American Idol Extra Top 11 - Amanda Overmyer - Chris Richardson

AI Extra host JD Roberto talks to Amanda Overmyer minutes after she’s eliminated.  She says that she has nothing to bitch about.  She’s not the typical Idol contestant, and to have gotten as far as she did is a big deal.  She says she feels blessed to get as far as she did.

JD interviewed Chris Richardson from Season 6.   Chris did some recording in Miami.  He’s working on album and hopes to release it by the end of Summer 08, or at least by the end of 08.

There’s a vid of the Idols on the set of this week’s video. Michael Johns, Jason Castro and David Cook are roommates. So are Brooke White, Syesha Mercado, Kristy Lee Cook and Ramiele Malubay. Chickezie rooms with David Archuleta. Amanda Overmyer roomed with Carly Smithson.

Amanda is interviewed by JD Roberto:

  • She says she’s not disappointed
  • She doesn’t think she’s American Idol material
  • She’s happy she stuck to her guns performance-wise. Her goals were to get her face on TV and get her sound out there. She wanted to come out every single time and show viewers who she is musically.
  • She would have not sung a ballad next week, or ever. She felt that it’s important to stick to what your good at and where your strengths lie. You can’t be all things to all people.
  • She never thought she would win. She would have been happy coming in 8th.
  • American Idol is the only way she would have pursued music.
  • After Chris Daughtry’s success, she decided to give Idol a go.
  • She felt more comfortable performing to the crowds than performing to the cameras.

After the Jump: Part 1 and Part 2 of Amanda Overmyer’s exit interview.  Chris Richardson performs “All Alone”.

Chris Richardson and Melinda Doolittle to Host Dreyer’s Ice Cream Promotional Parties

Season 6’s Chris Richardson recently mentioned in a My Space bulletin that he and Melinda Doolittle had gone out to San Fransisco for a photo shoot for Dreyer’s Ice Cream.

Now it appears to be official–Chris and Melinda will be this year’s offishul spokespeople for the Dryer’s/Edy’s American Idol ice cream promotion. Check it OUT. And if you live on the East coast the company is called Edy’s.

My friend Schmanda called this one. Schmanda won an ice cream party at her house hosted by Season 5 7th place winner Ace Young. The contest was part of Dryer’s interactive American Idol promotion that featured a vote-off between ice cream flavors. Whee! Gotta love those tie-ins. ETA: OMG Check out the jingles for each Ice Cream flavor (under Flavor Performances).  I hope Chris and Melinda are being paid well. Heh.

Dreyer’s Promotional Idol CD in the Works?

I got a couple of interesting My Space Bulletins recently.  From Chris Richardson:

So I will be heading back into the studio the day after Thanksgiving to record for the album! Just got back from San Francisco where Melinda and I had a photo shoot for an ice cream company (Edy’s / Dreyers) They are putting together a promotional CD with one of my songs on it. Not exactly sure of the release yet, but will post.  I will keep you updated when more news comes…….Until then… yeahhh boiiiiiiii

From George Huff:

George’s new song “Here With Me” (from his upcoming release) will be on a special compilation cd of past American Idol contestants being put out by Edy’s Ice Cream. The special promotion will run February thru May 2008—with a free cd with the purchase of Edy’s Ice Cream.

Interesting!  I wonder who else besides Chris Richardson, Melinda Doolittle and George Huff are featured on the CD?

Season 6 Tour - Final thoughts on the Final show

I have a couple of remaining notes on the last two Idol concerts I attended in Manchester, NH. You can check out my videos from both shows (and all the other shows I attended) at GoFish. I’ve also put up a bunch of photos on my MySpace blog.

I’m posting Blake Lewis’s last performance of “You Give Love a Bad Name” ’cause it’s sweet. After Blake’s heartfelt thanks to the audience and a little shout out to his parents, you can hear his mom shout back “I love you too!”

Blake’s mom had made her way to the front of the stage to see Blake’s last performance. She was standing right next to us. I hear the venue security had given her a hard time where she was sitting originally, because she was standing out in the aisle. (!!!)

