    Thanks, pj!

Earl sings Something to Talk About? WTFFFFF was he thinking??

  2. 2 JOJOSIE Jul 2nd, 2008 at 12:06 am

What about Oliver, a complete turnaround and I’m glad. He may have talent besides being male.

  3. 3 hapi Jul 2nd, 2008 at 12:06 am

    For me:
Adam C..like him, but didn’t blow me away. Ok.
Jessica S..Ok, lovely voice but not dynamic enough performance.
Jessie C..Ok but not quite there.
Theo..of course he’s VERY talented and did Great! But for me he doesn’t have enough originalness/charisma. But he IS GREAT.
Katelyn..Some flat/sharp notes. Some good but don’t think she’ll make it.
Mitch..A fun performer and communicates well. Kinda wish he’d bring back the glasses. Somehow that added some kind of coolness.
Katherine..cute of course. First part I didn’t like very well or her vocal tone, but then she got into it with some raspyness and I thought OH, sure would like to hear her sing some blues.
Omar..Did VERY well. I don’t find his voice appealing for me but he’s so likeable and it was a pretty darn good performance. I’ve seen some really intense performances of this song though and made it hard for me to think it was great as the judges did.
Earl..Another on the top of my fav’s list. Has that charisma like Mookie. Can’t define it. Loved it, even tho agree he could have kicked it up a bit more on parts.
Oliver..Always intense. Like when he sings a phrase long enough to enjoy that great voice. Would like some blues from him as well.

Adam Castelli (Wyclef Jean - Gone Till November) - What the heck was this? Does hip hop even have any place in a pop-rock singing competition? Seems like a clear example of an indulgent song choice. If he’s going to sing this sort of music, I’d rather he be eliminated ASAP.

Jessica Sheppard (Rihanna - Umbrella) - One of the songs I most dislike by, imo, one of the most over-rated artists of this decade. She sang it reasonably well, I guess but this song holds zero challenge for her.

Jesse Cottam (Goo Goo Dolls - Iris) - I rather liked this rendition. It’s perhaps the best I’ve heard him sing during this competition.

Theo Tams (Howie Day - Collide) - Ridiculously effortless performance that’s super engaging. Wonderful vocals and mad piano skillz (woah to the self-taught factoid!). I wonder what would happen if we get him out from behind the piano though.

Katelyn Dawn (The Black Crowes - She Talks To Angels) - I agree about the total lack of grittiness in her otherwise very nice vocals.

Mitch MacDonald (Jason Mraz - I’m Yours) - I’m not really a Jason Mraz fan but I thoroughly enjoyed this performance. Mitch raised his game this week and this should be more than sufficient to keep him around, with strong potential for top 10 status.

Katherine St-Laurent (Cat Stevens - The First Cut Is The Deepest) - Not enough grit in her tone for this song but overall a pleasant performance.

Omar Lunan (Bill Withers - Ain’t No Sunshine) - This was Omar’s best performance yet. Quite enjoyable from start to finish.

Earl Stevenson (Bonnie Raitt - Something To Talk About) - I guess he was soulful but I thought his vocals were pretty poor. Also, I’m baffled by this song choice. I didn’t think it suited him at all.

Oliver Pigott (Elton John - Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word) - Much, much better than last week. This should save his bacon for another week. I wasn’t awed by the performance though - I thought his attempted falsetto near the end was kind of weak.

    Best performances:
    Theo Tams
    Mitch MacDonald
    Omar Lunan

    Good performance:
    Oliver Pigott

    Just OK:
    Jessica Sheppard
    Jesse Cottam
    Katelyn Dawn
    Katherine St-Laurent

    Um, no:
    Adam Castelli
    Earl Stevenson

  5. 5 primeminister Jul 2nd, 2008 at 12:38 am

Earl Stevensen- Terrible song choice. I repeat, WTF was he thinking?!

Oliver Pigott- Well selected, but it was nowhere near as good as what the judges were making it out to be. His falsetto sucks.

