Blake Lewis’s New Single

According to Team Plaid, there are “strong rumblings” that Blake Lewis’s new single is going to be…

“How Many Words”

Radio impact dates have yet to be finalized, but the kids at Team Plaid are hearing early March…

ETA: He’ll also be appearing on an upcoming episode of American Idol. No date set yet…

ETAA:  “How Many Words” is my second favorite song on the CD.  My favorite? “1000 Miles”…

Blake’s new single…who the hell cares. Now I know how the non T fans felt when I kept talkin’ about when and what his single would be. Now even I can say who cares to that as well.

I really like only two songs on the album (OK, I’ll admit, I’ve never made it to track #23 or whatever, but I’ve heard at least 10!) and this is one of them. If radio likes Tattoo, I don’t see why they wouldn’t like this one.

Bonus - Blake won’t feel compelled to hop around screeching like a monkey during his promo performances with this one! (although the little interpretative dance he does to HMW in his AOL sessions, especially at the beginning, cracks me up)

Yay Blake. :smile1_tb: He’s supposed to go on AI too, but we don’t have an exact date yet.

Well, it’s nice to see that the Crack Marketing team is still gainfully employed.

March? At the rate his current single is falling down the chart, it’s going to be long gone by March. The art of single releasing seems to be to release the new song just as the old one is peaking. It almost seems as though program managers seem to be more willing to try spinning your new song as a replacement for your existing song.

He’ll also be off the Top200 at that point which means that most vendors will have long since stopped re-stocking his CD.

Plus, they announced Jordin’s new single way back last year. Marketing teams tend to have these things figured out in advance. They aren’t throwing darts at the album listing long after one single has clearly failed.

[Scene: CMT sitting around in their shared office. CMT1 is tipping back his chair and is slowly blowing bubbles. CMT2 is crumpling up letters from clients into balls and tossing them into the garbage from the other side of the room. CMT3 is making mobiles out of demo CDs. An aura of boredom pervades the room]

Earnest Gopher [runs into the room out of breath]: Blake only has an Audience Impression of 36 thousand people and 46 spins. 59 less than last week!!!! Quick! Do Something!
CMT1[falls off chair]: Don’t rush here like that!
CMT2[throws paper ball at EG]: Man, at the speed you came in here, I thought you had the latest news on Britney or something.
CMT3[flings a demo CD at EG]: Who’s Blake?
EG: That guy from AI last year. The runner up. The one with the unicorn cover.
    CMT3: Who?
CMT1: Hey, I think I know the guy. He put out an album last year. Odious Day….
CMT2: Dreams! Yes, yes, I remember him. Didn’t he used to be in the press a lot? Whatever happened to him?
EG: He’s your client! You’re supposed to be helping him move units!!!!
CMT2: Hmm….I seem to recall something like that. Let me check my filing cabinet (starts unballing some of the papers)
CMT3: I still don’t know who this guy is.
CMT1: So, he’s our client. Why do we care?
EG: You care because he’s only had one single and his CD is tanking. Shouldn’t we release a new one?
CMT1: Oh. Sure, why not. Let’s release the second track on the album. Make it so.
EG: You already released the second track.
CMT1: Really? Okay, double it, make it the fourth one. Next month some time. I’m busy during February. I just signed up for a new on-line role playing game.
CMT3: WHO IS THIS BLAKE GUY!?!
CMT2: You know, he’s the guy that ended up paying for my new Merc last year. We were supposed to give him 100K to do a video, but I spent it on my car and we gave him 50 bucks instead.
CMT3: Oh, that guy. Do you think we should get funds allocated for another video? I need a new swimming pool. The old one got dirty.

He’s supposed to go on AI too, but we don’t have an exact date yet

I’m guessing it will be the same week his single is released.

  5. 5 t2 Feb 1st, 2008 at 9:02 am

I’m sure people will throw things at me, but if there is only one lesson I have learned about the music industry from AI it is this:

Radio play sells records. Radio play sells records. Radio play sells records.

But…it has to be MASSIVE radio play.

