Is Harry Smith looking a little long in the tooth? And Blake and the beat boxing — hmm….a little bit too much? I didn’t like the performance, liked the song, but I wasn’t a blake supporter. His vocals lack something, don’t know what it is — his vocals just lack something maybe feeling? emotion?

I wouldn’t look for emotion for this song. I look for energy, and he had it. It’s not an easy song to sing live, he did a decent job IMO.
Just got his CD btw, and it’s SOO addictive. It just gets better each time I listen to it :O

Loved it. Not a blaker girl, but this kind of performance could make me one! Wooooooo!!!!

    My eyes; my ears.

Me thinks this video/song/TV appearance will cause Clive to pull out the last 3 strands of hair he has left. hehehe

Oh Blake, please rest the voice… this looooong promo tour is just starting.

Positives - the band is FANTASTIC. You can tell they’ve been playing together for a while. And what personality! I bet they will put on fantastic concerts when the tour starts. I really can’t wait. *subliminal message to TPTB*HouseofBluesHouseofBluesHouseofBlues*end subliminal message*

While I’m glad that his band in general doesn’t have the polished “look” of a boyband - OMG, KJ really is adorable. And yeah, I can see how he and Blake could be mistaken for twins from a distance (not up close though).

On soapbox for a second - I know that Blake is known as the “beatboxer” and he really does have incredible skill, but it almost annoys me how so many people are so enamored of *just* that. But, I did like how the female host of the show, after talking to him about beatboxing, said “but that’s just a part of who you are.” Um, yeah!

Wait a minute, do people really think this was a bad performance? I thought it was great and I’m not even a fan! Fans are way too critical of thier “idols”, imo.

I think it was a great performance, but Sarah is right, his voice sound strained. Very different from when he was on the AI tour.

I usually love his vocals but it seems to me there is something going on. This song is also very hard to sing live IMO.

I’ve read that he still has problems with his bronchitis, and that the doctor told him he had cists on his vocal chords. Is that right? Poor Blake, I hope he gets better. He is going to need to recover in order to promote the album well. I loved the outfit. He looked really nice.

Um….was he always that chunky? There appears to be a little jelly roll around the middle now.

  9. 9 star Dec 6th, 2007 at 7:46 pm

I knew when I saw Blake perform this in Nashville last Friday night that it would come across well on TV! His voice sounded stronger then…I really hope his health is okay. :sad_tb:

I loved the skit he and Jared Cotter did at the beginning of The Sauce!

Heh. IMO he was a lot skinnier when he started AI and PRE AI.
Somehow he gained weight on Idol and never lost it. He still looks cute though, chubby or not.

Thanks for posting, MJ! Kinda cold there this morning, eh? Here too.

I thought it was a fun performance. Love the band. So much energy! Can’t wait to see them live. Blake said they were going to start with 1000-seat venues. Sounds good to me!

According to Johnny Nails’ (guitarist) email today, they’re playing a showcase for Clive tonight, do Regis and Kelly in the morning and then fly to MN to do a show that night. Not sure when he’s going to have a chance to rest his voice.

    I recommend hot tea. :)

Laughable. I will be gracious enough to leave it at that.

I loved it, I think he’s much more fun live than on CD. thanks for the link!

I thought it was a great performance. Had me smiling! Very energetic, and Blake appeared to be having a lot of fun. He’s a natural on stage.

  15. 15 primeminister Dec 6th, 2007 at 11:44 pm

I thought he did well considering the difficulty of performing this song live. I was sort of looking forward to the part towards this end where he sings “break anothaaa” in higher notes and so was thrown back when he didn’t. With that aside, the outfit and the energy were great!

  16. 16 primeminister Dec 6th, 2007 at 11:47 pm

By the way, I find it really interesting that Blake’s ballads are more popular than his more upbeat tracks (on iTunes at least).

  17. 17 pj Dec 6th, 2007 at 11:50 pm

primeminister, I love the upbeat tracks more. Unless you count “How Many Words” as a ballad (I don’t, but some do). I LOVE, LOVE that tune. :)

  18. 18 Tony Dec 6th, 2007 at 11:55 pm

As Paula would say, “You had a lot of energy and you really felt the song. Good you for!”

As Simon would say (or, rather, ask), “What…the hell…was that?”

  19. 19 pj Dec 7th, 2007 at 12:16 am

Hmm. I seem to recall Simon saying Blake was the best performer, but not the best singer. So perhaps he would have enjoyed it. *shrugs*

Not going to speak for others..

Not a big Blake fan but thought that he performed well live.

  21. 21 stelladallas Dec 7th, 2007 at 10:27 am

Blake was doin’ his thang. Killer band. I’m going to have to add this song to my workout music.

  22. 22 tinawina Dec 7th, 2007 at 12:33 pm

I thought that was good. I’m a little surprised by the negative reaction as well. Oh well. I hope he does ok in the long run, he’s certainly creative.

  23. 23 cheese Dec 7th, 2007 at 1:04 pm

OK, this I can watch (the official video, not so much). I didn’t think Blake’s voice sounded any better or worse than usual, and it was a good performance, especially for the first TV appearance

I broke down and moved a unit for Blake (my daughter really likes Break Anotha - even the video, I think it must have hypnotized her). She actually wanted all 352 tracks on the album, too. I’m slowly coming around on a few songs.

    Vocal problems?

He’s had them since the start imo.

  26. 26 GeminiDolly Dec 7th, 2007 at 6:05 pm

    That was an energetic mess.
