Idol Bits and Pieces - Theme for the Top 10 - Songs the Year They Were Born

Next week’s theme has been confirmed. The Top 10 Idols will perform songs from the year they were born. I believe this was the theme they were working on last week before TPTB decided that America needed MORE Beatles, dang it. And it turned out we really didn’t!

Season 2’s Kimberley Locke will be the music guest for the Top 10 Results show.

Also, Ellen DeGeneres will once again co-host Idol Gives Back with Ryan Seacrest when the show airs during Top 8 week on April 9. Musical guests include, Maroon 5, Heart, Gloria Estefan, Boyz II Men, The Clark Brothers, Carrie Underwood, Daughtry, John Legend and Snoop Dogg. Bono, Brad Pitt, Reese Witherspoon and Eli Manning will also appear.

Idol Bits and Pieces - Kellie Pickler Performs on Idol This Wednesday

The Idol folks are wisely bringing back former Idols to perform on the big stage during the Results show this season. This Wednesday’s Top 11 Results Show will feature Kellie Pickler. Next week for the Top 10, Season 2’s Kimberley Locke returns to perform her new single “Fall”.

Check your DVRs! The big Idol Gives Back special on Wednesday April 9th, will run for 2 1/2 hours and will begin 30 minutes before prime-time, at 7:30 ET. Better to disrupt Simpson’s reruns than the FOX affiliates newscasts at 10 pm, I suppose.

Speaking of Idol Gives Back, The Clark Brothers, the winners of last Fall’s Next Great American Band, are scheduled to perform for the big fundraiser. What? You say you didn’t watch Next Great American Band? You and 99.9% of the population. The better the surprise will be, then. The Clark Brothers are incredible singer/musicians. I’m happy that they will finally be exposed to a big audience. Folks will be blown away.

I’ve been hearing that Austin Clark will be on hand for this week’s performance show. He’ll be playing dobro for one of the contestants. Watch for that!

ETA: Tonight’s show is another 2-hour extravaganza.  Next week, the performance show cuts back to 90 minutes.

This Week’s Idol Appearances

ETA: By popular demand (chat peeps!) watch Britney Spears sleep-walk through her VMA performance…

I thought I’d devote a post to upcoming Idol appearances that I lovingly gather in one place right here.  If I’ve missed something, shoot me an email at mjsbigblog@gmail.com

  • The MTV Video Music Awards are on TONIGHT, and I don’t know about you, but I’m tuning in for the Brit-brit crash-and-burn that promises to open the show.  Heh.  Idols will be there, supporting the Britney side show. Jennifer Hudson presents an award, while both Daughtry and Carrie Underwood are nominated for awards.  Tune in tonight at 9 pm EDT on MTV.
  • Monday, Kimberley Locke performs at the 16th Annual Ella Awards honoring Gladys Knight in Beverly Hills.
  • Chris Daughtry and his band Daughtry have some TV appearances this week: On Wednesday they appear on the CBS Early Show and then later that night on the Late Show with David Letterman. On Thursday, they appear on Live with Regis and Kelly.  Get your DVRs ready!
  • Opening Thursday: Jon Peter Lewis plays Jesus in the Redlands Civic Light Opera production of the musical “Godspell”.  (The production answers the hypothetical question: What if Jesus were a Hobbit? Heh.)
  • Friday,  Diana DeGarmo appears at the Otis Redding Tribute in Macon, GA 8 pm.
  • Saturday, Kimberley Locke appears at the Savannah Pride celebration in Savannah, GA.  George Huff appears at the Brilliant Embers Fall 2007 Concert in Anaheim, CA. 5:30 pm.  (that’s quite the juxtaposition…) Elliott Yamin appears in London, UK on behalf of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Kelly Clarkson appears on a repeat of the CMT special CMT Crossroads: Kelly Clarkson and Reba McEntire. 3 pm and 11 pm.  Finally, Taylor Hicks performs during halftime with the Auburn University Marching band at the Auburn-Miss football game at Auburn University. Taylor attended Auburn before he quit to pursue a music career full time.

Billboard Update: Issue 9/15/07

Here is this week’s Idol Billboard Update. Just for You!

