Mookie Morris is eliminated tonight. Drew Wright is Bottom 2.
WTF? Mookie Morris was simply fab Tuesday night. He made “Come Together”, a song I always found rather dirge-like, completely fresh and groovy. When Mookie takes the stage, I can’t keep my eyes off him–in my opinion, the definition of a star. Oh Canada, don’t you want a star as your Canadian Idol? No? Damn you Canada!
I kid, Canada. You know I love you. Actually, there are two more stars left in this lineup. The other contestant who takes to the stage with ease and confidence is Earl Stevenson. He used the Joe Cocker arrangement of “A Little Help from My Friends”, but his rich, soulful performance this week was pure Earl. And the classically trained Theo Tams was a little disappointing last night as he over-sang and over-runned “The Long and Winding Road”, but he was all I hoped he’d be when he performed “Let it Be” in the group number tonight. Earl and Theo should be the Top 2.
Not stars are the second half of the Top 4, Mitch MacDonald and Drew Wright. Neither have the vocal chops, confidence or performance skills of either Earl or Theo. Both were pretty wretched in the group sing. Mitch’s whiny delivery did nothing for “Blackbird” and Drew’s lame attempt to rock up “Eleanor Rigby” was not very convincing.
But at least Mitch has a definable sound. Drew is like Zelig, taking on the artistic personalities of the performers he’s covering, rather than emerging in this contest as a unique artist in his own right. Who is Drew Wright? Heck if I know.
Mookie smashing his guitar at the end of his singout? Totally awesome.
Finally, I was once confident that I’d never ever ever have to hear Anne Murray sing again in my lifetime. Oh well. She’s the guest artist next week. Maybe it’s good Mookie didn’t live to see that…

Thanks MJ I appreciated your opinion as it’s about the same as mine. I doubt if too many Canadian care about AI and very few Americans are watching CI. It seems like much of Canada doesn’t watch CI either. I think Drew has a good recording voice. He’s not in the same league with Daughtry but I find both have good recording voices but don’t have great performing skills, They got CD a band pronto and it really helped his performances, imo. Good recording voices sell more records than performance skills however. Then we have Cookie who has both.
To make sure I wasn’t giving Drew an unfair shake, I youtubed him. The first thing that came up was a version of “Hallelujah” in front of his home town crowd. It was hard for him to get through it because the crowd was insane. Umm, let the guy sing. At the same time, it’s his encore. Not a good choice, dude. Great song, but if you want to sing a song like that, I don’t think it’s an encore.
He obviously has a following and has some good taste in music. I still fail to see the magic. He’s cute and I do believe he’s talented. That’s about it.
I want to thank MJ for CI. I am thoroughly enjoying the videos while waiting for AI to come back. It’s a great substitute for cheese. Kind of soy cheese, but good nevertheless and relatively harmless.
I was thinking that the top 5 were really good and it was one of the best shows of the year if not the best.
Taking them one by one:
Earl was the best, IMO, both watching and not watching. He does do better when he tones down his energy and *weirdness* a bit. The Quasimodo remark made earlier does fit his strange moves, but I don’t think anyone can deny that his performance of Cocker’s arrangement this week was super.
Mookie: Walking away from the computer…not that good…mumbles a bit and maybe not the greatest voice….but watch him and his body is almost another instrument…it pounds out the rhythm and his performance skills are untopped by anybody. I feared for him…for some reason Toronto boys are having it tough, but I still can’t say his voice is great. He IS a star, but his voice is not the best. JMO.
Theo: a bit disappointed by his arrangement of The Long and Winding Road. I wasn’t particularly thrilled by his phrasing and liked the original and other arrangements better. I was slowly won over by TCO slowly until this week. I didn’t hear any glory notes, just a lot of self *indulgence* Not his best. As for “Let it Be” it seems most with a decent voice can sit behind a piano (see Brooke White) and make that song sound good. BTW, IMO, Brooke did it better and she doesn’t have the strongest voice in the world, altho a very good coffee house, folk singer, much like her male counterpart Jason (who did have two great performances, Hallelujah and SOTR
Mitch: I have nothing to say. VFTW chose him correctly after the Mark Day left. His voice is definitely on helium and I just am not enamoured of him. Sass seems to love him and with Mookie (her other fav. M&M) gone, she will talk him up, no doubt. I do believe *My Life* was a good choice for him, but I still just don’t like the quality of his voice and probably never will. He should be done, gone, verboten. If he lasts beyond this week, I will be surprised. AGAIN, LOL.
Drew: the favorite whipping boy of the judges. I have to agree with the singing lady. He does have the best voice IMO and so many of the judges’ comments about him have hypnotized everyone into thinking he has no sound or emotion of his own. I don’t agree. In retrospect, although I did enjoy his performance a lot this week, I have to wonder why the judges picked the most obscure song of all for him. To bury him? Maybe.
As for the Cookie comparison, who was my favorite from the beginning, even before Hello, yes, there are some similarities in looks, built, voice, but the Eleanor Rigby thing as said by some was the choice of TPTB, not Drew’s. They all are puppets of the all seeing powers and have to dance as the strings are pulled. Voice wise, I thought Theo and Drew were the best, but Theo didn’t do it with The Road and I don’t know the song they gave Drew, so I have no comparison, although I thought he sang it very well and with emotion. Even Zach stood up and applauded (I truly believe Zach hated him before then and took every chance to rip him apart, concentrating on his *glory note* but non identification with the lyrics) Maybe? But I don’t see it.
With all the good things that I said about Drew, I still think Earl had the best performance this week.
I would like Mitch gone this week. No doubts there, and then Theo, but I think Theo is TCO and will probably win with Earl second.
I’m not complaining. Thanks, MJ for a great summer filler. I never watched a whole show on the computer before and it was really enjoyable.
If anyone wants mp3 files of Mookie and his old band, you can message me. I am probably the biggest Mookie fan there is, and i have 4 of his songs, as well as 4 of his band’s songs. Just message me, and I’ll gladly send them to you…!!!!!!!!!!!
:):):):)
Yes, Eleanor Rigby was the TPTB’s choice, but I don’t think they choreographed it to have him fling out his arms like DC did. But, maybe someone else did IDK.
I haven’t followed the entire season of CI and don’t know much more than the fact that I will be following Mookie’s career. Just the same as DC’s. I never thought Idol would have affected me to this extent before these two came on the scene. In fact I never, ever dreamed I’d watch any of CI let alone an entire season of AI.
