This Week’s Season 7 Auditions

Ryan and BrandonUnfortunately, little things get in the way of my blogging.  Like my job, for instance. Just a little thing. Ha.  Between travelling this week, and catching up at work, I am behind on my blogging, as usual. Good thing, the blog continues on without me, as LisaB and Kirsten keep you guys and informed and massively entertained every day with Idol news and chart and sales news (respectively). Thanks guys!

While I was away, Idol auditions took place in Atlanta, GA this week.  My blogger buddy Rodney Ho from the Atlanda-Journal Constitution was on hand at the Georgia Dome to blog the excitement–from registration, to the auditions, to first-person audition accounts. Ryan Seacrest was there as was Constantine Maroulis who was appearing on behalf of Garnier hair products (?!!?)

Fifteen-thousand hopefuls waited in line for their chance to audition for the first-line producers and hopefully move on to the producer and judges rounds.  Rodney interviewed repeat auditioners, and Season 6’s Brandon Rogers and Kimberly Caldwell covered the event for TV Guide.

Auditions begin today in Charlston, SC. By Thursday morning,  4,000 had arrived to wait in line.  By this morning, the number grew to 9,000.  The next city on the schedule is Miami, FL, Wednesday, August 22.

Season 6 Digital Song Compilations available at iTunes

Season 6 Idol studio performances are now available at iTunes.  There is a digital Greatest Hits compilation for 7.99.  Check out the track list.

  1. Blake Lewis - You Give Love a Bad Name 3:09
  2. Gina Glocksen - Paint It Black 3:21
  3. Melinda Doolittle - As Long As He Needs Me 2:59
  4. Chris Sligh - She’s Not There 2:02
  5. Sanjaya Malakar - Besame Mucho 3:42
  6. Lakisha Jones - This Ain’t a Love Song 3:57
  7. Chris Richardson - Smooth 4:05
  8. Haley Scarnato - Turn the Beat Around 3:30
  9. Stephanie Edwards - Love Hangover 2:43
  10. Brandon Rogers - You Can’t Hurry Love 2:56
  11. Phil Stacey - Blaze of Glory 4:48
  12. Jordin Sparks - This Is My Now 3:50

Greatest hits? Hmmm.  I would have swapped out Gina Glocksen’s ”Smile” for “Paint it Black” or pretty any other Melinda Doolittle performance for “As Long as He Needs Me.”  For Chris Richardson, I would have chosen “Don’t Let the Sun Catch You Crying” or “Change the World.” I would download all three Chris Sligh performances–any one of them could have made an appearance on this compilation.

What do you think?

For you completists, $29.97 will fetch you the “Collector’s Edition”.  This digital compilation has 76 songs–every Idol studio recording made during the season, except for Jordin Sparks’ “Living on a Prayer.” (It was available on americanidol.com during the season, but has been dropped, for some reason).

All 76 songs are available as individual purchases for 99 cents.

Jordin Sparks’ and Blake Lewis’ tracks are available as mp3s at americanidol.com until June 20th.  If you buy from the American Idol site, it’s not included on the Billboard Charts (19 has declined to send the figures to Soundscan)  So, if you’re a fan who likes to see your fav on the charts–you’ll want to purchase their EPs and individual singles from iTunes.

No word on whether anything will be released on physical CDs.

Finale Recap

Jordin Sparks looked exactly as I pictured her in the moment of her Idol victory.  Her win was certainly no surprise after Tuesday’s show, where Blake proved to be no match for Jordin’s prowess for power-emoting treacly lyrics.  Personally? I think it’s as it should be. Jordin is the perfect winner. Too bad the show ran so long we could not get some extended moments of Jordin revelling in her triumph with her fellow Idols.  The confetti machine appeared to be on the fritz, too.  Damn.

Biggest complaint about last night’s mostly entertaining finale?  More Idols, please.  Really, did we need to hear Gwen Stefani pimp lip sync sing her new single from an undisclosed location?  I would have rather had another medley from the kids.  Last year’s finale was so good, because it was filled with appearances from the performers who make Idol what it is–the KIDS.  In fact, Prince was the only guest last year to appear WITHOUT also performing with the Top 12.  This year, there were five solo performances from guest stars.

Having said that, I enjoyed performances from Tony Bennett and Green Day anyway.  The aforementioned Gwen, and Bette Midler–not so much.  Smokey Robinson, Gladys Knight and Joe Perry of Aerosmith were not only entertaining, but they all played nicely with the kids.

“It’s the night we’ve all been waiting for.  Who will take the title?  The beatboxer from Seattle, or the sweetheart from Arizona. The world is watching…This is American Idol!  For the last time this year…sniff. Continue reading ‘Finale Recap’

Idol News Roundup

Here’s a roundup of American Idol news for ya…

People magazine reports that Jennifer Lopez is excited about her upcoming Idol appearance on April 11.  Lopez says that she “thinks” the week she appears will feature a Latin theme.

