Billboard Update: Issue 10/06/07 - And Idol Record News

This week’s Idol Billboard update! YAY!

  • All the Idols’ CD’s are pushed down the Billboard 200 to make way for a slew of new entries. There is only one Idol album in the Top 50–Daughtry, at #32. The next to chart is Carrie Underwood’s “Some Hearts” at #61. Mandisa’s “True Beauty”, Bucky Covington’s “Bucky Covington” and Fantasia’s “Fantasia” all fell off the Billboard 200 this week.
  • Reba McEntire’s “Reba Duets” album, featuring Kelly Clarkson singing “Because of You” debuted at #1 this week. The single, “Because of You” has spent 13 weeks on the Hot 100 and is currently at #51. It sits at #14 on the Hot Country Songs chart.
  • Carrie Underwood’s single “So Small” breaks the Hot Country Songs Top 10 at #10.
  • Wow! Check it out! Elliott Yamin’s single “Wait For You” is still hanging in the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 after 23 weeks on the chart.
  • Daughtry’s “Home” keeps the #1 spot on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart for the 8th straight week.

There’s Idol Record News After the Jump….so CLICK!

  • Bucky Covington was recently in Bowling Green, KY to shoot a music video for his latest video “It’s Good To Be Us.” It’s being taped at Balance MX Motocross in Oakland. The video should be completed in about a month.
  • Kellie Pickler will be back in the studio in January to record the follow-up to her debut CD. She and fellow country music newcomer Taylor Swift have written a song together. Kellie says it’s about an ex she dated for four years who knocked up another woman while she was dating him! Sounds like a country hit to me. Heh.
  • Chris Sligh is featured on Kevin Max’s upcoming album “The Blood” due to be released on December 26. The single will be a duet with Chris, “Run On For a Long Time” and will be released to radio this month.
  • Americanidol.com has posted a short release about Blake Lewis’s upcoming album “Audio Day Dream.” The list of producers working with Blake:

Sam Hollander & Sluggo (Gym Class Heroes, Boys Against Girls), JR Rotem (50 Cent, Rihanna, Britney Spears, Sean Kingston), Ryan Tedder (V. CENTRAL TO THE PROJECT), David Hodges (Evanescence), BT, Sean Hurley (Robin Thicke), and Mike Elizondo (Maroon 5, Eminem).

Carrie has NOT sold 1.6 million downloads of So Small (yet.) The number is more like 160,000 (just move the comma). I didn’t realize Pickler had fallen out of the BB200. She may not match Taylor’s sales after all. I bet her second album is pretty decent as well.

I love seeing official info on Blake’s album. I’m looking forward to that. Of course I’ve been happy about Chris’ success but also am impressed by Elliot’s, Bucky’s, and Kellie’s. I don’t know who Kevin Max is but good for Chris in having a single with him.

I saw Kelly do the single with Reba on Oprah. I prefer Kelly’s version but anytime you can get double duty for a song it’s all good. I also admit to enjoying Justin Timberlake’s appearance on that show and even bought the song he did (What goes around). It’s very catchy.

Bean - I agree with you, That was the first performance by JT that I’ve enjoyed in a long time. He wrote a beautiful song.

ETA: Oops! I was referring to the one he wrote for Reba. The Only Promise That Remains, I think.

We got the official numbers for the Top 200 Albums. I’ve updated the sales thread, but thought I would post them again here (since the abbreviated numbers are here)

Can someone tell me what it means to be on a recurrent airplay chart?

  8. 8 bean99 Sep 30th, 2007 at 6:44 pm

Bobbi, I did think the song he did for Reba was good but I’m not a fan of her voice or country music.

According to that venerable source Wikipedia, the “recurrent” classification was devised to “allow the chart to remain as current as possible and to give proper representation to new and developing artists and tracks.”

Beginning in 1991, Billboard “has removed titles from the Hot 100 that have reached certain criteria regarding its current rank and number of weeks on the chart. Recurrent criteria have been modified several times and currently (as of 2007), a song is permanently moved to “recurrent status” if it has spent twenty weeks on the Hot 100 and fallen below position number fifty. Exceptions are made to re-releases and sudden resurgence in popularity of tracks that have taken a very long time to gain mainstream success. These rare cases are handled on a case-by-case basis and ultimately determined by Billboard’s chart managers and staff. The most notable exception to the recurrent entry policy applies to holiday-themed releases…”

I’m assuming the same basic criteria is applied to the various chart types that now have “recurrent” versions, i.e, country, R&B, etc. The number of charts now tracked and published by Billboard is, well, nuts.

That scraping sound you hear is Nevada grinding her teeth over my use and quoting of Wikipedia.

…Or maybe it’s my use of the word “nuts.”

bean99, Kevin Max is one of the members of dcTalk, probably the most influential Christian band of all-time. Chris Sligh sang one of their songs (”Wanna Be Loved”) in the Top 16 week.
