Phil Stacey Makes his Debut on the Grand Ole Opry - Plus Phil, Bo Bice and Bucky Covington featured in a Video During Top 9 Dolly Parton Week

Remember when Randy Jackson told Phil Stacey last season that he was going to have a career in country music? It’s happening. Phil’s debut album of country songs is set to release next month, and his single “If You Didn’t Love Me” is currently charting on the Billboard Hot Country Songs Chart.

This weekend, Phil solidifies his country bonafides. He’ll be performing on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry, Saturday March 29th. He’ll perform his single, and also premier new material from his upcoming album. Go Phil!

Also, from Phil’s weekly column, Phil’s Pages, from Idol Chatter:

Speaking of the fine folks from American Idol, one of my good friends from the production team, Norm, came to Nashville this past weekend. He was here to film a segment about a few of the past Idol contestants that have decided to make Nashville home. If I am not mistaken, the segment features Bucky Covington, Bo Bice, and myself. It should air April 2, on the same week that Dolly Parton will be a mentor.

So there ya go–Dolly Parton will be the mentor next week for the Top 9. Plus, we’ll be treated to a video update on Bo Bice, Bucky Covington and Phil Stacey. Good stuff!

Pre-order Phil’s CD at Amazon:

Billboard Idol Update for Issue 11/17/07

Check out this week’s massive Idol Billboard update!

The highlights:

  • After the Eagles managed to sell 700K of their latest album “Eden” through a record deal exclusive to Wal-mart, Billboard decided to revise their chart policy that kept Bo Bice’s new album (also a Wal-mart exclusive) off the Billboard 200 last week. This week, Bo’s latest effort, “See the Light” “debuts” at #150 on the Billboard 200. It would have debuted at #89 last week if it had been eligible.  The Eagles’ “Eden” debuts at #1,  Britney Spear’s “Blackout at #2 and then…
  • …Carrie Underwood’s “Carnival Ride” drops 2 spots to #3. She’s #2 on the Top Country Album chart, displaced from the #1 position this week by the Eagles.  Her sales dipped 68% this week, to 170,100 from 527,101 last week.  Her total so far: 697,626.
  • Katharine McPhee’s “SOTR/My Destiny” re-enters the Hot Singles Sales chart this week at #48
  • Jordin Sparks continues her climb up the charts.  She could hit the Billboard Hot 100 Top 20 next week if the trend continues.  Her album drops on November 20.

Here it is. This week’s big Idol Billboard Update

Highlights:

  • The major highlight this week? Why, of course, Carrie Underwood’s “Carnival Ride.” It debuts on the Billboard 200 at #1. It’s also #1 on the Country and Digital album charts. “Carnival Ride” sold 527,101 units this week, 44,928 were digital. Arista shipped around 1.4 million copies–it’s already gone platinum.

  • Her single, “So Small” climbs from #36-#20 on the Billboard Hot 100, #83-#43 on the Pop 100, #4-#3 on the Hot Country Songs chart, and it re-enters the Hot Digital Tracks at #16. “Before He Cheats” re-enters the Hot Digital Songs chart at #67. Another cut off the new album, “Just a Dream” debuts on the Pop 100 chart at #96 and #55 on the Hot Canadian Digital Singles chart.
  • Bo Bice, Carrie’s season-mate and runner-up, released his sophomore CD, “See the Light” exclusively through Wal-mart. The exclusive deal makes it ineligible for the Billboard 200. However, it charts at #91 on the Billboard Comprehensive Albums chart.

Here are the stats: Billboard Hot 100#39-#34, Hot 100 Airplay #74-#61, Pop 100 #24-#22, Pop 100 Airplay #26-#20, #19-#17 on Hot Digital Tracks, and #22-#19 on Hot Digital Songs. • Daughtry’s “Over You” debuts on the “Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks” chart at #28.

Billboard Update for Issue 10/13/07 and Idol Record News

It’s YOUR Billboard Idol Update, right HERE!