When I bought Carrie’s record I had toremind myself that I was buying it because I liked her and not because the radio-devil’s had hypnotized me.

This song is radio-friendly, his other song was radio-friendly. Put the marketing money behind radio and Blake will do fine.

p.s. I like the monkey sounds at the beginning of Break Anotha.

p.s.s. I don’t care how many times they make listen to that Tattoo song or ask me if I’m Over It — they can’t make me buy those CD’s.

I really hope blake does well with this second single

but singles need to be promoted and i’ve heard him doing this live and his voice just falls so flat (he doesn’t have much of a voice IMO) he is a real musical talent… not a singer.. but a musical talent

    good luck blake

  7. 7 Michelle Feb 1st, 2008 at 11:46 am

March!? is the budget tapped out or something?

I agree, take the money that would’ve gone into TV promo and put it into radio promo. TV only works to sell albums imo after you’ve had the song hammered into you by twice-hourly plays on your Friendly Neighborhood Top 40.

HMW is a good choice (1000 Miles is also a great song), it could get some HAC spins too. With all the ballads on the album it’s too bad they couldn’t release something in February. Ugh too bad that bleeding vocal cord bronchitis ::shudder:: f’d up the marketing schedule (?)

  8. 8 claireb7tx Feb 1st, 2008 at 12:18 pm

Kirsten….that was hilarious! I am home sick and stop into MJ’s to see what’s happen in AI world and read about Blake’s crack marketing team and was rolling on floor. too funny! :lol_tb:

    Mj:

“1000 Miles” is my favorite song too!
I always wonder if that track had radio potential, I enjoy listening to it. Maybe it’s too 80’s for radio, but I do love it.

I really hope for Blake’s sake that “How Many Words” takes off. It is a great record. I would hate to see ADD fade away from the charts so quickly. He deserves to be successful. I hope the AI performance combined with continued support from his label and management gives him a boost.
I also hope they really push this song to radio, massive radio airplay does sell records. Arista needs to push it.
Look at Jordin, slowly but steady she is getting there in terms of sales.
    Go Blake!

I’ll believe it when I see it. If it gets as much support at “Break Anotha” did (which was precious little), then it’s doomed.

  12. 12 Daughtry_AJ Feb 1st, 2008 at 4:02 pm

Definitely should be a bigger success than Break Anotha, but he’s got a tough road ahead of him to a hit after the complete flop of Break. If HMW suffers the same fate as BA then that’s it for ADD, since HMW is the most commercial friendly song on the album IMO.

Well someone was working to get that song exposure. Blake was all over tv performing it! Our local radio station played it some but it never quite caught on I guess.

That just about made me spit wine on my computer. Very funny.

Though seriously I do hope this single works for him. I enjoy the song, and the album. Hope this one does muchbetter than BA.

  15. 15 star Feb 1st, 2008 at 8:38 pm

since HMW is the most commercial friendly song on the album IMO.

See, I think it’s “Know My Name.” I’m happy with the selection of HMW though. That was my second choice!

  16. 16 primeminister Feb 1st, 2008 at 9:01 pm

I thought Know My Name would be a better choice, just because it featured someone more established than Blake, and perhaps could have given the song a boost, just like Chris Brown did on No Air. (Not to say that Chris is the reason for the success of the song, but it sure doesn’t hurt.)

Anyways, I wish Blake the best, and hope HMW catches on- for his sake and for the sake of “Idol”.

  17. 17 cochem Feb 1st, 2008 at 10:11 pm

Blake was doomed from the minute he signed with J Records/Arista ..see Ruben, Taylor and probably soon to be Fantasia….They purposely put them on this label so they don’t have to play any of their songs on the radio… They only have Carrie love…

  18. 18 pj Feb 1st, 2008 at 10:23 pm

I’m not blaming the label on the fact that Break Anotha was not a hit. I KNOW most fan groups like to do that, but really, he did get a lot of TV gigs and if he’s going to have a second single and appear on AI, I think that shows that they are trying. I don’t think Kat got an appearance last year.

