Carly Simon Surprises Brooke White on Fox and Friends - VIDEO

Brooke White

Carly Simon congratulates Brooke White on her success on Fox and Friends this morning. Brooke was completely surprised and delighted. Carly says that Brooke has a distinctive sound, which is probably what kept her from advancing further. She also tells Brooke that she “loves” the way she did “You’re So Vain”, and that she herself could never do the song as well as Brooke. It’s a nice exchange…

She really is lovely. I’m glad Carly Simon called in and gave her props!

What a treat for Brooke. Glad to see her smiling again!

    How incredibly cool!

Brooke is a lovely person and it was so generous of Carly Simon to not only compliment her in the press, but to call in to Fox. I hope Brooke takes Carly’s advice, and that she goes on to success in her career - which may or may not mean mainstream multiplatinum sales.

I really appreciate you posting this, mj! Thrilled for Brooke! I’m sure that was something she’ll always remember.

    How cool is that?!?!?

Here’s hoping that with such a public endorsement, maybe someone will see Brooke as worth taking a chance on.

    Very cool for Brooke.

I didn’t like Brooke’s pre-Idol album very much, but I am excited to see (and buy) what she has to offer post-Idol. :)

That was beautiful. Brooke has good things ahead of her, I believe. She’ll be just fine.

Awwww…. I’m sure that was an awesome surprise for her.

BTW, Brooke’s studio version of “I Am I Said” is hauntingly beautiful.

  9. 9 wfowfowfo May 1st, 2008 at 12:08 pm

Gwen - thanks for the heads-up on Brooke’s “I Am I Said” — I was at ITunes getting I’m Alive and Blue Jeans and forgot all about Brooke.

Does anyone know who decides which song they put up? I think I would have rather had Cook & Castro’s other songs… or both would have been even better. Idiots at AI. They’re missing out on $$ through their own short-sightedness.

My guess is that putting the contestants through 2 studio recording sessions would be a bit much. They seem exhausted enough as it is.

I Am…I Said is another strong track from Brooke.

As a diehard Brooke fan, this clip makes me so happy. The fact that Carly Simon, a legend in my mind (and we know in Brooke’s mind too), took time to offer words of encouragement to Brooke is so incredibly amazing to me. I got misty-eyed watching it.

I know Brooke had her problems on the show, but her voice, especially her voice in the studio, is so incredibly distinct and lovely. Not to get all cheesy, but her voice cuts me to the core like no other Idol contestant. I’ll even go so far to say that Brooke’s is one of my favorite singing voices ever. I might get accused of having limited musical knowledge with the aforementioned statement, but that’s okay. I love the imperfections, the way it catches sometimes, and yes, I even love her limited range. I appreciate that Brooke, along with Jason, have brought a singer/songwriter vibe to Idol, and hopefully similar artists will come out of the woodwork to grace the Idol stage in future seasons.

I hope Brooke gets the chance to make another album. I truly believe she could become a bonafide artist and have a very successful career. Heck, she’s already got Carly Simon on board!

Thanks for posting this clip. It made my day!

    Ditto that.

Thanks for the clip MJ - I’ve been out all morning and forgot to se the dvr. Have I expressed my undying devotion to you lately?

That’s great for Brooke! She was my favourite from the beggining but I’m not sad she left. I also think she will be just fine and I’ll be waiting for her songs and her new album. Good luck, Brooke ^^

I am trying to rid myself of the fantasy that she will drop her hubby and run away with me. ( but it is hard!)

I am glad to see the smile on her face!

And - it is nice to see her in such a good mood.

I am a die-hard Carly Simon fan and I compared Brooke to her in my mind from the start, like many others. How cool that Carly took the time to call in to the show and speak to Brooke!

What you said UhHuh - I also hope Brooke gets the chance to do another album, I’d buy it.

Wow, that exchange between Carly Simon and Brooke White was amazing. Not just amazing because of what Carly Simon said, but Brooke’s response sounded like it was written by one of President Reagan’s speechwriters. Articulate, heartfelt, humble, appreciative, and genuine - all of the things that Brooke is and wants to be known for. Kudos, Brooke! Best wishes on your career. I’ve been a fan since your initial audition, although like Carly Simon said, I always thought that you were so unique that you were not really “American Idol” material (and I mean that as a genuine compliment). I am just happy to have been able to see you perform up to this point because I think you’ve got something really special going for you.

Really awesome for Brooke to have a legend gush over her. IF Brooke is a good songwriter, she can have a career because her genre is doing well on Top 40.
    But that’s a big IF.

  24. 24 StevenD May 1st, 2008 at 2:50 pm

I think with Brooke’s look, appeal, and unique voice she’ll defiantly be signed by 19 after everything. In fact I would be surprised if Both David’s, Jason, Brooke, Carly, Kristy Lee, and Michael Johns all end up with deals at the end.

  25. 25 jpfan May 1st, 2008 at 2:59 pm

I’m not sure about the signings. The music biz is in the toilet and Clive is out of the picture. AI does give them all that free publicity but it still costs $ to get a decent album out. They have to find the songs, producers etc. So I’ll make a guess that no one but the two Davids get signed by AI.

I can see Carly and Johns if they join existing bands but I don’t see them as solo artists. Maybe Kristy Lee will get a small country deal. Brooke and Jason are totally dependent on their songwriting abilities with Brooke having a much better shot at a 19 signing.

  26. 26 abbysee May 1st, 2008 at 4:59 pm

Jpfan, I agree about the signing as far as 19 is concerned. I have said weeks ago that that was a done deal. You don’t have to read the tea leaves for that. However, there are other labels and I think that given the talent this year, I see a few indie labels and maybe some other labels picking over this group as well. No matter how horrible this is turning out for me, this groups talent is undeniable. Oh, for the record do we know if Clive is really out of this picture? Or is that speculation because of his ‘demotion’. Remember this is Clive “rising from the ashes” Davis we are talking about.

    Awww.
Wasn’t that so great of Carly Simon?!

I went ahead and cried. :glurps_tb:
    That was awesome for Brooke.

Thanks so much for posting this!

I am really going to miss Brooke. Her unique voice. Her unique style. She lasted longer than I expected, so that was a treat.

With her gone, and if Jason should go, we are down to the predictable, in my view.

  29. 29 Chicago-sally May 2nd, 2008 at 9:33 am

That was fantastic. You know — AI will have to change what it defines as an American Idol. In the beginning it was “pop” idol, somebody who could sing pop songs (Leona?), and it’s turning out to be almost every genre. The winner(s) don’t have to be pop singers, they can be folk singers, broadway singers….and I give props to the producers for allowing ‘different’ voices and ethnicities to audition and be heard.

That must be such a special moment for Brooke!

I want to hug Carly Simon for doing that for her!
