Some technical errors, but I overall enjoyed it. I could criticize it but eh - he mostly sounded good.

  2. 2 dusty May 30th, 2007 at 12:32 pm

I had this on the DVR so I could watch it at lunch. Sounded like Blake prerecorded a backup track to accompany his solo but the track got out of synch. You could see him have a longer intro than he intended and then have several places where the backup track was not in synch with him. I thought he did a good job on his solo part, though.

The part where Blake showed his equipment to R and K was good, too.

  3. 3 maracaibo May 30th, 2007 at 12:36 pm

    His voice sounded GREAT!
I have to say I really love Blake’s voice.

I just think the loop machine messed up for him towards the end, you could tell he was like WTF? LOL.

But overall I think he did awesome
I guess he just needs to tune up that machine HEH. He hasn’t used it in a while.

I agree with Kelly, Blake will have a HUGE career. Can’t wait for it to start, and I can’t wait for his record.

Thanks, MJ! Despite some technical glitches, that was pretty cool. I liked how he looped his own voice and harmonized with himself. Can’t wait to see it on tour.

  5. 5 MN Sue May 30th, 2007 at 1:38 pm

Live by the loop, die by the loop. Just ask Britney. Sweet guy, though. I liked the calm, humble interview. He moved up a few notches on my respectability belt.

  6. 6 Preston May 30th, 2007 at 1:42 pm

LOVED the self-harmonization part. That was just awesome.

  7. 7 Tony May 30th, 2007 at 1:45 pm

    That was terrible.

  8. 8 MN Sue May 30th, 2007 at 1:49 pm

Heh guys, wouldn’t it be great if Blake had a gizmo on his looper, echoing, thingy to correct his pitch problems?

  9. 9 carolina May 30th, 2007 at 1:58 pm

Well, that was either pretty damned cool or a hot mess.

    Whatever it was, go Blake!

(Maybe he needs to upgrade his equipment.)

  10. 10 GwendolynD May 30th, 2007 at 2:15 pm

It wasn’t so bad. He may need to save the more intricate stuff for longer performances, though.

  11. 11 LB2 May 30th, 2007 at 2:19 pm

I think the problem was when he looped the first time, it caught the audience’s cheers so he had to start all over. Making it a longer intro than it needed to be. It seemed to make him nervous. Then the looping machine started going too fast. Usually set up for songs that involve looping take a little longer than the 2-3 minutes they have on R&K.

I appreciate the idea enough (the execution can be improved), though, for me to genuinely like it.

  12. 12 RightSaidFred May 30th, 2007 at 2:30 pm

    I vote for hot mess.

That WAS terrible, technically and vocally. IF you’re going to try to resurrect the glory days of beatboxing, mix it up into an 80’s euro-techno-pop vibe AND SELL I think you got to do it better than that. Otherwise you’re going to be relegated go the basement discos in Amsterdam and Eastern Europe.

It’s easy to cross the line into the realm of shtick. This is the kind of thing that SNL parodies are born of. Be careful dude, because when the novelty wears off….

Blake would be one of the main reasons I would go to see the AI tour. This was not his best, but I liked the guitar.

  14. 14 bean99 May 30th, 2007 at 2:44 pm

I’m glad some of you explained that because I was wondering what happened. I actually like the song better without the additions but I’m sure it’s good when everything works right. I loved the interview part even if it was short. I still hope to go to the concert although it’s not coming to my city. Just want to add that he looked adorable.

  15. 15 jnd1221 May 30th, 2007 at 2:45 pm

    That was effing cool.

  16. 16 meme May 30th, 2007 at 3:04 pm

Blake what are you thinking? Take Randy’s advice and don’t be beatingboxing through life. I would love to hear him on just a plain accoustic piece instead of all that extra you include. The word Loopy has been name dropped in the comments today..from which I’m feeling after watching him on R&K.

  17. 17 Allison May 30th, 2007 at 3:13 pm

I’m curious to why he’s doing this song? Haven’t we heard it enough by it’s originators?

  18. 18 RollTide May 30th, 2007 at 3:16 pm

    I liked it. :)

I think the main problem was the time constraints of R & K. It will rock on tour, I am sure of it. :) Can’t wait to hear it live.

  19. 19 AlwaysElliott May 30th, 2007 at 3:32 pm

It wasn’t my favorite….of all songs, why this one? My favorite one of the season was “When I Get You Alone” - wish he’d take that one on the road. Anyway, I couldn’t figure out what was going on there, I actually thought the sound was out of sync because of a lag online or something. Poor Blake!!! Looking forward to seeing all his upcoming performances though!!!

  20. 20 Tarita May 30th, 2007 at 3:47 pm

    I liked it!

  21. 21 moody May 30th, 2007 at 3:52 pm

Count me among the disappointed. It kind of looked like a bad lip-synch. Between the reverberation and the beat being off, too many distractions to really appreciate the vocals. His interview went well though.

  22. 22 angelia May 30th, 2007 at 4:28 pm

are all these comments re the video or the actual appearance, i missed the appearance show on tv and am wondering how that went. so many of the vids are of poor quality. i still think blake is the most marketable of this year’s crop and will draw in more than his fair share of concert goers.

  23. 23 Lisa B May 30th, 2007 at 4:30 pm

Great guy but relies too much on technology.

His future is in producing and a successful one at that.

  24. 24 patmoran2006 May 30th, 2007 at 4:41 pm

Im a Blake fan of late.

But I have to say.. that was REALLY really wack.