Maybe BA just wasn’t a hit with the radio’s test markets? Why is it always the label’s fault?

I admit, I am a bit confused on how radio play works. If it’s payola, then he didn’t get it in the major markets.

I hope HMW can break through on radio, but if not, it could be that Blake just doesn’t float the public’s boat. I love the album, so I don’t get it. I think it’s radio friendly, but what do I know?

  19. 19 star Feb 1st, 2008 at 10:49 pm

:laugh_tb: Yup, I’m sure tptb NEVER wanted any of Blake’s music to be played on the radio. That’s totally why they let him record his album with hacks like JR Rotem, Ryan Tedder, and Mike Elizondo.

Maybe BA just wasn’t a hit with the radio’s test markets? Why is it always the label’s fault?

I think they honestly thought “Break Anotha” would be a hit. Why wouldn’t they, the majority of the critics’ reviews we saw loved the song. I remember it seemed like it was getting off to a promising start on radio in the beginning, so I don’t think it was lack of effort on the label’s part.

I think ADD is a fantabulous cd. My other two Idol faves are Kelly and Carrie, and IMO it’s as enjoyable as anything they’ve ever put out. I hope more people will get a chance to hear it.

  20. 20 jobbix Feb 1st, 2008 at 11:06 pm

“How Many Words can still do it for Blake!!” LOL…

However, something tells me this one is going to flop just like BA. His 15 minutes is up already and he is not as cool as he thinks…

  21. 21 Lu Feb 1st, 2008 at 11:37 pm

I’m totally surprised that BA didn’t take off. I wasn’t a huge Blake fan but I really like that song! I would’ve picked Know My Name as the second single but time will tell. I agree with PJ and Star. I do think he’s getting label support… maybe the callout for BA just wasn’t what PDs want to see. Who knows? Elliott’s second single had strong callout but it just didn’t catch on. It happens.

  22. 22 carolina Feb 2nd, 2008 at 1:40 am

I think Blake is a product of no-crossover. He only appeals to a small segment.

And truly, after watching a minute or two (on at least 3 occasions) of him performing BA on television, his approach and performance cements the no-crossover. Truly, he moves like an untrained seal. I have no doubt that he thinks belching is funny.

  23. 23 Tony Feb 2nd, 2008 at 3:24 am

Blake has a really annoying recording voice. He’s definitely not something that I’d want to listen to on the radio.

I really liked BA when I first heard it, I downloaded it, bought the album..but his live performances were terrible IMO and that could have hurt the song. when I watched him on Jimmy Kimmel he was just jumping around all over and sounded like he was howling in some parts. These TV shows can often help if you really sell the song. I was never a Kellie Pickler fan until I saw her doing I Wonder on TV shows, that made me go out and buy her CD.

Is he getting a lot of promo geared towards teens? My daughter buys teen mags pretty often and I noticed last week he’s in Pop Star as a pinup and I think Elle Girl? Or maybe Cosmo Girl, one of them.

I have to agree with this a little myuself. I do like the song but thought his live performances were frantic. As a matter of fact my 10 year old just thought it was funny and she ased me at one point “what is he DOING?”

  27. 27 bean99 Feb 2nd, 2008 at 1:42 pm

BA was never one of my favorites on the cd. I agree with Lu that Know my Name would be a better choice for the 2nd single. I think that How many Words did well on iTunes when the cd was first out so that may be why they’re choosing it.

  28. 28 marco5ny Feb 2nd, 2008 at 6:07 pm

From what I’ve seen of Blake in the press and his performances of Break Anotha, I think it’s interesting that my favorite songs of his are his mid-tempo stuff. From even a first listen, I liked “How Many Words,” “1000 Miles” and “End of the World.” Blake might be a much better writer and producer than a singer / performer. But I have a feeling Blake likes being the center of attention too much to give his songs away to someone who might make them bigger hits.

I can see Blake working behind the scenes writing/producing with other artists. From what I can tell, he seems to love collaboration. I don’t see him giving up performing, though. Why should he?

Here’s a nice interview with Ryan Tedder on working with Blake.