Venue security hassled me too. They almost threw me out. I was warned during intermission to stop taking video, or security would erase my video card. Ok, I’ll admit that I didn’t heed their warning, but what was really creepy–security came after me before the encore. They took my camera and pulled me out of the arena. From what I understood, they were taking their marching orders from Idol security, and from the sounds of it, they were watching me very closely–they even saw me sit down and change my video card! Can you say creepy?

Yoroshiku’s Recap - Manchester, NH 09/22

Yoro is a pal of mine from way back in season 3.  She and a couple other Season 3 pals were in NH with Sarah and I for Saturday’s concert.  Here is Yoro’s recap, I’m going to throw in a few of my pictures just for fun…

******

I admit, I wasn’t planning on going to the tour at all this year.  I was a yooge Blake fan during the season, but I was so wrapped up in work this summer that I didn’t have time to follow any of the news or gossip.  There was no way I could whip myself into the usual frenzy that I had for Elliott, Bo, JPL, etc., so my hometown show came and went without me.  I got a second chance with the Manchester show, in my *old* hometown, thanks to a pal of MJ’s.  HaremCon Jr. with schmanda and Snarkin was on!

I’m glad I did go, because it turned out to be a pretty excellent show overall.  Like MJ, I’m a fan of the whole Idol experience in general - the goofy group numbers and the interactions between the finalists are more interesting to me than any one contestant, ever.  So I liked that last year’s concept of mixing duets with the solo numbers was taken a step further this time.

Chris Richardson - Manchester, NH

I’ll be featuring the Idols in Manchester all week.  Over the weekend, expect a recap of both shows with pictures.  I’ll be linking to video along the way, but check my GoFish page frequently, I’ll be uploading all my videos in the next couple of days…

Here’s Chris Richardson performing “This Love” Saturday night in Manchester, NH

I chatted with Chris for a bit after the final show Sunday night.  I asked him what was next, and he told me that he’s recently been to New York, Miami and Nashville.  Specifically, he had meetings in New York, recording sessions in Miami, and meetings with songwriters in Nashville.  In the meantime, he’s writing songs for  Jordin Sparks, Haley Scarnato and Phil Stacey.  A song he co-wrote with Blake Lewis, “What You Got To Lose” (and sang background vocals) is slated to be Blakes first single from his upcoming album.  According to Blake, the single will be released October 31.

As far as his songwriting goes, he was pretty humble about it.  When I told him I was really interested to hear what all the fuss was about his songwriting (his fellow Idols can’t stop raving about his songwriting abilities).  He said, well the proof will be in the songs.

Chris has been a dynamic presence on this tour.  He shared the stage with nearly every Idol in duets and group numbers, and the genres covered ran the gamut from country (”What Hurts the Most” with Jordin Sparks) to rock (the Crazy/Hey Jude medley with the guys) to hip hop and R&B (funky medley with Blake Lewis included a beatbox contest between the two of them-fun).

While Chris was often compared to Justin Timberlake, he may be the Season 6 Idol who has more up his sleeve than we’ve seen so far.

Some recent interviews with Chris:  In this article with Reality Dish, Chris describes his musical style as “rock and soul.”  And here’s a long hometown interview with Hampton Roads, where he talks about his songwriting, and his friendship with the producer Timbaland.

Good Morning from Manchester!

Verizon Wireless Arena was nearly full last night as the Idols took the stage for the next-to-the-last time.  There was lots of heartfelt thanks to the audience for giving them the opportunity to tour, and in response the audience was wildly enthusiastic.  I think these last two show are going to be memorable for the Idols.  Manchester, NH has always loved the Idols.

Many family sightings in the audience last night:  Blake Lewis’ parents sat behind me.  Gina Glocksen’s mom and fiance were nearby.  Phil Stacey’s wife could be seen sitting inside the steel barrier in front of the stage.  During “I Need You” (his duet with Gina), Phil sang the song to his wife when he made his way to her side of the stage.  Melinda Doolittle’s mom was there.  I believe Chris Sligh’swife, Sarah was there, as was Sanjaya Malakar’s sister, Shyamali Malakar.

And get this–Tony Orlando was in the house!  Yes, Tony Orlando, from Tony Orlando and Dawn.  No I’m not kidding.  He was there with a young girl who was probably a daughter or granddaughter.  People were asking for his autograph during intermission.  Too funny.