  25. 25 maracaibo May 30th, 2007 at 4:47 pm

i still think blake is the most marketable of this year’s crop and will draw in more than his fair share of concert goers.

    I agree.
I think the loop pedals were just for this performance because he doesn’t have a band available yet.
I’ve watched his PRE AI performances and he doesn’t use the loop pedals all the time. He will switch it up on tour I am sure.

I think he just needs to use it in a more subtle way, but I think he was great.

I also think he is too good of a performer to just stick behind the scenes. He was meant to be on a stage and his voice is precious.

  26. 26 pj May 30th, 2007 at 4:50 pm

Angelia, I was commenting on the video. I haven’t seen it on my tv yet, but it will be interesting to compare the two versions when I get home from work.

It wasn’t perfect, but I enjoyed it. I’m not mad atcha Blake! I did think the self-harmonization part was cool. I’ve seen pre-Idol videos of him singing live and looping his own beats that were really good, so I have high hopes for this improving.

LisaB, I think he has a future in production as well.

  27. 27 moody May 30th, 2007 at 5:02 pm

are all these comments re the video or the actual appearance

I saw it on tv this morning.

  28. 28 SLR May 30th, 2007 at 5:13 pm

Blake seems like a sweet guy and definitely cute, but enough already with the Maroon 5. Move on!

  29. 29 xoxoyc May 30th, 2007 at 5:51 pm

    What the HELL was THAT?

  30. 30 jpfan May 30th, 2007 at 6:00 pm

If the Idol gig fails, he can start a Maroon 5 tribute band.

  31. 31 folk May 30th, 2007 at 6:22 pm

no blake said he was going to do that on tour…with the loops. loops are cool…just fix glitches.

kt tunstall does almost every song with loops. go see her live.

  32. 32 longsong May 30th, 2007 at 6:45 pm

I love that Blake tried something different. The technical difficulties were distracting, but he handled it well and I could see what he was trying to do.

In a way it was better than performances by winners on Regis & Kelly in years past, where there’s just a rinky-dink piano to sing with. The sound on those performances were disappointing in their own way too.

At least the overall sound quality seemed to be better for Blake with all his gizmos. Too bad the timing was off.

  33. 33 JulieR May 30th, 2007 at 6:52 pm

I haven’t seen KT Tunstall live but I have seen her on several TV appearances. Her loops, etc., blow me away - it seems effortless for her.

Hopefully, it will seem effortless for Blake by the time the tour starts. :-)

  34. 34 GeminiDolly May 30th, 2007 at 7:21 pm

What the heck was that? It was a mess. But I still like Blake, he seems like such a sweetie. But seriously, what was that?

  35. 35 Giggy May 30th, 2007 at 7:34 pm

Love Blake, love what he is doing but today’s performance just flat out went wrong. And that happens from time to time. Wasn’t the first, won’t be the last.

  36. 36 Who'sUrDaddy May 30th, 2007 at 8:06 pm

I read all the comments, then watched the video and Blake’s performance exceeded the expectations that had been created by the comments.

    I thought he sounded great.

Don’t know how many are familar with kt tunstall, but she’s terrific
expecailly on “Suddenly I See.” Likely most have forgotten but back in AI4, a contestant named Katharine McPhee did a kt tunstall song, called ‘Black Horrse and Cherry Tree’ and it was pretty good. (hehe)

Say hello to Dallas for me.

  37. 37 pj May 30th, 2007 at 8:21 pm

I watched it on TV and it does sound much better than on my carpy speakers at work. I still love that he harmonizes with himself. I also think LB2 explained the glitches perfectly. Nothing that can’t or won’t be fixed. :)

  38. 38 Lisa B May 30th, 2007 at 9:14 pm

I’ve seen KT live, Blake has nothing on her performance wise.

    He’s talented but I’m not convinced he’s a performer.

  39. 39 maracaibo May 30th, 2007 at 9:22 pm

I think Blake is an awesome performer and he showed that on AI.
Don’t you remember his You GIve Love a Bad Name or Time of the Season, I Need To Know, performances? Those were HOT.
I really think that with time Blake will become a HUGE star. Can’t wait to see his career evolve.

  40. 40 star May 30th, 2007 at 9:48 pm

I think Blake is an excellent performer. Geez, he brought a mini-rock concert to the AI stage with his first performance of “You Give Love A Bad Name.” I thought it was as good as anything I’ve ever seen on any awards show.

Anyway, thanks for recording this MJ! After reading all the comments earlier today I was scared. It was fine - he overcame that little glitch at the beginning nicely. As I understand it, he performs “She Will Be Loved” a lot at his shows in Seattle. Maybe he was just a little nervous today (and got thrown for a loop *snerk* at the start).

  41. 41 pj May 30th, 2007 at 10:12 pm

ITA agree that he’s an excellent performer. I really didn’t realize at first watch why he had to make the intro longer because he covered so well for it. There was a great report on teamplaid.com from someone who was lucky enough to be in the studio audience. No worries in my mind at all for Blake. :)

  42. 42 scooter May 30th, 2007 at 11:44 pm

Had a glitch at the beginning and the end-but the in between-I loved it:) I like that song and his voice is perfect for it. Sometimes things mess up and the important thing is to work it out without panicking. He worked it out and didn’t have a melt down. Kudos Blake.

  43. 43 bean99 May 31st, 2007 at 9:33 am

The recap at Team Plaid was good. He and Jordin were also on TRL yesterday which I missed. No performance but a cute bit with Blake beatboxing and Jording singing at the end. Here’s a link to clips of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NnwW2A0VoW0
