Chris Sligh - Debut Album “Running Back To You” Drops May 6

Chris Sligh’s debut solo album, Running Back to You drops today…

And lucky me…I have an advance copy!

Chris Sligh was my favorite Season 6 male vocalist, so I’ve been eagerly awaiting his debut solo album “Running Back To You” from Brash records. I was a big fan of the record his band, Half Past Forever released last year, Take a Chance on Something Beautiful. Some of those songs are on the new album, and benefit from professional production.

The album has a Christian theme, but even this agnostic lapsed Catholic can identify with the themes of love and forgiveness found in the lyrics. The melodies are strong, which is usually the thing that compels me to listen to a record over and over again. The single, “Empty Me” is currently sitting on the Hot Christian Songs chart at #17 and the Christian Adult Contemporary chart at #18.

I’m going to do a track-by-track rundown…after the Jump…

Chris Sligh Releases CD “Running Back to You” May 6

Chris Sligh’s debut solo CD, “Running Back to You” drops on May 6. The album will be released by Brash records and produced by Brown Bannister (Amy Grant, MercyMe, Steven Curtis Chapman, The Afters), with guest co-production from musicians Will Owsley and Stephen Leiweke

The first single, “Empty Me” officially impacts Christian radio on the 22nd.

Chris will also be a guest commentator for Entertainment Weekly, along with Nadia Turner and Jon Peter Lewis.

Launching a promotional tour this week to support his first radio single, “Empty Me,” Sligh will hit markets including Dallas, Houston, Tulsa, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Orlando, and also kicks off the week as an official American Idol commentator for Entertainment Weekly online. Operating on a three week rotating schedule with our two other commentators (Jon Peter Lewis and Nadia Turner), Sligh will write commentaries through the lens of his experiences on American Idol; from comments about the singers, the judges, the set, and more, including any relatable anecdotes or stories from personal Idol experiences.

I’ll be picking up this CD went it drops. I’ve heard many of the songs when he played them live New Years Eve in Westerly, RI. Good stuff…

Listen to Chris Sligh’s Upcoming Single

Chris Sligh (Season 6) has just posted his upcoming single on his MySpace. It’s called “Empty Me” and will be released to the Christian radio market on February 22, although many stations will add it as early as February 15.

A bulletin sent from Chris’s My Space today:

My first single, all mixed, all mastered, all finished is up on my space! You, yes, you fair friends, can head to my page right now and listen to it. It will both rock your face off and melt your heart. As my page says, it is like psychotropic drugs while experiencing Chinese Water Torture…yes, it’s that good.

Anyway, before I overhype it, you should listen and form your own opinions of it. Hopefully there are good opinions.

Also, remember the album will be coming out May 6. This is a must have for your vinyl collection. Well, it won’t actually be coming out on vinyl. But it will be a good add to your collection of musical masterpieces, including, but not exclusive to: Milli Vanillii, Jump5, *Nsync, Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears and Hannah Montana. Don’t pretend like you’re not impressed.

Just buy the album.

But first listen to the single. You will not be disappointed. Unless you are.

Actually, I’d go with the “melt your heart” option.  “Empty Me” is a deeply-felt power ballad, about how fame can screw up your head if you don’t hang on to what’s real.  Chris sings like he means it. Definitely, Check it out

Chris Sligh - First Night in Westerly RI

I had one of the Best New Years Evah (well for me it doesn’t take much, I usually spend it hiding in my house….but still…)

I set out for Westerly RI on New Year’s Eve day to see Chris Sligh perform as the headline act for the Westerly, RI First night. And despite what TMZ said, it was pretty cool…

The set was generous. He mixed between song patter, covers, songs from his CD, Take A Chance on Something Beautiful and NEW songs that will appear on his upcoming CD, due to be released April 8th on Brash Records.

His new band including Adam, from Half Past Forever, had only rehearsed once prior to the event. They still managed to sound pretty tight.

(Chris has just posted a NEW promotional video, on You Tube. Check it out. It’s hilarious.)

As usual, I was there with my camera, and I captured some of the performances on my digital camera.

More Recap After the Jump….