Highlights

  • …And the Idols who still have a presence on the Billboard 200 have seen their albums dip even further this week from last week’s lackluster showing. The highest charting CD is Daughtry at #41. Carrie Underwood’s “Some Hearts” follows at #75, Kelly Clarkson’s “My December” at #99, and Elliott Yamin at #122. Upcoming new releases from Elliott Yamin (10/14), Carrie Underwood (10/23), Bo Bice (10/23), Jordin Sparks (11/20) and Blake Lewis (11/27), should soon add a little Idol heat to the Billboard 200.
  • With the release of Jordin Sparks’ single, “Tattoo” to iTunes last week, comes its debut to the Billboard Hot 100, at #58. “Tattoo” also debuts at #21 on the Hot Digital Tracks and #22 on Hot Digital Songs. It climbs from #70 to #32 on the Pop 100 and #40 to # 36 on the Pop 100 Airplay charts. The digital single sold 33,780 copies its first week.
  • My Bad. Daughtry’s rock single “Crashed” debuted on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart LAST week and I inadvertently left it off. Sawry. The good news is that it debuted at #32 last week  and climbed three spots to #35 this week…

Idol Record News

  • Check out Kelly Clarkson’s new video for “Don’t Waste Your Time” at Ricky.org. Anyone still under the impression that “My December” is full of depressing pop dirges, needs to check this out. This song, or the bright and poppy “How I Feel” would have made good first singles from “My December” in my very humble opinion.
  • Idol Christmas music coming your way: Elliott Yamin releases a Target exclusive Christmas album on October 14 as part of the NBC Sounds of the Season music collection. Check out the track list here. Carrie Underwood and Kellie Pickler are featured on “Hear Something Country”. Carrie Underwood sings “Do You Hear What I Hear” and Kellie Pickler? “Santa Baby.”
  • Jon Peter Lewis has teamed up with Authentic Records out of Des Moines Iowa. Not only will they be distributing his debut CD “Stories From Hollywood,” JPL will also have the opportunity to tour with bands from Authentic’s roster, like The Nadas and the Josh Davis Band.  Without label support, it’s been nearly impossible for Jon to get together any kind of a decent tour.  Authentic’s roster is comprised mostly of rootsy folk, rock and blues and will introduce him to an entirely new audience.  That’s a good thing.

Billboard Update: Issue date 09/29/07

This week’s Big! Idol! Billboard! Update! WHEE! Right here.

Highlights (and random music news):

  • Not Idol related but interesting: Kayne West’s CD “Graduation” debuts on the Billboard 200 at #1, posting the album chart’s largest sales total in more than two years. He handily won the well-publicized pr stunt feud with Fifty Cent, whose album “Curtis” debuted at #2 selling 691,000 copies. Here’s the big news–The Top 4 sellers on the Billboard 200, West, Fifty Cent, Kenny Chesney (his album debuted at #3 selling 387,000 copies) and Hanna Montana (133,000 copies) together totaled 2.2 million units, more than all titles combined on last week’s entire Billboard 200. Wow. Back to Idol…
  • Fred Bronson of Billboard’s Chart Beat reports that Carrie Underwood’s huge hit single, “Before He Cheats” is now, after 55 weeks on the chart, in the top 10 longest-charting songs in the history of the Billboard Hot 100. If it hangs on another 5 weeks, it will be in the top five. This week, “Before He Cheats” dips a bit on the Hot 100, from #32 to #39.
  • Season 5’s Mandisa had a good week on the album charts. Her CD “True Beauty” climbed from 195 to 143 on the Billboard 200, from #12 to #6 on the Top Christian Albums chart, and #13 to #7 on the Top Christian and Gospel albums chart. For more on Mandisa’s post Idol journey, read here.
  • All the Idols, except for Mandisa (23% increase) and Daughtry who climbed one spot, from #22 to #21 (11% increase) suffered declines on the Billboard 200 this week.
  • On the song charts, Daughtry’s “Over You” continues its climb, from #38 to #37 on the Hot 100. Check out the video for “Over You” at VH1 VSpot. I can’t figure out if the chick in the video killed her boyfriend or not…and who is getting over who?
  • Jordin Sparks’ “Tattoo” climbs the pop charts (from #84 to #75 on the Pop 100, from #45 to 40 on the Pop 100 Airplay). Carrie Underwood’s single “So Small” takes a hit on the Hot 100–from #17 two weeks ago, to #25, to #44 this week. The surge two weeks ago was due to her single being made available on iTunes. Her video just debuted on CMT this week. Why is it that cars are always being destroyed in her videos? heh. I expect the song to climb next week. It did climb a bit up the Hot 100 Airplay chart–from #52 to #45.

Much, much more after the jump! So CLICK!

