- Did she think she was going home? “I didn’t. I really thought I was going to be okay this week. I thought I did my best job on the song this week; I thought I hit all the notes. It’s the most vocally challenging song I did this year so far. When I was done, I thought Simon was going to feed off of Paula and say he enjoyed it…I was a little upset to go. I thought I had at least another week in me.”
- What it’s like in the Bottom 3, “It’s been tough being in the bottom three, but I got a little tougher each time and finally learned how to control the emotions coming from the whole situation. This last time, it was definitely nerve-wracking, because none of us knew what was going on, how they were separating the groups, and sending us to different sides of the stage. It was definitely a shock for me to go home. I wish I wouldn’t have left so soon — I wanted to make top five — but I am happy Brooke’s still in the competition because she’s one of my best friends.”
- How did her singout come about? “Yeah, it was kind of my last time on the stage. I just wanted to go over to Simon and let him know I wasn’t scared of him. I had enough confidence to go and sit right in front of him…When it was getting close to Ryan announcing the results, I said, ”Can we do what we want on stage? Because I’m going to sit on Simon’s lap and sing.” [Debbie, the stage manager] said, ‘You are?’ and I said, ‘Yes, I am.’”

I have to hand it to Chikezie, he clawed his way into the Top 12 and fought to stick around til the Top 10. But, he was living on borrowed time. The crazy upbeat deal wasn’t going keep him in the game week after week, and as we saw tonight, ballads are deadly to poor Chikezie. Ballads are boring, indeed.

Season 7 Top 10 is a total rock-fest, with Michael Johns and David Cook turning in energetic, passionate performances. Clearly the best of the night. Michael puts himself back in the game, at last, and David truly turns into the Dark Horse who could possibly sneak up past ‘lil David Archuleta to take it all.
The Idols sing songs from the year they were born. Y’all ready for another 80’s night? Eight of the remaining contestants were born in the 80’s (with Michael Johns and David Archuleta bookending the crew on the cusp, 1979 and 1990 respectively). The pool of songs looks similar to 80’s week from Top 20. At least it’s not the Beatles, again. Thank Jeebus.
Tonight’s pre-performance video packages feature the kids when they really were kids. Awww. So cute.

Amanda Overmyer–Eliminated tonight. Damn. I think she did herself no favors when she declared Tuesday night that “Ballads are boring” and seemed to be sneering at Simon’s advice. Appearing early in the show, with a middling performance didn’t help her either. I think Amanda was somebody you either loved or hated. Her tough biker-chick persona is not for everyone. But, that’s exactly why I liked her. The white chicks on Idol tend to be these pretty little pony princess types. Amanda is certainly not that. Although she’s not as versatile as some of her castmates–her vocal ability was limited to blues rock–I think she would have added something different to the tour.
I admired Amanda’s aloof, don’t-mess-with-me attitude, but I can see how that might not be the best strategy for encouraging viewers’ votes.

Seriously, the Beatles two weeks in a row? What’s the point? The kids did a really good job last week with the Lennon/McCartney songbook, why push it? And push it, indeed they did. I’m hearing the kids were working on another theme (birth year) when TPTB in their infinite wisdom, decided to change themes. The kids had to scramble to pick new songs. That bit of chaos shows in tonight’s performances.
It kind of sucks that the kids were forced on a mad dash Top 11 week. This week’s performances are important. The contestants who make the cut make the summer tour where they finally have the opportunity to make some real money. It’s not only the money, but the additional exposure they can add to their resume. The heat is definitely on.
Randy Jackson takes as many opportunities as he can to pimp his record with Paula Abdul, “Dance Like There’s no Tomorrow”. Paula expands her vocabulary! She says the kids who had “gumption” will continue to take risks. And, who pissed in Simon Cowell’s cornflakes? Just a question. You’d think he would have perked up after Kristy Lee Cook offered him a blow job. But, noooo. Seriously, There’s some very interesting back-talk to the judges this week.

The kids perform the Lennon/McCartney song book this week. Again. Too much of a good thing? Perhaps. Last week’s show exceeded expectations. The kids rose to the challenge, offering a mostly entertaining 2 hours of television. The songbook is vast–there should be no problem coming up with 12 more great songs. But…eh. The bloom is off the rose a bit, no?
An FYI. Starting with the Top 12, the iTunes downloads are studio recordings, rather than live performances. My favorites from last week: “Across the Universe” Micheal Johns - I was in the minority, I loved his performance. The studio recording is even better. “If I Fell” Jason Castro - I thought his performance was slight, but the recording mixes his vocals up front and center, highlighting his lovely phrasing. “Let it Be” Brooke White - Just as pretty and heartfelt as her performance. The show tonight opens with cross promotion: Horton’s little Whos sit in front of the television, anticipating the start of American Idol. Just like the rest of us.
You did it America. Over 29 million votes Tuesday night. And it’s finally happening. Season 7 is out pacing Season 6 in vote totals. Last season’s Top 12 garnered 28 million votes. I’m not surprised. I expect to see the same kind of turn-about in the ratings as the buzz for this season continues to grow.

Let me say, right off the bat, that I love the Beatles. I’ve been a fan since I was 5 years old. As far as I’m concerned, pop music begins and ends with Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr. As you might imagine, I anticipated this week’s Beatles theme with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. I love these songs, I love hearing them, but not so much when they’re butchered. And as Idol fans are aware, anything can happen on the big Idol stage.
Happily, the kids are alright. Beatles night is NOT a trainwreck as some have predicted. There are several fine performances and a few surprises.
Most wonderfully, it appears that we have a REAL race on our hands. Front-runners suddenly seem fallible, and contestants who’d been counted out are back in the race.
This is really good stuff.

Here’s your Top 12. Are these kids the best evah? Show mouthpieces keep saying it over and over again, as if saying it will make it true. I think we’re off to a good start, with break-out performances already from David Archuleta, David Cook and Jason Castro. However, it still remains to be seen if this crew will deliver once they hit the big stage this week.
Some interesting factoids:
Seven of the 8 teenagers who comprised the Top 24 were eliminated during the semi-finals. Two 25 year-olds, a 26, 28 and 29 year old round out the ages of the rest of the eliminates. Ten of the Top 12 contestants ages run between 20-25. The cast is bookended by a 17 and 29 year old. Roughly, the youngest and oldest contestants of the original Top 24 were eliminated during the semi-finals.
Past season have traditionally had a heavy representation of contestants from the Southeast. This year, the South is represented by 2 Floridians, and a contestant who claims part-time residency in Georgia. There are 6 West-coasters, including contestants from Arizona and Utah. Two contestants hail from the central South–Texas and Oklahoma. And, there is one Midwesterner, from Indiana.
