Congrats to Carrie Underwood! Her album, Play On, debuts in teh #1 position on the Billboard 22 chart after moving 318K units this week. Via Billboard:
Carrie Underwood’s “Play On” bows at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart this week, shifting 318,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
It’s the country star and former “American Idol” champ’s second album to top the Billboard 200, after her sophomore set “Carnival Ride” bowed in the penthouse with 527,000 in 2007. Underwood’s debut effort, “Some Hearts,” started at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in 2005 and at No. 1 on Top Country Albums with 315,000.
“Play On’s” 318,000 sum is also the largest sales week for an album by a woman in 2009 and the second-best sales week for a country release. Among country efforts this year, only Rascal Flatts’ “Unstoppable” netted a bigger week, when it started at No. 1 with 351,000.
Artists aren’t selling CDs these days, so those are some pretty good numbers. Tonight, Carrie co-hosts the CMA awards with Brad Paisley. She’s also be performing, and is up for a couple of awards, including Female Vocalist of the Year.
In other chart news, the first Glee TV soundtrack, which enters the chart at #4 with 113K. The next installment of the Glee soundtrack is due 12/08.

YAY!!! Congrats Carrie!
Those are great numbers for Carrie, and I think what also works in her favor is that she tends to not have too much of a drop off in sales, she will plug away selling boatloads every week. I bet she will have gone Gold by Thanksgiving.
To be precise:
1 Carrie Underwood “Play On” 317,695
4 Glee “Vol 1 – Glee: The Music”: 113,243
Congrats on notching another number 1 Carrie. I hope Fred gives us another update on Idol number 1s this week in Chart Beat.
In today’s music climate and economy these are huge numbers. And well earned. Carrie just keeps on delivering. Play On is another strong album.
These numbers are awesome! It’s so easy being a Carrie fan. I never have to worry about her. lol.
I’m surprised how much I’m liking Undo It considering Kara’s involvement, but it’s definitely a strong contender for a single.
Congrats Carrie. I always loved your music.
Girl has won me over, totally. And Bo Bice was my original Idol pet.
Wow I am so happy for Carrie and the success she has achieved. She has worked really hard. She is my favorite Female idol (will Kelly, Carly and Kimberley Locke close 2, 3 & 4) I think her numbers will be huge (Platinum)by the time the holiday season is over.
Way to go Carrie!
Congrats to Carrie as well. I picked up the CD over the weekend, it’s wonderful. “Temporary Home” is a moving, tender and beautifully sung piece, that track alone is worth the price of the CD. Don’t miss it, or the rest of it. You will not be disappointed.
Yay, Carrie! I love her new album.
congrats Carrie! I’m going to download some songs of her! I like much her voice and some catchy songs
Congratulatons Carrie! Great job. I’m *still* waiting for Amazon.com to deliver my CD. Starting to lose patience here…
Me too!
I hope this CD sells like Some Hearts or even Fearless coz this really is a good album she’s put out
Carrie was my first Idol “pet’” before I knew anything about the crazy internet idol world. LOL, I thought all Idol winners were destined for stardom after following Carrie’s career. This is a really great record that I have been listening to constantly since I downloaded it. After listening to another out of tune Taylor Swift performance on the CMA’s, I appreciate how truly talented the top Idol’s are vocally.
These are great numbers in this era. Awesome for her.
Excellent news for Carrie, congrats. The girl is a country Star, no doubt about it.
Interesting year we’ve had here; all of the ‘big 3′ Idol stars have released albums (Kelly, Daughtry, and Carrie) and each has proven by similar first weeks sales why they are the biggest Idol stars so far and that albums can still be sold in big numbers even in a music climate where conventional wisdom says albums don’t sell as well anymore.
Congrats to Carrie
