Thanks to John, who just happened to be watching his niece compete in the Footlocker Cross Country National Championships in San Diego today, when Carly Smithson appeared to sing the National Anthem.

I just saw this on Rickey.org, so thanks for posting it here MJ. Carly sounds amazing!! Her fans have missed hearing her sing since the tour ended, so we’re happy to see this video. We are anxiously awaiting a studio video and article that Richard Rushfield from the LA Times is working on for next week (her mom told us about it in a chat), so hopefully we’ll get some news on her album soon.
well that just proves that american idol is NOT just a singing competition, or she would have won.

Having been like most to allot of sporting events and hearing the NA. Carly is among the top tier of singers that I have heard this includes non American Idols. She does not add much,does not oversing it and keeps in her comfort zone….

BTW, No one ever seriously questioned whether Carly could sing, just whether she could sell. The latter question remains largely unanswered, imo, but I hope she does well (this time around.)

I agree, weareallinnocent, Carly has an amazing voice, but I’d be hard pressed to know from Idol what she’s planning on doing with it. I hope she does something I love!

Yes either her or Archie would have. I still maintain that those two have the best natural voices to come out of Season 7. Both of them do absolutely killer renditions of this wicked hard song and no one else in my opinion has come even close to matching them on it. I predicted her and Archie as the Top 2 back in the Hollywood and Semifinal rounds. She struggled on the show with other things though, more than I could’ve predicted.
Didn’t I read somewhere that Carly just got her citizenship, if so this is a nice way to celebrate it!
Carly has a beautiful voice, no doubt. I’m looking forward to see what she is going to come out with though. That is what is going to determine whether I buy her music or not. Just in the sense that her biggest problem IMO is trying to figure out who she is musically. She was kind of all over the map on Idol.
That was incredible. I do agree that she has no idea who she is musically or what she should do with that beautiful voice. Frankly I don’t think Carly is really a rocker chick. She may look the part, but I think she needs to take it more Chaka Khan like Simon told her during the show. She’s got a big soulful voice. I think she needs to do a Chaka meets Celine kinda vibe. She needs to sing something to support that big voice, but with a cooler vibe.
Carly has a great voice and knows how to use it. Here’s hoping the music industry stays healthy enough that she gets a real chance to make a living as a recording artist because I’m definitely along for the the ride!