Theo Tams- If Earl gets kicked out or if he kicks himself out with his terrible song choices, then Theo would be my favorite. He has a beautiful sincerity when he sings. Best of the night for me. But then again, I only watched these 3 performances.

  6. 6 1girlarmy Jul 2nd, 2008 at 12:48 am

Omar can sing and I appreciate that.

Oliver was awesome, I’m glad for him because I do think he’s really talented. I love both of the Pig’s!

Theo was great, Earl I did not like at all, “Something to Talk About”? I agree with everyone, WTF? Same goes for Adam C., totally did not get that.

Mitch is sweet, I didn’t know that Mraz song but I thought it was really fun.

I sort of liked Jessica last week but I didn’t like her at all tonight. I like Katherine but she sang that song kind of like a slow lounge act. Boring.

  7. 7 redge_dc Jul 2nd, 2008 at 1:03 am

I agree with whoever said they liked Ben giving some info about the songs beforehand.

Adam Castelli - Not feeling the song. It seemed like he was trying to catch up with the music several times.

Jessica Sheppard - Just ok. Pretty much agree with the judges

Jesse Cotham - I prefer the original version. He should have lost the guitar. Distracting when he keeps looking at his fingers.

Theo Tams - There was a shot where he looked like Van Hansis…I wanna see him sing without a piano/keyboard. But he’s good.

Katelyn Dawn - She sounded good, but I haven’t heard the original. I’ll have to check out the original.

Mitch Macdonald - I’m not fond of his voice, I find it too high. Other than that, the song has a really cool vibe.

Katharine St. Laurent - Why is she sitting down? Not feeling the performance but her voice is good.

Omar Lunan - Like this more than last week.

Earl Stevenson - Not feeling the performance. Last week was so much better.

Oliver Pigott - Pretty intense does not quite describe his performance last week…Much better this week than last, but that’s not saying much. He should have lost the guitar.

The best of the night for me was Theo.

So Earl disappointed this week, eh? :s

I can’t watch the videos yet, but as I am probably the biggest Mraz fan this side of the earth and I heard that Mitch (I can’t even remember which one he is, though, gah!) did a good job with I’m Yours, I’m looking forward to watching later. :)

  10. 10 movin2thabeet Jul 2nd, 2008 at 2:03 am

Well, this was one of the times where I frequently disagreed with the judges comments. I found this evening a bit of a mess, with only one bright spot, Theo Tams.

The women had a hard time staying in tune. In my rating system, they didn’t garner any points because I found it painful to listen to them. And Katelyn - I’m getting the impression that she doesn’t know how to connect to a lyric, especially when they’re loaded with grit.

There were alot of valiant tries that were close to working, but not quite, like Adam, Jesse, Mitch, and, in my opinion, Oliver. In fact, I was shocked at the judges raving. The man seemed a nervous wreck. I really thought he was about to have a heart attack near the end there. The fact that he lost the lyrics on the second verse and struggled to correct the situation seemed to add to the tension.

I thought Omar gave a decent performance. Interesting changeup on the arrangement. His execution wasn’t especially strong, but considering the rest of the night, he was good.

All in all, I thought Theo blew past the rest of the competition, and I’m grateful for it as the night was disappointing to me.

P.S. And RemusL, you had to mention Brian Melo’s performance of ‘She Talks to Angels’. Sigh. Now that’s what it means to pour yourself into the song.

  11. 11 Lisa Jul 2nd, 2008 at 2:19 am

I still think Theo has this in the bag at this *moment*. Amberly might give him a small run (I think it will be a male who wins this tho…). Oliver is really the only one I see who might knock Theo out of his top spot.

Tonight I loved Theo, Oliver & Omar.

Earl WTF were you thinkin’? Also note to Earl *Do NOT try to dance*, boy can’t dance.

Katelyn Dawn, your on my vids because???? Token blonde? (I say this and I was born blonde, but sheesh).

