Jason Castro Exit Interviews

For those of you who were wondering: Jason Castro did NOT forget his words on purpose Tuesday night. In fact, the idea that he was ready to go home didn’t really hit Jason until he was standing on the stage with Syesha Mercado. Although he was dreading having to learn 3 songs for the coming week, he was looking forward to a hometown trip. Jason insists he never threw in the towel–he always tried his best, he says. Also, he claims that he mouthed “Vote, vote” to the camera after Ryan gave his numbers–not “Don’t Vote” as some conspiracy theorists have claimed.

Here’s what Jason had to say to Jessica Shaw from Entertainment Weekly who quoted Jason admitting that he wanted to go home:

The fact of the matter that day was I was in a bad mood. I was frustrated with a lot of things. Then I got on the phone with you. I was just not in a good mood. I couldn’t find a quiet place to talk to you and I kept walking around. I couldn’t focus while we were talking. I don’t even remember much of what I said. There are some days that are just like that. You just don’t want to do what you are doing.

Next week, for his personal song choice, he was deciding between “Blue Eyes” by the Carey Brothers and “Green Eyes” by Coldplay.

Is Jason Castro Ready to Go Home?

ETA: The quotes from this post were taken from a larger articleabout how the Top 5 chose their songs. Jason’s section of the article describes him vacillating about his song choice–first he’s confident about his choice, and then he’s not. The article demonstrates that the contestants’ experience is like a roller coaster ride–one minute they are up the next down. But the little teaser used the most sensational quotes–to get our attention. It worked, didn’t it?

From Entertainment Weekly

He made it through Paulagate 2008, but is American Idol’s Jason Castro ready to call it quits? EW’s Jessica Shaw was on the scene as the Idols rehearsed for Neil Diamond week (read her “Why Song Selection Matters” feature in the issue out Friday) and spoke with Castro on Monday afternoon: “I’ll get around to practicing,” he promised her, after noting that his brother and a friend had visited over the weekend and that his Saturday meeting with Diamond had gone “really bad” because he didn’t yet know his songs. “What happens happens. I’ll sing and if people like it, they like it. And if they don’t, they don’t. I’m kind of ready to go home.”

You’re kind of ready to walk off America’s biggest stage???

“It’s been overwhelming,” Castro continued. “I got 150 balloons yesterday delivered to the studio because people heard I was sick last week. That’s cool, but that’s just weird.”

You know, this is a very short article, with quotes that could very well be taken out of context. By the same token, the EW reporters have no reason to make up quotes. I don’t think a conspiracy is at work here.

I’m putting this in a separate thread so you guys can discuss it. PLEASE remember to follow the guidelines of the blog. Respect your fellow poster’s opinions…

Paula Abdul Owes Jason Castro an Apology

Check out Paula Abdul’s big-time excuse making on this morning’s Ryan Seacrest show. You can read a transcript of her interview at Entertainment Weekly. She claims that she and the judges only found out about the show setup–that the critiques would wait until after the second round–when Ryan announced it at the top of the show. Geez, the judges should start reading my blog. I knew it at 6:30 ET. Our weekly rehearsal reporter, Caffiend, told me on the phone after she left the CBS studios. I posted that bit of info on the blog. Meanwhile, Paula claims she was in the studio with her family for part of the dress rehearsal.

She also keeps insisting that she mixed up Jason’s Castro’s review with David Cook’s, and that she read “second song” off her notes due to the confusion caused when head of Reality Programming, Mike Darnell, supposedly ordered Nigel Lythgoe, at the last minute, to march the contestants out on stage for an impromptu post-first round critique.

Chikezie is Eliminated Tonight…

In the Bottom 3

  • Chikezie
  • Syesha Mercado
  • Jason Castro

VIDEOS:

thanks lawrence, for the videos…

I have to hand it to Chikezie, he clawed his way into the Top 12 and fought to stick around til the Top 10. But, he was living on borrowed time.  The crazy upbeat deal wasn’t going keep him in the game week after week, and as we saw tonight, ballads are deadly to poor Chikezie.  Ballads are boring, indeed.

The Top 10 elimination–not a night of surprises.

thanks lawrence for the video

Season 7 Top 10 is a total rock-fest, with Michael Johns and David Cook turning in energetic, passionate performances.  Clearly the best of the night.  Michael puts himself back in the game, at last, and David  truly turns into the Dark Horse who could possibly sneak up past ‘lil David Archuleta to take it all.

The Idols sing songs from the year they were born.  Y’all ready for another 80’s night? Eight of the remaining contestants were born in the 80’s (with Michael Johns and David Archuleta bookending the crew on the cusp, 1979 and 1990 respectively).  The pool of songs looks similar to 80’s week from Top 20. At least it’s not the Beatles, again. Thank Jeebus.

Tonight’s pre-performance video packages feature the kids when they really were kids.  Awww. So cute.

New Idol performances will be introduced to the iTunes collection in a few days. Before that happens, I thought we could take a look at the Top 10 performances as they stand today. Brooke White is at the Top of the list, with David Archuleta right behind her at #2 and #3. David Cook holds 3 spots in the Top 10. Carly Smithson rounds out the list at #8 and #9.

Bonus: Notice Katharine McPhee’s “Over It” in the mix. A nice bounce from her appearance last week.

Amanda Overmyer is eliminated

Bottom 3

  • Carly Smithson
  • Kristy Lee Cook
  • Amanda Overmyer

Video

Thanks, Lawrence, for the video!