I took video and pictures–as always, and I’ll have them up soon.  I’ll be attending the final show tonight, and it should be fun.  The Idols usually play many pranks on stage during the final show. I’ll no doubt have lots of great pictures and video, so stay tuned…

Blake Lewis announces on his my space that his album, titled “ADD (Audio Day Dream) drops November 27. (But Team Plaid spilled that bit of gossip for us last week…) Blake says, “Its a mix of all the great pop music that has inspired me since the 80’s. Electro/funk/soul/pop I call it my 2080’s album. DCD’s Memphis Season 6 Idols Tour Recap

9/13/07 Memphis, TN

So Koolmomma and I were on the fence about going to this show for a couple months…it was a busy time at work for the both of us..the concert fell on a school/work night and I was concerned about the expense between the kids starting school and 2 of my daughters having birthday’s back to back. Mom ran across great floor tickets for $20 each and we decided that was a sign…we had to go. Continue reading ‘DCD’s Memphis Season 6 Idols Tour Recap’

MJ’s Worcester, MA Recap

Group numbers!Yeah, yeah, I saw the Idols in Worcester last Wedndesday!

At the last minute I copped a ticket–fifth row, and I got lots of media. Unfortunately, the sound is kinda farked on the video, but I was upclose and I got some great screen grabs. Check out the Worcester collection on my My Space blog

A couple of weeks ago I hit the midwest to see a couple of shows. The arena in Cleveland was a little over half full, and the audience in Toronto was pretty dead. But Worcester? They love them some Idols here in New England. Not only was the arena fairly full, but the fans in the front rows were extremely enthusiastic. And the Idols seemed totally psyched, particularly since they had just received some bad news about tour receipts. Continue reading ‘MJ’s Worcester, MA Recap’

Season 6 Update

A few Season 6 tidbits:

Chris Sligh announced on his blog, that he’s signed with a management company:

As of today, I’ve officially signed with my management company, Blanton, Harrell, Cooke and Corzine.

Michael Blanton and Dan Harrell have managed both Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith since the beginning of their careers. The management firm now includes Jennifer Cooke & Chazz Corzine, who act as the personal managers to Amy & Smitty respectively. The firm now manages Point of Grace, Bebo Norman and Aaron Shust as well as some newer artists that will be announced shortly.

Congrats Chris!

In this interview Phil Stacey talks about his upcoming plans:

He is currently in negotiations with a record label in Nashville. His first CD, a country/gospel album, is due out next April.

And a bit of gossip about Blake Lewis and his upcoming record via reader Star and Team Plaid:

Here’s some Blake news from some people at the concert in Philly tonight that checked in at Team Plaid…they talked to Blake before the show and he told them his album will be released on 11/27. They also got some info from him about the first single:

He said it’s a reworked “Jealousy” called “What You Got to Lose,” cowritten with C Rich. He said it was James Brown meets Prince meets the California Tupac song.

“Jealousy” is one of Blake’s pre-Idol songs & it’s here. And the “California Tupac song” is “California Love” hee.

So, there you go! It looks like Blake’s first single will be called “What You Got to Lose,” co-written with Chris Richardson

Season 6 Idols: Update to the Update…

Season 6 Update!

I think it’s about time I post a Season 6 update! Here goes…

Jordin Sparks’ first single, “Tattoo,” from her upcoming album (due to be released November 20) was released last Monday. We’ll see how well the single is doing when the chart and sales numbers are released next week. A couple of days ago I was flipping by my local KISS station in the car, and there it was. You can listen to it here. It’s standard Top 40 fare. It’s certainly no earworm–the way Rihanna’s songs stick in your head, for instance (rella rella rella…ahhhhh….KILLMENOWPLEASE). But what do I know? The kids will prolly love it…

Stargate, the Swedish production team who helmed the production have produced hits for others, including Ne-yo, Rihanna and Elliott Yamin.Recent interviews in Entertainment Weekly and TV Guide with Blake Lewis are a fun read. Blake is refreshingly candid as he discusses the tour, his new-found fame (old ladies invade his space!) and his upcoming record ADD (Audio Day Dream), scheduled to be released at the end of the year. About the music on the album Blake says,

I feel that I have two singles already, maybe three. I definitely know which ones I want to come out first, but it’s all up to the powers that be. I’ve been working on music for a long time — I’d already started writing all this music a while ago.

