ETA: Some thoughts:

CI is pretty awesome. I really dig the cheeky sense of humor. I’m starting to look forward to the competition rounds.

  • Khuram Sher - Montreal - The Pakistani immigrant that sang “Complicated” in full cultural garb was pretty hilarious.
  • Amberly Thiessen, 19 - Seven Persons, AB - Liked her folk vibe a lot. judges loved her.
  • The Ben Mulrooney blooper reel– “A brand new season of American Idol!” Ha ha. You wish!
  • The death metal guy Philippe Langelier went went to Toronto for reals? When he gets there, maybe we’ll find out that he can actually sing.
  • Pretty redhead, Katherine St. Laurent, Otterburn Park, QC, is only 16, but she’s got pretty good pipes. She’s one to watch.
  • Shaun Francisco, 25 - Vancouver, BC - Shaun sparred with the judges. I guess you can get away with that on CI. He’s pretty good, but Jake finds him boring.
  • Pat Milino, 22 - Coquitlam, BC - The season’s swing guy needs a new wardrobe. He says he doesn’t want to do swing, but that’s his niche–he should probably stick to it.
  • I thought the guy from West Africa, Vincent Vorkpor, 23 - Vancouver, BC - kinda sucked. I’m really surprised they put him through to Toronto.
  • Kayla Luky, 19 - Venlaw, MB - Good performance of “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree.” Many of the CI girls are Brooke White types.
  • Katelyn Dawn, 18 - Steinbach, MB - Mixed reactions from the judges, but she’s got a nice sound.
  • Steven Porter, 16 - Lorette, MB - Changed up Van Morisson’s “Moondance”. Very nice. Judges LOVED him.

So they have a girl named katherine who is their own “OMG YOURE ONLY 16?!?!” girl this year.

I don’t understand AT ALL why they let that death metal rocker dude, Phillipe, go through. That’s just a waste of space.

Amberly Theissan is cute and good, but I think song choice will be hard for her.

I liked that Shaun guy - he reminded me of my past two year favorite of Greg Neufeld, but not nearly as much fun to look at as Greg was.

This year they are allowed to sing their own songs, if I remember correctly. I think AI might take that part up for season 8 - they “stole” CI and Australian Idol’s idea about the instruments.

um- i wonder if the REALLY let Old Man River through. this show is really strange.

  3. 3 Duke Jun 9th, 2008 at 10:49 pm

Frank Sinatra jr. sounded much better on stage, i look foward to seeing what he does (hopefully)

  4. 4 Lisa Jun 10th, 2008 at 12:30 am

Yeah Frank Jr, Pat Milino (22) was really good on stage, I did not care for his audition, but the kid can sing. Steven Porter (16) was good, different. Amberly Thiessen (19) has a pretty voice. Kayla Luky (19) was also really good.

Are they purposefully not showing the *great* singers or is this the best they have? Sorry for asking but this is my first time for CI.

Shaun Francisco (25). Boring? Not. Interesting? Yes. I like this kid. There is something very nice about his voice. I will have to compare him to last week’s peep’s but he is my pick from this batch.

“Are they purposefully not showing the *great* singers or is this the best they have? Sorry for asking but this is my first time for CI.”

Haha this is Canadian Idol Lisa, Not American Idol. They are deff showing the best they have to offer. Especially when the judges say, “this is the best guy i’ve seen,” its hard to get around that. And i think frank sinatra jr was just nervous and he sounded crappy in his audition. I hope he and black horse and cherry tree girl make it real far.

That Death Metal guy is the one to watch. Of course he will not sing death metal on the show cuz then everyone will have a headache :lol_wp:
We heard him sing briefly with his father and he was really good.

  7. 7 awilliams Jun 10th, 2008 at 1:14 am

Dang…I’ve got that Aussie guy’s song stuck in my head! LOLOL.

Liked Shaun and young Steven Porter.

Yeah, I wondered about the “this is the best guy i’ve seen,” comments too. Huh?

I really liked the girl who covered Brandi Carlile and the guy who covered “Van Morrison” not Michael Buble.

Thanks for putting these on the blog, MJ. If Canadian Idol runs for about 5 months, that’s only 2 months out of the year that I have to endure without Idol!

  10. 10 lrlpalmer Jun 10th, 2008 at 3:28 am

Actually, for the record, most of these singers are NOT the best that Canada has to offer. But it doesn’t really surprise me that some of you would think otherwise.

And the old man? He’s a famous Canadian news anchor. It was a joke.

Honestly, America is not the only country in the world that can produce high caliber musicians. More musical opportunities, sure, but better musicians? No way.

how does one watch CI? Do only border states get canadian stations? I feel pretty dumb not knowing the answer to this?

  12. 12 t2 Jun 10th, 2008 at 7:39 am

Did Sass tick off the makeup guy or what? Seriously — mascara, Sass — give it a try.

  13. 13 wfowfowfo Jun 10th, 2008 at 7:46 am

Watching these auditions was fun, MJ. Some interesting talent for sure. Thanks for putting these up — I’ll be following CI from Virginia! Hopefully my family won’t have me committed for this. Anything to deal with my withdrawals from AI.

  14. 14 geekygirl Jun 10th, 2008 at 8:47 am

You can watch it if you don’t get it on your tv at the place where I used to watch AI CI

  15. 15 t2 Jun 10th, 2008 at 8:58 am

Lounge singers and back ho operators — I love Canada.

CI isn’t run on American TV, which is why I’m posting the videos that Geekygirl linked to in the post above. It’s the entire show in 6 parts.

  17. 17 Shaw Jun 10th, 2008 at 12:48 pm

I’m not sure if it’s worth the edit, but in your title you spelled Winnipeg as ‘Winipeg’. There are the two n’s in Winnipeg. Oh well, I’m sure it’s not killing anyone. :P

Double post here, but I think it would be in bad taste to criticize someone because they don’t wear as much makeup as say Paula Abdul. I think she looks fine the way she does.

I’m about to watch, but I’m guessing the La Fetus was aborted again? Damn. I love her thread over at Worst. I was really looking forward to finally hearing her sing.

    Yes. Sigh.

  22. 22 skylight1219 Jun 10th, 2008 at 10:51 pm

Seems the same on CI, as AI. Only a select few get their backstories shown. Why is it I like these judges more than Simon & Company? I’ve watched CI in the past before some got a cease & desist for posting the videos. This was a few years back.

  23. 23 Dlynne Jun 10th, 2008 at 11:19 pm

I’m really liking this. Thanks, MJ.

BTW, I think your recap is right on.

  24. 24 erinnthered Jun 10th, 2008 at 11:58 pm

    Yes. Sigh.

Bummer. I’m still really liking these auditions. Unlike AI, I don’t feel dirty after watching them. Plus, Ben just doesn’t take himself seriously…and I like Ryan!