The rest were just *there* for me.

I don’t think any of them were as good as Sebastian last night.

Overall standings for me right now are:
    Sebastian
    Theo
    Oliver
    Earl (you get a pass)
Martin (cause I know you have it in you to be a *Clay*)
Amberly (just has done nothing for me yet).

How I think the Top 3 will go down in the end:
    Theo
    Oliver/Sebastian
    Amberly.

Oliver could knock Theo down to #2, but his performances need to get better than his bro’s cause his bro brought it last night. I see those four with a *possible* record deal. I know Theo is technically perfect I just wish he had the Pigg’s charisma & vice versa.

If there are any CI producer’s lurking, I would pay for iTunes from CI. I would also buy multiple copies of Oliver/Sebastian/Tatiana cd’s. Those three would make an awesome group!

  12. 12 redge_dc Jul 2nd, 2008 at 2:34 am

    Thank RemusL!

I’ll check those out after work :).

  13. 13 Dlynne Jul 2nd, 2008 at 4:19 am

I am also wishing for some iTunes.

Theo was really, really good. I’m reserving great for later.

I know I’m in the minority with this opinion but Mitch sounded like Jason Mraz on helium. I love that song and have often thought that it would be perfect for Jason Castro if it didn’t already belong to Jason Mraz. My problem is that it’s too current to be covered now without being compared to the original.

I have the same criticism for Theo’s “Collide”. Fortunately, he didn’t butcher it. I much prefer an older song rearranged to be more current. David Cook is the master - and that is even more apparent seeing these two shows back to back.

I agree with everyone else on Earl’s song choice. Not good. He just looked goofy singing and dancing.

At least I wasn’t embarrassed for Oliver tonight. He still comes in second to his brother, in my opinion.

As for the girls - I’m thinking this is going to be a really strange top 10. Even though Zack was practically begging Canada to vote for Katelyn Dawn, I’m predicting nine boys and one girl.

  14. 14 primeminister Jul 2nd, 2008 at 6:08 am

    Yes, Sebastian > Oliver.

My favorites right now are Earl, Theo, Mookie, and maybe Martin (that’s a big maybe).

IMO, Top 10 will (or maybe should) be (in no particular order):

    1. Theo
    2. Earl
    3. Mookie
    4. Martin
    5. Sebastian
    6. Amberly
    7. Gary
    8. Omar
    9. Oliver
    10.

Jessica, Drew, Paul, and Adam can fight for the last spot.

  15. 15 Hazehel Jul 2nd, 2008 at 8:24 am

I liked the first night performances more than this one, I thought most did well the first night, I even liked Mark Day’s performance. I especially liked Amberley Thiessen, Drew Wright, and Gary Morrisette. I think most performed poorly on the second night, but I like Theo Tams and Oliver Piggot’s performances very much. I also think this week is better overall than last week.

Some observations - The contestants chose a more varied selection of songs than on AI, and the show is the better for it. Most of the girls aren’t any good, so the show is terribly unbalanced in gender terms. Although there isn’t anyone of the calibre of David Cook or Archuleta on this show, I could listen to a few of the contestants as recording artists.

Stupid judge’s comment of the night - “You can sing a bad note, but if you look supremely confident, no one will notice.” Only if you got a tin ear, buddy. (Anyone with a good ear will notice a bad note, but may choose to ignore it if the overall performance is good. It’s got nothing to do with looking confident.)

  16. 16 flicker Jul 2nd, 2008 at 8:39 am

I have a bad feeling that my favorite, Adam, is toast tonight. He went first, and his song just wasn’t memorable. I really like the guy, though, and hope he sticks around.

  17. 17 itsalleternal Jul 2nd, 2008 at 9:36 am

Theo was definitely the best of the night.

I’m thinking Adam and one of Jesse, Jessica or Mitch going home. Adam was by far the worst.