Blake also says that, “Every single idea that I have for this project, the company is in love with.” Additionally, he’s videoing his studio sessions for a DVD that will be released at the same time as the record.

I am really intrigued by the fact that Chris Richardson’s Idol-mates cannot stop talking about what a great songwriter he is. He’s submitted songs for Jordin Sparks album that may very well make the cut, and he’s writing for/with Blake Lewis, Chris Sligh and Phil Stacey. Chris Rich talks about his songwriting in this TV Guide interview.

Phil Stacey and Melinda Doolittle will perform in Carnegie Hall this fall. They’ll take part in the 10th anniversary celebration of the Young People’s Chorus of New York City, along with the New York Pops, Rosanne Cash and others. Performing in Carnegie Hall should be a thrill for both of them.

Next on Melinda Doolittle’s plate, is a Christmas tour with Christian recording artist, Michael W. Smith (At one point, Jordin Sparks toured with Smith as a backup singer). The tour, titled “It’s a Wonderful Christmas” features songs from Smith’s upcoming Christmas album. It kicks off on November 29 and wraps up on December 22.

One of my favorites from this season, Chris Sligh has been busy writing music during his downtime on the tour. You can listen to some demos at his MySpace. My favorites are “Love is Raining Down” and “Something Beautiful.” The songs have awesome melodies and thoughtful lyrics. Chris will be signing with a Christian label once the tour is over. Go there now and listen! Good stuff.

BTW, christophro fan wrote to tell me that Terry Fator,  the winner of the Simon Cowell produced reality show, “America’s Got Talent” is Chris Sligh’s cousin.  But, I’m probably the last to know.  Terry is an amazing ventriloquist and besides winning 1 million dollars, he’s going on to headline in Las Vegas. Sweet.

Sanjaya Malakar’s family is selling the house he lived in before he made the American Idol cut. The entire family is moving to Hollywood. How about that?

Gina Glocksen’s best friend on tour is Haley Scarnato. In fact, Haley is going to be an attendant in Gina’s upcoming wedding to fiance Joe. Meanwhile, Haley may have to postpone her own wedding scheduled for January–the Idol tour has kept her too busy to do the necessary planning…

Finally, the Tour sponsors, Pop Tarts. have been posting webisodes of the Idols on tour. I just sat down and watched a bunch of them, and I have to say the kids are an engaging crew. Really. It’s a shame the producers didn’t allow us to see much of their personalities on the show. I can only hope that TPTB have learned their lesson…

And check out these kinda weird videos of the Idols presiding over the Nasdaq closing bell on Friday. Phil Stacey’s speech is a highlight! Check it out: Part1 and Part2. Rickey.org has some nice pictures here, here, here and here.

Rosalee’s Nassau Coliseum, LI NY, Idol Tour Recap

Well, it was a very long couple of days, BUT WORTH IT!!!!! Late Friday morning, my husband and I first stopped by the Garden City hotel, because the Idol Forums said that the Idols sometimes stay there. We saw one large bus and one long dark limo in the parking lot. We went inside, but it was empty and the people there looked like they were about to shoo us out if we lingered, so we left. We heard that the Idol crew stays at the Marriott next to the venue but decided not to try there because it was getting late. We still don’t know where they actually stayed this weekend. Chris Richardson MeadowlandsWell, my night seeing my favorite Chris R finally arrived last night and I must say my $220 ticket was worth it.. Like that commercial, idol tickets $220, parking $25, program $20, seeing Chris live while holding hands with my daughter and singing out loud to every song we knew..priceless.