Here are the highlights:

  • Bucky Covington’s new single “It’s Good To Be Us” debuts at #54 on the Hot Country Chart.
  • Elliott Yamin’s “Wait For You” debuts on yet another chart.  It debuts at #42 on the Hot Dance Club Play chart.
  • Moving up the charts this week:  Jordan Sparks’ “Tattoo” moves from #88 to #84 on the Pop 100 and from #45 to #48 on the Pop Airplay chart.  Daughtry’s “Over You” moves from #44 to #38 on the Hot 100, #53 to #47 on the Hot 100 Airplay, #27 to #22 on the Pop 100, #20 to #16 on the Pop 100 Airplay, #13 to #11 on the Hot Adult Top 40, #48 to #36 on the Hot Digital Tracks and #54 to #40 on Hot Digital Songs.
  • Not only did all of the Idols’ sales numbers decrease this week, but it was the worst week for album sales in the history of Soundscan. Downloads were up 5%.
  • Check out Bo Bice’s My Space page for music clips from his upcoming album, “See The Light” due to be released October 23.

Billboard Update: Issue 9/15/07

Here is this week’s Idol Billboard Update. Just for You!

Highlights:

  • Jordin Sparks’ debut single off her forthcoming album (due to be released November 20), “Tattoo” debuts on the Pop 100 at #88 and the Pop 100 Airplay at #48.
  • Carrie Underwood’s new single “So Small” shoots up the Billboard 100 from #93 to #17, thanks to the digital single being released on iTunes last week.  Some interesting information via Fred Bronson’s Billboard Chartbeat column: “One effect of Garth Brooks’ receiving so much airplay this week is that other artists received fewer spins than they would have if radio wasn’t devoting so much time to “More Than a Memory.” That helps explain why Carrie Underwood’s “So Small” (Arista) dips 11-13 in its fifth chart week on Hot Country Songs. The track should rebound, but meanwhile the availability of a digital single sends “So Small” soaring up the Hot 100, with a move of 93-17. That’s the second biggest jump on this chart in 2007, topped only by the 94-3 rocket ride of Beyonce and Shakira’s “Beautiful Liar” the week of April 7.” “So Small” debuts on the Pop 100 at #23, and the Hot Digital Songs at #6.
  • Kimberley Locke’s “Band of Gold” moves up from #20 to #19 on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart.  She’ll be featured on the Dave Koz and friends Christmas Tour starting on November 26 in Baltimore MD.
  • Not on the chart–YET: From Bo Bice’s My Space, “Bo Bice’s new record “See the Light”, due out October 23 as the first release from his newly formed $ugarmoney/StratArt Records, teamed Bo up with producer Frank Liddell. The result is a fresh and soulful take on Bo’s Southern Rock roots; it’s the album he was born to make!”

More Idols Dropping Albums Soon

I’m pulling this out front from another post where I had it buried after a jump.  Just in case y’all didn’t see it.

Season 5’s Ace Young has been signed to S Curve Records.  His CD is set to drop in September with a single released in July.  The album is being executive produced by Desmond Child, with songs written by Diane Warren (who has written for many Idols including Taylor Hicks and Carrie Underwood) and Andreas Carlson.  Ace says he is writing or co-writing all the tunes on the album.  All Top 9 Idols from Season 5 have signed record/distribution deals at this point.  Taylor Hicks, Katharine McPhee, Elliott Yamin, Chris Daughtry, Paris Bennett, Kellie Pickler and Bucky Covington have all released CDs.  Mandisa’s album is due out later this year.

Bo Bice and Constantine Maroulis from Season 4 are both working on new albums.

Bo Bice is recording the album with country producer Frank Liddell, and features Rolling Stones keyboardist Chuck Leavell, Black Crowes drummer Steve Gorman,  legendary session guitarist Waddy Wachtel and bluegrass icon David Grisman. It features songs co-written with A.J. Croce (son of Jim Croce) and Chris Tompkins (Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats”). Bo wrote 31 songs for the album and is narrowing down the list to 10-12.Rumor has it that Bo has left RCA. It looks like Bo has gone back to his Southern rock roots with a vengeance and is doing his own thing.

Bo recently cancelled 3 shows in order to make a mid-September release date.  “In order to make the now scheduled mid-September release date for his forthcoming CD, BO BICE will immediately return to the studio to complete recording.”–from a press release.

Unfortunately, Bo cut his Tuesday night Anaheim, CA show short due to illness.  I hope it’s something innocuous and not a flare-up of the intestinal troubles he’s battled the last few years.

Constantine Maroulis’s album “Constantine” will drop August 7th on his own label with distribution from Sony/Red (distributors of Elliott Yamin’s CD). The album features songs co-written with Matchbox Twenty singer Rob Thomas, and Nashville songwriter Angie Aparo. Two songs, “Everybody Loves” and “A Girl Like You” are being featured on “The Bold and The Beautiful.” Constantine currently has a recurring role on the CBS daytime soap.