Highlights:

  • Jordin Sparks’ debut single off her forthcoming album (due to be released November 20), “Tattoo” debuts on the Pop 100 at #88 and the Pop 100 Airplay at #48.
  • Carrie Underwood’s new single “So Small” shoots up the Billboard 100 from #93 to #17, thanks to the digital single being released on iTunes last week.  Some interesting information via Fred Bronson’s Billboard Chartbeat column: “One effect of Garth Brooks’ receiving so much airplay this week is that other artists received fewer spins than they would have if radio wasn’t devoting so much time to “More Than a Memory.” That helps explain why Carrie Underwood’s “So Small” (Arista) dips 11-13 in its fifth chart week on Hot Country Songs. The track should rebound, but meanwhile the availability of a digital single sends “So Small” soaring up the Hot 100, with a move of 93-17. That’s the second biggest jump on this chart in 2007, topped only by the 94-3 rocket ride of Beyonce and Shakira’s “Beautiful Liar” the week of April 7.” “So Small” debuts on the Pop 100 at #23, and the Hot Digital Songs at #6.
  • Kimberley Locke’s “Band of Gold” moves up from #20 to #19 on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart.  She’ll be featured on the Dave Koz and friends Christmas Tour starting on November 26 in Baltimore MD.
  • Not on the chart–YET: From Bo Bice’s My Space, “Bo Bice’s new record “See the Light”, due out October 23 as the first release from his newly formed $ugarmoney/StratArt Records, teamed Bo up with producer Frank Liddell. The result is a fresh and soulful take on Bo’s Southern Rock roots; it’s the album he was born to make!”

Billboard Update - 09/01/07

Here’s this week’s and last week’s Idols Billboard Chart for you all.

Highlights:

  • Constantine Maroulis debuted on the Billboard Chart at #75 last week, and then dropped to #198 this week.  Unless his musical appearance on the big Bold and the Beautiful Boldface Challenge has some effect on sales this week.  So far, he’s sold 12,973 units so far.
  • Daughtry’s new single “Over You” debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 last week at #94.  It moves up to #75 this week, and is #39 on the Pop 100 and #25 on the Pop 100 Airplay.
  • This week, Kimberley Locke debuts a new song on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart.  “Band of Gold” enters the chart at #22.
  • Taylor Hicks’ “Heaven Knows” reaches its highest chart position on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart this week at #19.
  • Fantasia has a new single, “Only One U” and it debuted on the Hot Adult R&B Tracks and Airplay chat last week at #76 and #75 respectively.  It debuted on the Hot Adult R&B Airplay at #35.  This week it moves up the charts at #58, #58 and #30.
  • Carrie Underwood’s new single “So Small” from her upcoming album debuts on the Billboard Hot 100 this week at #98.  She moves from #17 to #15 on the Hot Country Songs chart.  She also debuts this week on the Canadian Hot 100 at #14.
  • “Forever Cool” the latest CD in the celebrity-duets-with-a-dead-guy genre–that would be Dean Martin–debuts at #39 on the Billboard 200 this week.  Paris Bennett “duets” with Dean on one cut, “Baby-O” and you can listen to it here.  She sounds fantastic, but I can’t get passed the whole singing-with-a-dead-guy thing…

I spent today updating my Idol Appearances page.  If you know of an Idol appearance and would like to add it, email me at mjsbigblog@gmail.com. Thanks.

This week’s Idol Billboard Update right here.  Play along.

The Highlights:

  • The highest charting Idol on the Billboard 200 this week is Daughtry at #17.  All the Idols on the Billboard 200 took a hit this week. Daughtry’s sales numbers decreased 33% from last week.
  • Fantasia is the first Idol to reach #1 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.  “When I See U” is the 128th #1 for the American Idol franchise.
  • Elliott Yamin’s “Wait For You” from his self-titled debut is a bonafide hit, and it continues to climb the charts this week: From #28 to #25 on the Billboard Hot 100, #45 to #33 on the Hot 100 Airplay, from #16 to #14 on the Pop 100, it stays steady at #12 on the Pop 100 Airplay, from #40 to #39 on the Hot Adult Top 40, from #24 to #21 on the Hot Digital Tracks and from #29 to #24 on the Hot Digital Songs.  WHEW.

  • Daughtry’s “Home” keeps its #1 position for the 4th week on the Hot Adult Top 40 chart.
  • Kimberley Locke’s “Change” climbs to the #6 spot on the Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart.  Unfortunately, the album “Based on a True Story” has sold only 12,000 units.

This week’s Idol Billboard update–right here.

