Fox Reality’s American Idol Extra debuted tonight on Fox Reality, and I’m watching it right now. The Extra cameras were filming David Hernandez as he said goodbye to the judges and castmates . Syesha Mercado was crying. All three judges hugged David, and Simon Cowell talked to him for a bit. David said that Simon thought maybe he was down because of last week’s media scandal (News of David’s history as a stripper in a gay nightclub was posted on nearly every media site).
David said he wasn’t down, but that the song choice, “I Saw Her Standing There” wasn’t his first. He wanted to sing “Let it Be”. Numbers were pulled out of a hat, and he lost. “The song I got stuck with,” he said, “Wasn’t one of my personal favorites, but I tried to make the song my own. Obviously it didn’t work out too well.”
David says he’s got some offers already. He’s upbeat and looks forward to the future.
Sanjaya Malaker is on the show, and he says he would have chosen “Michelle” if Season 6 had done a Beatles’ theme. He’s working on an album right now.
Melinda Doolittle was also interviewed, and she’s also working on a CD. “Slated to come out in June,” she says. She wrote a song with Jonny Lang. She says the album will be “a little rock grit with some funk and some soul.”
Simon Cowell thinks that David looked “Defeated…haunted.” Simon thinks the scandal got to him.
Gina Glocksen and Constantine Maroulis are co-hosts. Watching them read lame crap off of cue cards is pretty funny.
Amanda Overmyer’s song choice was also her second choice. But she says, “it ended up working out for me, and that it was the song out of all of them I should have picked anyways.”
Jason Castro related very much to the song he sang this week. He says that right now, he’s “On the verge” with someone…
David Hernandez wanted to sing “Yesterday” next week.

“Nashville is the new LA” is written on Melinda’s shirt. And when I met her at the after show (even though she was about to dash out, she spoke with me for a minute and allowed me to snap this picture) she said her next move was to get back there and take a looong nap.
Melinda’s “Natural Woman” was one of the highlights of the Idol concert. What makes Melinda amazing is that while she approaches her songs like a technician, she’s still able to bring warmth and emotion to her performances. It’s hard to imagine Melinda fitting into the Top 40 world of today (she would have had mega hits in the 80’s a la Anita Baker, no doubt), yet, there has to be a niche for Melinda somewhere. Whether it’s jazz, gospel or Broadway. Or maybe all three. She’s too fine a talent for the music industry to pass up.
Verizon Wireless Arena was nearly full last night as the Idols took the stage for the next-to-the-last time. There was lots of heartfelt thanks to the audience for giving them the opportunity to tour, and in response the audience was wildly enthusiastic. I think these last two show are going to be memorable for the Idols. Manchester, NH has always loved the Idols.
And get this–Tony Orlando was in the house! Yes, Tony Orlando, from Tony Orlando and Dawn. No I’m not kidding. He was there with a young girl who was probably a daughter or granddaughter. People were asking for his autograph during intermission. Too funny.
Yeah, yeah, I saw the Idols in Worcester last Wedndesday!
Well, my night seeing my favorite Chris R finally arrived last night and I must say my $220 ticket was worth it.. Like that commercial, idol tickets $220, parking $25, program $20, seeing Chris live while holding hands with my daughter and singing out loud to every song we knew..priceless.