Idol Billboard Update for Issue 12/15/07

Here is this week’s Idol Billboard Chart

Highlights:

  •  Kimberley Lock’s Christmas tune, “Frosty the Snowman”, shoots up to the #1 position on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart this week.  This is the third year in a row Kim has had a seasonal hit on the adult contemporary chart.  The dance club mix of “Band of Gold” is #5 on the Hot Dance Club Play chart.
  • Jordin Sparks drops down the Billboard 200–from 10-18.  She sold 51,084 albums this week for a total of 170,336.  Her single “Tattoo” is still inching it’s way up the charts.  It’s on the verge of entering the Billboard Hot 100 Top 10, at #11 this week.  What will probably be her next single, “No Air” with Chris Brown, has entered the Pop 100 at #97.  If her singles continue to do well, the album could continue to sell at a steady pace.
  • Carrie Underwood’s “Carnival Ride” drops a couple of notches, from 7-9.  The album sold 89,313 this week for a total of 1,162,350.  Expect that little black triangle to show up next to “Carnival Ride” any time now… While her single “So Small” sits at #1, again, on the Hot Country Songs chart, her next single, “All American Girl” enters the chart at #58.
  • Kellie Pickler’s “Small Town Girl” re-enters the Billboard 200 at #186. She sold 5,035 albums this week for a total of 664,633.
  • More Idol Christmas music on the charts: Elliott Yamin’s “This Christmas” debuts at #28 on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart. Mandisa’s duet with Michael W. Smith, “Christmas Day” debuts at #26 on the same chart.  Mandisa has another Christmas duet, with Matthew West called “Christmas Makes Me Cry”. It debuts on The Hot Christian Adult Contemporary and Hot Christian Songs charts at #18 and #24 respectively.

Chris Sligh BLOGS!

And the other Chris, Chris Sligh (and his wife, Sarah) moved to Franklin, TN. From his blog (pic with Kevin Max of dc talk):

Well, life has changed considerably. Sarah and I are in Nashville…well, Franklin…and enjoying life. We love our new house. We love our new neighborhood. We love our new life. It’s awesome.

Next week, I’m writing with a guy named Chris Eaton who has written number 1 hits on both the CCM side of things and the mainstream side of things. Wednesday I’m writing with Kevin Max. Over the next coupla weeks, I get to write with songwriting heroes like Tony Wood, Chris Rodriguez and many many more. It looks like we are going to be starting the album around November 1.

The record will have cross-over appeal, rather than just strictly Christian:

Season 6 Tour - Final thoughts on the Final show

I have a couple of remaining notes on the last two Idol concerts I attended in Manchester, NH. You can check out my videos from both shows (and all the other shows I attended) at GoFish. I’ve also put up a bunch of photos on my MySpace blog.

I’m posting Blake Lewis’s last performance of “You Give Love a Bad Name” ’cause it’s sweet. After Blake’s heartfelt thanks to the audience and a little shout out to his parents, you can hear his mom shout back “I love you too!”

Blake’s mom had made her way to the front of the stage to see Blake’s last performance. She was standing right next to us. I hear the venue security had given her a hard time where she was sitting originally, because she was standing out in the aisle. (!!!)

Venue security hassled me too. They almost threw me out. I was warned during intermission to stop taking video, or security would erase my video card. Ok, I’ll admit that I didn’t heed their warning, but what was really creepy–security came after me before the encore. They took my camera and pulled me out of the arena. From what I understood, they were taking their marching orders from Idol security, and from the sounds of it, they were watching me very closely–they even saw me sit down and change my video card! Can you say creepy?

Yoroshiku’s Recap - Manchester, NH 09/22

Yoro is a pal of mine from way back in season 3.  She and a couple other Season 3 pals were in NH with Sarah and I for Saturday’s concert.  Here is Yoro’s recap, I’m going to throw in a few of my pictures just for fun…

******

I admit, I wasn’t planning on going to the tour at all this year.  I was a yooge Blake fan during the season, but I was so wrapped up in work this summer that I didn’t have time to follow any of the news or gossip.  There was no way I could whip myself into the usual frenzy that I had for Elliott, Bo, JPL, etc., so my hometown show came and went without me.  I got a second chance with the Manchester show, in my *old* hometown, thanks to a pal of MJ’s.  HaremCon Jr. with schmanda and Snarkin was on!