The Highlights:

  • Kimberly Locke’s new album “Based on a True Story” debut’s on the Billboard 200 this week at #160.  Not so great considering her single, “Change” is #10 on the Hot Adult Contemporary Songs chart.  She sold 4,842 units this week.
  • The soundtrack to Dreamgirls, featuring Jennifer Hudson jumped from #125 to #44 on the Billboard 200 this week.  It also jumped from #42 to #15 on the Top R7B Albums chart, and from #5 to #3 on the Top Soundtracks chart.  The movie Dreamgirls was recently released on DVD.
  • Fantasia’s single, “When I See U” continues to climb up the chart: From #75 to #69 on the Billboard Hot 100, from #48 to #42 on the Hot 100 airplay, from #14 to #13 on the Hot R&B Singles & Tracks and Airplay charts and from #10 to #9 on the Hot Adult R&B Airplay chart.
  • Bucky Covington’s single, “A Different World” is #19 on the Hot Singles and Tracks chart, making it a Top 20 country hit.
  • Another Season 5 contestant, Elliott Yamin’s single “Wait for You” re-enters the Billboard Hot 100 at #100.  It climbs from #68 to #60 on the Pop 100 chart, and from #35 to #33 on the Pop 100 Airplay chart.  His appearance on the Final 3 results show Wednesday should give Elliott a nice spike for both his album and single.
  • I didn’t mention it last week, but Carrie Underwood’s, “I’ll Stand By You” from the Idol Gives Back show is the first iTunes exclusive track to debut on the Billboard 100.  It debuted at #6 last week and hangs on to the #6 position this week.
  • Talking about spikes, Kelly Clarkson is scheduled to perform on the big finale next week.  I’m sure she’ll sing her single, “Never Again”–her appearance should reverse the bit of ground the single lost on the charts this week.  Also, there is good news for peeps waiting for her album “My December” to drop.  The release date has been moved from July to June 26…
  • The big Idol winner this week is not an Idol.  Bon Jovi has multiple tracks on the charts this week after their appearance on Idol last week.  “Wanted Dead or Alive,” “You Give Love a Bad Name,” “Livin’ on a Prayer,” “Blaze of Glory,” “It’s My Life” and “This Ain’t a Love Song” all entered the Hot Digital Songs chart. “You Give Love a Bad Name,” “Livin’ on a Prayer” and “Blaze of Glory,” entered the Hot Digital Tracks chart.  Bon Jovi’s “Have a Nice Day” reentered the Hot Digital Songs and Hot Digital Tracks charts at #46 and #47 respectively.   Finally, the album “Have a Nice Day” re-entered the Billboard 200 at #113. Whew.

Good news from Variety about The Color Purple’s first week sales numbers with Fantasia in the cast:

American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino’s first week in the starring role of “Purple” shot weekly sales for the Broadway tuner up by a staggering $366,598 to $1,183,722. The take reps the musical’s highest tally ever for an eight-perf week.

VH1’s Celebrity Fit Club, which features Kimberley Locke will premier this Sunday at 9 pm.

And, oddly, Paris Bennett has joined Vote for the Worst in their quest to make Sanjaya Malakar the new American Idol.  Paris says, she “and a few other contestants” are using the Web site to “screw with the results.”  “We want to see him [Sanjaya] win because it’ll kind of prove that ‘American Idol’ is kind of losing its taste….it kinda isn’t going for talent anymore and more for popularity.”   Paris, Paris Paris, what makes you think Idol has ever been anything but a popularity contest?

Akon is on a Hit List and Idol Alum Camp Counselors Announced

In Wednesday’s recap of the Top 8 results show, I wondered why a pre-recorded performance of Akon singing his hit “Don’t Matter” was inexplicably part of the show. me: except Ryan did mention it right before Akon’s appearance.  Bad me, I missed it FFing through the boring Farmers Market segment.  Ryan says the top 50 is culled from all the Billboard charts. Thanks Sarah.

Here is the reason. Akon’s performance is part of a new americanidol.com website feature called The Hit List.  Fans who visit the site can vote for 5 favorite songs from a list of 50 songs posted on the site.  The votes are tallied, and announced on the show.

Each week, an artist on the list will perform a song on the show.  Some of the artists you can vote for: John Mayer, Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, Katharine McPhee, Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry and Pink.

I believe Robin Thicke is slated for one of the upcoming shows. He recorded a performance the same night as Akon.

Also, while poking around the official American Idol website, I found this.  A partial list of Idol Alums who will participate in this summer’s brand-new Idol Camp has been announced.  Spending part of the summer in the beautiful Massachusetts Berkshires will be, Bucky Covington, Carmen Rasmusen, Vonzell Solomon, Kimberley Locke and Jon Peter Lewis.