Amanda Overmyer–Eliminated tonight.  Damn.  I think she did herself no favors when she declared Tuesday night that “Ballads are boring” and seemed to be sneering at Simon’s advice.  Appearing early in the show, with a middling performance didn’t help her either.  I think Amanda was somebody you either loved or hated.  Her tough biker-chick persona is not for everyone.  But, that’s exactly why I liked her.  The white chicks on Idol tend to be these pretty little pony princess types.  Amanda is certainly not that.  Although she’s not as versatile as some of her castmates–her vocal ability was limited to blues rock–I think she would have added something different to the tour.

I admired Amanda’s aloof, don’t-mess-with-me attitude, but I can see how that might not be the best strategy for encouraging viewers’ votes.

Here’s the recap:

Hey, the results are in and someone’s number is up! But not before Ryan reveals the “mentors” for this season.  There are only 4.  I was kinda hoping for 0, especially after hearing the list: Dolly Parton, Mariah Carey, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Neil Diamond.

Top 11 - Performance Recap

Videos! Click the song links! (thanks Lawrence, for the video!)

Ryan Seacrest opens the show, standing in one of the space-age balcony thingies, high atop the set, “Tonight, by popular demand, the #1 show in the country,  celebrates the #1 band of all time…”

*eyes roll*

Seriously, the Beatles two weeks in a row?  What’s the point?  The kids did a really good job last week with the Lennon/McCartney songbook, why push it?  And push it, indeed they did.  I’m hearing the kids were working on another theme (birth year) when TPTB in their infinite wisdom, decided to change themes.  The kids had to scramble to pick new songs.  That bit of chaos shows in tonight’s performances.

It kind of sucks that the kids were forced on a mad dash Top 11 week.  This week’s performances are important.  The contestants who make the cut make the summer tour where they finally have the opportunity to make some real money.  It’s not only the money, but the additional exposure they can add to their resume.  The heat is definitely on.

Randy Jackson takes as many opportunities as he can to pimp his record with Paula Abdul, “Dance Like There’s no Tomorrow”.  Paula expands her vocabulary! She says the kids who had “gumption” will continue to take risks.  And, who pissed in Simon Cowell’s cornflakes? Just a question.  You’d think he would have perked up after Kristy Lee Cook offered him a blow job. But, noooo.  Seriously,  There’s some very interesting back-talk to the judges this week.

Top 11 Spoilers!

Super-duper-awesome gal on the scene, Caffiend, attended the Top 11 Performance rehersal tonight! She got us some song spoilers!

This is the order, more or less. There might be a few I’ll need to switch in the middle. She says the show was “fabulous” tonight. Everyone was really good. Syesha was the weakest. If she goes this week, we’ll have a fantastic Top 10, she says.

Thanks for the scoop, Caffiend!

  • Amanda Overmyer - “Back in the Ussr”
  • Kristy Lee Cook - “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away” - Surprisingly good.
  • David Archuleta - “Long and Winding Road” - Mocked himself a little in his video.
  • Michael Johns - “A Day in the Life” -  Fabulous, changed it up a bit.
  • David Cook - “Day Tripper” - Peter Frampton style with Vox box
  • Brooke White - “Here Comes the Sun”  No piano or guitar - Danced a little. Really good.
  • Carly Smithson - “Blackbird” - “Blew me away.”  Nailed it–tears.
  • Jason Castro - “Michelle” - Beautiful.  No guitar.  Great audience interaction.
  •  Syesha Mercado - “Yesterday” - Overdid it.
  • Chikezie - “I’ve Just Seen A Face” - Changed it up again. Pulled out a harmonica.
  • Ramiele Malubay - “I Should Have Known Better”

A little More About What Simon Said on Oprah Winfrey

During yesterday’s appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show, when asked who he thought the front-runners in the competition currently were, Simon Cowell said that while he believes David Archuleta is the front-runner, don’t rule out Brooke White, David Cook and Jason Castro. He thinks any one of these contestants could win.

Astute peeps in comments pointed to the fact that those very contestants occupy the top spots on iTunes.  There is no official ranking.  TPTB  and iTunes are withholding sales information during the competition.  However,  if you do a search on American Idol Performance and then sort them by Popularity, you can see how the Idols roughly stack up against each other.  Do a search on American Idol, and pick out the relevant items.  Carly Smithson and Michael Johns, early favorites, appear to have fallen closer to the middle of the pack.  So much for plants.

ETA: Thanks for setting me straight, comments peeps!  Tricksey, TPTB!!! Here is a crudely put together look at the Top 10:

Idol Top 11 - Beatles Dos

The kids perform the Lennon/McCartney song book this week. Again. Too much of a good thing? Perhaps. Last week’s show exceeded expectations. The kids rose to the challenge, offering a mostly entertaining 2 hours of television. The songbook is vast–there should be no problem coming up with 12 more great songs. But…eh. The bloom is off the rose a bit, no?

An FYI. Starting with the Top 12, the iTunes downloads are studio recordings, rather than live performances. My favorites from last week: “Across the Universe” Micheal Johns - I was in the minority, I loved his performance. The studio recording is even better. “If I Fell” Jason Castro - I thought his performance was slight, but the recording mixes his vocals up front and center, highlighting his lovely phrasing. “Let it Be” Brooke White - Just as pretty and heartfelt as her performance. I’ve got links to all the audio and video available at iTunes here (and if you are planning to download, please support the site and click either the text links or iTunes banners. thnx!)

My half-hearted Top11 list is after the jump. Since there were songs from the post ‘66 songbook last week, I’m considering the entire catalog here.