To my surprise although my ticket said row L which I thought was 12th row turned out to be 6th row center because first row started with F and they skipped letter I! To the right of us was a mother with her daughter who looked to be in 20’s and her mom in her 40s.. and the left of us was a mom and dad with their two daughters, 10 and 12. We are so excited my daughter and I (daughter 30, me 53) that even though I knew Blake was coming up as the janitor I didn’t recognize him .He had a thick wig, buck teeth and mustache. Anyway, when he pulled everything off- whoa-…what a gorgeous guy!. All the idols looked like they were having a blast up on stage. Here’s what I remember of the night since all when blank when I saw Chris R smile and point at us… Continue reading ‘Ealbino’s Meadowlands, NJ Idols Tour Recap’

LB2’s Nassau Concert Recap

I’ve been meaning to write this sooner, but it’s my week off before classes start so the thought of opening Word or writing more than 5 words in an email was very daunting. But alas, here it is.

Now before I get into the actual concert, I need to explain a few things. First, I went with my sister to the concert and she was dreading every moment of it. She watched Idol out of obligation to a family that likes to bet on the show – she lost because she bet on Chris Richardson winning. She only chose him because she liked his bobble-headed moves to Geek in the Pink. Needless to say, she had some interesting comments to make during the show. I put in her edited version because some of her comments were really harsh and mean (really mean). The second thing is this is my first recap so apologies for its length (it’s long), content, etc.

Ok so here we go… Continue reading ‘LB2’s Nassau Colisseum Idol Tour Recap’

Nassau Colisseum Review - 8/24/07

I am not a writer nor do I pretend to be…  So why am I writing?  Well, I’ve enjoyed the various accounts I’ve read about the American idol tour so much, I feel it wouldn’t be fair if I didn’t at least try and share my experience.

I’ve watched American Idol for 5 seasons (missed season #1) and have really enjoyed the show.  It’s hard to say what my favorite season has been… personal highlights include… Kim Locke’s New York State of Mind, Fantasia’s Summertime, Constantine’s Bohemian Rhapsody, Elliott’s If I Can Dream… and many more…

One of my greatest pleasures in conjunction with American Idol is coffee klatch-ing about the show the morning after, at work … each friend and colleague passionately sharing reviews of their least and most favorite performers and performances…  For me, that recap is almost as good as the show… Continue reading ‘Sue’s Nassau Colisseum Idols’ Tour Recap’

MJ’s Toronto, ON Canada Idol Tour Recap

When we last met, I had just packed up my car, heading east from Cleveland towards Buffalo, NY…

Jordin and Melinda in TorontoOn to Toronto…

At some point, driving between Erie and Buffalo, my cell phone stops working. Eep.

There is traffic on the way, but much to my surprise the border crossing is a breeze.

I arrive in Toronto at about 2:30. It takes forever to find the hotel, park the car and get checked in. Toronto drivers are really, really rude. And I’m used to driving in Boston, home of the rudest drivers evah. Or so I thought. Also, a cop asks me to roll down my window. He then proceeds to lecture me about watching where I am going. Here’s this week’s and last week’s Idols Billboard Chart for you all.

Highlights:

  • Constantine Maroulis debuted on the Billboard Chart at #75 last week, and then dropped to #198 this week.  Unless his musical appearance on the big Bold and the Beautiful Boldface Challenge has some effect on sales this week.  So far, he’s sold 12,973 units so far.
  • Daughtry’s new single “Over You” debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 last week at #94.  It moves up to #75 this week, and is #39 on the Pop 100 and #25 on the Pop 100 Airplay.
  • This week, Kimberley Locke debuts a new song on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart.  “Band of Gold” enters the chart at #22.
  • Taylor Hicks’ “Heaven Knows” reaches its highest chart position on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart this week at #19.
  • Fantasia has a new single, “Only One U” and it debuted on the Hot Adult R&B Tracks and Airplay chat last week at #76 and #75 respectively.  It debuted on the Hot Adult R&B Airplay at #35.  This week it moves up the charts at #58, #58 and #30.

  • “Forever Cool” the latest CD in the celebrity-duets-with-a-dead-guy genre–that would be Dean Martin–debuts at #39 on the Billboard 200 this week.  Paris Bennett “duets” with Dean on one cut, “Baby-O” and you can listen to it here.  She sounds fantastic, but I can’t get passed the whole singing-with-a-dead-guy thing…

I spent today updating my Idol Appearances page.  If you know of an Idol appearance and would like to add it, email me at mjsbigblog@gmail.com. Thanks.
