gaining steam. I think the future looks great for him!
Kat’s initial shipment was 350,000. If Elliott is expected to go gold after shipping 360k I don’t see how it is unreasonable that Katharine will go gold too.
Since she has sold nearly 340k- I’m sure she has had more ship out as well.
Darn!!! I can’t get into chat again tonight!
I Think the difference is that Elliott is being played on the radio and is top 20 on the biggest station in NY..Z100. I believe that alone could get him sales into gold. I don’t think Kat has much radio play. We could check Kirsten’s stats easily.
That’s possible ealbino. Though a radio hit does not always guarentee solid sales.
Katharine’s first single “Over It” went top 21 and was played in semi-heavy rotation by Z100. The song has over 400,000 downloads, but it did not do much for album sales.
Album sales are just so unpredictable anymore.
How do you think Kat’s new single is doing, XO?
I think Elliott’s record company assuming E will go gold is hope and guesswork. They don’t really know. However, considering his album is still in the Top 50 going into Week 12 of sales, he has a decent shot. The problem for Kat is she’s fallen off the Billboard 200. Her single needs to get the album sales moving again.
Lu:
Kat’s new single is #70 on top 40 today. It is slowly gaining steam. She hasn’t gotten any of the big stations yet, and I am not convinced that RCA is going to do much to support the song.
She is shooting her video this week so it should be out by the end of the month.
RCA waited way too long to release the new single. Way too long.
Also, I hope I don’t come across sounding like I don’t want Elliott to succeed. I really hope only the best things for him. I definitely liked him last season. I just don’t trust record companies much. LOL
No, XO, I didn’t think that you sounded that way at all regarding Elliott.
Maybe Kat’s video will help her out. You would think her label would get behind her since it’s in their best interest for her to succeed.
Angelia I don’t know what week’s Foxes On Idol you were reading but the direct quote from the last one posted there is “Elliott Yamin has sold nearly 251,000 copies to date.”
Just adding up the the sales each week shows that a total of over 250,000 have been sold. Close to 251,000.
250,913. Not 251,000 but darn close.
