Fox Reality’s American Idol Extra debuted tonight on Fox Reality, and I’m watching it right now. The Extra cameras were filming David Hernandez as he said goodbye to the judges and castmates . Syesha Mercado was crying. All three judges hugged David, and Simon Cowell talked to him for a bit. David said that Simon thought maybe he was down because of last week’s media scandal (News of David’s history as a stripper in a gay nightclub was posted on nearly every media site).
David said he wasn’t down, but that the song choice, “I Saw Her Standing There” wasn’t his first. He wanted to sing “Let it Be”. Numbers were pulled out of a hat, and he lost. “The song I got stuck with,” he said, “Wasn’t one of my personal favorites, but I tried to make the song my own. Obviously it didn’t work out too well.”
David says he’s got some offers already. He’s upbeat and looks forward to the future.
Sanjaya Malaker is on the show, and he says he would have chosen “Michelle” if Season 6 had done a Beatles’ theme. He’s working on an album right now.
Melinda Doolittle was also interviewed, and she’s also working on a CD. “Slated to come out in June,” she says. She wrote a song with Jonny Lang. She says the album will be “a little rock grit with some funk and some soul.”
Simon Cowell thinks that David looked “Defeated…haunted.” Simon thinks the scandal got to him.
Gina Glocksen and Constantine Maroulis are co-hosts. Watching them read lame crap off of cue cards is pretty funny.
Amanda Overmyer’s song choice was also her second choice. But she says, “it ended up working out for me, and that it was the song out of all of them I should have picked anyways.”
Jason Castro related very much to the song he sang this week. He says that right now, he’s “On the verge” with someone…
David Hernandez wanted to sing “Yesterday” next week.

The show tonight opens with cross promotion: Horton’s little Whos sit in front of the television, anticipating the start of American Idol. Just like the rest of us.
You did it America. Over 29 million votes Tuesday night. And it’s finally happening. Season 7 is out pacing Season 6 in vote totals. Last season’s Top 12 garnered 28 million votes. I’m not surprised. I expect to see the same kind of turn-about in the ratings as the buzz for this season continues to grow.

She’s got more here.
Let me say, right off the bat, that I love the Beatles. I’ve been a fan since I was 5 years old. As far as I’m concerned, pop music begins and ends with Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr. As you might imagine, I anticipated this week’s Beatles theme with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. I love these songs, I love hearing them, but not so much when they’re butchered. And as Idol fans are aware, anything can happen on the big Idol stage.
Happily, the kids are alright. Beatles night is NOT a trainwreck as some have predicted. There are several fine performances and a few surprises.
Most wonderfully, it appears that we have a REAL race on our hands. Front-runners suddenly seem fallible, and contestants who’d been counted out are back in the race.
This is really good stuff.

Here’s your Top 12. Are these kids the best evah? Show mouthpieces keep saying it over and over again, as if saying it will make it true. I think we’re off to a good start, with break-out performances already from David Archuleta, David Cook and Jason Castro. However, it still remains to be seen if this crew will deliver once they hit the big stage this week.
Some interesting factoids:
Seven of the 8 teenagers who comprised the Top 24 were eliminated during the semi-finals. Two 25 year-olds, a 26, 28 and 29 year old round out the ages of the rest of the eliminates. Ten of the Top 12 contestants ages run between 20-25. The cast is bookended by a 17 and 29 year old. Roughly, the youngest and oldest contestants of the original Top 24 were eliminated during the semi-finals.
Past season have traditionally had a heavy representation of contestants from the Southeast. This year, the South is represented by 2 Floridians, and a contestant who claims part-time residency in Georgia. There are 6 West-coasters, including contestants from Arizona and Utah. Two contestants hail from the central South–Texas and Oklahoma. And, there is one Midwesterner, from Indiana.

A little news–On Wednesday’s results show, Ruben Studdard will be the guest performer. He’ll be singing the new boot song, “Celebrate me Home.” Next week, Katharine McPhee performs with David Foster.
This week, the Idols take on the Beatles’ song book. I’m simultaneously excited and horrified. As a Beatles freak I look forward to hearing these great songs performed–but performed well. And as we know, anything can happen on the Idol stage. I remain cautiously optimistic…
Check out my song picks for the Idols after the jump. What are yours? Share in comments! Remember, only Lennon/McCartney songs count. George Harrison wrote many incredible songs recorded by the Beatles (”Something”, “Here Comes the Sun”). Lucky for George, Michael Jackson/Sony ATV never got their grubby little hands on his songs…
ETA: Looks like I’m going to have to revise my list:
Here is what Nigel Had to Say about Beatles week:
Now that the Idol finally has use of the entire songbook — which includes 180 tunes — Lythgoe knows just when to use them.
“When the Top 12 sing for the first time this season, it will be the music of Lennon and McCartney,” he told Seacrest. “We’ve given them a list because it’s all of the early songs — from ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand’ to ‘Got to Get You Into My Life.’ These fantastic songs. It’s one of the few areas that everybody knows.”
The list ends with Revolver–nothing from Sgt Pepper onnward…
My favorite period is the middle period–Beatles for Sale through Revolver.