I’m glad I did go, because it turned out to be a pretty excellent show overall.  Like MJ, I’m a fan of the whole Idol experience in general - the goofy group numbers and the interactions between the finalists are more interesting to me than any one contestant, ever.  So I liked that last year’s concept of mixing duets with the solo numbers was taken a step further this time.

Chris Sligh - Manchester, NH

Watch Chris Sligh perform Mute Math’s “Typical” Sunday night in Manchester, NH:

What’s next for Chris Sligh?  The answer can be found in a recent post on his blog.  Some excerpts:

Right now, I have deal on the table from an indie label that is a 50-50 deal. I’m also looking into starting my own label with major distribution where my cut would obviously be even higher. I also have deals from major labels that are in the works…the question is what’s the best option.

And:

I have the labels still interested. I have indie labels interested. But I might have the possibility to do things a little differently. We’re looking at possibly doing a direct deal with a retail chain that would be exclusive for a short amount of time (3-6 months). The albums would have a very low price point (like $6.99), so I would make similar money to a label deal, but it would help move units. We would do a large amount of albums non-returnable (this is important) to the retail chain and really push to that chain (playing the album in the store, doing in-store appearances, albums by the registers, etc.) At the end of the exclusivity period we would take the album to every retail chain, via major distribution, a la Elliot Yamin. We will have already sold a large amount of albums (the numbers we’re looking at now are between 1-200,000) with the exclusive deal. This whole time, we would be working to radio, since ultimately singles will sell the record. However, as we go to distribution, we would still keep the price point low (maybe $7.99).

The goal through this is not necessarily to sell records (thought that is how the endgame happens)…it’s to put music in people’s hands to push them to buy concert tickets. The focus would be touring. I am a touring musician. I hope to play 200-250 shows a year over the next few years. Radio is important to moving records. But I think that touring is what will allow me to have a career.

Chris explained it to me just like that at the after party Sunday night.  So glad he’s got a blog–I don’t have to re-explain it, thus sparing what few brain cells I have left…heh.

No doubt, all of this year’s Idols are entering a music industry that’s currently very volatile and in an extreme state of flux.  I don’t doubt that some of them will ink unusual deals outside of the typical label contract.

One last thing.  Regular readers know that I have been a Chris Sligh fan since I found his My Space back when I leaked some spoilers last December. I stayed a fan once the competition started.  Even after “Endless Love” one might ask?  Of course.  I loved the way Chris reworked that song and STILL maintain it was a great vocal performance.  The iTunes recording is even better.  So, there

Anyway. I think Chris continued to bring it on tour.  Working the big arena stage has definitely helped his stage presence–as has Phil Stacey, who reportedly gave him performance tips.  (Chris told me Phil would talk to him honestly off stage, “Dude, no….” Heh.

Best of luck Chris, and thanks for everything.  You know what I mean.

Good Morning from Manchester!

Verizon Wireless Arena was nearly full last night as the Idols took the stage for the next-to-the-last time.  There was lots of heartfelt thanks to the audience for giving them the opportunity to tour, and in response the audience was wildly enthusiastic.  I think these last two show are going to be memorable for the Idols.  Manchester, NH has always loved the Idols.

Many family sightings in the audience last night:  Blake Lewis’ parents sat behind me.  Gina Glocksen’s mom and fiance were nearby.  Phil Stacey’s wife could be seen sitting inside the steel barrier in front of the stage.  During “I Need You” (his duet with Gina), Phil sang the song to his wife when he made his way to her side of the stage.  Melinda Doolittle’s mom was there.  I believe Chris Sligh’swife, Sarah was there, as was Sanjaya Malakar’s sister, Shyamali Malakar.

And get this–Tony Orlando was in the house!  Yes, Tony Orlando, from Tony Orlando and Dawn.  No I’m not kidding.  He was there with a young girl who was probably a daughter or granddaughter.  People were asking for his autograph during intermission.  Too funny.

I took video and pictures–as always, and I’ll have them up soon.  I’ll be attending the final show tonight, and it should be fun.  The Idols usually play many pranks on stage during the final show. I’ll no doubt have lots of great pictures and video, so stay tuned…
