I read an article today that of the 70 actors and musicians that were invited as presenters and nominees to the Golden Globe Awards, they all turned down the invitations because they will not cross the picket lines. There probably won’t be a Golden Globes show this year, possibly no Academy Awards either.
Will there be any kind of repercussions or backlash against artists and actors who cross the picket line to be on Leno or Conan etc? Maybe it was not a good idea for Blake to do this.
Blake’s problem has nothing to do with crossing a picket line.
The first 10 seconds of his performance reminded me of monkey’s in a tree, wailing (all kinds of squalling) and, after that, it was repeat, repeat, repeat.
Not only that, he’s getting thick around da middle and his fathead is getting jealous.
Smooth performance, Blake sounded really good! His concerts are going to be so much fun! I like all his interactions with his bandmates. KJ needs to find a way to get more facetime.
My favorite part of “Break Anotha” live is when he hits the “dear God not me!!” line.
No….awards…shows…gah!
I just don’t get Blake’s music. I’ve tried, but I just don’t. Glad his fans got to see him though!
Watched Blake on Leno, agreed that the first few seconds unnecessary and off putting, hate the odd squalling noises, looks like he’s gets a bit nervous and jerky and compensates with more dancing and movement, it is then all about the dancing and the song gets lost. The Song growing on me, but he needs to tone it down just a bit, and focus on selling the song, imo
Wow…..yikes……
If my poor hubby could have moved like Blake did on Leno last night, the kidney stone would have passed oh so much more easily! *sigh* Pix
Since I own a copy, I think I can safely say that ADD is NOT the best CD by an idol ever (that still goes to Josh Gracin IMO)…buuutttt…I really love watching Blake perform. It’s just plain out fun.
Ah, then that would explain the noise and and jumping around! j/k :)
Because they are all members of the SAG union, who have pledged to stand in solidarity with the writers union.
Blake isn’t a member of SAG or the WGA, so, no, I don’t think there will be huge repercussions for him.
Unless Blake wants to join one of the unions, then they’ll have long memories about him crossing picket lines.
He’s expressed interest in sketch comedy. This might become a problem in the future if he wants to pursue that avenue.
Fabulous!! That’s definitely the best I’ve seen so far!
Great job, Blake!!
ETA: Does anyone else find themselves singing the “monkey in the tree” part along with the cd version of the song now that we’ve seen this live enough times?? LMAO.
I too cannot WAIT to see these guys in concert. They’re gonna put on a GREAT show.
If I were Blake, I’d worry about getting this music thing right before comtemplating a career in sketch comedy.
I doubt a union would punish a nonmember for crossing a picket line. I think people should cut Blake some slack on this one. He works for 19 and I doubt has the clout to say no to anything.
I dont think crossing the picket lines will have any impact on Blake at all. As jpfan said, he probably doesn’t have the ability to say no even if he wanted to.
I really like this song but found his performance a bit frantic. Maybe that’s Blake’s style. He’s not boring on stage - that’s for sure. I’d worry about getting whiplash if I ever saw him perform live, though… :)
Count me among those who can’t wait for Blake and the band to tour. That was lots of fun.
I thought slavery had been abolished in the US?
You can always say “No”. Especially on moral grounds. What are they going to do to him? If they are so spiteful that they will ruin your career over one “No”, you’ll probably end up getting them mad in the long run anyway. So you’re doomed. Might as well follow your conscious on this one.
Not to say he’s evil for crossing the picket line, just saying that he could have said “No” if he felt strongly about it.
If Huckabee thinks he can get away with crossing the picket line for the first high profile “scab” broadcast of Leno, I’m betting the WGA and it’s ilk are pretty toothless. I’d like to see him meeting with somebody the Teamsters were striking against. I’m betting Blake will get away with this one too.
Blake should go into comedy — I laughed my head off watching him.
Besides, the average entertainment consumer really doesn’t care about this strike. All they care about is that their favorite TV shows come back on air as soon as possible. If the strike drags on, I’m guessing the writers will eventually look like the bad guys.
Leno is writing his own monologues in direct violation of WGA strike rules (actually, my guess is that he’s really using scab writers to help him out). His fans are just happy to have him back on their TV sets.
I was very impressed with Blake’s performance on Leno. Love the energy, his ease on the stage, the interaction with the band members - the whole vibe is fresh and fun. The song may not be the greatest, but he’s wrung out every ounce of its potential. He’s much more entertaining to watch than Jordin, which certainly won’t hurt in the long run. I would pay to see these guys perform, which is saying something since I am very discerning when it comes to who I pay to see (although I’ll go see anyone if I get a comp ticket!)
Fangirly in me kept thinking how cool it was that I actually met him! Blake knows how to turn it up when he has to and this performance was really critical for him… the first Idol to hit the talk shows and all. I think he’ll do okay.
what a mess.
I’m betting Blake and his band will put on a great live show. These are musicians he’s been playing with for a while–they seem to gel really well. I’ll definitely be checking them out on tour.
So did I - until I heard about some of those 19/AI contracts. :) Sure he could’ve said no but I’m sure he was “encouraged” to do otherwise - if he even questioned it, that is. He may have just said “Oh cool! Leno!” and not given it a second thought.
I have to agree with Kirsten. Blake had a choice to do Leno or not. The repercussions if he didn’t do it could have been bad, but we always have a choice. That said, I think he made a good one, given that he’s not a member of either union. It’s not his battle.
I support the writers and hope they get their share of the revenue from online streaming, etc, but I’m not going to boycott AI or other reality shows like they want. LOL.
I love Blake’s vocal scratchings, but I can see they aren’t for everyone. Loved the energy, too.
Yep, that’s likely how it went down. LOL.
Totally agree. I think it would’ve been incredibly bad judgement to turn that appearance down. I’ll bet he starts reaping the sales benefits very soon. His performance was definitley entertaining and the song is really good, imo.
Aww, I thought Blake was going to do two songs (i.e., Break Anotha and some other song that doesn’t annoy me so much). I watched with the sound down because I like the pink-haired guy. Heh. I have to admit to liking 2 or 3 songs on ADD now that I’ve heard it a bajillion times (my 10 yr-old really likes most of it, even Surrender)
I had a problem with Huckabee crossing the picket lines. The co-winner of American Idol, eh, not so much. Blake’s top priority has to be moving the units.
LOL Cheese. We like to call him PHJ (Pink Haired Johnny). He’s definitely a lot of fun on stage.
I can’t wait til a tour schedule comes out. Blake and the band are gonna be a blast live on stage, I bet. I’ll definitely be going to any show they do in Tampa or Orlando. And depending on the schedule, I might also travel to a show or two. :)
Here’s my take on him appearing on Leno in the midst of the strike - Blake isn’t the first musician to cross the picket line to be on it, and he most certainly won’t be the last.
Sarah,
That’s exactly right! I mean look at Kimmel’s guest list for example. They are all musicians. Since Hollywood is staying loyal to the writers, all a host can get right now are musical guests, animal experts, comedians, and politicians.
I must say I loved Blake’s performance last night and yes, Pink Hair Johnny is awesome! :D
You have to hand it to Blake for not being dull and boring. He always adds a different twist to the song each time and I love that about him. This is why I think folks watching Idol responded to him so well.
I thought he did well on the show. I support the writers for the most part but don’t care all that much if people cross the picket line. I did think it was funny that Huckabee didn’t know he’d be crossing it until the press told him.
Oh right! And I have a bridge to sell ya. lol.
Artists owned by 19/Murdoch are certainly going to do everything they can to bust an American union. Murdoch has a worldwide stake in killing unions and competitive media of any kind.