  18. 18 J.S.G. Jul 2nd, 2008 at 2:36 pm

Anyone else notice when Theo plays the piano, he never hits the black keys? Still, he is performing on a different level.
Mitch and Omar took a step up to that level last night.
I liked Adam better than Oliver whose falsetto really bothered me in that Elton John song.
So there has to be more than one female in the top 10, because nine out of 10 being male is just too weird. Which explains the generous comments to Jessica, Katherine and Katelyn Dawn, as hopefully one or two of them grows into the role.
But right now, I just don’t see it.
    Yikes.

  19. 19 LadyBeBop Jul 2nd, 2008 at 4:41 pm

    Yikes.

    A couple of predictions.

    1) I wouldn’t be surprised to see four females go tonight.

    2) Instead of a top 10, we’ll see a top 12…just so we’ll see more than one female in the top tier.

Is there a place to download CI mp3s? I’d love a few Theo songs for my iPod.

  20. 20 marco5ny Jul 3rd, 2008 at 12:02 am

    Excellent:
Theo Tams - Finally a good singer picked a good song for his voice. Talented piano player also. And he loves orphans too! We’ll be seeing a lot more of Theo and that’s a good thing.

Omar Lunan - Nailed it. Bluesy version of Ain’t No Sunshine really worked. Might have skipped the falsetto but I’ll still give it to him.

Willing to Give a Second Chance:
Katelyn Dawn - Attractive blonde. Maybe not a good song choice but voice has potential. I’m intrigued.

I Just Didn’t Care For This Group:
Adam Castelli - Wyclef Jean is not exactly known for melodic songs that showcase a singing voice. Not sure what Adam was thinking.

Jessica Shepard - Mid Tempo slowed down pop version of Umbrella. Might have been interesting if we hadn’t seen so many similar attempts already on youtube and everywhere else. Maybe if she had done a full acoustic version?

Jesse Cottam - Just not a strong enough of a vocalist for one of the most romantic songs ever — Iris by the Goo Goo Dolls. Poor.

Mitch MacDonald - Seems like a nice guy but can’t imagine him making it as a singer. Not a very strong voice.

Katherine St-laurent - A teenager with no life experience trying to sing First cut Is the Deepest. Add in the fact that she threw in some really off key notes and you get a misstep.

Oliver Pigott - He’s so impressed with himself, he doesn’t need my vote.

  21. 21 purplesmile Jul 3rd, 2008 at 10:35 am

ACKKK!!! I finally managed to watch Mitch’s performance of I’m Yours. Did. Not. Like. :s

  22. 22 justantonio Jul 3rd, 2008 at 2:05 pm

Adam C- terrible…I got excited when he said he was doing a wyclef song..since he did the fugees during his audition and it was great…but this was terrible…way better wyclef songs he could have done and been great. Have you heard his original material on his myspace? terrible too…i hope he changes his style
    Jessica S-boring…over played song
Jessie C- dude is lame poser
Theo-guy has skillz..love that he does current songs..and does them well
Katelyn- i don’t remember who this is
Mitch- do not like the tone of his voice..he will not make top 10
Katherine-tons of potential to be great
    Omar-That was fantastic
Earl-wtf was that…he was all over the place..but still sounded good…just looked ridiulous
Oliver-last week was a disasterous i dunno even what to call it…this was beautiful…what a beautiful song…great song selection

  23. 23 sue Jul 4th, 2008 at 12:27 am

Finally got caught up with CI tonight since I was so excited about the AI tour. Thanks for the recap MJ. Back on topic. Theo own this week without a doubt, that boy is super talented. I was so disappointed with Earl, WTF was that? I girls were all just meh to me. I didn’t think Omar or Oliver was that great, just better than last week. Overall an ok night. It’s obvious who the frontrunners are. Oh I felt like Theo was channeling Archie with that hoodie grey striped number, it’s cute though. Theo is a masterclass with that piano. He just took the lead in my book.