A Los Angeles Times reporter sat in the Idol audience both Tuesday and Wednesday last week.  Some of his observations: Watching the contestants “absorb their fate” in person is truly visceral, one can feel their pain and it is uncomfortable.  Some of the performances are better in person than on TV and vice versa. The contestants seem very close.

The reporter is observant, and has some interesting things to say about each contestant, and the judges.  Worth the read.

Here is another in-person account of last Tuesday and  Wednesday’s shows from Entertainment Weekly’s Popwatch blog.  More observations:  The stage is teeny-tiny. The judges talk all through the contestants performances. After the first break, the judges work the crowd. LaKisha Jones is a tad aloof. Chris Sligh is a hugger. Chris Richardson and Blake Lewis were both teary-eyed at Brandon Roger’s elimination. Popwatch will be dispatching reports from the CBS studios all season.

Nick Hexum from 311 was in the audience for the men’s Top 8 performance night to hear Blake Lewis sing his band’s song, “All Mixed Up.” As far as Blake’s performance, Hexum feels Blake “did it well…He gave it a cool arrangement that had a little bit more of a straight groove than our version. He changed it around and had a lot of fun with it. I have only positive things to say.”  Hexum also added that he thinks Idol is “good TV” and that he’s a Fantasia fan.  Added fact:  Nick Hexum’s brother Zach is friends with Brandon Rogers who made the connection to the band for Blake. American Idol Extra Premiers Tonight

Just a reminder:  American Idol Extra premiers on the Fox Reality cable channel at 6:30 pm ET tonight, and is repeated at 10:30. It repeats many times throughout the week.

AI Extra interviews the Idol bootee–tonight that’s Brandon Rogers–moments after they are eliminated. Mikalah Gordon and Matthew Rogers are co-hosts and conduct behind-the-scenes interviews.  Ex-Idols also drop by to be interviewed, or are featured in video clips.

Fox Reality was picked up by my cable company this year, so I’ll be able to watch it, which is very cool.  If you didn’t previously have the channel in your cable line-up, it may have been added recently, as Fox Reality just cut deals with several of the big cable companies.

So…I’ll be back later to report anything interesting from the show.

Click on the jump to check out the highlights.  The interview with eliminated contestant Brandon Rogers is especially worthwhile. Continue reading ‘American Idol Extra Premiers Tonight’

Ryan introduces the judges, and after a little chat, last night’s clips .

Next up, the BEST GROUP SING EVAH.  Ryan says, “Before we start losing people, let’s hear them all together with a tribute to Diana Ross!”

OMG. This is what I’m talking about, baby. The kids do a medley of Supremes hits, Including “Stop! In the Name of Love” complete with the Patented Supremes Stop!11! Hand Gesture thingy–it makes the perfect Pointy, Pointy, Pointy Pose ending.

This group sing has everything.  Medley? Check. Bad choreography? Check. Contestants who look like they’d rather be anywhere else than singing lame Diana Ross songs? Check. The highlight: Extry “special” choreography–each girl sings to a boy while the boys mock-act a miffed reaction. That’s TeeVee gold, right there, babee.  Anyone who thinks this season is boring, well I cannot help you. I love American Idol. I love it So Damn Much. Continue reading ‘Top 12 Results’

Top 12 Performance

Hang on to your hat’s kids….

It’s DIANA ROSS week on American Idol.  Yes, the contestants get to choose from the fine oeuvre of MISS Diana Ross.

Will the kids pull it out, particularly the guys, or will we be treated to a massive trainwreck?  Stay tuned…

Recap to follow…

*******************

The show tonight starts off with more “Yeah, we’re awesome, we’re Idol, we’ve won stuff” footage. TPTB at American Idol will continue to toot their own horn.  By the time the big mid-season charity event rolls around, I predict the self-congratulation will become unbearable.

Tonight is the first performance night of the finals and the first week on the big stage.  Not to mention, the boys and girls are competing together for the first time. MISS Diana Ross is the guest “mentor” and she’s like a cogent Paula Abdul.  She actually has some useful suggestions for the singers, beyond being very positive and encouraging.  She’s still got the giant crazy hair-do, but she looks good without looking tucked and pulled.

Often, with a guest host, the theme isn’t centered around their music specifically. I think tonight would have served the entire cast better if the theme had been broader-say a “soul” or “Motown” night. But instead, we’ve got the songs of Miss Diana Ross.  For the R&B singers in the bunch, the theme is a snap.  For the others, it’s a challenge.  Some try to meet that challenge by modernizing the songs, or bringing their own sensibility to the music.  I find it ironic, that while the judges are constantly harping on originality and “making a song your own” they totally blast some of the contestants for attempting to change things up a bit.  Personally, as an Idol watcher who has lived through a Motown week year after year, I welcome the variety.  I don’t get it.  Make it your own, but don’t change it.  Be original, but don’t alter the originals.  Get your stories straight judges!  Anyway, I felt more than a little frustrated by the end of last night’s telecast.