Here is your Idol Billboard Update. Better late than never.

The Highlights:

  • Elliott Yamin’s appearance on the Top 3 Results show to sing his single “Wait For You” paid off in a big way.  His album Elliott Yamin climbed from #67 to #20 on the Billboard 200.  It also climbed back to the #1 spot on the Independent Albums Chart, from #49 to #20 on the Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart, and re-entered the Top Digital Albums chart at #14. The single, “Wait For You” climbed from #80 to #31 on the Billboard Hot 100, entered the Hot 100 Airplay at #72, climbed from #45 to #23 on the Pop 100 and from #28 to #24 on the Pop 100 Airplay.  The single also entered the Hot Digital Tracks and Hot Digital Songs charts at #19 and #26 respectively.
  • As Clive announced on the American Idol Finale, Carrie Underwood’s album “Some Hearts” has gone 6x platinum.  The album has shipped 6 million units.  Good for Carrie.  The album charts at #8 on the Billboard 200 and #2 on the Top Country Albums chart.
  • Daughtry’s single “Home” continues to climb the charts, from #13 to #5 on the Billboard Hot 100, #26 to #21 on the Hot 100 Airplay, #11 to #7 on the Pop 100,  #12 to #9 on the Pop 100 Airplay,  #7 to #4 on the Hot Adult Top 40, #10 to #4 on the Hot Digital Songs, and #7 to #3 on the Hot Digital Tracks chart. Daughtry’s appearance on the finale could bump the single into the #1 position on key charts next week.
  • Reba McEntire’s duet with Kelly Clarkson “Because of You” enters the Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart at #42.  Her single “Never Again” is stalling on the charts.  Her appearance on the Idol finale should give her a bump next week.
  • Fantasia, who is currently winning rave reviews on Broadway in the “The Color Purple” also has a single out that’s currently climbing the charts.  “When I See You” has climbed from #71 to #62 on the Billboard Hot 100, from #46 to #36 on the Hot 100 Airplay, from #14 to #8 on the Hot R&B Hip Hop Singles and Tracks chart and from #14 to #8 on the Hot R&B Hip Hop Airplay chart.

Great news for Bo Bice fans. Bo will be singing the theme song to the new Will Ferrell movie Blades of Glory. Producer Ben Stiller has been a fan of Bo’s since his Idol run and invited him to work on the song. You can listen to the tune at the official Blades of Glory My Space.

Don’t forget! The Academy Awards are tonight at 8 PM on ABC.  Our girl, Jennifer Hudson is nominated for Best Supporting Actress and is the favorite to win. Jennifer and the other “Dreamgirls” will be performing a song from the film. Beyonce who?

Also, it’s been reported that the Academy has changed things up a bit this year.  Traditionally the best Supporting Actor and Actress awards were presented in the first half-hour of the show. This year, all of the acting awards will be presented later in the evening.

Additionally, Jennifer sat down for an interview with Barbara Walters.  Walter’s Oscar special will be broadcast at 7 pm, right before the Oscar telecast on ABC.

And, more on the whys and wherefores of the Chris Daughtry penned “Home” being chosen as this year’s boot song.  It just makes sense financially to keep it all in the family, doncha think?

Check out a snip of Elliott Yamin’s soon-to-be-released single on You Tube.  The jazzy, neo-soul inspired “Movin’ On” will be digitally released on February 13.  Elliott’s debut album will be released though Hickory Records, and RED distribution.

Last week, Chris Daughtry announced that his guitarist Jeremy Brady was “gracefully bowing out of the band”.  DAUGHTRY started a major tour this week, so the race was on to find a replacement. Chris interviewed several new guitarists and has hired Brian Craddock. Brian is 30 years old and hails from Virginia.  He’s written and produced for several indie artists.

Dumb Rumor Update:  When I read this week, that Courtney Love had supposedly been asked to replace Paula Abdul on American Idol, I laughed out loud.  I didn’t believe it for a second.  First, no matter how loopy or incoherent Paula is, she’s an integral part of what makes the chemistry work between the three judges.  Personally, I think Randy Jackson is more expendable than Paula.  Secondly, Courtney Love replacing Paula?  There are those who consider Paula a trainwreck.  Comparatively speaking, Courtney Love is a Tsunami.

So, imagine my non-surprise when it was revealed that the whole thing was probably a
